Quick post. I've put off reporting in on my Wednesday session because I'm lazy, but would like this typed up before I play tonight. I did a total of 50 squats with Justin between rounds. I'm getting better at them.

Went through the stepping challenge. I can now generally get through one concept (all of the legover tricks and so on) in a round. I'm still doing downs, clippers, legovers, pickups, mirages, and leaving out illusions. I got through pickups especially quickly today, and almost got stepping ss mirage bsos.

Footed the final catch of dimwalk > blur, rpt. I can't wait to get this.

Hit this as I predicted previously:

Feels great to have the footbag bug in full swing. I have to update Jeremy O'Wheel's record list soon. Our U.S. Open date was rejected by the facility so we have to find another venue or seriously reconsider the date. I want so bad to host a professional looking tournament in a proper locale. Seeing Worlds footage in a gym just makes it seem so much more legitimate. We'll see.

I'm really liking having some structure in my sessions. I might just plan on doing the stepping and open games each session along with 25 strong side and 50 flip side contacts of every basic tiltless trick until I'm so good at all of these that I have time to spare. I'm going to start wearing my Quantums during the day and practicing swirl here and there.

In about two weeks this footblog will be year old. I'm going to create my challenge thread on the one year anniversary.

We didn't end up kicking Friday, but today made up for it. As I try for denser shred the sessions get more and more brutal. Justin also had me do a few different exercises throughout the day between rounds.

I've been fighting a cold for several days so I didn't feel like I was playing particularly well, but in retrospect I can tell I'm already getting better from playing more. The stepping challenge really frustrated me today. I got stuck on my flip stepping ss pickup for several rounds. As Dan and I keep doing this each session we're going to gradually make it harder -- today we had to hit both variations of stepping legover bsos for them to count (ripwalks and clippers should already be on that list but we only thought to do it near the end). For some of the stepping tricks ending on a toe we will begin requiring open tricks out of them.

Some of my open sets were jut not clearing, but overall I had a pretty good day. I hit phoenix a bunch of times because both Scott and Dan were doing them, and almost got torque screw out of it a couple times. That will probably be my first fearless link, but I don't know when I will hardcore try to seal it. I felt guilty about doing string open ducking a lot so I tried it on my flip... I was pleasantly surprised by the fact it wasn't totally awful. I got a few successful flip open ducking sets but no seal. Doing lots of open work really made my ass muscles sore a month ago, but I think I am totally used to the motion now.

When no one was looking I spent a few seconds in the corner just trying a few tiltless moves I knew were weak. I can hit phoenix about as often as I can hit my weak ss mirage. In fact I can probably hit open ss mirage more than its basic counterpart at this point. Abysmal. Another thing I did off to the side was a few nuclear sets. Pretty much all of them cleared!

I worked on swirl a little bit. It's harder to get used to positioning the clipper foot more behind me as Justin and Dan both suggested. I did hit my best flip swirl ever though. I think I got two in a row on my strong side.

I spent at least the last half hour of our three hour session practicing dimwalk > blur, rpt. I footed the last blur a couple times, but it still feels really awesome to be on the cusp of this drill. Months and months ago Chris Dean mentioned it as really helpful.

My leg muscles are understandably sore, and it feels great. I did have some shin splint pain though. I plan on kicking Wednesday.

Great session. I am getting visibly better at footbag under my current training regimen.

Because of the extra exercise Justin is having us all do my muscles are always sore enough to compell me to stretch throughout the day. I didn't warm up a whole lot for this session because I had been doing it off and on for hours previous. Today we all had to complete 50 squat jumps and 50 burpees within the session.

To increase the difficulty of the stepping challenge I made myself hit ripwalks, sidewalks, both near and far clippers, and legovers (I should start calling them switches again) bsos. I actually hit every form of stepping legover in one string, and surprised myself by nailing stepping near pickup bsos (which is usually the hardest move for me).

I hit phoenix three times in a row today. I noticed that I can now hit parkwalk on my strong side about as easily as I hit dimwalk. Just a few weeks ago even my strong side parkwalk was still risky, and now I can hit it bsos in a try or two. My flip side still has a little trouble with having to set accurately, but it's getting better.

In lieu of all of my recent stepping work I haven't really been working on dyno as much. After having completed my stepping challenge (as well as the workout Justin had given us) I decided it would be something easy my fatigued legs could handle. I hit dyno > dyno for the first time as well as stepping near dyno:

My atomic muscles weren't really cooperating. Despite playing for over two hours I can't think of anything else I really did... maybe I'm just doing a better job of training things thoroughly.

We are collectively aiming on three club sessions a week. Dan and I are currently working on how to divide them to train different things (drill days, new concept/big move days, and endurance days for example). I need flip side tiltless days for sure.

Justin, Dan, and I went to the gym right by Justin's house to shred there and see if the facility would work for one of the U.S. Open days -- the people Justin correpsonded with there were really excited about the prospect of putting it on. A facility that actually wants anything to do with us is a blessing. We preceded our shred with an arm workout (primarily pull movements). I can't bench or lift for shit, but I can do pull ups because I have no body mass. I know it was a great workout because I can't fully straighten out my arms today.

Unfortunately the multipurpose room was on the slippery side. Unless we can have some equipment moved around in the main gym we'll probably have to nix this idea. For the first twenty minutes or so we ruled out the floor as a tournament possibility, and then debated between staying or shredding at Justin's place. We ended up staying and having a great session.

Because of the poor surface I did lots of easy tiltless stuff to warm up and get used to sliding around. I've really been needing to put some attempts into my consecutive flip mirages. I don't think I broke 10.

I spent a lot of time doing flip open drills. Flip parkwalk is a great one for me to practice beacuse I both have to set in the correct place and get my setting foot down quickly -- two things I still have problems with. After many rounds I finally got through parkwalk > mixer, rpt. I almost got through dimwalk > far mixer, rpt after a couple rounds, but moved on to something else before finishing. My flip mixer is officially the bottleneck on a lot of these drills. Time to drill it.

I started the stepping challenge after already exhausting myself, but I still seem to get through it in about the same amount of rounds each week. It's like I can do the same amount of work with less energy at my disposal. I haven't had a completely fresh session in a couple weeks... but I'm not taking any time off to heal. Playing so hard and so often is clearly making a difference. My "good" stepping is falling behind what I thought was my flip side (just as it did a year and a half ago when I was just getting into stepping). It's really weird, and I can only think that having my stronger leg doing the stepping dex on my flip side gives it an advantage.

My main goal of the day was hitting my flip double around the world for the first time. I've been acutely aware that my both sides of around the world are not symmetrical for a while. I knew part of it was a balance issue on my flip side (from not doing it enough), but I also realized how important it was that I do a better job spotting the bag in the inside of my knee. After I really focused on that I was able to get through around the world > op toe, rpt pretty well. I think I got around 15 on each side during my best run of it. These look so shitty that it's impossible to tell which is my flip side... but I'm still proud of it:

If I remember I'm making a challenge thread tomorrow. I can't wait to kick Wednesday, and I'm going to Portland this weekend.

Very late post. I've had a real rollercoaster of a week.

Kind of a rough session, but I got some work done. I warmed up pretty quickly and went straight into the stepping challenge. I initially tried to do everything bsos, but I eventually got burned out and decided to just finish it without any special conditions.

When I was just improvising things to practice I tilted more than I usually do. My density has come at the cost of my average contacts lately, and I think the latter could use some work again.

My biggest breakthrough came at the end of the day after I had exhausted myself. I received flip phoenix as an idea, and spent many rounds trying to clear open ducking sets. I eventually started footing it, and after a good half hour total I nailed it. I think my open sets in general have improved most from attempts on parkwalk and phoenix.

March 9, 2013

Got to shred with Nick Landes and Chris Dean during a weekend business trip to Portland. We ended up kicking in a small conrete courtyard at my hotel in the evening. The setting sun created a problem for a while, but the light fixtures became more effective as other peripheral light faded.

I played pretty bad. I had a lot of non-footbag stuff going on that weekend, and as cool as it was to get to kick with them I was mostly just going through the motions when it was my turn. I couldn't hardly even clear any shut/atomic sets.

The only noteworthy thing I did was foot the final contact of dimwalk > mixer > open legover, rpt once. Nick hit some cool stuff like nuclear torque bsos. Chris had some good shuffle going once he warmed up.

While in Portland I had the chance to pick up some banners for the U.S. Open from Chris Dean. Thanks!

Our usual shred area at Justin's was taken over so we walked a block or so to our backup spot at the community center. It was taken as well. We ended up shredding in a weird little carpeted rec room back at Justin's condo complex.

No one kicked particularly well, but I still feel like I'm always doing good work when I play. I am finding it hard to motivate myself to get through the stepping challenge some days. It's a lot easier than it was a couple weeks ago, but I don't feel like I'm going to be able to realistically put stepping stuff into my shred reliably for a while yet. I did some practice stepping out of osis. I managed to hit stepping far osis > stepping far osis > ripwalk on one side, but no attempts even came close on my flip.

I hit phoenix and sealed with a hand catch five times in a row to end the day. I should have done more flip side practice... parkwalk and phoenix always help a lot.

You guys are going to be in great form by the time US Open rolls around. I'm getting so excited for it even though it's far away!

You should try some other pixie moves ducking. alpine parkwalk, smear, and pixie legover are all very cool. Also, I love stepping far osis > torque (or even harder torque > stepping far osis). If that's too hard then try some stepping near osis, it's a cool trick you don't see very often at all!

March 20, 2013

Another really late post. I have had almost no desire to post in here lately because I feel like I'm pretty much just regurgitating a couple paragraphs the same highlights and desired improvements every time. I'm sick of writing about footbag! Whenever I look at other blogs and see big gaps I get disappointed, and I really want to stay in the habit of documenting every session in detail so I can look back later... it's just boring. And I think if I start skipping days I'll just stop the blog entirely for a while. Choices.

My stepping is decent again, but I don't think it's going to improve much unless I get physically stronger (seriously I know I've said this probably several times over throughout this blog). It just takes too much energy. I therefore haven't been terribly motivated to run through the stepping challenge with Dan as thoroughly as I would a few weeks ago. Justin thinks box jumps will help with my strength. I want to be able to hit symposium moves easily.

My flip open on the other hand is getting a lot stronger. Putting so many attempts on flip phoenix really paid off. I still have trouble with my accuracy so I should go back to smears and parkwalks for a while.

I spent the end of the day doing a couple rounds of consecutive down and consecutive osis for my challenge thread. I definitely didn't even break 10 of either. How far I've fallen...

March 23, 2013

My friend Joe has kicked with us a few times over the last week or two. It was super nice (for March in Seattle) yesterday, and the two of us met up at Green Lake to get some food and just kill time. I don't have any shred gear other than a bag itself, but we started circle kicking, and eventually I was just seeing what all I could do in pants and Sambas (which have a terrible inside surface). I got as far as dimwalk > mixer > down > mixer > osis > osis > far mirage once. While explaining how paradox works I think I may have improved my far mixer form a little bit. I almost hit far drifter first try... I haven't done any of those in probably a year. It'll be interest to try them out during the next real session.

Went to lunch with my mom and then off to shred with a stomach full of pancakes, eggs, and bacon. I got to Justin's about an hour after him and Scott started so I geared up for a short and sweet session. I still had a pretty good day... maybe feeling like I'm going to throw up is good for my footbag playing.

I took another break from the stepping challenge. I practiced stepping out of osis a little bit, but otherwise left it alone. I noticed after briefly warming up that my shins were a little tender from trying to play in street clothes on concrete the day before. Toe game doesn't seem to impact me so much as clipper stuff, so I started most everything with some flip open trick.

Justin suggested doing the ducking challenge, but I wasn't really into it after having trouble with just doing ducking clippers. It's just another one of those things that I've only worked on during a short period so I've slid back to almost nothing. Justin is convinced ducking will be easier for me to improve than stepping and other concepts I've spent more time on.

I was hitting but near and far drifters pretty well today, but I still need to improve my balance after making the catches. Forgot to incorporate smoke. Forgot to try far mixers, but my flip near mixers were feeling more symmetrical to my good side that they usually do. I footed dimwalk > mixer > open legover, rpt again... I can't believe I haven't even been able to seal this once. That changes next session.

Warren and Justin Blotsky traveled from Bellingham (a couple hours away) to join us.

Went through the stepping challenge. Everyone else kind of joined me, but got a little sidetracked a short ways in. Dan's unfortunate calf injury (he's taking a couple weeks off) effectively lowered our collective focus!

Not a lot else stands out. I worked on drifter some. My apparent breakthrough on far drifter was totally gone today -- I don't think I hit a single one. Each attempt on far drifter, however, makes my hips feel great, and I can feel the practice rotating them will help with my flexibility in other tricks too. Basically I think its the best trick in my collection for getting better at paradox stuff in general.

I hit gyro dyno at the end of the day. I thought I was filming, but I wasn't. I haven't worked on any form of spinning in a while, and have really never practiced gyro at all. It would be cool to hit mobius sometime.

Spring is here. Sunday is supposed to be in the mid- to high-60's so we're planning on Green Lake for our first outside session of the season.

Happy Easter! Today was our first legit outside session of the year. It was/is beautiful outside today. We played at Green Lake -- which probably comes in second as our collective favorite spot after Alki Beach. Chris Dean happened to be in the area up from Portland.

I actually had a pretty good session. I didn't initially warm up at all, but after Justin teased me about it I did consecutive downs for a couple rounds. I think even doing that helped my form for the rest of the session quite a bit.

A guy in slacks and dress shoes approached us and ended up kicking for a while. He had his basics down pretty well, and seemed interested in playing with us. He stuck around for a good hour or so. Before he left he asked if he could film me doing some tricks so he could practice at home. Usually Justin takes the lead on this sort of thing, but he was sitting out (his girlfriend Kelly had stopped by with her hilarious, awesome dog). I managed to put together a little presentation of toe stalls, around the worlds, orbits, switches, pickups, and clippers. I explained proper form, how consecutive moves are a great way to quantify progress, and that sealing with a hand catch instead of saving it with out of control kicks makes for more efficient practice. At the end he asked me to "do the one where it goes around your neck and under the leg," and I hit phoenix several times in a row. I did my whole presentation without a single drop, and I even felt my words were pretty concise despite being improvised. It felt really awesome... I'll have to see if I can get a copy of that video. Anyway we made sure to give him a business card. I can totally see that guy kicking with us in the future.

I hit the dimwalk > mixer > open legover, rpt drill I'd been working on for a while. I hit it a few times! I also tilted quite a bit today which pushed up my average contacts. Flip mixers felt better than usual.

I footed phoenix > torque screw again.

I usually try to throw in far symple dyno at least a few times a session. I did a couple near the end of our session today. Justin commented that if I can do that I'm honestly ready to try another particular move infamous for injuring players. I hit the said move in question several times (one time clean), but my camera had died already. I will hit this notorious move on film next session and not injure myself in the process. Oh yeah, I've never done a far whirl.

Hey i have followed your blog for awhile now real nice progress. If you can get phoenix > torquescrew somewhat consistently id say thats a good 2/3 parts for a good sick 3 at US open. Im gona guess your mystery move is Stepping Far dyno (G.y.b.a.s) looking forward to the vid.

I kept telling myself I should squeeze in a solo practice session before today, but didn't get around to it. At least I felt pretty fresh.

I made sure to spend more time than normal warming up with basics, and again I'm pretty sure it helped quite a bit with my general proficiency. I'm not going to write too much, but basically I was hitting moves I don't necessarily drill every single day on a whim without too much trouble. I had some decent strings here and there:

I also tried a few new drills that I didn't expect to get close to finishing. I've never really used drifter in a drill so almost getting through this on one of my very first tries felt good:

I still want that last move. Maybe next session I'll put more time into it.

Last week I finally hit dimwalk > mixer > open legover, rpt. Now I'm trying to put parkwalk > osis > far mirage, rpt in front of it for a 12 contact string opener. I got a little frustrated with how bad I was trying to get through this, but I could feel how effective the practice was.

Since I posted my own challenge thread a month ago I've not really posted in there because I haven't really gotten any of the challenges. But I did finally suck it up and go for consecutive osis. I think I got nearly 20 on my first try (albeit awful ones)... unfortunately I accidentally deleted the video or something. I might try to get a solo session in tomorrow to work on challenge stuff.

Antonio, thanks for reading my blog! It always makes me feel good to know people follow along. So I've actually hit stepping far dyno before (hell of a lot easier than torque screw, that's for sure). I didn't get to hit the mystery move last session because of the power going out, but I'm going to try again Sunday...

20 osis is pretty good. Incorporating consec osis into your warmup is also good. It's low impact, it's good clipper practice, and it helps drill in one of the more annoyingly hard "basic" tricks you'll need.

Session at the gym with Scott, Justin, and some of our football freestyle friends.

We did an arm workout before. All pushes. I was pretty surprised how much of an effect sore arms had on my playing. I felt out of it the whole time, but still managed to hit a few things.

I decided beforehand I'd just spend most of my day on drilling parkwalk > osis > far mirage, rpt. I hit it several times throughout the day. My plan was to try an link my dimwalk > mixer > open legover, rpt combo on at the end for 12 of my best contacts ever, but I never got past more than a couple:

I also spent a bunch of time going for flip open ducking. I guess today was a bit of a milestone for me -- I got my first 5-add bsos in the form of phoenix (sorry for the blurry camera):

Looks pretty stupid though. I've been working hard on making my strong side phoenix to look more effortless, but mid-string it clearly looks terrible. I tried afterward to hit phoenix > mixer > open legover, rpt... I got the three move combo both sides, nut not without lots of drops in between.

I think that's about it. Just lots of open practice.
