A few things...you don't need the player to play divx movies, just the codec...it's just that they force you to download the player when you download the codec. You can play a divx movie in windows media player as long as you have the codec installed. I'm pretty sure you're doing something slightly wrong to get file sizes like that. Mpgs are cool in my opinion for short movies (i.e. hackrifice's move demos). WMV just sucks balls...I'd much rather have a larger file size for the difference in quality. Quicktime can kick ass, but it's just really annoying due to file sizes and other shit. All in all I MUCH prefer divx to wmv, and mpg is perfect for short videos. It's cool though anyway...I'm pretty sure EVERYONE is a know-it-all asshole when online

mpegs rock. quicktime sucks. im not a big fan of divx. but i can view them now, so im not complaining. i dont like wmv/asf for the reason that you cant skip frames as easily as mpegs. however. theyre just so damn compressed. i dont have much webspace and the wmv format really helps me out there.

Footbag Video Compression For Dummies
To start this, I am not oneweak, I'm just a friend, so anything I say if you get mad don't get pissed at the real oneweak.
Ok, dizzy, you seem to sound like you know what you're talking about. But you don't. You're complaining about stupid shit like, "if you aren't careful what you're downloading, you might download the ad version". Then get glasses!! it's clearly labelled!!
If you're getting those file sizes then you don't know how to set up your divx codec before encoding it. DivX is the best encoding you can use on a video. No question about it. One question: were you encoding the audio the same exact way for both videos?
To anyone encoding footbag vids, here's what you do:
Use VirtualDub. Look for it online; it's free.
Download the DivX codec and install it, whichever version if you want. Put on your glasses if you need to select what download you want.
Capture your video in any format that you want, as long as it's not MPEG. It must be an avi file, whatever format you choose.
Open it in VirtualDub and from the video menu, select Compression.
Choose the DivX Pro 5.0.2 codec. (or whichever version you have)
There is a button on the right that says Configure; go to that.
You have some options you can do here. If you're lazy and don't really want to fine tune the video, under "Bitrate" change the variable bitrate mode to "1-pass quality-based" and use the slider to control how much quality you want to retain from the original capture file. Play around with that until you get the right filesize/quality ratio you want after you render the vid.
Now from the Audio menu select "Full Processing Mode".
Again from that menu, select Compression.
Choose the "MPEG Layer-3" codec, and select something like "24kBit/s, 22,050 Hz, Mono". That should be enough for the audio in a footbag vid. Select something better if you really want to; but it will increase the filesize by some.
From the File menu, select "Save As AVI". Depending on the speed of your computer and the length of the vid, it will take some time to render and compress the movie. Not extremely long though.

why would using divx to encode a feature length film be good and not encoding a 10-second clip not? It doesn't compress longer movies better than it compresses smaller videos...it's the same exact thing. good logic you've got there.

i think the same info could be given without being an ass. it's kinda like all this jargon you know about computers...just compress what you say to real information and leave out opinions. i don't care if you use MPEG or us an AVI or whatever the hell you want. just compress the facts into a paragraph strictly about what you want to say and leave out insults or sarcasm.

I figured when he told me he wanted to post some stuff he was gonna be an ass about some stuff...so I was like "dude don't be mean because these are all cool people and they're my connection to the footbag world so i need them"...hehe. So I guess everyone'd be best to disregard the insults/sarcasm comin from my buddy and just use the divx encoding guide that he typed up...because that was pretty well done and could be really helpful to anyone encoding divx movies. Hey...I just encoded the css3 video from freefootbag.org in divx. The original file was 55 megs, and the new one is only 27.7. I'm not trying to like show you up or anything dizzy, I just wanted to show you how much better divx can be. I put the video up in divx at www.mattguindon.com/css3divx.avi so you can see that the quality is pretty much the same as the original mpeg. Again, I know I probably look like I'm trying to be an ass or something and trying to show dizzy up, but I'm really really not trying to, I'm just trying to show dizzy and everyone else that divx is probably the best way to encode movies because of the combination of quality and file size. The other thing is that divx can be streamed as long as your streaming video server supports mpeg-4...just takes more work on your part to get it to be able to do so. I just want everyone to see that divx is a very good choice for videos, because I really support the standardization of divx, and I'd much rather see divx become a standard codec than see wmvs start becoming more prevalant. I don't want there to be an argument or anything, so buh bye.

The .asf(.wmv - same thing) is only 33.1 megs, but a 5.4 meg difference is a 5.4 meg difference.
If you could keep it hosted there, that would be even cooler as my server is going down for an unknown period of time.
Maybe I'll even try to setup one of them streaming server's you speak of when I put things back together.

Could a missing audio channel account for a lower file size?
Also, it appears as though unless you're running the latest version of Winblow's media player that you must use the provided player, as the vid freeze's on the first frame.

Oh yeah, the whoel streaming divx thing I found on the divx website...but they don't tell you how to do it, just that you should be able to do it. http://www.divx.com/support/faq.php is where I found this...but I'm sure if you posted to their forums or something asking how someone could help you out.
hmm...It's probably just the way I compressed the audio...for some reason my computer sucks and wouldn't let me compress it mp3 style so I must have fucked up on that. Either way, with sound it shouldn't be too much bigger. I'll have my homeboy encode it later tonight, and I'll switch them. I dunno about the playing them with windows media player problem though...works fine for me. Are you downloading it first and then trying to play it or is it just opening up windows media player when you go to the url? There was a problem kind of like that in the divx faq, mabye that's what's happening:
