About the US Open

Post by sidekick »

I am currently not aware of anyone wanting to host this event, so i am considering spear heading it myself. I wanted to start this topic to allow others to help me figure out two things:

1) How many people would be interested in coming to Portland for the US Open this year?

2) Would it be better for the people to have it before or after worlds?

I want to start getting this going if it is actually going to happen, and i plan on talking with other organizers in this general area to see what they think... until then, please vote :)

euros are mid july, so it would be better to host it after worlds, allowing north american players to do an extended european trip visiting both, warsaw and aachen

Rene raises a good point. My counterpoint, would be that it would be good to have both Euros and USO before Worlds, so the people at Worlds could theoretically use the results from each for more accurate seeding. But that never happens, so I guess it kinda doesn't matter.

I plan on going to Worlds, and in terms of justifying vacation time to my boss, it'd help me if USO were over a month away from Worlds in either direction. Just so I can spread out my vacation time.

Stoked to hear people are considering running this. Portland would be great for me.

A few of my fellow Highschool buddies and I are thinking about attending. I want to go, I'm trying to persuade them to. We're amateurs, really, but we want to go to our first event and improve. :)

Hey Aaron. I could not encourage you more highly to attend. Footbag is fun, and it's great playing with your local friends. But there's something special about attending your first tournament, and just getting a sense of the vibe at a footbag tournament. It's really a one of a kind community. I've been playing 15 years, and I'm still close friends with some people I met at my first footbag tournament. You will also find that many dedicated players kind of took the plunge, took that next step in the development of their game, thanks to being inspired by their first tourney. I think you'll find the people at USO to be extremely friendly and helpful, since we all remember what it was like to be new at some point.

Well, that makes me want to go even more. Thank you for you insight, Ken. I hope to meet you and others in the future. I'm seeing which ones of my friends are interested in going. I'll check regularly here to see about the date so I can confirm it with them, they'll be saving up for a ticket. Thank you again. :D

Worlds is more unlikely this year, due to me graduating and getting a big boy job. So, if I don't go to worlds, I'm 100% making US Open, wherever it is. Seeing Nick Landes again will be like opening fresh peanut butter just after you toasted toast. I can't wait.

So dreamy.

I'd enjoy it, if it were a month away from worlds in either direction as well.

Mmm peanut butter.

toasted toast = double toasted bread! I know that's how you do it in Canada.

a few of us here in P-town are seeing what is available, and seeing if it's possible to host it this year. Thank you for your input everyone, if/when we have made a descision i will post here and on Facebook to let more people know. It's looking like later August is more likely, just becuase of worlds and because of June still being in the "rainy" season.

USO 2012- keep your fingers crossed for Joe getting the club registered before the summer at PSU so we can have a free day at a rec center. That would reduce prices and make it more likely that it will happen. More updates to come as our plans solidify. We meet every friday, so keep your eyes peeled modified go-ers

Looking forward to going to Portland again. I'll be there. Hope to see the Boise crew there -- they put on an excellent USO last year.

So is USO for sure happening in Portland then? I had heard talk of it happening in Seattle. Any progress on a date? So far my only tournament plans this summer is Vegas Jam and Worlds, but I would make every effort to make it to USO.

I just came across this:

http://www.footbag.org/events/show/1320803601

Why don't you try to piggy back? I guess there is no communication between the two groups. They already have the dates and the space you just have to run freestyle. jusayin

Yup, we're well aware of the net event. Sole Purpose has held freestyle USO in conjunction with them in the past. It's a great venue for net but not so much for freestyle. It has been discussed as a possibility but we're working on another venue that's much more desirable than either Willamette Park or Nautilus Center.

I am not central to the event planning right now, but it is almost certain to be in Portland this year. All your questions will be answered when there's an official announcement. That will be soon, I expect later this month sometime after Vegas Jam. It's gonna be awesome, stay tuned.
