Nick "Houdini" Polini
Re: Nick Polini: Relearning Footbag Is FUN!!! :D (PSU)
Hey Nick, I have been thinking about your situation quite a bit. I don't want to be the devil on your shoulder but I thought I'd share what the last few weeks have been like for me.
When I hit my "fully recovered" window of footbag time a week before the last U.S. Open I played way too hard. It took just a few sessions to re-injure myself. Then I went and kicked in Portland all weekend to the point it hurt to walk. Not smart considering all the advice you and everyone else had given me. At the event I talked most in depth about my shin splints with Brian Cooper and Steve Goldberg. Both were very sympathetic, but they had very different advice.
Brian's advice was much more cautious/conservative (I think he's had his fair share of footbag injuries over the years). He advised taking even more than two months off for a serious shin splint issue, and also suggested a much lighter regimen for easing back into footbag than the average person would likely limit themselves to. Steve on the other hand reflected a more passive approach that it seems a lot of players (including many others I talked to that weekend) used to deal with their physical difficulties as their body had to acclimate to playing. He explained (and I really trust someone with the means to get lots of professional help) that shin splints are caused by the muscles growing faster than the bone "sheath" can accommodate, and the resulting friction between the impacting muscle and protective layer creates the tiny fractures. You know all of this. But even though the protective sheath can't grow at the rate of muscle it will grow, and just like other bone it heals to become stronger and stronger each time. Assuming your tricks and form stay about the same you should be able to push harder and harder each time you heal.
Now if you are coming back only to put attempt after attempt into toe symposium torque you are obviously going to have a problem. Did you even stick to easy stuff or shuffle at all? I am not asking this scornfully. I bring it up because of how well I am feeling after taking just a week (none of that two month shit -- if doing the equivalent of pounding your shins with a rock for hours at a time hurt your legs a couple months ago it's going to hurt now) to heal from the U.S. Open. Shin splints are a progressive injury that will not go away with a couple months of babying if you push too hard when you return. Bone just can't do that. Again you know this. I am on my second or third week of, barring expected muscle soreness, being damn near pain free.

Thanks for the tips, everyone.
Yes, hello, it's me. The hurt kid. I'm down but not out, I guess. I've decided that I've fucked around with these splints for too long and I wanted to take off 10 weeks, like Ken suggested. My ten week mark is at the end of October... So I have almost a full month now until I play again. Nate and Ivan are at ECFC along with all of my other good friends. Definitely depressing thinking about missing my first East Coast tournament since I started attending tournies. I knew that if I went, I would not be able to just sit there and watch everyone shred. No fucking way. I would have cracked so hard. Instead I stayed home with Nadiah. We've pretty much just been studying. I watched her have a session the other day though. She hit her first Legover. Pretty awesome. Anyway, I don't really know why I'm blogging... probably just to let everyone know that I will be back... eventually.. and to say hi to everyone at East Coasts and that I hope they all get first place in every competition.
Not a day goes by where I don't think about footbag.
Today, I thought it would be cool for someone to hit Janiwalker with a heel click between the set and the butterfly.
I've been giving my shins peppermint essential oil massages daily and that actually really helps a lot.
If I could take back one thing in my life, it would be all those stupid fucking attempts for the link I hit in this video:

...The seed of my injury.
See ya on Halloween.

Re: Nick Polini: I'm Back Like Shaq! (PSU)
Dear, Modified:
What's been up man? How's ya daughter?
I'm pleased to announce that I'm back in action as a footbag player
I have made a bunch of changes though... most notably, I switched to G-Units. I know people say that they can make your style sloppy, but I honestly don't care.. they let me play footbag again with the proper cushion I need in a shoe. I will certainly try to keep playing on my toes and cushioning my landings and whatnot, as well. Anyway, stoked on the Units though.. check it: http://image.sneakerhead.com/is/image/s ... 49-1?$480$ Thanks to Peter Holoien in CA.
I had my first session tonight, after my 10 week footbag break. The break showed me a lot, like BAP'ing isn't everything, and there are other things in the world more important than footbag. Don't get me wrong, I'm still super into footbag and I am SO glad to be playing again. I hit some good shit tonight that I am very happy with. Nate hit some cool stuff tonight, like Fairy Reverse Swirl. Ivan hit Osis BSOS, then Osis> Osis> hand catch. Ryan hit Pickup b2b. Everyone had a pretty fun session, I do believe.
Highlights:
Glaucoma (new trick)
Fairy ss Blink (new)
Vortex> Mobius
Nathan showed me what has been wrong with my butterflies and I fixed that tonight.
DLO BSOS a bunch of times. (Always had problems with my flip DLO, finally figured them out)
Figured out flip toe> far blink. BSOS a few times.
Swirling Legover> DOD (Hellz yeahhh)
Some nice runs that I am happy with (on tape)
Some pretty cool cloud kicky runs as well as some Outsider'y runs
Happier than excrement from a pony sphincter to be playing again. Playing safe from now on, for sure.
Stoked for Toolan's visit to PSU this weekend!
Most of all, I learned that Fearless isn't as cool as F[uns]tyle
(Unless you're like.. REALLY good)

I was wondering when the first post was going to happen. Looks like you hopped right back into the mix of things. How strong is your Fairy in your set repertoire, I like Glaucoma. Vortex >Mobius is probably one of my favorite combo's that I will never hit. How were your legs feelin' after the session? Anyways, it's dope that you are back in action, I hope to see much more.

Re: Nick Polini: I'm Back Like Shaq! (PSU)
Yo Derek, thanks for the words dude. My legs feel pretty darn good actually. Can't believe how much you've progressed recently. Keep it up bud.
Ok so, I had kinda a footbag epiphany brought to me by 2 players in specific. Jon Schneider and Ken... Ken told me to play tiltless for a while when I came back to footbag... To be honest, I respect the opinion... but it wouldn't happen. Tiltless... um... how do I put this nicely... Tiltless really sucks
It bores the hell out of me. there's no way I could play strict tiltless for a few weeks. I'd rather kick a wall with a toothpick under my toe nails. BUT... Jon came to PSU a few weeks back and recommended I use more Unusuals. It would certainly take away a lot of the unnecessary impact from sets and shit. I liked the idea, but I kind of just wanted to shred. So I kinda didn't feel like doing that completely, as you can tell from my last session...
Then recently... I started messing with a drill Jon gave me to try out. And I realized how completely fun it is to hit links with primarily [UNS] contacts... WOW. The first drill in my highlights is the first one I'm talking about... After messing with that for a bit, I realized that I wanted to take Ken's and Jon's advice. I wanna play with mostly [UNS] links in my runs until I'm super fluent with Jon-style runs, while mixing tiltless and even kickless in. I also wanna take Kevin's advice on coming back from shin splints/fractures... Just have fun. Don't really drill, just play to have fun. So, thanks to Jon, Ken, and Kevin, I am going to take footbag on in a whole new way....
TL;DR:
Nick's gonna start using more [UNS] links so his legs get better. Thanks Jon, Ken, and Kevin.
I had a session with Nate, Dylan, and Marc tonight. Nate was hitting some cool runs. Dylan is the new guy that hit all major 2 adds BS (except Illusion) in his very first session with Lavers... Well tonight he hit all those 2 adds BSOS. He also hit Mirage> Clipper (First tiltless link). Marc hit Butterfly> Osis> Osis> Osis> Osis> Osis. All of our new guys are showing so much improvement. I had a lot of fun tonight and hit some cool little things.
Highlights:
Jon's Drill: Flapper> Dragon> Dragon Tilt> Far Osis rpt x 4 That was the drill that convinced me. Holy shit, that is fun.
Ducking Dragosis> Spinning Xbd Rake BS
Knee Bump> Ducking Knee Bump> ss Toe> Toe Trade> Fairy Gyro Toe
Xbd Rake> Far Blink
Had a lot of fun experimental runs with Dragon Tilt, Dragosis, some Fireflys, Symp Spitfire BS, Spitfire BS, Snapdragon BS, Furnace (wanna get this flipside soon), Ton of Cloud kicks BS, Tootsie Rolls BS, Blinks BS etc...
Sole> Flapper BSOS
Sole> Flapper> Cloud kick> Flapper BS
Had a great amount of fun tonight and I didn't even have to put my legs in danger. Stoked.
My plan is to get super good an Outsider shit, then by then, hopefully my legs will feel good enough where I can incorporate bigger shred into my game.
Oh yeah, I did a pretty awesome mod on my Units that helps with outside stalls and dragons, they look sick, I'll have to post pics soon.
Gonna study now... or go play with Nate and his friends in the living room... Probably the second one.

What's a dragon tilt? Video?
Good work on the unusual stuff...that's really hard, but I bet rewarding. Can you do fliers/eclipses? I find those are a really nice compliment to unusuals, so you might want to try that out. Glad to hear you're back and having fun.

Re: Nick Polini: I'm Back Like Shaq! (PSU)
Lol yeah, Reverse Dragonosis.
Hey Fodimied,
I have been making a slow but strong comeback to footbag. I almost just typed "comebag". Nice one. Ken would have ripped me apart for that typo
ANYSHITTINGWAY... Footbag has been pretty good. Still not totally back to normal, but I have so much less pain in my shins after playing and stuff. I still need a few days between sessions to heal. Aside from that, shit's been dope. Lots of new stuff with me...
Before Thanksgiving break, I was shredding in Units, which were awesome... until my style and creativity were completely fucked up the proverbial ass by the monsterous clipper wall. It may be great for some players, but I was hitting Osii that I should have never had a shot at saving. It was too much of a crutch.
So, I went home and kicked a little with Jackson first. He's been getting a little better. Not been playing a lot. Then one night I kicked with Drew Martin at a local mall, which was totally fun. He hit some dope zipper/rake runs, where he stepped out of zipper a few times. JEALOUS. Anyway, that was sick.
Then a few days later, Jackson and I drove to Mike Toolan and Corey Hahalis's area and played some shredbagz. It was cool to play with everyone, but I was so disappoint in my game with Units. Whatever, still a super fun night shredding on a tennis court at night while it was rainy and chilly
Toolan is on some sort of a stank-ass comeback. And Corey is one a stank-ass comeup. Both are getting super good. Corey hit some whirls and really nice tiltless with FLAPPERS <3 :') I'm so proud of him.
Then before I went back to PSU, my parents surprised me with a super awesome thing. They took me to a HybridCycles shop and let me pick out an electric bike. If you don't know what that is, then check it out. They're sick. It has been helping me save my legs, so I don't have to walk to my classes, which are 35-40 minutes away. I got an e-Moto Daytona. Green/light grren/brown. Love it so much.
Well once I came back to State College, I started doing some light training... but I switched back to Lavers, and now my "style" and creativity is back... well, coming back anyway.
Nadiah got me 2 new Venus Flytraps because mine died
My new ones are thriving though and have like 20 heads per plant
Just had a session with her actually. She's been really wanting to play recently and she's been doing well. We just worked on basics, like inside kick> inside kick> clipper and stuff. Really happy she decided to start kicking with me again.
Ok, so footbag highlights...
biggest and best highlight was probably Guantlet. I hit it in front of Drew that one night we played.
Flip Void
Been BSOSing DOD pretty easily now.
My session with Nadiah just now, I drilled Pdx Drifters and Fairies... Got some nice stuff with them that I am proud of.
Easy BSOS Pdx Drifter
Pdx Drifter> Reverse Swirl BSOS
Pdx Drifter> Ripstein
Spinning Clipper> Pdx Drifter BSOS (Super easy)
Around 8 contacts of Shut Down> Pdx Mirage rpt, which is great for me, since Flip Fairy has been the bane of my game for a long time.
Also, been watching some old Ryan Thomas videos and I was totally inspired. Tonight, I hit JUGHANDLE!!!! Thanks Ryan.
Nathan wanted me to mention him in this, so..
Nathan fucking sleeps A LOT. He is a sleepfuck.
I am going to stop blogging now, because Nadiah is behind me playing Ninja Fishing on her iPhone yelling that she wants to kill every crab in the world. Bye!!!

Re: Nick Polini: I'm Back Like Shaq! (PSU)
So this will be a sorta quick one since I have a lovely lady waiting for me to come to bed (NICE.. I LIKE. HIGH FIVE!) So tonight I played a session with Nadiah, Nathan, and Ryan. Great stuff hit by all. Ryan hit Near Pickup BS (new on both). Nathan got like Rubberman x1000 and Nadiah got her first Pixie set along with some other basic things she's been working on. We filmed the session, so hopefully that will get posted sooner or later.
Highlights:
Fairy ss Mirage b2b like 8 or 9 contacts.
Some awesome runs that felt good, clean and powerful.. and weird
Dream Drill: Pdx Drifter> Drifter rpt. So stoked when I hit it.
My legs still feel great and no shin pain.
I love footbag again

Re: Nick Polini: I'm Back Like Shaq! (PSU)
YoyoyoyoyoyooooO!~!!!!
Had a session last night with the PSU Crew, with some old ass faces and some new ass faces, and some new ass feces. Last night was the WORLD'S BIGGEST FOOTBAG SESSION EVER!!!!!... at Penn State. People who came to the session with highlights from each:
Ivan: Kinda injured atm, so he just did some basic stuff and sold some bags and took pictures.
Ryan: Did some good basics stuff along with some good BOP stuff.
Nadiah: Hit some Flappers, awesome basic runs with toe stalls, inside stalls, clippers, and inside kicks. Lots of improvement from Nahds
She's still my girl
Oh yeah, she hit Pendulum and Dustpan too!
Collin (New guy): Bought a bag from Ivan, and then proceeded to hit alternating toe stalls x10000000
Then he hit his first Mirage. WTF. This kid was insane and he's so in it for good. Collin: *Does a few alternating toe stalls for his first time ever* "Well, I know what I'll be doing my entire Christmas break." Hell yeah, this kid is gonna get so good.
Alex: (New guy... Collin's roomate) Bought a bag and hit Toe stalls bs. Wants to keep playing.
Barry: (New guy) Bought a bag, then hit ATW bs, and tried to mimic everything Nadiah was hitting, like Dustpan and Pendulum, but failed
He's fucking addicted though, he's in it for the long haul for sure.
Mike: (New guy... Barry's room mate) Got toe stalls b2b.. not so sure about him if he'll be staying or not. Barry said he'd drag him to session
Marc: Hit Infinity b2b twice in one run, starting on each side. I was so stoked. He also hit a ton of good osis runs with some cool knee bumping stuff.
James: ILLUSION! First time. Looked so clean.
Khoa: Mainly played freestyle football. Sick to watch though.
Dylan: Hit a run with Pickup BSOS and Mirage BSOS. Then he tells me that he lives in Bethlehem when he's not in school... and apparently he lives within walking distance from Mike Toolan and Corey, so if they play a lot over xmas break, he is going to get so fucking good.
Nate: Just burped outside my door. He wasn't there though, because he had work
Nick
(ME!)
Highlights:
Fairy ss Mirage> Fairy ss Pickup rpt
A big run with Fairy toe shuffle! Definitely my toe shuffle record... like 12 contacts. Wanna get more next time.
Fairy ss Legover> Legover rpt.
A run with Pdx Drifter BSOS and Pdx DLO BSOS
BAP DRILL!!!! So stoked I finally hit this. The footage is upside down, because I figured I would get more ADDs that way

Been studying rat, snake, and pigeon anatomy for an exam on Monday. Then after a few hours I got sick of staring at the cut open carcasses of animals and recognizing where certain "stuff" is inside a gaping, bloody pit... So I drilled a little
Highlights:
Gyro Osis> Drifter rpt (6 contacts)
Swirl> Dyno rpt
This weird Fairy Gyro Toe thing, but not really a Fairy set, super low and weak fairy set, then turn and catch the bag on your other foot. I've seen Flash hit it midstring, usually from a toe trade. Anyway, I hit it b2b a few times, and then like 10 times in a row on strong side and like 5 on flipside.
Drilled some Dustpans
That's all. Back to studying.

MADD STUDIES!!!
...but to settle the nerves, I played footbag for a minute or two and hit some drills that I'm happy with..
Highlights:
Spinning Osis> Whirl rpt
Gyro Butterfly> Spinning Clipper rpt
Spinning Ducking Clipper> Drifter rpt
This Thursday (Oh fuck.. that's tomorrow...), Nate and I are going to be doing a demonstration at a coffee house with some juggles, Khoa (from Rain City Shred) will be doing freestyle football, and a hoola hooper, along with live music. Should be interesting, and fun!
Hopefully we'll have some footage from the show.

I hope Modified has a comeback soon. Never thought I'd say it, but this shit is beat. I only use it for my footblog now and to look at other people's blogs.
Anyway, in latest PSU news, some lady was riding her bike on a lonely bike path and was ambushed by a guy with a knife. He stabbed her in the neck and is still on the loose apparently. The lady got released from the hospital the other day and she is ok I think. But now everyone is afraid to leave their houses in that area. Hoping they catch him. Funny, but his description sounded like my old room mate..
But in happier, footbag news, Nate and I did the show last night with Khoa, two jugglers who we're now tight with, and a hoola hoop girl. The Jugglers were amazing. The hoola hoop girl was kinda bland and tried to hog the show sometimes. Khoa was insane and put on an amazing show. Some girl told him that if he put LEDs on his ball and did his thing at some raves, she could guarantee he would meet Skrillex in a year
I rofl'd my copter off when I heard that. Nate yo-yo'ed too, which was dope. Nate and my footbag parts were awesome. We hit a bunch of cool stuff for everyone.Nate's grand finale trick was Whirligig. My grand finale trick was Food Processor, and I must admit, it felt good to hit Food in front of a crowd of 25-30.
Video coming shortly.
Edit:
Oh yeah, I practiced before the show and hit a new PR.

Thanks Boats! Your shit is looking pretty FAWK YEAHHHHHH lately.
Dope session tonight! Kicked with Ivan, Ryan, Marc, Barry, and Mike. Apparently Mike lives 15 minutes away from me back home
We're gonna be kicking over the break I think. Ivan is getting back into the swing of things, returning from having a collapsed lung. Ryan is gaining super good consistency. Marc was hitting Gyro Clipper like crazy. Barry was hitting some ATWs and Orbits and alternating toe delays. Mike learned alternating toe delays really well.
Highlights:
Mobius> Blur BS!!! Fuckin' FUCK yeaahhhhhhhh
Blender> Motion> Blender fuck YEEEEE-ERRRRRHHHHHH (Challenge from Jackson)
Gyro Clipper x 23 FU-U-U-U-U-U-U-UCK YAHHHHHHH FUCK YEAH!
Drifter> Vortex rpt FAAAAAAAWK???? FAWK YEAHHHHHHHHHH
So then I was like, "FUCK YEAH."

Props on nearly doubling your gyro clipper record!
New challenge: any combination of drifter-vortex-pdx drifter that's a drill.

Thanks a bunch, guys
As for that drill, Ken.. I've got plenty of time
I don't wanna rush anything and keep getting injured.
I'm doing pretty ok with my leg business. They started to hurt after all that kicking I last posted about, so I took a break over winter vacation. I'm back at PSU and classes started today... footbag also started today. I'm taking it slow and steady, mainly focusing on ducks, dives, weaving, spins, gyros, and low impact weird stuff. I did hit new stuff today and a little bit last night:
Highlights:
My favorite highlight: Gyro Diving Osis> Spinning Ducking Osis rpt! My 2nd 5-5-5-5 link and my first Fearless drill! Super stoked on that. Before this week, I couldn't Gyro Dive to save my life, now it's easier for some reason, which I'm not complaining about
Hit a dope long run with BSOS Spinning Ducking Osis, BSOS Gyro Diving Osis, BSOS Spinning Ducking Clipper, BSOS Spinning Ducking Butterfly
Last night I hit Toe ss Motion> Gyro Double Pickup! I was all WOT TA FOCK???? Ivan saw it and said it was clean.
Some madd long runs with gyros, spins, zooms, spin ducks, gyro dives, axles and other hootinanners
In PSU footbag news, we held a competition over break to see who could improve the most. Whoever did improve the most wins a footbag (by Ivan or Nate) and 20 bucks. 2nd place gets a footbag (by Nate or Ivan). I'll update with who wins soon.
Also, Ivan made a player special of me! Pretty hyped on it.
