Hey Dustin, I just wanted to let you know I'm following your blog. I wish I were better and more familiar with your game so I could give more challenges and stuff. Until that point I'll settle with saying your highlights are awesome.

Thanks! Well if you think of any random challenges I'd be happy to hear them.

Session with Steve and Alex today. Alex's pdx whirls are great so I got some good advice on them which was great and led me to

pdx whirl *12
ss osis * 14

none of these are new but they were all much easier then ever before
stepping ss torque
janiwalker both sides
barraging ss butterfly

legbeater > blur *4.5 on flip side
some nice flip nuclears
blazing > infinty *3 (should have done ripwalks instead of infinties as it's not any harder)
some nice pdx flails
some midstring mobius which are getting way easier. Same with vortex.

At the end I just did a ton of jumping off 1 leg for leg strength training. Not sure if it will help, my always present almost shin splints did not think it was a good idea though so we'll see if I do it any more.

Session with Steve, Alex, and Dave today. Not great for me...

upped pdx whirl to * 14
ss osis to *16
nuclear butter > nuclear pdx mirage like it was easy
some symp stuff
failing at doing double leg overs well
some quantum and barraging stuff. Both quantums are pretty much the same but flip barraging still doesn't work. Oh well it'll get there. I think I'm getting closer to toe blur back to back.

to end it I wanted to see if I could still do huge amounts of infinities. I used to do stuff like this more often and it was detrminatal to my progression so I've been forcing myself to do more intense shorter runs but I wanted to see if I could still do long strings. First try

100 infinities > 30 osis

and that's the end of the session so I was pretty pleased with that.

Why do you say it was detrimental to your progression?

It was detrimental because I became focused on it. I only wanted to play with long strings (even when practicing alone) so I didn't ever hit moves that were hard for me. This meant that my strings were super boring to watch as they were long strings of mostly stepping + bop. I didn't every want to try hard stuff in strings that I might drop on so the hard stuff didn't really get practiced at all. Therefore I had some giant holes in my game in addition to not being able to shred with much density.

Also, because I was only hitting stuff that was easy for me I didn't really have any real reason to improve my form.

Now if I want to do long strings I do routine practice or sometimes something at the end of the session like 1 string of ripwalks or infinities.
While playing with others I try to do denser shred/shorter strings. And while playing alone I try to mostly just drill a particular concept that I'm bad at or that I want to learn.

Bad solo session today. Shin splints felt bad (I think I need to switch back to lavers).

Flip pixie is so bad. It has already been passed up by flip atomic and flip quantum when I've probably practiced those much less. I'm at a point where I'm thinking of just giving up on it. If I can use the time to get atomic better I can toe shuffle that way, no need for stupid flip pixies. It's just so bad :(

Flip spin/gyro is also so bad but at least it's getting better. The weird thing is it's fine out of a zoom, it's just if I try it not out of a zoom that it messes up. Oh well it's getting better.

Wanted to try some nuke stuff but it was to cold and I never got warm/stretchy enough.

did 26 contacts of infinity > infinity > pdx whirl > pdx whirl. I want my pdx whirls to feel like infinities so this drill helped me on that. All the work going into pdx whirls is starting to show. I can do gyro whirl, spinning whirl, and ducking whirl without hurting myself now. Something that I wasn't able to do before, so yay for that.

Did a few quantums just to get them fresh in my mind. They are getting better and I hope that means that soon barraging will be in a similiar state.

Good solo session today :) .

Switched back to lavers from my quantums. Playing in them is like playing with an old friend. Plus I think they will help with my shin splints.

So the only bad thing today was a pdx whirl kick to the left shin. This wouldn't normally be a problem but my left shin splints exploded when I did it. Ouch... other then that it was a great session.

I'm really probably am just going to give up on flip pixie so I didn't drill it at all today. I tried some faerie to see if that would be more balanced and it was so we'll see if I can keep it up, improving on both sides equally with that set.

For sets I hit my first surge! I've wanted to hit this trick for so long now and today I hit a bunch of surging butterflys strong side. I'm pretty positive it's slurry but that isn't actually my biggest concern. I seem to be in the minority but I think that trick looks fine slurry.

A ton of spinning/gyro stuff.

50 contacts of gyro clipper>osis on my strong side
28 contacts of it on my flip (woo hoo flip gyro is getting better, though obviously not as good as my strong)
on that thread I hit a flip mobious for the first time. I think I could do mobius > mobius soon
42 contacts of osis > spinning clipper (woohoo flip spin is getting way better, that's what would always mess me up on this drill before)
a double spinning clipper on my strong side. I get these every once in a while but I can never hit them on command. Maybe this time I'm actually getting it.
spinning whirl is much easier after all this pdx whirl practice so I did that a couple times and felt strong
some super downside non pdx whirls
some pdx blenders. As soon as I get these blurry blenders should be no problem
lots of flip ducking/diving (I'm working on kens challenge :) )
some twirls. I love that trick and can do it fine but the percentage is such that I drop it way more then I should. Trying to get that up so I can throw it all the time.

Stanford session today but without Brian and Amotz it wasn't the same as usual :(

Didn't really hit to much stuff but here's some highlightsish...

multiple 5 adds with different sets is getting way way easier (thanks for the challenge ken). Today I had a string with blurry whirl, sumo, spinning whirl, mobious, ducking pdx whirl in it which is great for me. Also worked on some 5 > 5s such as spinning whirl > blurry whirl and nuke butterfly > blurry whirl. Also motion > mobious.

25 contacts of flip far osis rpt. I think that means I'm done with this drill. I've moved onto the following...

torque > infinity rpt. Today was the first day and I only tried it once but I got a good 10 contacts in.

In an attempt to up my gyro drills from yesterday I hit stepping ss osis > spinning butter * 12 which is a fun drill for me. I think stepping far osis > gyro butter would be good to but my gyro butter is awkward. Something to work on I guess.

Thing I wanted to drill today were atomics, quantums, and barraging but my shin splints wouldn't let me. I can't get the explosion needed for those tricks without hurting my leg... I do think the lavers are helping though :)

pdx whirl rpt is done for now. I still can't do a ton of them but individually they are at a point where they happen in runs frequently now so I can practice them that way. Plus spinning, ducking, and gyro whirl are crazy better now.

All in all I don't know what to practice next. I want it to be atomic, nuclear, barraging, and symp tricks but those are what I can't do at the moment... I'll have to think of something else to drill I guess.

solo session where I avoided everything that would injure shin splints.

16 contacts of blur>whirl I never do toe whirl and have a real hard time with tricks going from toe > clipper in runs so toe whirl would be a great addition to my game. Also like a month ago this record would have been 7 or so if I had actually tried it so that's nice :)

I realized I could drill a ton of swirls without hurting my leg so the records there were...
strong side swirl>reverse swirl 5 contacts.
swirl is much cleaner (although still really bad in the grand scheme of things)
flip side reverse swirl > clipper for 8 contacts (this is really good for me fyi :) )
my flip reverse swirl was drilled hard today. and I can actually do them very regularly! This is compared to right after worlds where I could do them 1 out of 10 times or something.
reverse swirling pickup. I love that trick like twirl but have never been able to do it before but today it worked.
whirling swirl is also better from working on swirl

for badness my torques where off today but I was playing in a confined space and I'm never comfortable with torques under those situations so I don't feel to bad.

Also worked on faerie. It was eh. Sometimes it's very good sometimes it's bad. Does anyone ever hurt their knees doing faerie? It seems possible...

edit: forgot 36 contacts of pdx illusion > butter

Thanks ken. You can thank alex for all the wiffle ball coaching that made it possible.

Bad session yesterday. At steve's house with alex and steve. Alex and steve both played well I broke my promise about pixies but I think I might have made some progress. Who know's we'll see. Main reason it was bad was my left leg was just hurting all over. achilies, shins, and lower quad right above the knee. The first two are just pain and while they make playing hard it's not bad. The last means that if I do anything that will hurt my knee I don't have that muscle their protecting it. That means I basically don't play for fear of hurting myself. I think it's time to take a break from playing every day for a week or so. I'll have to figure out something else to learn...

Didn't play since last thursday. Leg's felt strong + Brian is back so it was a good stanford session. Took it relatively easy. Hit...

Some rev ups in strings
lots of various 5's mid string: ducking paradox whirl, blurry whirl, nuke stuff, mobious stuff, pdx torque stuff, stepping ss torque, motions, pdx blenders etc.
zooming out of torque is much stronger
flip swirls are still getting better
did some pixie training, it's maybe getting better, it's so bad I can't tell

new trick that brian suggested, ducking pdx torque, so that's a new 6 which is nice.

Good thursday session + a late brian's bday

Hit the new tricks...
stepping ss dyno
flip twirl

hit some good symp stuff but then I felt the shin splints. I really don't know how to practice this stuff if every time I do they creep up on me.
lots of midstring 5's during long varied strings.
also 1 try of spinning ducking whirl which was not bad at all

Overall a good session with some annoying pixie and swirl's at the end.

Today I said, "you know what? Fuck pixie. I'm learning that set." So for today I hit...
100 contacts legover>legover to warm up
250 contacts of pixie sets. 150 week 100 strong or so. Something that helped a lot was doing legover>pixie set instead of just trying pixie set move > pixie set move so I did lots of pixie legover > legover rpt or pixie mirage > legover rpt. Stuff like that. I made great progress with this! 5*pixie legover a couple times when my record before was 3 once. Because of all the legovers between pixie tricks this meant I also hit 250 more legovers.
so I had 600 toe contacts total, 250 pixies, 350 legovers.

So for every shred day from now on until I hit Derek's challanges (thanks Derek!) I'm going to do these drills every day (or if I get some weird pixie related stress injury I'll stop).

For the second half we have
120 inside stall > inside stall
50 reverse swirls both sides
stepping ss reverse swirl (new trick! I tried this a while ago but couldn't do it but now I can no problem, that's always great)
flip twirl again

Saturday session as usual. Hit the same 600 or so toe contacts as yesterday for pixie practice + inside stalls + reverse swirls. Pixies no new records but I hit reverse swirl * 9 on strong side which is new I think.

New trick: pixie torque

same pixie + swirl + inside drills

I'm wondering if it'd be helpful to take a day off from the pixies as the pixie muscles are sore from days of doing it now. They seem to be deteriorating a bit.

On the plus side new record of 50 legovers b2b. It's sad that that's about my ripwalk b2b record...

new tricks:
blurry barrage
flip pdx barrage

hit some weird stuff today but didn't play to hard as jeff will be here tomorrow and I'll want to play hard during our stanford session.

Possibly new tricks:

ducking xbd rake both sides
diving xbd rake
flip pdx torque ( which I think will be my strong side soon, as it uses my good torque)
gyro xbd rake both sides

kicked at stanford today. I wanted to do a bunch of symp stuff but I can't on that surface :( Practiced a lot of pdx torques and some dense runs. Nothing really notable just some solid runs. Did work on stepping out of osis and hit

spinning osis >ripwalk > ripwalk > rpt. although it was super ugly...

kind of a strange solo session. Worked on 5's but with 5's I can't just sit their drilling the same thing for a long time or I'll hurt myself.

I hit blurry whirl * 4 first try which is great as before whirls I could only do this *2 and even that was hard
lots of pdx torque bsos strings
blurry whirl > ripwalk > ripwalk rpt.
blurry whirl > sidewalk rpt.
anyway I'm getting better at mixing 5's into strings so that's great.

pixie drills which were different from normal
dimawalk > pdx mirage *12
pixie ss butter > infinity > pdx mirage * 20
legover rpt. * 78 <-- yay up from 50!

I failed at spinning torque and ducking torque. These would both be new 6's for me. I got pretty close to both and since it was a solo session I was wearing mp3 player + headphones which always screws up my spinning and ducking stuff (really anything that makes the cord get in my way). So pdx torque is getting much better so hopefully I'll hit these two and have some new 6's! The number of 6's I can hit is pretty sad, we have...

voodoo (if you count x-dex)
blurry voodoo (if you don't count x-dex)
blurry torque
whirly gig
blurry blender

and that's it. Withen the next month I would like to hit these...

spinning torque
ducking torque
spinning symp whirl
ducking ps whirl
blurry whirl rake
ps whirl rake
stepping ducking pdx whirl

these are on my more long term wish list (say 2 or 3 months)
ps torque
backside dlo
nuclear torque of some type
nuclear flail

we'll see how I manage to do!
