Proper drilling.

Post by Derek »

How exactly should drilling be done, or does it really matter? Just as long as you are practicing, right? I drill for about 45-60 minutes, but the timing I do for each particular drill is usually a song. I warm up with kicking for 10-15 minutes, then after each song transition(though I will go two songs for some drills), I drill a new move. Drilling a total of 15 moves or so(basics are the focus, and the deeper I can go, the more I dip into the 3 add moves I know), and always working both sides. Is this fine, or do I need to spend some more time for each move or certain ones? I am beginning to really focus on my clippers so I will be cutting out time for the more advanced stuff for me.

On another note almost hit my first Guiltless string tonight, one away!

Looks good, but you should really be doing stuff like repeat drills.

i.e. Mirage> Legover rpt / Clipper> ss Legover> op Clipper rpt (Get as many repeats as you can, don't just stop at 1 and think you're good. The more repeats of a drill you can get, the more your muscles are learning.

Also b2b stuff like: Ducking Clipper b2b, Drifter b2b, Gyro Clipper b2b, etc...

Again, go for as many contacts as you can, don't just stop at Drifter> Drifter... Shoot for as many as you can get. You'll know you got pretty damn good at them once you can hit 50, know what I'm sayin?

It might take a little while, but set your goals high, then work up to them through your career in footbag. Good luck dude.

(PS. Start a footblog, so we can follow your progress :)

I wish I could do some of those drills! But I will start to set up some more repeating and back-to-back strings. I definitely get that, my main objective is to always get as many contacts as possible. I probably should get on top of that, thanks man!

My assignment to you would be to watch a lot of vasek footage and the david clavens clipper tutorial. You are well on your way to improvement, just have to work those clippers into a comfy zone. your toe game was looking great so keep that up :)

So I dedicated yesterday to just working on my clippers(Tired of that being the one move I can't do). I watched that Clavens Clipper tutorial till I had it memorized and watched Vasek footage focusing on his clipper form. After about 2 hours of framing myself and judging the crankage, I believe to have found my sweet spot! Or at least I am hitting it more consistently and the bag isn't chillin' on my ankle, it's actually on the inside. I can only hit it with a sand bag as of now, but I'm gonna practice the fuck out of it. Yeah man, can't wait till next time!

A few key parameters on drilling:

1) Good posture always (tight abs, back straight, neck on top of shoulders)
2) Work out drills that incorporate both left and right sides evenly, or slightly favoring the flipside
3) Focus on keeping a consistent rhythm and focus on drawing deep breaths in through the nose (never hold the breath)
4) Discover and practice the technique that requires the least amount of effort and puts the least strain on the body

The most important thing to remember is the mantra QUALITY, not QUANTITY.

Good luck. Have fun :)

Jorden: I have been working on my posture for sure. All is dandy when keeping my abs tight, just can't help but turtle neck it at times. Any key pointers on how to deal with that, or is it something I just have to force myself into habit? Flipside will be my top priority after I get a bit more cozy with these Clippers. By technique are you referring to the execution of a move or just the move itself? Thanks a lot man! Will do.

Bending forward at the waist while keeping the chest high and looking down with the chin will prevent the need to stick the neck out.

How can you have a move without it being executed? I don't understand.
Please don't answer that question.

Duuude, the bending forward helped quite a bit Jorden. Thanks! My bad, re-reading it confuses myself. Where can I find your old Extreme Moves video?! That was THE video that got me into freestyle back then, but I haven't seen it since then.
