How many hours do you play a week?

Post by Derek »

If it was possible, I'd play every moment of every day. But seeing as that isn't really physically possible, I've been wondering how much players actually play for. I try to average at least 2 hours of getting down a week(Drilling and all that business), and then another hour from just kicking in between classes at the campus.

How many hours do you spend(Average and competition, if you compete, weeks) playing some good ol' footbag a week?
And what skill level do you consider yourself?(I'd like to know if more advanced players play more or less than those of lower skill)

I do 3, 1 hour long solo drill sessions every week and 1, 3 hour session with the rest of RCS every Sunday. I try for 4, 1 hour solo sessions but usually only do 3. I also kick for about 10 min a day + stretching is a must so an hour a day for that as well. So I'd say in total per week, 6-7 hours shred.
I am low level guiltless and feel like this is the right amount of shred for me to progress quickly and not hurt myself.
I like to play.
I want to play good.

It depends a lot what time of year it is. During the winter I purposely take off a lot of time in an effort to let my body rest. In Spring I ramp up my training, in Fall I try and ramp it down. In late spring early summer, I play the most since I'm trying to get into competition form.

Another related question for you is how much time people spend crosstraining for footbag.

During my peak training season, I probably play on average an hour a day.

last time this year I was playing 4 days a week 2 hours a day , now with being super busy I unfortunately am not playing as much ....about 2 times a week for about 2-3 hours....but I still feel like I am just starting to figure this game out ..

As far as how much my body can take....this has changed......I used to be able to play as much as I want....but now ....I have to be really focused on what tricks i do so that I am able to play the next day.....If I use an hour for primarily torques or body moves ...i have to remember that my body may need at least one day to recover...... When I went to east coast footbag champinoship , It took me about two weeks to train to be in the shape to play 3 hours + for 3 days in a row........

That's where I wish to get to, Dan. Guiltess is 3 or 4 add strings? Still a bit new to the terminology of things, especially with it all changing. Do you take any break days?

I totally thought about asking that after I already posted this, Ken. How much time do you take off during the winter? I sadly do not spend much time crosstraining as I should.

Jazzkid, sounds like a year ago you were going beast mode. I've seen a couple of your videos on here. So if you are just now starting to figure it out, I cannot wait to be on that level. Cause I feel like I have NO clue what this game is, I just know I'm beyond addicted. What would those 2 weeks of training before the comp consist of?

^ :)

The two week prior to competition was very different than I had hope it would be.....I was coming off of a knee injury ...so my main goal was to be able to play 3 days in a row without needing a day off and being able to walk.....what I really wanted was to be fully functional and at my best but had to settle for able to play

I was off for about a month before those two week and it was my first comp to prepare for.

I played one day then wanted to see the next day if I could play again..... I couldnt until I was fully healed from the injury....but when I could played regurarly I set up my schedule where friday was my day off and that way I would be at my peak in the week sat and sun for the comp.. I worked my routine each session and also did ONLY runs.....to prepare for circle comp... thats about it

Thank you for all of your input man. Damn, sounds like that was a mission and a half. How did you do in the comp coming off an injury like that?

I play half an hour every day at work during lunch. It's not enough to improve. By the time I'm done warming up and stretching, I have only a short time to work on what I want.

On top of that, I try to play once a week with the rest of the club here, which is a more serious session that lasts a couple hours.

So that's about 4 to 5 hours a week. Can't do much with that except not get worse. I'd like to double that number coming into spring.

Chris
Do you sweat a lot when you get down at work? I did that at my last job(In jeans and some steel toed Timberlands), and would work up a nice moistness. Co-workers always had a laugh. Damn, 8-10 hours is intense. You don't think you can improve on 4-5 hours a week? How skilled are you?!?!

0. Injured.

But yah Derek, a new player will improve a LOT playing about 5 hours a week. But top level players (like Chris) will need to work much harder to have some progress.

With experience, i just figured out i should play when i feel like it. Making footbag like an homework is the worst thing you can do for your passion. So when there are some periods i don'T feel like playing, i don't. So next time i'll play, it will always be fun... That's the key in my opinion :).

Have fun!

Just realized who Chris Dean is, my bad man. Where do you work?! That's the first thing I wanted to ask after watching that lunch video you posted a while back.

Oh damn Mathieu, nothing that will prevent you from playing again right? How long have you been out of comission? Forced downtime is always a drag, hope you heal quickly! Very well put, I completely agree with you.

On a solid week I will kick for about 2 - 4 hours every day. Average that and it is around 20 hours a week. On a slow week it will be around 15 hours, a hardcore week will be around 30 hours.

I just realized how much I train, and still am a baby at this sport. It is addicting!

I don't think I'm top level, just somewhere in the middle, but thanks :) ... anyway my sessions at work don't really help much because they're so short individually. If I did 5 hours all in two sessions I'd get more out of it because it takes awhile to get into the zone. A lot of time is lost warming up for each short session.

And Derek, I'm in manufacturing. My employer provides a fitness room in the building where I work. It's pretty awesome to have.

before i had 2 injuries that put me out for 5+ months i used to play 3-4 hours a day. now I play between 2-5 times a week and cross train about half as much as i play. if you find the right balance and enjoy every session for what it is it's easy to play alot.

footbag is all about work so the more you play ultimately the better you'll be. Things like natural talent (which is real, you've got it if you dont think so :)) and body type come into play, but i'd like to thing that whatever i've achieved in footbag is a result of playing alot rather then bendy ass ankles.

When I was most into training I aimed for 10 hours a week, but was fine if I got a solid 8.

Holy shizah! You get down on an average of 20 hours a week?? Much props Mike. Your shred time is almost more than I work. I need to get on that level.

What do you think is the perfect amount of time for a great session, for yourself Chris? Or does it just matter on what exactly is hit throughout? That's so dope dude, looks like a fantastic shred room.

Kevin, are you aiming to bring that number back up, or are you just kind of going with it? Did you posess any natural talent coming into the sport, and did you previously have bendy ass ankles before you started shredding like mad?

Matt, so I take it you are in your off season? Were those hours shredding with a crew and/or by yourself?

I always try to aim for playing an hour for each day. I don't always get to that, but that's the vague figure in my mind, and of course sometimes I play longer. I also play during lunch breaks as well, just for a short session. I never really work on anything in particular in those sessions, just play to get the blood flowing.

Derek : My job allows a lot of break time. I almost only shred at work, unless I want to film. Today I already hit 4 hours and I have to call it quits if I want to hit it again tomorrow. Too bad all of these hours are alone :(

It's hard to say. By myself, an hour and a half would be great, unless I don't really care about being sore the next day then I'd do more. On a nice day when I have a lot of energy I could probably be most productive in a two hour sesh. In a circle of 3 or 4, it might last 2.5 to 3 hours if we're feeling good.

I'm currently in the same boat...

Hopefully my injury will heal within the next month. I used to play WAY too long every session. That's how I got injured in the first place (That, plus bad form).

I suggest you play a lot when you're on basic stuff, then as you start to get into bigger concepts like stepping, atomic, etc... you should tone it down just a bit and ALLOW YOUR BODY TIME TO HEAL (<--That's where I effed up)

Pay attention to your form and how your body feels... Good luck man...
