for the last four days I have been playing music super late.......I just woke up with about 3 hours of sleep and I have the last super full day of the weekend.... first I go to my jazz brunch gig , but I have to leave early to make another gig at a fair with the cover band, then I have to leave early to go to my kids (Maddie and Marcus) music performance for there school..... Then Im gonna pass out......

My leg feels slight better today, but I may even take tomorow off so that this issue wont stay around when I start playing again....

I even keep dreaming about temple shred.......I want to go to open so bad.... I have always wanted to be on one of those squares with Nick, Scott, Jim, CHris, ect..... I remember when Rob Creel was at a comp and called me...........I had just hit blurry torque and he put Nick Landes on the phone .....cool moment ....at that time I had no idea how super sick Nick actually was...

I keep remeinicing about east coast comp and how cool everyone was......I reallized right away that the comeptition part of the "comp" was just a small part of why were there .....and some didnt even do the small part......

it was about being around the footbag family....its about meeting someone for the first time and already knowing them as friends.... its about standing next to someone better than you and feeding off of them...its about the 10 new tricks you'll learn because you just never would have thought to do that if another player didnt just bsuace that shit right in front of you.... its about sweating you ass off and drinking lots of fluids....its about not having to explain what footbag is to everyone around you, about pushing yourself to the limit, about waking up with super sore legs and knowing that if you stretch them out and warm up for 45 min that you can get them to play again, its about hitting cool tricks and not falling into the water, its about that feeling right before you start your routine, its about sticks on the ground and shouting out to ryan thomas, its about wishing that you could be around these people all the time, its about attempting that first swirling mobius of the the day, its about shit loads of footbag shoes everywhere, its about the feeling of appreciation, love, admiration, and excitement all around.....its about the after comp beer, the night before the comp, the time put in, the injuries rehabilitated, the smell of balls being covered up by axe body spray, the colored hair, the footbag necklaces , the trick theory , the execution, the links you never thought youd see in person, the improvements made, the first trick of the run, the flow of the run , the mobius>p torque that comes after 40 contacts because your about to run out of gas but you still go big...the .........

oh shit.....gig time..... 8)

word Mark.

good stuff lately and good skyping with you. you should check your webcams settings though cause you were super laggy at times so while your highlights were awesome i couldn't tell what some of them were :/

also i agree with you about comps only being a small part of jams. i usually remember the inside jokes/good times more then what i hit at a jam.

Right now I'm sitting next to the hit tub at the gym ... I stretched , weightlifted , did a couple of super low impact basic stalls and kicks and put my calf in the hot tub ....I think it was mainly a muscle issue .....it's getting better though ....I could force a session today but I will patiently wait a day or two more so that I am not a hesitant player when I play ...

Its weird ....I'm sitting here wondering all kinds of things .... As I look around , I know for certain that no one in this building , or no one is this state for that matter could out shred me even if I have a slightly injured calf .... This is lonely ....I'm like the vasek of the building ....( now I know that these people are old and can't even get in the pool all that easily , but damn I wish someone could come along and do it )

If that happened at least I would have a shred partner to motivate me ...
I've posted highlights, filmed , and called Richard Abshire numerous times , along with recently talkin to nick, Kevin , John and my self....
I love this game and playing but it is somehow cooler when you hit swirling spinning butterfy > p torque to start a run and you don't have to call anyone because they are already there and yelled out loud when it was hit ....

I have decided something that I have been considering for a while ....as soon as i have three more sessions ...I will start working a routine ....then I will go downtown and play on the street for tips and to build my stamina ....

I recently have met a couple people that seemed to show interest in footbag but they so far have proven to not be as Intersted as I was .... Not even

I am in the second week now of working out and eating better ...it's pretty easy for me to get in shape I just have to watch what I eat and workout about 20 min three times a week ...then two months later I wake up and I'm ripped ...

For east coast I really wanted to be in shape and bring a game ...this time for open I will train harder , be in better shape , and bring a better game .....but honestly I miss being in a circle so much that I wish I was my plane ticket was bought already and open was tomorow ...I have a couple of tricks I know I an hit right now so ....whatever ...let's play

^ true ... I make some calls ...

Today I decided to go outside in my new qs and test my left calf by doing some kicks with two bags that need breaking in ..

My leg feels alot better but still needs some time before I shred ....

I did have a good productive time though ...
Hit
Inside kicks with good arc and crank
-ss sole kick
- sole kick > opp sole kick
-sole kicking inspin duckin toe bs
-sole kick> inside kick>inside kick repeat x 2
-swirling ss knee bump be
- toe>opp clipper>opp clipper ss toe repeat bs while thinking of
dimwalk ripwalk blur
-ducking x rake bsos
-spinning duckin x take bs
-inside kick > right toe is flip and needs work
-reverse swirl > reverse walkover>ss butterfly repeat
-also tried to hit pickup with considering magic hop and opened a window that I'm pretty sure I could hit swifter if I explore more

-realized that my magic hop off of my left foot sucks and that my whole balance would improve if I correct that and keep focus on the clipper position of my ankle during inside kicks

Depending on what my boss says in the next hour and a half ....I will purchase a plane ticket to Portland today ....

Like the unusuals man :D That stuff helps like crazy with bag control, I've been told. Can't wait to see that video. I'd donate to you, but I'm so low on cash myself, which is why I've been stitching like crazy lately. Good luck with everything dude. Peace

I feel really lucky to have such an active crew to kick with. I got back into playing again after finding out that Justin Dale had been living like two blocks from me for a couple years. I feel like I wasted so much time being inactive. I imagine having so much help from everyone here will help me improve a little faster, but above all I think the social aspect of playing has been a major motivator for me. Sunday is my favorite day of the week.

I wish my friend in New Orleans was more into playing again so you could have someone to teach. I bet that would really help you improve the basics you just mentioned (like your flip magic hop)... you'd have to rethink and rearticulate some very basic things in order to explain it to a beginner. I saw a chart recently that looked like this:
How We Learn
10% of what we READ
20% of what we HEAR
30% of what we SEE
50% of what we SEE and HEAR
70% of what is DISCUSSED with OTHERS
80% of what is EXPERIENCED PERSONALLY
95% of what we TEACH TO SOMEONE ELSE
~William Glasser
I guess if you are kicking as actively as you do that you are already learning pretty efficiently... but motions like having to catch your clippers and hold them in the right spot for a beginner to show them proper form might lead to more breakthroughs. You probably already know all of this from teaching music.

I also think there's something to be said about having to learn on your own. It's not nearly as fun, but from personal experience I learn extremely quickly in any situation in which I know I absolutely have no one else to rely on. Years ago after I sold my electric bass I broke the high E string on my guitar. Because I was too lazy to fix it I ended up looking up old slap bass videos, and ended up learning the foundations of slap style on my guitar over the course of maybe a week or two. I think had I ever taken bass lessons I would have been too fixed on taking it slow, over thinking everything, getting caught up practicing other things, and worst of all relying on someone else to spoon feed me how I should learn. I probably would not have learned those basic physical movements nearly as fast. I've had a really hard time getting myself to solo session... the pacing is a very difficult component to overcome for me because I'm so used to having links and tricks handed to me, and then being able to sit and rest for a minute or two to absorb what everyone else is doing. Until I learn to deal with this I'd say there's a strong case for me being at a disadvantage in some regards (at least in terms of improving as a player).

I think to reach mastery of your craft there's inevitably a little bit of tricking your own brain involved... whether deliberate or not. Our brain has an amazing ability to meet expectations whether or not the situational conditions are right or not (like the placebo effect). Exposure is very important. I bet if you took two kids from birth, gave them each a guitar, and exposed one of them to only alternative rock, while the other only to exceptionally high level musicians like Paco de Lucia or Michael Brecker... even if they practiced the exact same amount the latter would likely develop musical ability (pitch; rhythmic accuracy) at a greater rate. A year later the first one would be on his way to covering some Green Day tunes while the other may have developed some pretty remarkable technique in a very short time. I am not really sure if Europe has the same stoner hacky sack culture that we have in the United States, but I think that association really hinders the development of our tiny pool of players early on. For a couple years I considered a few wonky tricks and serves the height of what could realistically be done in this sport... breaking that perceived skill ceiling is a task in and of itself, and while I recognize most concepts now (and see them as attainable) I still have a lot of trouble following along with certain tricks with lots of symposium elements someone like David Clavens pulls. I wonder if the average cultural exposure to this sport was more in the realm of actual footbag if new players/laymen could naturally recognize moves and concept in the way anyone who knows a little bit about basketball can recognize different dunks.

In any case I'm glad you are going to make it to Portland in August. I'll PayPal you some money very soon!

Was that a subliminal slip? Hopefully you'll find the level of competition more challenging at USO.

Haha, if it was, I take offense to that as a fellow competitor...

Mark, so glad you are gonna make it to USO. I'm considering it myself, since plane tickets from Denver->Portland are so cheap. Hmmm...

 I hate autocorrect. Just a phone typo ...Lololol
When I showed up at east coast and saw Nathan , I thought ...oh shit ... And even though my first day routine went well i was lucky that I won with the way I constantly dropped routine on the second day ....

As far as open... I'll be taken no prisoners , showing no mercy on sponsors , and (getting my ass kicked ) , which is another reason i can't wait to go ...

I had a session ( and easy one )
Hit some string thats were
10 4s > 2 3s > 6 4s > bunch of threes

First i want to thank you for your donation and looking forward to meeting you in Portland ....

I wish I had a scene here ...99 % of all my sessions are solo and I am more used to this pace than doing a run every 2 minutes ...
I had no choice but to play mostly on my own ...I did get a chance to kick with rob creel a bunch. And Richard Abshire has given me endless advice on training , tricks , theory, and gear over the years , ...I've been lucky to get to be ok at footbag by myself but I crave the teachings of others ...I couldn't do 10 ripwalks until meeting Dave clavins and then I hit 20 , couldn't do a swirl at all until I met John schneider and was hitting swirling spinning before to long ...
I do agree that teaching basic components is important to understandin ones own game.
As far as the music lessons....if u would have had a good teacher then u wouldn't have felt rushed and would have still benefited ....it's not that you can't progress on your own , it's just that having a teacher helps Guide you along a path of building good correct fundamentals ...it's the same thing as I'f u learned martial arts on your own Versus training with a master ....you may become stronger and more aware , but inevitably you'll get your ass kicked ....

I do understand the difference between training and playing with others ....
There are certain things I do when I session by myself that I couldn't do in a group ....but both have advantages ....I learned like 10 new tricks in one day at east coast because of others...

As far as others recognizing tricks ...
It's possible but I don't feel that they could give any relavent opinion in the difficulty or execution of it
