OMG nipple chafe!
It's been cold lately, but today was sunny after a week of early spring weather (as opposed to the few weeks of summer weather we had pre-spring). I've had this before, but not often. I don't have sausage nips or anything. But it hurts! I know runners have this problem a lot. Anyway...

Ken had also noted 'baroque' which is another that we spell wrong (barroque), and which I wouldn't even question, even though I have a degree in art...

March 30, 2012
Duration: 1-1.5 hours
Footbag: Johnny warmup; Pengpeng shred
I finally hacked again, with school work winding down before finals. It felt good, although it would have been MUCH nicer if it wasn't 3 degrees out... Justin Dale's fearless has inspired me. It's TOUGH to do PWF fearless. I have a few repeat combos I plan to work on that I will eventually be able to combo and hit 10 fearless. I should be able to do it if I can minimize back, knee, and shin pain...
Anyway, some highlights:
-spinning ducking butterfly > reverse whirlygig [repeat] (a tie for my fearless record, which seems kind of sad, especially considering how easy this combo was)
-blurriest > mobius both sides
-little apple > pixie whip [repeat]
-little apple > ducking clipper [repeat x2]
-spinning clipper > gyro clipper [repeat] > spinning clipper x2 > gyro clipper [repeat] > spinning clipper x3 > gyro clipper [repeat] > spinning clipper x4 > gyro clipper [repeat] > spinning clipper x....4 (pretty good for a first try and having no room to spin indoors all winter. I'm not sure what my record is for this drill thing, but it feels fun!)
-spinning clipper > stepping whip > gyro clipper > stepping whip [repeat]
I feel like I'm missing a lot.
I wore my knees braces today, which was probably good. It's been so long, though, and it really hindered my dexes, precision, and speed. Blurriests were a cakewalk last session, but that extra thickness of the braces made them significantly more difficult. I kept footing blurrier > blurry whip [repeat], and I should have been able to do the other fearless combo I was trying, spinning ducking osis > blurriest > blurriest > spinning ducking osis. Maybe I'll try that one without braces next time. Blurriests without knee braces are eaassy. It was also cold, so my muscles were really stiff. Especially since I play, like, once every few weeks...
I've also been keeping an eye out for pretty places to film on U of T campus for the video I'll make when school's done (and the weather's nicer). There are some gorgeous buildings and places on campus that have been in a lot of movies and stuff. It should be good. I wish I had a nicer camcorder, though. My girlfriend actually works for a film company, and the owner said she could borrow equipment whenever she wants, but she doesn't feel comfortable about it :/

Anyway, yeah.
Has anybody seen that BBCSherlock TV show? Holy! It's so good. My sister-in-law told me about it. It's just brilliant. I was hooked within 10 minutes of the first episode. It's kind of similar to the movies, actually, which are also spectacular (though I've yet to see the second one still!!)

Here's a goody I've watched a few times over lately. It's difficult to find good, peak-of-his-game Vasek footage, I feel. Well, on that note, I recently dug out my old hack DVDs and watched Feet on Fire (Vasek in Africa). If you've never seen this... Then, you're really missing out. Montage > blurry flurry, flurricanes and gyro barroques BSOS all over.
Okay, so this is the Vasek video I've been watching lately:
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nv3v4F98 ... e=youtu.be[/youtube]

And this is a trailer(?) for the Feet on Fire DVD:

Whew.
Heavy session with Adam.
April 4, 2012
Duration:
2 hours
Footbag: Brian Bear? (one of Adam's)
Accompanied with my first bike ride of the season, which was nice. On the way back home, however, my calf was cramping like crazy. I also saw a car wreck after the fact, Grand Theft Auto style -- upside down, smushed into the side of a school. Lots of police cars blocking the street and people staring. It was really windy, so that really hampered our shred, but it was fun and productive none-the-less. I'm suuuppper dehydrated. My skin is sharp from all the salt caked on my face and arms (the wind probably didn't help in that respect).
Highlights:
-whirr a few times (seemed not too tough. super close to flip--the set is perfect, but the downtime whirl elludes me after playing without them for...8 years)
-flip blurry whipping swirl (first time, and Adam happened to film it--only thing we recorded all session--I hope I get to see that)
-bedwetter BSOS and dropped BSOSing fog (noteable, 'cause it was a first attempt and I hadn't done a bedwetter in.. probably a couple years)
-blur > tapping whip [repeat]
-footed the last mobius BSOSing vortex > mobius
-BSOSed double spinning clipper? (they seemed surprisingly on, but the wind really threw me off)
-some pretty solid strings
-ended on a pretty solid 38-contact.
-and then a 64-contact warm-down run

I can't remember too many of Adam's highlights. He hit a stepping whirling swirl first try really butter-like. It was fun. I sucked a lot, dropping almost everything 'cause of the wind (and also not 'cause of the wind...), but it was fun to feed off of his trick selection and combos.
Here's a goody. Lon madness from Worlds 2010. I had the pleasure to watch this in person:

With school winding down I felt an urge to upload a handful of videos to my Fourkast archives. It's a Finnish special, starring Lauri Airinen (6 videos), Juho Marjo (3 videos), and one of my favourites, Riku Ahola (with some Samu thrown in too) (6 videos): http://www.fourkast.com/media/videos/archive
The current deal with these is that I'm archiving videos pre-2008 for the time being. This actually takes me a LOT of time because I have to watch each one and write down each player, each significant trick, etc, sometimes do some research to find the city where the shred takes place. Also, Fourkast doesn't support batch uploading, which means I have to wait for them to upload individually (although Sean may have fixed this for me for bigger future projects). So uploading 15 videos just now took over 2 hours... Good thing I love cataloguing things...

A couple tricks stood out for me while re-watching these: Samu's Stepping Double Switchover and Riku's Tapping Barrage -- two tricks that I don't think I've seen before. Kiwi Swirl was a good one too, but that was big enough that I'd remembered it. The one Airinen garage shred, too, reminded me of my brother and I who both used to shred together in red Lavers. Good times, brother shred. Once I'm done with exams I'll get back to work on getting those full old school VHS tapes digitized and archived.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the feedback. I can try to accommodate any requests too, although I don't think I'll do any more uploads until at least a couple weeks from now when I'm done with finals. I have all of the significant stuff from ~2000-2007 nicely organized by player and such waiting to be uploaded. Then I'll move on to newer stuff, and I'll probably work on the full old school VHS tapes before then too. That'll be fun.

Oh, another fun thing is that since I tag players and tricks in every video, and I've uploaded a LOT of videos, if you like a particular player, or a particular trick, you can click on that tag and see a list of other videos I've uploaded with the same trick or player (or some less specific tags like "fearless"). So, for instance, if Ken was looking for all triple spinning videos, this would be a good way to search (although I don't think any significant triple spinning tricks were in videos before 2007... but as an example...)

Another intense session with Adam, which might be the last time I play with someone else until potentially with Johnny and Zach when I move to London. I still plan to film a video on campus after exams, though. He broke out the camera and he instantly hit a ton of sick combos. I was sucky pretty much all session. I got a few okay things on camera, but it was also the first session with a new pair of Climas that I modded last night.
Highlights:
-gyro whip > diving whip > gyro whip > diving wh..
-haze and fog both BSOS
-blurriest > blurriest > blurry whip > blurry whip > reverse tomahawk > spinning whip
-clean fusion both sides
-clean flurries both sides (almost BSOS again)
-reverse maelstrom and montage both sides
-spinning clipper > gyro clipper [repeat] > spinning clipper x2 > gyro clipper [repeat] > spinning clipper x3 > gyro clipper [repeat] > spinning clipper x4 > gyro clipper [repeat] > spinning clipper x5 > gyro clipper [repeat] > spinning clipper x6 > gyro clipper [repeat] > spinning clipper.. (first try, and a new record. How many contacts?... 54 spins)
-ended on a genuine 42-contact run. Or was it more? Between 40 and 60, anyway.

It was a pretty frustrating session, actually. One of those ones where I tried too hard to do unfamiliar stuff and thus often couldn't get past 3-contact combos... Still fun, a good work out, nice to session with Adam, and got a few things on video (with which Adam may put something together some time?) Adam was bang-on. I look forward to the video he'll make from all the session footage he's accumulating. Oh yeah, so some of his highlights were things like: symp flurry, ripped warrior > stepping whirl > ripped warrior > steppin.., haze > smoke > haze > smo..., spinning whirl > blaze, some top notch combos and lots of dense 20-ish-contact runs. I was jealous.

I guess this is today's video. Aleksi is my favourite player. I watch this video on an almost daily basis:
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCxzCuph ... e=youtu.be[/youtube]
For much more Aleksi, I went on an upload binge a while back. 20 older Aleksi videos here: http://www.fourkast.com/category/kicker ... er=Created Some of my favourites are the older ones from the New Years Jam in the all red/orange with all the double downs. He was in Bringing Out The Shred, and I always felt a little weird since his shred was way better than anything else in that film, but he was just a kind of background player... Felix is good and all, but... Do you guys know BOTS, or am I too old? Maybe that's when Aleksi became my favourite player. Around then. This is also one of my favourite videos of all time. I was super productive with studying the past two days and don't feel like working now, so I went on another Fourkast upload binge. A kind of random foray this time, the highlight of which easily being Mathieu Blau. I remembered him being nuts, but not this nuts!! I think he was something like 12 or 14 in this video. You can see all the tricks I tagged.. almost everything both sides. I flipped out so many times during this one. A list of videos:
-Matheau Blau
-Ashley Danowski
-Montreal Represent
-Montreal: NDA Centre
-Will Digges hits frontside nebula
-Special Tricks (some early Sergey Kozlov+Yoga)
-SJFF5 (Byrin, Evan, etc)
-Spokane Meets Seattle (some Justin Dale+Ricky Moran)
http://www.fourkast.com/media/videos/archive

A super happy note.
I just got a cheque for opting out of my university health and dental plan (I have better coverage with my girlfriend's disability income support). I assumed it was just deducted from my tuition before, but this is a great surprise, and with this money I'm going to buy the GoPro HD Hero 2! Like now, or tomorrow. I'm super happy about this because now I can make that video on campus a lot nicer. 120 FPS! I can also take some nice videos of my bike route into downtown, which is pretty scenic. ALSO, I'd just ordered a 32-gig SDHC card yesterday in lieu of a new camera to use in my girlfriend's SLR for footbag videos. And it turns out that's the max size of SD card the HD Hero 2 can take anyway. It was on sale for half price -- $30. Pretty good. So yeah. Pretty stoked for that. Here's an advertisement of it filmed completely with the camera, to a song by the same artist I used in an Andrew Grant video from a while back: [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUEZCxBcM78[/youtube]

EDIT:
I went and bought my HD Hero 2 and made a test video. It's a really bad test video, but it was for me to gauge a few things: 1) how far away from me I have to set it, 2) how it operates in dark settings, 3)how the 120 FPS setting works. I'm super impressed. It makes that room look lighter than it might actually be (our lights actually just died in that room...) I had the most trouble with editing, and I can understand Ken's frustrations now. I've never edited MP4s. I've never edited HD. And I've never edited high speed (anything beyond 30 FPS). A quick Google search said that I might not be able to play back in real time? But I'm not sure how much sense that makes. I also couldn't figure out how to export at more than 60 FPS... And the quality of this clip is really bad. I think it's only, like, 3 megs. Maybe I'll re-export it, actually, and see what I get. But quality wasn't one of the things I was testing yet. Not until I try to edit HD clips... I sent Jay a message asking how to do this, so hopefully he has some wisdom to impart, based on the success of his high speed videos. Here's my test:
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6g0gZekTaJQ[/youtube]

EDIT 2:
Another test video. Filmed at 720dpi, 60fps. Still trying to figure out better export options. Having trouble with DivX and anything other than WMV or uncompressed AVI...
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WWcOpBv ... e=youtu.be[/youtube]

EDIT 3:
Well I figured out how to increase the quality decently for local playback, but it's still not registering as HD on YouTube... Any suggestions?

Productive solo session just now!

April 11, 2012
Duration:
2 hours
Footbag: Pengpeng
My first daylight trial with the HD Hero 2. I hit a lot of stuff about which I'm really happy. I mixed up the angles and stuff. I bought a teeny tripod which lets me mount it pretty much anywhere really easily, and obviously the tripod mount itself (which doesn't come stock with the HD Hero). (I'm actually disappointed that it didn't come with the bike mount. But rather than buy it for $20, or whatever, I might just rig something myself...) I spent the last 30 minutes or so trying to get a scorpion's tail drill. My scorpion's tails are really weak, but they are much better now... Hahaha. Buuut, on one side I kick my clipper thigh really hard. And now, after the session, I have a hard lump that's probably gonna bruise up like crazy in a few hours... Ouch. Oh, yeah, so that combo was scorpion's tail > barfly [repeat]. The barflies are the really awkward part. After trying this forever, I decided to try ps whips instead, and, like, first try got scorpion's tail > ps whip BSOS.. maybe with something else in there. I don't remember. It'll prolly be a way easier repeat. Not as cool though :?
Highlights:
-blurriest > spinning whip [repeat]
-wetdream and haze both BSOS (great thing about this was that I wanted to try this, but then thought it was too hard, and was just going to open a run with one wetdream... Nice surprise!)
-fog > reverse reactor > blurry whip both sides (tried repeating. Could probably do it not too hard with ripwalks first)
-fusion and blurriest both BSOS (first fusion BSOS ever?)
-little apple > diving symp mirage > paradon BSOS

Oh, I also did some headcam stuff:
-reverse whirl war 2
-rubberman
-spinning clipper > gyro clipper [repeat] (wanted to do spinning whips, but the camera was coming off just from spinning clippers...)

I'm super close to fog > dimwalk > haze > dimwalk [repeat]. I kept dropping on the easiest link in the whole thing. I should have it soon. I didn't do too many actual runs, 'cause it's hard to make them awesome when I'm playing alone, but if I got a solid seal out of a combo a few decent runs came out of them. Anyway, I'll make a video tonight (foregoing more studying.. >___<) It's taking 30 minutes to copy the files. Oh, but my 32-gig SDHC card came today. Hence I was able to film so long. NICE! Also, Jay gave me tips for exporting, so I think I'm good on that front. It may take some experimentation, but I've got the basics down. So hopefully these test videos and the bigger one I'll do tonight will allow my U of T video to be pretty good quality and whatnot.

Oh, yeah, also, super important point: Apparently Premiere CS4 sucks with high speed and HD, so I got CS5 last night, and I think that made a big difference. Apparently CS5 and up is needed to do this. It also renders the clips so I can actually watch them while editing!

EDIT: Here's the video:

Haha. I had to show that to my girlfriend. I guess we make tea and oatmeal late at night or something?
Since I'm apparently not studying today either, I decided to whip up the last of my crappy point-n-shoot still camera footage. It's, like, webcam quality... What a contrast! I was clearly working on a lot of the same things. Also, after watching my HD video a few times, I'm appalled at how often I bail to osis > butterfly on one side in, like, every run. I'm going to have to work on removing that tendency...
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_Tj3-2zCQE[/youtube]

Notice the weird stall that just happens on the last trick... Doing that same combo, I'd also got it stuck in the heel of that same opposite foot shoe. It felt like a Jorden moment, except unintentional.

Thanks Ken :)

Finals week is killing me right now. I did well on my first two, but last night's exam was terrible, and the worst part is that it was the course in which I was doing the best. If I had done well on the final, it could have meant an A+ in the course. As it is, I'll be lucky to push an A-. I just couldn't fit any more information in my head with no sleep, and it made me physically sick, which also didn't help. Gearing up for my last one in the morning... should be.. okay. But I should be studying right now. I just wanted to share a video. It's the one that inspired me to do my Europe video. I think there was a lapse of a year that I was dying to make mine before I was able to. Here's Dylan Fry in India:
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G47Ah3rP ... e=youtu.be[/youtube]

I'm still stoked on the new video I'm planning, and can't wait to make it. I have a list of things to do for it and I keeping adding to it when I lay in bed unable to sleep. Should be good. Still not too sure on a song though. I kind of liked the meaningfulness of the music I chose for the Europe video, so thinking more along that line... In fact there's a song I used in a previous Toronto video that I'm tempted to reuse:
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xptsScA9Un4[/youtube]

I actually remember just after filming this video, sitting in my place with Mike, saying, I know exactly which song I'm going to use, and searching for it on YouTube. I remember this had a great music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqxaAfaCln8

Thanks for watching :)

From my challenges thread:
I got a handful of the easier challenges just now, but I started too late and it got dark really fast, plus it was really cold today. I got:

-gyro whipx2 (I thought 2 was a bit lame, so I did 4)
-far whip > gyro whip > far whip [repeat]
-stepping same knee bump > far whip [repeat]
-Ducking-mirage-ducking-clipper-ducking ss leg-diving clipper-ducking far leg-ducking butter-ducking paradox mirage rpt
-10 unique spins (well.. kind of weird. I did gyro butterfly > spinning butterfly [repeat] > gyro clipper > spinning clipper [repeat] > spinning ducking clipper > gyro diving clipper, but I didn't like it because I dropped that last drill, do I did it again with the spinning osii drill after the clippers, but accidentally threw in an extra gyro clipper somewhere, so it doesn't really count, but I'm gonna use that clip in the video instead... I was also thinking of doing something less drilly, but..didn't)

Actually, I might wait until I can try some more before I put together a video. I only missed the last dex on the osis > whale tail > eggbeater [repeat] one, got up to the torques on the really long downtime and ducking one... footed spinning ducking clipper > double spinning clipper both sides

Had a fun session with Adam, Dante, and Justin Hall from Oshawa tonight. Dante is a machine. Really dense runs, big tricks, and it all looks super smooth. Adam was spot-on, and almost every run was like his video -- really dense and tough stuff.

I had what was probably the worst session since I started playing again. No single run 20 contacts or longer. Most were under 10, or even 5 contacts. Super frustrating. But I don't think it was abnormal, either. I don't think I've got my runs back yet after my most recent absence from the game. This session really enlightened me to that. It was a struggle to do almost anything, actually, which maybe bursts my bubble for my epic Toronto video. I guess we'll see.

Adam's definitely surpassed me. And I'm definitely beyond thinking "How good would I have been if I'd never been injured, never mind so frequently." I am happy that I'm still able to play at all. I guess I'm curious about how much I'm able to improve and how much of a factor is my body health.

I'll try to recall some of my highlights, but there really weren't many:
-a run with spinning whip > ps whip [repeat] mid string (I don't remember with what I opened it, but it was also neat?)
-blurry drifter > ripwalk > blurry drifter > blurry.. (first or second try? Maybe I can do a bit more of those, though I'll be careful of my hip...)
-smog > diving symp mirage [repeat]

Yeah... that was pretty much it.
A fun night though. Beers, food, and talk after, which doesn't happen enough. Oh yeah, and I picked up the bike mount for my HD Hero 2 beforehand. I biked 21 km yesterday to test out my self-rigged mount, but it was way too shaky :( I hope to use some footage for my hack video too, so... this will be fun. There were some REALLY nice shots, minus the shakiness. Adam had a couple really sick things: fog > porque [repeat] off his foot, also blurry torque x2 off his foot -- both were first try. Sick.

my challenges thread wrote:I got some challenges today:
-mobydick
-wrecking pickup (almost both sides)
-(same) osis > whaletail > eggbeater [repeat]
-spinning ducking clipper > double spinning clipper [both sides]
-mobius > spinning ducking clipper

I was really close to the gyro dlo > legbeater > gyro clipper [repeat] one, kept dropping the last ducking clipper in that long downtime one (ARRGH!!), tried fairy gyro mirage a few times.. oh, almost did the whipping rake > spinning clipper [repeat] one, but forgot to try again. Also, got dark again. Yeah, I dunno.

Up to 66% completion!
I was really discouraged with that last session with Dante and Co., so I wanted to just do runs today and see... well, if I can. I think I passed the test. I got my girlfriend to film about 10 minutes to test out the cameras I'll use for my Toronto video, and got some fun stuff. I started out wanting to do mostly runs, but ended up trying too hard for some harder tricks... I kinda did both, though, which is happy. I'm gonna go whip (pun?) something together now with those test runs and my challenges from today and that last time and see what I get :)

Oh yeah, also, thanks Asmus! I don't know why I wrote Mathieu here. I clearly know his name is Mathias, as I wrote it in the video title on Fourkast... And, yeah, I saw some video of him from, like, a year or two ago, on YouTube? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHM9147nAiU) But it looks like he really took a long hiatus or something. Wasn't there another young, awesome Danish kid playing around the same time? Also, thanks for the compliment :)

Also, the wrecking pickup was, like, second try ever... Haha. I could do the other side if I tried more, but it felt a lot less natural on that side. Kept spinning into the bag.. which is actually strange, since for double spinning clipper my sides are switched... I always spin into the bag on the side that I hit the wrecking pickup... Weird.

EDIT: Well, my computer is being stupee, so I'm having trouble editing the challenges video, but I made a test video for my Toronto video, and learned a bunch of stuff: the quality of the other camera I was planning to use (so that not everything is extreme wideangle) is not so great. It's supposedly 720p, but only, like, 24FPS, I guess, and I think the auto focus is kinda crap, but my girlfriend didn't want to use manual, and it's probably hard to manual focus on continuous action shots anyway. I to be able to manual focus with a nice depth of field, like for the last shots, but maybe that's all I'll use it for. Also, it's a bit shaky handheld -- I might end up just using my tripod for almost everything. I'm glad I did the test instead of going straight into it.

So, not counting a few things, like smog > pixie whip [both sides] and the spikehammer thing, I did 8 runs: 14, 14, 11, 12, 19, 7, 12, 9, that average 12.25 contacts per, so that's not too bad. This was from, like, 15 minutes or so. Here's the video:
