Very cool! I'm looking forward to this already. Dominion RiverRock kicked lots of butt last year, and I'll definitely be back for it this year too. The playing areas were cool, the music was cool, the crowds were cool. Maybe this year I'll take just a little extra time to see some more of Richmond too.

Hey guys, I'm new to the footbag scene and never been to dominionriverrock, do a lot of footbaggers attend? It doesnt seem like they have organized footbag events, but is there space to play?

Hey footbagg,

Dominion RiverRock is not really a footbag event, per se. Dominion RiverRock is, I think, described as an "Outdoor Life" festival, or something like that. Really, its a big mix of various sporting events like some kayak races and some foot races (running, plus, I think, like an obstacle course too, like a "tough-mudder" race) and a rock-climbing contest, etc. There's also a bunch of live music. Some of the smaller acts play during the day-time while the races and contests are happening, and, it seems like the biggest music acts are saved for the night-time, after all the races.

As a footbag event, it's very informal and not very big (yet). Last year Ryan Thomas co-ordinated with some of the people the run the official events, and he invited all his footbag friends down just to have a good time. And a very good time was had. We didn't have any actual competition. There were barely a dozen of us altogether, and we just played alot on Friday afternoon, and Saturday and Sunday. There was plenty of space to play. There were actually a few different places that we played, and they were all pretty good, though we could have used more shade... When we weren't playing, it was fun to watch all the runners get muddy, and it was fun to watch the Slack-Line contest and the rock-climbing contest. Now that I think back, there was also a BMX freestyle bike-riding contest of some sort, but I think it got cancelled early because some rider crashed badly and was taken away on a stretcher (one think I love about footbag is how rarely a footbag injury will require an ambulance...). The dog-jumping contest might have been the best part...

So, to a large degree, the footbaggers at Dominion River Rock were unofficial and not much more than just spectators. But, we played alot, and Dominion River Rock staff people were nice and occasionally dropped-off cases of cold Poweraide for us, and the music was good, and if we do it again this year with a few more people, and then again the year after with a few more, than it might become a big footbag tournament in the future. Who knows -- we might even have some kind of contest this year, but, how good a footbag event is isn't based solely on how many types of footbag events the players competed in. Sometimes the best footbag events are the ones where you don't have to register and compete.

Anyway, one of the biggest determining factors for me when deciding if I should go to a particular footbag event is "how close is it to me?" If it is an easy drive, or, if I've got a friend that I can crash with half-way there to break-up a long drive, then I'm likely to go. How about you? If you can drive to Richmond, Virginia in just a few hours than you should go. If you need to purchase a plane ticket, well, then, thats a tougher decision. (you should probably list your "location" in your profile on this forum, so other people here know if you're nearby to them or not -- and your real name is good to list too).

I think Ben Barrows came all the way up from Georgia last year, and I think he came by bus... Thats a longer distance than I would usually consider, but, then again there's not too many other footbag events in the southeast any more, so Richmond, as far as it is from Georgia, was probably the closest event for him.

I'll be the contact with Riverrock. I started it last year because Riverrock seemed like a better than most fit for footbag. We had great crowd response and a very scenic riverfront to run around and kick things on. Good food and friends. Wet dogs. Dirty half naked humans running around. A very energized unique warm summer outdoors environment.

It was an awesome weekend. I think my fav. part was seeing the redbull sky divers freestyle down onto the island.

Last year we also had some great net action at a local park. We will play net again this year.

Yeah, RiverRock! Two years running, and this even is killer. More people should come to this.

The weather this year was a little worse than last year, but the music was a little better. Both years were great by almost any standard, and I'm looking forward to next RiverRock already.
