Hey are you guys going to be shredding April 6 - 8? I know I already mentioned this, but I really want to meet up with you guys! I will be at the Penny Arcade East Expo. http://east.paxsite.com/ It is at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Are you guys close to that at all?
There will be HUGE crowds to play in front of, and a lot of people dressed up in costumes (great for filming). You could make an excuse that we are recreating the California Games hacky sack game if people accuse of us of treading on them.
As much as I love video games, I love footbag even more. I hate to think that I would be in Boston and not meet any footbaggers

Hey Mike, it looks like the convention center is located in South Boston which is good news because thats a fantastic place to kick. It's within in biking distance for Pete and me. Kevin usually drives into Boston from Beverly.
School has consumed my life recently but I can definitly make some time to kick that weekend. I look forward to meeting you.

Hm, Sunday might work for me. I think we are planning on coming home Sunday afternoon some time. My wife might just go home and I stay for a little longer. Saturday is for sure for me. I will check my schedule and get back to you about this today, or tomorrow.
I like jamming, but I don't know about the other things you mentioned

just over 3 years from my devastating knee injury (14 months without being able do anything beyond a toe stall without tweaking my knee back out, followed by a year of playing less than once a month, followed by about 6-8 months of playing once or twice a week), and apparently i actually may have made the right decision to not get surgery (it wasnt so much of a decision as a "id rather spend the small amount of money i have on stuff other than my health" thing). i did some very serious damage to at least one of my ligaments going too big and too hard on a double blender and for the next 2 years thought id never be able to do any kind of whirl/rev whirl dex, drifters, fairy, or double dexes with that leg again. ive reinjured it multiple times, aggravated it dozens of times, limped for days, kicked only on side side, and stopped just short of a complete retirement. in fact, doctors told me even if i DID get surgery on it, which they strongly recommended, it wouldnt be worth it if i didnt retire from the sport as well.
i was bummed. pissed. jealous of un-injured footbaggers, with their superman ligaments that they never have to think about, that doesnt tweak out if you take an awkward step sideways, while not even kicking (ive reinjured myself to the point of needing crutches while: 1. walking on flat, level ground 2. stretching 3. playing pool (!) 4. getting laid (which totally ruins it...) 5. playing frisbee 6. yawning probably), nevermind while theyre pushing themselves to the limits of what our human skeletal system is designed to withstand going for their fancy-pants double butterflies and whatnot, while i try to learn to kick relying almost entirely on my flip side (not the worst thing in the world i guess) and wonder if im gonna wake up some day and realize somewhere along the way my strong side whirl somehow became a big highlight.
no one understands what its like to show up to a jam/tourney injured until it happens to you. i blew my knee out 3 days after buying flight tickets to chicago for my first and so-far only NYJ. baggers on modified that youve talked to for months and even years online are generally really cool, nice people, but most of them are only briefly polite to you when they find out youre injured so bad you can barely walk, so you pretty much dont even count as playing the same sport. theyll talk to you for a few minutes before giving you a subtle look that says "ok, so why are you here?" and going to kick or talk to someone they have more in common with....someone that actually plays. sucked a big one. i did and do appreciate pretty much everyone i met, especially the ones i knew previously, because they were probably nicer to me about it than i would have been to most people, i really do; it just fucken sucked.
it can be a brutal sport, there isnt much you can do when bad knees run in your family. of course anything in excess can, and will most likely, do damage to your body. its tough to really learn much from my story. i didnt do everything right, i had bad form early on, played too much, tried the same move too many times in a row, didnt really play it like it was a real sport (no training, no focus on form or diet, etc), made a lot of bad decisions (possibly not getting surgery was one of them...), etc and suffered an injury i gurantee i would have even if i had done everything right. and there are definitely baggers out there that dont think about any of that and have never gotten injured....theres too many variables to say do these 5 things and youll never get injured; so why preach?
the only advice i can give about injuries in footbag doesnt even relate directly to the injury itself. footbag isnt like most other sports....its not directly competitive, the only time you know for sure if you won or lost is at a jam, yet every drop is a small loss in of itself and everytime you hit something you never have, even if everyone else has, can be a huge victory. so my advice is dont take anything for granted. remember the feeling of hitting mirage for the first time ever, because someday youll probably be pissed that you cant hit it after a dex and a duck on both sides and youll have lost something in the worth of just keeping it off the ground and doing stuff almost no one else in the world can do. you set the worth of your own game and the enjoyement you get out of it. dont focus on hitting this milestone move, or checking that set of the list, marinate in your game, be creative, dont take a single stall or dex for granted. thanks to the older players that tried to tell me this early on, all footbaggers with the right attitude about the sport at any level, the many baggers who's styles ive tried to emulate over the years (lon, nasty nate, etc), the new baggers coming in keeping the sport alive even if they arent cool yet (ha) and most of all the great crew of guys ive kicked with, hung out with, laughed with, etc. jason buzby, who no ones ever heard of, jason varvaro, frandias, kevin andrews, chris williams (haha), doug the stank tank (i remember first meeting him at northeastern....he was like 17, tiltless, and untainted; all of which is no longer true) and of course hogan, who still pushes me more to play than anyone else in the world, but definitely knows how to have some laughs at the same time.
that being said:
spinning diving legover>smog>smoke>string
eggsauce (only took 7 years...wicked long string tho)
spin clipx3>gyro clipx3>rpt (again)
torque>blaze>string
whirling infin>fog>string first try
and
whirl and rev whirl BSOS (havent done that post-injury)
swirl and rev swirl BSOS (havent done that post-injury)
blurry drifter BSOS (havent done that post-injury)
blender OS, dyno and pdx DLO both BSOS, all in OS

thanks guys, that means even more coming from yous.
ive never really understood how anyone could quit once you get the feeling of defying gravity to keep it up, whipping your legs around it in contorting poses, the variety of the moves, and showing people you can be good at a sport most people have never heard of. so i was never as close to quitting as i implied; even when i wasnt sure if i could ever play again, i knew deep down that i wanted to. i knew given the chance to play again i would, even to the point of risking whatever ligaments i have left at this point. part of it is the time and effort i had already put in, playing nearly everyday for the first couple years prior to injury, but mostly it was that combination of exhileration i could never willingly let go. i know im talking to the right guys to relate to on that one.
kevin: what neighborhood? i live in dorchester. definitely hit me up, i heal quickly. im almost definitely playing today after work.
nuclear opp foe-string
smog-tapping drifter
both gyro dlos, pdx dlos, 1 fog, 1 smog, all in OS
backside porque (one of my favorite all time move names now that i think about it)
PS Torque
(took too many tries though)
