Well ...today after playing saxophone for 5 hours I decided to test out my ankle ... Only played for a short while but had fun ...
My ankle needs more rest so I'll wait a couple of days before I play again ..
I have decided to try and not stress myself out ... I will play indoors from now on at my music studio where I have enough room to put mats ... Also I will be out of the humidity and 104 degree whether ...
Today I played in my back yard
I hit
Ripstein > osis > butterfy > butterfly repeat x 4
Swirling Dyno > torque bs
Swirling rev up
Pixie opp swirl
Pixie ss mirage > smear rpt
Ducking legover > blender
Reverse swirling ss symp whirl> Dyno is easy for me now
Spinning ducking legover>ss blender > p illusion > paradon > run
Lots of double switches .. Thought of it as a reverse double torque an somehow that helped ....consistently hit it with ease
Datw in >opp toe > rpt> datw out> opp toe > repeat x 2
Really focused on upper body and where my hands are when I catch my clipper and also when I do a pixie

Right now im in the last part of the drive from Tennessee to new Orleans ... Michelle, my twins and I all went . It was a beautiful much needed vacation ... I will write more on my vacation later ....
I have gained weight , not played my horn at all and i played footbag once for a little while on vacation .
I have exactly 6 weeks to prepare for open .
Starting Monday I will begin getting in shape and playing reguraly. I will not call it training ...I will call it shredding . I injuried my ankle before I left and it seems to be healed . I have a shred plan and it has been adjusted to actually be attainable ... As far as the comp ...I will for sure compete ....but getting solid and progressing in my game will be my focus instead of getting all pressured about comp ...
I really want to focus on a good warm up , consectuives , drills , mutiple drills bsos , runs, a routines , and small bits of my shred will be devoted to the links that even though I won't use in comp ...I have goals to work towards . That way I can stil hit p blender > ripstein even though Im not consistent with it .
Anyway ....had to get my blog back close to the top .

After the above session I taught a one hour saxophone lession and then found out that tonight my mom had the kids.
Michelle and I went out to Frenchman street. For those of you who have not been to New Orleans , Frenchman is where the Jazz is , Frenchman is when the reggae is , the funk, the street beats, the performers . Bourban street is where the crap is . Except for a few places.
Tonight we went to see Kristen Morales sing and hear the bass player that plays my jazz brunch gig . I brought my horn .
They sounded great . The stlye was her singing 1920'30's swing mixed with true dixieland in new orleans . Drums, upright, banjo, sax/clarinet, voice.
As soon as my wife and I sat down Kristin called me up on stage . The first song was AFter youve gone....which Ive heard many times but should have taken the time to learn and will do tomoorow . I am beginning to hear my way through more music than ever before. I have been playing my horn every day and listeingin to music alot, and started to go and sit in with musicians .....I have not really utilized the scene where I live and now I have decided to experience as much music as I possibly can.
I sat in for the next 4 or 5 tunes. Sat right next to the other sax player... Simon Lott was on drums ..he is one of the coolest guys I have ever met . he teaches at colleges around here and also tours around the world....he is a first class player....... I was honored to be a part of the music. The rest of the tunes felt better and better as we went along. The sax player next to me told me I sounded like Sammy Butera after a solo which is funny because I havent been playing that stlye recently but the music tonight inspired that sort of improvisation from me.....I blew my horn at a slightly louder volume than I normally do for one of the solos..... I like blowing soft and having a microphone .. On break I hung out with the band and got the guys phone numbers who I didnt already have... all players seem to be really welcoming of my playing and felt that it was a good blend. I will meet up and gig or at least shed with all of them ....When two saxophone players get on a stage together there can be a tension but when the guest saxophonist shows up for a pleasing musical experience and not to pipe anyone or show off, then it can work.
After we left ....Michelle told me that outside the club was a street performer who had a huge instrument that she didnt know what it was ....
it was a duo ....drums and this huge harp like africa string instrument that during the first song I realized he tuned to A major. I listened to a couple songs.....my wife said it was some of the most peacful and awesome music she had ever heard.....it was a mix between sitar and harp ...he was improvising melodies with changing meter and the drummer was interesting . After a tune I realized I wanted to play so I told him I was a horn player....he told me to play.......As I looked at their sign ....It said drummer , cora, and saxophone...... so I actaully completed the fit. I dont often play in B major on the tenor saxophone, so this was a nice opportunity to compose melodies, play harmony, be ryhtmic, and work out the Bb to B transition on my horn ......I played about and hour . Then decided to show them my footage....I shredded for about 30 min....to the music, then exchanged numbers, then played one more tune and left.....even though it wasnt very similiar ....it reminded me of Ravi Coltrane playing duo with a harp
I have been putting alot of my time into my music....I have been listening to lots of different music. My ear is getting better, and my ability to execute through harmony on my instrument is better than ever....... I have decided to arrange some Monk tunes for five saxophones...and then add a rythym section......Simon told me he has a studio where I can record so I will defintely do that.....
Tomorrow Im gonna call a drummer, guiutar, and bass player to set up a rehersal to play some joe henderson, coltrane, and monk tunes....
oh well ...this just became my footbag / musical experience blog.

I'd be interested to hear some of your stuff. Do you compose at all? I don't know jazz very well, so I don't know if it's all just on the fly kinda stuff? I know my brother plays mostly from his head (piano) in the moment but also composes some songs that I guess he finds himself playing over and over? I used to play clarinet and saxophone. I'm also interested in your gigs and how you make a living off of them. What kind of gigs and what kind of audiences and venues? I also really like reading about awesome footbaggers who are also awesome at other kinda unrelated skills. Footbaggers are a talented bunch.C-Fan wrote:Nice change of pace in the blog. Enjoyed that.
@ K ....... Looking forward to metting you too man.... At first I wasnt going to bring my saxophone but I dont think Im gonna leave with out it at this point .... Maybe even Ill visit a Jazz club while Im there..... I would like to bring my tenor sax but Ill have to see whats up with carry ons on the plane...my sax does not get checked....no matter what.....unless I bring a different one .
@ E...... I have just started composing at all.....Ive written songs years ago , but honestly lost drive in music and spent 6 years playing more footbag than playing music....Now however things have switched and I play more music....
I do play improvisational music but also played composed music....I listen to groove and swing based gypsy jazz and also listen to modern cats like Mark Turner and Brad Meldou ....I listen to yo yo ma play classical cello and today was listening to west african music....
Sometimes Jazz can be both composed and improvisational ..... And many times if the musician listen to each other and have the tools on there instrument....you cant tell the difference of whether its made up or not....... Also. I have been working on lots of john Coltrane tunes......ie....central park west and giant steps......even though the goal is to express oneself musically with a piece ....the stucture and sounds of the piece require a certain awareness of the harmony so that the soloist can spontaneously create melodies that float over and carve out the underlying supportive harmony......
As far as my gigs...
I play wed thur and fri from 5-7 at a New Orleans reatsurant ...I play solo piano and sing...... I walk bass with my left hand, comp and solo with my right and sing at the same time.....I do everything from Frank Sinatra , Dean Martin, John Coltrane, Standards, New Orleans Dixie land and even some Cure some times..... I also play on sundays at the jazz brunch with a trio ....Upright bass and guitar and me on sax...... we do losts of jazz and a little funk....sometimes we also play free
Then I am also in a cover band that plays about 2 or three times a week . We do everything that was ever on the radio...from the 60 s rock to back that ass up....I play keyboards and my role is to basically recreate the sounds and feel that is on the record....... I hate most of the songs we play but have found ways to be productive and song all the parts I play even over the rap stuff.....In one day I have sang Sinatra and then went in front of a club and rapped Vanilla Ice..... we do casinos, clubs, parties, and weddings........
Lately I have been going to listein to lots of music in the city....I know alot of the musicians in New Orleans so I can go and sit in at numerous places.....lately Ive been doing this more......I will be getting a cd together shortly that I can market myself with where I sing more and make it more presentable but lately Ive been mosty practicing my saxophone and becoming more fluent on my instrument and with my ear .....

Today I had a one hour session
Mostly worked on keeping the bag in the air and flipside pixies and stepping
- fog> run with 30+ contacts mostly threes but ha 6 or 7 fives in it
- barfly > twirl > p blender midrun
- spinnin duckin osis > p blender mid run

-flip double switch > run > spinning legover > double switch > parkwalk > Dyno > torque midrun
- Janiwalker bs
- ripstein bsos
- pixie dlo > run
- most runs had 6 to 8 unique ducks in it
- flip scorp felt weird
- flip Magellan > smear > pixie legover < repeat > run with Stepping out of osis with blur , sidewalk, ripwalk, ss dlo ,stepping opp clipper all bs
- spins felt better
- spinnin duckin p mirage > run > ducking legover > flip Magellan > toe ducking osis > twirl > stuff
P blender > 20 contacts bs
- 13 tripless mid run
- flip pixie dlo
- worked on flip p illusion > smear alot
- swirling rev up > long run > drop on swirling spinnin

Thanks for the videos!
Yeah, Allan said that some of the BBcode might not work initially, including video embedding. He has to convert it or something so it works with the new forums.
