Erik Chan, May 2012

Post by Muffinman »

Hey guys.
Here's my first video after moving to London, Ontario. The music I was listening to is also by a duo from London :) I've been practising tricks I'm not good at, so I think my variety is a bit better this time around. I'd love comments. Please and thank you.

Thanks for the vid!

One thing that I have noticed in your vids is your spinning. I feel like you aren't confident at knowing where the bag will rise after you set. I have the same problem and practicing gyro clippers helps a lot.

TJ: I'm not really sure what you mean. Like, I don't set straight?

I have a weird question, actually. Does it sound like I land too hard on some tricks? Especially double downs? If so, how would I land softer?

Wow. You're shredding balls in this vid. I love how easy your gyro mixers look.
I like to play.
I want to play good.

First, I hope I didn't come off as rude, I had no intention of it and if I did, then sorry. Your shred in this vid is good, and I enjoy the variety of tricks you are hitting in it. It's good to see someone about the same age as me still improving.

About the spins, its actually odd. It looks like with gyro dlo and spinning rev whirl, there isn't much of a problem, but with spinning clipper:
1. the set is maybe too high, or
2. the set is not straight, or
3. you are spinning too much, meaning the set is going a bit too far forward.

I notice with Honza, and a lot of the Finland crew that, especially with gyro stuff, the set really stays behind them, almost like an osis set, if that makes sense.

I hope that helps...does it?

Erik,

For the landing too hard stuff... I had a similar problem (I weigh 180 lbs.). If you get your dexes in earlier on the downtime, then you will have more time to cushion your landing.

Great Shred! I liked seeing everything both sides, something I've been shooting for these days. I hit a ton of rev whirling stuff... I would love to see you hit some regular whirls mixed in.
Go out and shred already.

Thanks guys.

TJ: Oh, I know what you mean. I think it was just on those spinning clippers from the first run, though, because I was playing out of tricks that are awkward to spin out of. Maybe also on that spinning mirage later on too. But I think my spinning is usually okay otherwise?

Damon: Thanks. Yeah, I try to start the dexes sooner than I used to, but it still feels like landing hard. For whirls, I haven't done them since 2004 because they hurt my knees. I wore knee braces since then up until, like, last year because of it. So I think I'll stay away, though I'd like to add blenders and I do the occasional blazing (though that hurts if I do too much too).

Sweet, always a pleasure to watch an Erik Chan video.

I liked your trick selection in this vid. I'd love to see some symp swirls/rev swirls/twirls in there

I noticed this watching the video, before reading your comment. I thought you often look flat footed. You should try to land more on your toes. I don't think it matters if you end up standing flat footed, but if you land toe first and then sink down to flat footed this really helps the landing. You should aim to land so that it feels really comfortable. Part of this with some of your double downs, especially down double down, is about starting the dexes as early as you can, so that you can do them slower and land softer.

I have the same issue with heavy landings on those tricks, and I sometimes wonder about how much softer they can actually get.

I thought your form looked pretty good though, and I wasn't sure if the heavy landing was just a consequence of the camera angle and sound. Tricks were you're hopping on to a dexing leg almost have to have a heavyish landing. Your game reminded me of Dylan Fry. Nice video.

Yeah, it's weird, because some tricks, like, ducking symp mirage I can do and land almost soundlessly in comparison. I think it's just double downs and whips. I think I do do whip dexes last-moment though, so that might be the answer. I'm just not sure how I can start double down dexes much earlier than I'm already trying to.

Also, thanks for the comparison to Dylan Fry. I take that as a huge compliment! I love his game.

Commented on YT, but not here. Enjoyed the video a lot. Loved how easy the GDLOs looked, and also really liked the drill with vortex and spinning ducking.

Nice video again. I also liked how the GDLOs looked, it's a trick I really like seeing hit.

About the landing hard stuff, I noticed something on the Blurriest's: As Damon said, I don't think the problem is the double dexes per se, probably just getting into them earlier (from stepping in this case). I noticed that you set pretty low from your stepping set. The set could probably use a little more height in tricks such as blurriest in order to get faster into the double dex.

Keep posting videos

Hey Erik!

Finally spent some time on modified while not at work and watched this vid. Really enjoyed it. Looked like more variety than I recall seeing in recent blog videos. Great stuff!
