It's been a while since we've had a good club session. I hadn't played with Dan in probably well over a month. I considered skipping today since I've been playing so little lately, but Trevor and I went over a little late.
First and foremost I've been lucky to have some equipment upgrades as of late. For the last month or so I've had an all-amaretta bag made by Nathan Pipenberg, but I've been almost completely out of playing during that time (the sailing down from a post or two ago was its first real use). Just a few days ago I finally got in the mail another all-amaretta bag that Andrew Dunford had stitched for me. It was postmarked October 19 but took forever to get through the pipes. Dan was in his new pink Quantums, and the second pair he had bought was on the small side. The smaller white ones are damn near perfect for me once I have my insoles in. Score! Suddenly I have amazing bags and Quantums.
I approached today just wanting to mess around and have fun doing something new, and I thought just getting some frantic-set set trick would be a cool highlight. By the time I was warmed up I had decided that was a stupid idea, and asked Dan about a trick I only really discovered a few weeks ago. Today I tried dyno for the first time, and ended up spending the whole night messing around with my new favorite trick. Blender's going to be a tough one for me to learn whenever I embark on that journey, but I picked up dyno pretty much immediately.
I'm most pleased I can hit dyno both sides with equal ease -- much more than I can say about torque. Or pretty much any trick. After my initial "oh, I hit this move" phase I quickly moved on to links in and out of dyno including dyno > mixer and dyno > torque. After that I moved onto just getting dyno > down more consistently. I am most happy with getting dimwalk > dyno bsos:

Near the end of the session I felt comfortable enough to try something like open dyno. I hit it:

Then I figured shut ss dyno would be do-able:

As everyone was packing up I thought it'd be fun just to try atomic dyno. I hit it. That left just one more move... so I ended off the today with stepping far dyno (crispy torque screw). Unfortunately my camera had run out of storage space at this point so I can't post either of those two tricks. I definitely want atomic dyno on camera, and while I'm at it I may as well just hit torque screw for real.
This feels like one of my most successful sessions ever. I can't think of any kind of cool move I can hit on both sides, and from all of my main sets. I have a bunch of new 5-adds under my belt, but more importantly a good move I think I'll quickly be able to reliably use in strings. When I was putting my first few attempts on dyno Justin suggested maybe slowing it down a little bit, but by the end of the day agreed that if I can already hit some compound dyno moves maybe rolling with my downtime method is a good idea. I wonder if maybe this is one of the first defining factors I'll have in my style later on. I can't wait for Wednesday!

Props on the dyno facility, and all the new moves! Did you try consecutive dynos? That can be fun. Or doing stuff like dyno-osis-osis rpt is cool too.

Damn Reilley nice!
1st off quantums are good but don't let them give you shin splints! The sole of the quantums does not offer a ton of support... Of course you seem to have been taking it easy lately so hopefully they are gone now + it sounds like you got some nice insoles.
2nd those dyno's are awesome! I actually prefer the quick super downtime style of dynos you have going. Also it's good for combining it with other stuff. Dyno out of all those sets is awesome! I've neglected dyno and don't think I've ever really thought of doing it from toe, that will have to be something I work on next session.
If you want to try you could hit the same side dyno's next so...
pixie ss dyno (muted or unmuted)
fairy ss dyno (do it muted and you can be cool like Brian!)
tapping dyno (also called atomic ss dyno) <- this one is my favorite you could also call it crispy double dyno or crispy toe set motion
Which reminds me, those dyno's are so nice and fast I bet your motions are good/will be good when you hit them! It's great to see footage from you again!

Re: Reilley Adamson's footblog
Nice work with all the dynos - that's something I have just kind of ignored, so I should try and pick that up - I just read a post of yours about going to Barranquilla - you should definitely do that. It sounds like you are working like crazy now, so you should be able to build up some money.
I am heading to Barranquilla tomorrow and hopefully again for that jam, though I will have to see about my financial situation then. The guys in Colombia are really cool and there are a few different cities with scenes, there are also players in Venezuela.
You would also be quite welcome to come to Chile. Hopefully a few people come down (maybe not for a month, but for a week or so). Apparently the carnavale will also be on there at that time.

I didn't get a chance to blog about my session last Wednesday.
Justin, Trevor and I kicked at the community center near Justin's house because old people were clogging the cabana. The floor was really slippery so it was hard to do much of anything. Dampening our soles helped, but I still felt handicapped.
I mostly worked on dyno proficiency. The worst thing about being one-sided is that to avoid getting completely defeated I tend to keep practicing my good side. I will probably stick with working dyno for a while because I am almost equally proficient on both sides. I was still a little sore from the previous session so I actually couldn't repeat atomic dyno for posterity. I didn't put many attempts on everyone's dyno challenges due to the precarious playing surface, but I think I did hit the open ss dyno Dustin suggested.
Whirl is a trick I've really avoided because the dex doesn't come very naturally to me, and the last thing I need at this poitn is to spread myself more thin with a trick I can only hit once out of every few tries. I always knew reverse whirls/whips would be easier for me, and today I finally started seriously trying them out. Dyno was a perfect lead in to whip. I hit it bsos without too much issue and got through a couple simple drills, but I'm not nearly as bothsided on this as I am with dyno. My left leg doesn't quite have the confidence to dex quickly in the correct motion, but I enjoy trying the trick itself so I have natural incentive to improve it. I hit far whip once or twice (ending on my weak side). When I really focused on my set height/position and waited for the right moment to dex the trick is money just about every time on my good side.
I will either be (mostly) unemployed or settling in to an easy job for a while longer after this week. I signed on to work Saturdays leading up to Christmas at my old job because they need help, and working six days a week after nearly a full month of working lots of overtime has completely killed my desire to go anywhere or do anything during my free time. If I don't get hired on full time I'm strongly considering taking out a loan (something I've been deathly afraid of all my life because it seems like all of my close family members have struggled with climbing out of debt) to continue school.
In any case I want to just get back to playing more footbag. Playing once a week (or less) feels like a waste of time -- it's hardly enough to keep from losing ground on the treadmill.

Wednesday session with Trevor and Justin.
I've had a really hard time making myself post in here after sessions lately. I want to stay consistent with documenting every single session (as I've done since I started this footblog last spring), but I think having a routine like this keeps me motivated. I've been so busy it's been hard to stay committed to footbag, and I don't want to quit!
My strong side open sets are getting to the point where I can duck them. However my inability to consistently do any move other than dimwalk leaves me with something of a bottleneck. I still haven't hit smear > open legover, rpt and several other drills I can think of off the top of my head. My weak side open is good enough to consistently start strings with dimwalk, but the above problem is even more exaggerated. I also have a major problem with endurance... I lose my open ducking sets pretty quickly due to fatigue.
I didn't really hit anything worthy of posting, but happily my dynos are still pretty both-sided. I am discovering there might be one or two things I can't do as well on my flip (far symple dyno starting and ending on flip clipper), but I think that has more to do with my poor flip clipper sets than it does with any weakness in the dex itself. I am mostly just trying to get my dexes tighter and the ending clipper position flatter.

Apparently eating three enchiladas right before kicking doesn't have too much of an adverse effect on my game. I don't know if I should be impressed by my stalwart digestive system or disappointed in the fact I'm so mediocre at footbag that things like stretching and eating don't really do anything to help or hamper me.
Far symple dyno on my strong side is getting fairly consistent. I challenged myself to use it mid-string for most of the day, and Justin eventually called out a challenge of dimwalk > far symple dyno > torque:

After hitting it a couple times without too much difficulty I tried replacing dimwalk with phoenix, but it wasn't happening. I am still excited by the prospect of my open ducking -- it's getting visibly better each session on my strong side. It's still very obvious I am not using as much finesse for the motion though. I've hit phoenix on film recently several times, but it's obvious that I'm sort of just throwing it up and hoping I catch it each time. Justin's in comparison look so controlled.
I never really do open clippers. A day or two ago I thought a good drill for me might be open op clipper > mixer, rpt. It's a pretty fun one to do, and I think it'll really help improve my flip open set more than easy dimwalks. I've also been meaning to practice getting open sets out of mixers... it's not as hard as I had anticipated.
I did a little bit of rake work. I think I got rake > dimwalk both sides.
Justin's headed down to Portland on Friday to kick with Nate Linscott and Nick Landes. I think I'll be able to tag along!

Holy shit man you have improved! I am very impressed. What shoes are you wearing it your last video? The white ones. They look awesome.

December 28, 2012
What a fun day. Today was the fairly spontaneous trip south to kick with Nate Linscott in Vancouver. Justin Dale drove, and Justin Stephens came along too. Best of all the universe conspired so that Nick Landes and Gordon Bevier were both in the Portland area and were free on a Friday afternoon. It was like seeing a small 2012 U.S. Open reunion party.
We arrived at about 2:30 p.m. We briefly hung out at Nate's place and then went to the gym. While Justin Dale and Nate did a pre-shred workout Justin Stephens and I warmed up and stretched. I mentally noted how in my last entry I mentioned I don't really see much difference in my ability if I stretch, and made a conscious effort to contradict that. I spent a good half hour going through several different stretches, taking a break to just do some kicks, stretch some more, and so on. By my third round through my stretches I felt noticeably more labile, but I'm not sure it helped me play.
The gym floor was pretty slick so everyone felt a little handicapped. Nick hadn't played in a couple months, but kicked with us newbies for the first half of the day. I told him about Jeremy O'Wheel's record page, and Nick cranked out 51 drifters -- sealed with a hand catch -- first try (I have to remember to get the footage from Nate). He wasn't doing crazy nuclear stuff like 69 or nuclear torque today, but still busted out some cool downtime sidewalk silliness at the drop of a hat:

My flip open sets unlocked today. For some reason trying flip open op pickup felt great, and near the end of the day I was suddenly reliably getting at least a few consecutive open legovers no problem... even midstring.

Pointing my toe inward just a little bit did wonders for getting my flip side sets to clear basically every time with some amount of accuracy. Hopefully this means I can start throwing those open legovers midstring with a little more confidence. Pickups (from toe) are something I haven't been as good at as legovers since I started playing for real a couple summers ago, but doing open op pickups seems like a good way to bypass what might just be a mental block.
I'm still working out shin splint problems... they aren't totally crippling, but they are still making footbag quite uncomfortable if I play more than twice a week. I think I'm much lighter on my feet while doing toe stuff so I can at least get by working on that come Sunday.
Nothing else spectacular from me. I still have a good chunk of footage to go through. Nate was unfortunately out of frame for most of the time I was filming their circle, but Bevier completely killed it today. It's baffling how he was even doing whatever he was doing on a floor that felt like an ice rink!
Mike, it's cool to see you active on here (and posting in my thread)! I just got my hands of a pair of Quantums. Dan Reed ordered a couple pairs, and one ended up being a little small. They're a little big for me, but they are also really light. I might go back to Lavers, but for now I feel like part of a special group within footbag...

Re: Reilley Adamson's footblog
wow, some great sessions Reilley. Keep it up! Glad you found a pair of Quantums. Light on your feet is the way to go.
I find if I'm playing once a week or less I can't build up muscle but I can ingrain stuff into my muscle memory. Even when I've taken 6 months off my muscle memory is still there and stuff like ripwalks, pdx whirls, and anything non muscly really works fine. So take heart!
Spinning sidewalk is so sweet. I'll have to try that downtime sidewalk next time I play. I've tried it before and failed horribly but seeing nick do it I get a better feel on it.
Great work on the flip pixies. I'll have to try the toe inward tip. I somehow still haven't gotten this trick

Another late write-up. More and more I want to just nix the text and post videos! I haven't been doing my job of sending out session info emails to the club or anything either for months. There just seems like a lot of obligatory writing for how I've been going about things. It's a healthy habit, and also nice to look back, but lately a little demotivating to footbag itself.
First session of the year, and it was a pretty good one. I shifted my focus away from working on dyno a little bit, and really only only used them in string if I got through a drill. I did try hitting atomic dyno as I have pretty much every session lately, but I still haven't yet been able to repeat getting it like I did on my first day of dyno work. I did, however, hit:

Open sets are still getting better and better. My flip side made a pretty big leap in Portland a week or two ago, and as a result I hit a drill I should have had months ago:

Getting dimwalk bsos in the same string was a nice bonus, but my osis form is still something I desperately want to fix (or replace entirely with dyno). I am not quite ready to start strings with something like smog all the time, but my strong side "recovery" between the set itself and following downtime component is getting quicker and quicker each session. My illusions (at least strong side) have gotten better over the last month or two, and trying to hit smudge cleanly has been a good project. I hit several during this session, but they all looked like this:

Shitty. I don't think I've hit a clean one yet.
I've also wanted shut ss legover > open ss pickup for some time:

Still looks pretty janky, but hopefully that'll clean up soon.
Should be playing Wednesday! If not... this Sunday.

Why are you such a boss? Torquescrew looked sick, didn't really know it till now. I would really like to see more runs from ya. That Smear >PLO repeat with the Dimwalk BSOS was super dope, also dug your ss Switch and ss Pick-up shizz, it was cool the way you mirrored the set with the downtime pretty much. Dude, become a Shut expert and then teach me your ways
. You should make a more full length video, I know I'd watch the shit out of it.

This post is pretty late but I wanted to get it done because I can't sleep.
I finally hit some clean smudges. My strong side open ducking is getting there... I didn't hit phoenix, but I cleared lots and lots of the ducks and just kept missing the down component each time. So that says a lot about my strength.
I've finally started working on my flip side shut sets. I don't think I hit one flip shut trick. I have a ways to go in this regard. I will probably get shut ss mirage bsos whenever I play next.
I don't really remember anything else.
On Thursday morning around 1:30 a.m. I was on the computer just killing time and eating a bowl of cereal. By 2:00 a.m. I was violently ill. Within about an hour I had thrown up everything I had eaten over the last day. These vomiting episodes continued on every half hour for several more hours (at which point I was dry heaving and throwing up bile). After each time I felt flushed and light-headed. I started getting diarrhea doing each episode, and knew I had to do something when I didn't make either form of waste into the proper receptacles. I called my mom in a panic, and I ended up going to the emergency room at a local hospital.
They hooked me up to an IV and put about three liters of fluid into me over the first few hours... but I was still feeling deathly dehydrated. It took about five liters until I could even start peeing. They eventually admitted me into the hospital. Once I got on anti-nausea medicine I at least wasn't prone to throwing up.
I had never had to go to the hospital before, so the whole thing was a little traumatic for me. Most of the staff were really good to me, but being alone in a cold, sterilized environment surrounded primarily by machines during my most vulnerable time was fucking awful. I ended up staying overnight on Thursday. I had to get up about every half hour to rush to the bathroom, and those are just the times I made it. I probably went through like five pairs of hospital pajama pants and several more sets of bed sheets. It was the worst, most humiliating feeling.
I got on anti-diarrhea medicine too, which at least prevented me from having any more accidents. Various extremities got pretty swollen from having such an abundance of fluid pumped into me.
The doctor discharged me from the hospital on Friday evening. I wasn't throwing up, I had started peeing at least semi-regularly, and I wasn't having accidents. I was a little worried about going home (where I'm primarily alone), but it was relieving to get out of there. I haven't really had any appetite since this whole thing began, but my mom kindly got some groceries that sounded a little more appealing than what I had at home already. She even cleaned my home bathroom while I was in the hospital. I plan to drink lots of kefir.
I got home and went to sleep after getting settled in. But this feels far from over. My eyes are still nearly swollen shut. I've also started peeing at a worrying rate -- I am only awake writing this now because I've gotten up once every hour over the course of the night to urinate. I don't want to lose all of the fluids they had to pump into me. I'm sure my body wants food, but thought of eating anything makes my stomach churn.
I'm really achy from being so sedentary. It hurts to take a deep breath. I still have the shakes.
I'm getting over bacterial gastroenteritis... also known as he stomach flu. I had a pretty severe case. I've been cleared to resume my previous diet and exercise regimen, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to kick again.
The medical staff told me the illness is potentially fatal. I'm loathe to think how much worse this could have been had I resisted the initial call to my mom for longer. The hospital I stayed at is nonprofit so after filling out the financial aid paperwork I should be mostly off the hook financially. I still can't help but lament about the state of healthcare in this country. How many uninsured people have severely worsened their medical woes because they are afraid of a condemning medical bill?

Shit man, hope things get better for ya. Have you considered doing an enema? I know it's kind of awkward, but it'll hydrate you like no other.

Finally back! Everyone went to Justin's house for the Superbowl including several of the local footballer freestylers. Scott Behmer even showed up, who hasn't really been playing for months and months. Chris Dean happened to be visiting family outside of Seattle, and he also dropped by to shred and watch some of the game. Dan Reed just moved into a new place close to Justin's house and expects to make it to weekday sessions now.
I had a pretty good session considering how rusty I was. Last week during my absence Justin challenged Trevor to hit all of the basic open moves on both sides. All of the open legovers, pickups, mirages, clippers, downs, and osis. Illusions were really the only thing left out because us new players have not worked on it a great deal.
This week he challenged all of us to do the same with stepping (sans illusion). It was a really good exercise. I haven't worked on stepping hardcore in probably over a year because of how much concentrated doses usually impact my shins so my stepping sets are pretty hit-or-miss at this point. It's weird to think that earlier in my fledgling career hitting blur bsos was just a regular thing I did because I hadn't focused on other concepts yet.
For a lot of the challenge I kept up with Dan pretty well, but a few things proved pretty challenging -- my flip stepping ss mirage took a while, as did flip stepping op pickup. I actually got stepping ss illusion before those two. I want to play Wednesday and get through everything faster, but we'll see how I feel.
I worked on open stuff some more. I had a couple promising starts utilizing both sides pretty equally, but never really got into double digit contacts. Got phoenix, and spent a little while longer trying to hit dyno out of it.
I finally got atomic dyno on film, but this one doesn't look nearly as good as the first one:

By the end of the session I was feeling pretty spent from having done so much stepping so I decided to start messing around trying to hit one of my favorite concepts of all time. Got it here:

No shin splints from today! Next session should be fun.

Dan, Justin, and I had a pretty long session. It felt really good. In general I'm kind of hovering around the same skill level on most things, and hitting new tricks here and there. I need to play more than once a week.
We started off by doing the stepping challenge again. Dan and I got through it much faster than normal this time. It took us both about seven rounds to get through 24 different stepping tricks.
I started working on my flip side tricks a bunch. I spent a good chunk of the session trying to get through dimwalk > mixer > open legover, rpt, and always started on my flip side. I want to get the ball rolling on my flip torque. My right foot is way behind my left in pretty much every way, and I've been thinking that practicing tons of double dexes with it would be the quickest remedy. I've been thinking about my flip double around the world for a while, and figured attempting this new trick would be a good way to get my right leg some double dexing practice:

It took me a few rounds to hit my first one, but I spent several more to get that one because I want to make sure that I'm getting them really clean. I still wasn't happy with it -- it didn't land on my toe where I wanted it. Oh well. It's a good start.
I've been thinking lately about how high the skill level is for our sport, and at the risk of offending any old school players who happen to see this I think I have to admit I'm glad that it's the case. I would hesitate to show someone not already invested in footbag any footage from as late as even the mid-2000's. Everything has gotten so much more polished since then. We have relatively easy access to quality filming/editing equipment. Player form must be mechanically efficient to be competitive. Players must have some level of fitness. And I am thankful that some players have put a little effort into wearing decent looking shirt/shorts combos when competing -- Honza always looks pretty good when he's playing. This was mostly not the case less than a decade ago, and the last thing I want to try to impress a layman with is grainy, handheld jam footage of a bunch of unfit white guys awkwardly doing tricks while they look like they're falling over. This is exactly why I don't have much interest in filming runs of myself until I gain some muscle mass (hopefully that'll naturally make my shirt/shorts look like they fit better) and have the attention to form that Sam Potter did. It just doesn't look good. If I'm not making it look easy I'm not doing it right. So long as my clippers look so obviously off balance I would rather keep the majority of my footage within the hermetically sealed discourse of the footbag world.
To that end I met with my personal trainer/nutritionist friend yesterday before kicking in regards to getting in shape for footbag. My living situation is likely going to change shortly, and as it happens my friend goes to the gym right by where I'll probably be staying.

Re: Reilley Adamson's footblog
February 17, 2013
I went into today determined to put some work in on my right leg, which basically is inferior to my left leg in every regard relevant to footbag. Because we played at the gym today Justin led us in some weight lifting exercises between rounds.
I did the stepping challenge again. I didn't get through all of the moves faster than normal but my flip side is feeling stronger again. My stepping still isn't where it was a couple summers ago, but it's getting better. I am familiar enough with going through this challenge that I just go through by trick and do them in order rather than cherry picking what seems easy in a given round.
I also decided to go through all of the open moves and do them. I think today must have been the first time I actually hit my flip side open ss legover... because I was unpleasantly surprised when I found out how difficult it was for me. My flip side sets in general felt worse than they have been lately. I put tons of flip open work in today because of this... maybe if I play again before next weekend I'll retain some of the work I put in today. I did hit smog pretty easily, and rightward after pulled open ss mixer out of my ass on I believe the first try.
I had a lot of trouble with overdexing my pickups with my right leg. Both my stepping and open pickups that involved a right leg catch took longer than they should have, and it was almost always because I straight up whiffed the pickup catch. It was annoying, but at least I know I have speed. I guess.
I did a few sets of consecutive flip clippers, and even though I always got well into double digit contacts they felt like shit. They just never begin to feel natural. I can't even tell if they're symmetrical to my good side (which to some degree I can control, but still don't plant in a way that gives me good balance) or not. I put in a few flip torque attempts afterward, but I wasn't really feeling it.
After I hit open ss mixer pretty easily I had an idea, and almost hit shut ss mixer first try. I ended up spending the end of my session on this, but despite footing it many times couldn't seal it. This will be an easy new triple dex next session. It's also a fun way to practice my poor flip mixer. Flip smog is not quite there, but I can see myself hitting it bsos soon.

Re: Reilley Adamson's footblog
That barrage looked great! I find it's cleanest if the first dex is done like a whirl and the second is done like a mirage, which looks like what you did in that video clip. To clean it I would also try ss double pickup hit exactly like a barrage but do a pickup instead of a mirage at the end. That's Brian's advice and in addition to helping clean barrage it's a great trick in it's own right.
Also way to go at open ss mixer. I've never hit that either side

Re: Reilley Adamson's footblog
I have the same problem with flip open sets. Flip magellan is like the hardest trick for me. I agree, too, the barrage looks really good. I can't do those clean for the life of me unless I start the first dex like stepping. I can't do them downtime without the-ing.
