Steel City Freestyle
Played some footbag with Nick, Nathan, Ted F. and maybe four others. Good session.
Nathan is getting sicker. Loved wauxpin to ss inf. swirl
•ducking inf. swirl third try. Third time.
•wauxspin - inf swirl
•very nice right side quantum ss inf.'s
•ps mirage bsos (first time flip)
•several pixie ducking clippers
•paradox barrage bs, over 2 b2b strings
•blurry whirls
•one or two decent flip stepping sets (once bsos)
•drilled some illusions
•hit some decent drifters
•hit a tiltless string to warm up with the basics (mirages/legovers) first try

Made it to NYFA jam for the Thursday session. Actually played for over an hour despite being out of shape, rusty and overcoming some cold.
It was great to play with NYFA, etc, and to catch up with everyone.
Highlights:
New Personal Eclipse record (12, as witnessed by three players)
Ducking wauxspin and ducking swirls both first try
footed diving dyno 2nd and third tries out of three
Got to say hi to kitty
Total treat to see DC play in person for the first time in like a year and a half
Also rad to see Ken who was in from Denver
Too many highlights, regarding catching up with friends
Got to play with Nick Polini which I rarely have time for during the semester

Played with NYFA. Great session. Drew and Dave B. both impress me in different ways. Drew's game keeps getting better and better and and Dave has better strings length and variety each time. It was great to see the crew.
Had one of my better sessions that I can remember. Tried not to push myself too hard, since I have taken off so much time from playing regularly, but I still felt stronger than I have in a long time, and in some ways better.
• Hit probably more contacts of pm-inf.-repeat, to start my session than probably ever.
• Hit about 5 of my cleanest con. ducking butterflies.
• Worked on my left-sided quantum form
• Hit a bunch of wauxspins, including a few ducking ones.
• Got super close to paradox barrage-wauxspin
• Flip swirl second try
• Osis- whirling swirl, first try, mid-string
• 11 consecutive eclipses
• Flip reaktor, first try ever, as a bail
• Hit a string with many ducking clippers and ducking pm's.
Generally, a satisfying session.

Been playing a bunch with PSU this week. Three sessions. It's keeping my anxiety in check, which will surface in your last month or so of grad school.
Some of my recent sessions have been really good. One with NYFA about a month back was great. I find that when life is at its most difficult, footbag sometimes matters the most. I am so lucky to have it, and some of the friends I have made while playing it.
Recent highlights
• Hit several quantum moves in a short period of time
• had a string of about 25-30 contacts of a drill into a reasonable string
• Had a sting with whirls and dynos bsos
• Had some strings with both spins in them
• Hit some DLO variations on one side (clipper, toe and paradox)
• started coming around to hippy atomic, both sides
• eclipse x 10 +, multiple times
• weak eclipse, a couple times here and there
• ducking butterfly is feeling so much better
• having a ton of fun with ducking osis, such as into far bf swirl, twirl, etc
• eclipse into spinning eclipse
It's been a blast. I have not done any barrages and barely any whirls. I should incorporate more drifters.
I am going through a lot right now. Just another month in a half and I can start a new life, anywhere in the world that I want. It will probably be in Pittsburgh for a bit. I miss my dad and my new nephew. I am just going to have make it a little farther.
Meanwhile, My show is going to be amazing. I cant wait for those attending the PSU jam to see it. I will make certain to have the key available for those attending on Saturday, if possible.
Just got to pass my orals on Tuesday. Everything else is autopilot.

Played with Nathan before learning to stitch with Nick P and George of PSU.
Stitched my first bag! Thanks Nathan/Nick! Felt pretty natural though a bit nerve-wracking at times.

Highlights from session:
• 1 attempt at breaking my personal Eclipse record of 12: now it's 13
• Osis-swirl- repeat, first try
• Blenders
• Getting to know flip step a bit better
• Hippy atomics out of PM
• Couple decent strings

"That's what happens when you let grandpa have the car."
hahahaha Best quote ever.
Awesome final product with that bag. I like it man. Hopefully going to stitch tomorrow and finish my first 14 panel.
Great highlights. I like the osis> swirl rpt. Great for contrizzol.
Hope to see ya soon man.
Stop by Irving's cafe and say hi if you're in the area. I'll be here til like midnight, studying with Nadiah.

Introduced the PSU laser printers to ultrasuede tonight with Nathan. Neato does not begin to describe how fast and perfectly the shapes just appear...
In addition to that, I have reason to celebrate. It will be my tenth year anniversary of not smoking this week AND I will be getting an MFA. Only two more grades to go and one more class tomorrow. Fingers crossed for so many reasons.
The best news of all, is that I will be heading back to PGH soonish. I may be the only person to play footbag there, but, well, Josh G. is relatively nearby!
Had a few breakthroughs on guitar recently, also. All in all, things are generally alright.
Beer.

Nice.
Everything sounds awesome
How was the first bag stitch? I've been meaning to do one lately. The first one is, like, the most satisfying experience, especially if it's even half-way playable! Also, props on the MFA! What are you going to do with it? Can you teach with one? I think my former art school accepts MFA instructors.

The bag is totally playable too. Better than several I purchased. Just got to nurse this hurt leg (injury during my thesis installation) and finish packing...
I can teach with an MFA. I have been teaching these last two years. Great experience.
Plan on spending the next bit of time teaching, helping my dad with renovating his building, working on some programming, art and electronics and reading in general. Basically, nursing some wounds, honing some skills, marketing my work and setting the path to teach, produce more work and potentially pursue a PHD in the areas of Philosophy or Design.
Definitely want to catch up on reading some of the classics and finally teach myself to read music, so that I can pass it on to my nephew (only musician in the family and Felix loves music).
Mostly, I just want to be a human again, for a bit, and not an academic. And, sleep. I want to sleep for a month.

That art installation is really cool. I'm assuming it was your final project? Looking at it makes me definitely think it'd be a cool background for a footbag piece. Like, if you could choreograph a routine, and have the lights interact with the music at the same time.
Not sure if the Jay project is as intricate as that, but looking forward to the footage nonetheless.
Congrats on finishing school...welcome back to the human race.

Hey Ken- Yeah the Jay project is something that I am certainly looking forward to. Not a lot of planning went into it, but we definitely worked hard on to make something awesome. Jay did some pretty impressive stuff in a challenging environment and his girlfriend captured some great footage. I simply worked the installation the best I could to accommodate for the visibility of the shred (for the viewer) and the the bag (for Jay). As I said, I am looking forward to it!
Played today with some of the PSU crew. Had a great time warming up with Ryan, Ivan and then with Nathan, Mark and Miguel. Here are some of the highlights:
• Started with 50 of the deepest toe stalls I have ever made
• 29 mirages first try
• 8 weak mirages first try (not a highlight, but something that I need to keep track of)
• 19 consecutive legovers (dropped on 20 which of course was going to be my last). This is all good, because I do indeed need to revisit tiltless in order to work on my form
• Footed 15 consecutive eclipses, first and only try of the day, which is pretty awesome since it's my new record, and my last record of 13 (complete) was last session, and again was the first and only attempt.
• Osis to swirl continues to feel like a very strong link and I am pretty excited about that.
• Atomic on my right side feels increasingly good
• First step set attempt of the day was likely the strongest I have ever stepped on that side- thanks to Mega-insights from Nathan
• Again, on my right-handside, my first attempt all day at quantum (trip walk out of PM) was likely the strongest I have done.
• Later on I schooled a new approach at Drifter that Nick told me Nathan taught him. I got it within a handful of tries, while sore, in Sauconys. Pretty exciting.
Beyond all that, it was great chatting with Ivan who dabbles (like a pro!) in a lot of the technology and things that I am into. That was great. Additionally, it was rad hanging out with Nathan and figuring out how to turn Illustrator files into ultrasuede magic, all through modern technology.
Tempted to go out and shred some more!

Thanks Zach!
Been playing a lot this week. Saturday with NYFA, in jeans and civilian sneakers. Twice on Monday. Once Yesterday and once today with Nathan.
Mostly I have been working on drifters. I hit paradox drifters on both sides. Today I hit them on one side today with a far more conservative approach.
Been schooling these whirls where I take the delay deeper. Hit about 7-9 of them on my weak side consecutively. Then the same on my strong side. My strong side whirl is my weak side stepping set. I found that my stepping form is better out of a deeply caught whirl and I hit a decent ripwalk out of it.
My NYFA goal was to try a bunch of weak spins. It helped. Today I hit spinning clipper to same symposium mirage (second try). Then I was able to recreate it on my flip side.
Been practicing my toe delays. Trying not to scoop them. Freezing them with a more deliberate magic hop. It's working out nicely. I was able to do some good atomics and quantums out of these and I hope to work this until I can really play out of my paradox mirages- the idea being that at least if I am doing paradox mirage, it is going somewhere interesting- ie: towards a toe-game.
Learned that my clipper form has to be altered if I want to play into swirl. Hit a bunch of swirls this way. Working on my osis too, so I can see it as the stall is coming down- less scoopy and with more compression to play out of. Nathan had some good feedback about this.
Torques are feeling real good.
Hit drifter to weak side barrage today. Felt so good. Definitely made me feel like my effort on drifter is going somewhere.
Hit flip twirl second try, though it looked pretty wretched. Proud of a spotted-osis to weak side swirl. Working barrages slowly into my game.
Anyway, my back is stiff and sore. Perhaps I shouldn't have played today, but I did. Gonna try to play one more sessions with Nathan on saturday before he leaves for Oregon. Might go outside and school some consecutive ducking clippers and legovers.
What can I say? It feels good to be finished with school. I can't put into words how difficult the last semester has been for me. In fact, the last year or two of my life I have been pushing myself pretty far. I took one extra responsibility and I still got a 4.0 GPA. At the end of the day, my MFA was a lot easier than footbag.
Yeah. I got a beer to finish. We'll see about that other stuff.
One more week of my State College lease. Probably will be moved out and back into Pittsburgh before then. Cheers

Went out and played some more. Got both paradox drifters on film.
Think I'm starting to understand DLO better, now that B. Cooke told me to emphasize the horizontal motion rather than the vertical motion around the bag. Feels good to attack it.
Ducking clipper is feeling a lot more fluid.
What I did not keep footage of was a dozen or so torques that felt effortless but that did not quite compress into a deep delay.

Considering going out for a third session. I should really be packing though... :/ God it's fucking weird to be done with school.
