Stopped after 50 consecutive b2b insides and 75, 100 consecutive toe stalls, B2B. Playing through the rain added another level of challenge. May go back out in a bit. Definitely need to work my stamina up a bit, but it felt natural to be on my toes, which is nice.

For continuity, and since this is a new page, I am getting back into the sport after taking a little over 6 months off.

Glad to hear you are back. I think you are taking the right approach with your comeback too; you can never work those basics hard enough.

Played today. Still a lot of tension in my back, but for the first time in the greater part of a year, my pain on my left side is not as much my hips/back as it is my knee. Hoping that this will go away as my strength and form come back, after all, that was by healthy knee.

Footed a new move on both sides today: Toe barrage. This is great, as it is something I can do without pain that is forcing me to work on my toe game in a compelling/interesting/fun manner, as my hips/knees/back loosen up, my muscle and form come back and my weight/lightness-on-toes comes back to a good place.

Hit weak stepping set first try. That was nice. Hit swirl from the injured side clipper, three times in a row, and it's a clear consequence of improved (though not fully there) form. Also made one effort at torque on injured side and footed it without pain, but I need to work on my recovery before I can healthily spring into this move again. I will keep trying it out a few times per session.

The last few sessions I have concentrated on really sticking my toe delays. PM-Inf.-repeat drills are feeling a lot better and I hope to start playing out of my toes a bit more in the future. In regard to the last notion, it feels like injury and form alone are preventing me from playing out of PM's now, with atomic and quantum sets, so I have a clear idea on what I want to work up to and how. Also, I am starting to finally feel a bit more comfortable with flip pixie, so I will attempt to make this flipside and work it into my canon of tricks.

Additionally, the injured side is a lot smarter now. It knows that in order to do certain tricks that the support knee must be closer to the other knee, that the its toe should lead more perpendicular to the lateral segment between the hips and, finally, that the stalls should be parried and set from farther behind me. As a consequence of this, my flip whirls are only held back from physical pain and stamina. I think this will all come back. I am finally feeling a little bit better. It's about time :)

Oh yeah, also, I have been working on a variation of osis where I quickly hop and turn in to face the bag closer to when the stall occurs. Is this a good idea? It feels like it would be easier to play out of and seems to put less snag on my lower back. Any ideas?

Tax time. Then back to hacking Box2d with processing. Maybe I'll eat something too.

Dude, so nice to know that you're getting back into it and recovering well. If you can swing it, it'd be great to see you at PSU next weekend. If not, then hope to see you again soon. Here's to a full recovery. Peace man.

Such a beautiful day!

Today was the sort of day that made me think that part of my back-pain/injury is psychosomatic. The reason I say that is because on my hour+ commute back from teaching I just couldn't stand the traffic anymore. Without traffic it's only 45 minutes (like on the way to teach in the morning). So, I pulled a Lon Smith (see his Modest Mouse performance), got off the highway and bought some new shred-shorts and tshirts. Tried to find to some running shoes too, but that will have to wait. Essentially, I have grown frustrated and intolerant with my stagnate ways, as of recent, and when I finally got home I had the best session that I have had since the injury.

Forced myself to play for about and hour and it felt real good. Got real sweaty and real stinky.

Somethings stood out in particular. Although my injured side's clipper (strong side...) is still sore and takes mental strength and determination to play through, it is my flip drifter and today it was really good.

My dynes are getting really good and I am learning how to stick them.

When I take the pain and grab a proper clipper on my injured side, whirling swirl is so comfortable. Better than ever.

Almost hit my first motion.

Hit a blender by accident.

Started a new drill- flip toe- taw, repeat. Should have started this in the 90's. Really trying to slow down and control my toe game and this should help a bit.

Anyway, still injured, but feeling better about things.

Had a session a couple days ago where I hit the best swirl I ever hit. I don't know if it was out of an infinity or a butterfly but it was all about the clipper, the hesitation, the set, and the hesitant dex/delay. While yes, that side is injured (and has been since June/July, when I started trying to fix it) the form is feeling a lot better for playing out of and hopefully I will recover and have an evolved game.

I think the highlight was earlier in the session when I was doing a bunch of pm-infinities and sinking into each contact. The injured side still has a lot of work to go, but the right side, which used to be my weak side, is looking very promising.

I really hope my body heals soon. I really hope that I can play towards recovery, as sitting on my ass for a year hasn't done much.

Stoked to hear you are coming back, and are recovering. While taking a long time off can suck, it also provides you with a valuable opportunity to completely re-learn and re-build components. I largely credit my 6 month break from the sport in the year 2000 with helping me fix my stepping sets. I couldn't just re-adjust my technique...I had to completely forget it, and then teach myself from scratch. So yeah, view this time as both a challenge but also an opportunity.

Hi Ken,

Thank you for the excellent advice. Also, thank you to CIC Flurry for the encouragement and advice to play through the pain. Idle doesn't work. I am trying to eat better, less red meat and chicken, getting more exercise, playing more regularly and finally, having beer and or redbull and or pain reliever before and during play. Sounds like a bad idea right? Nope. My back is feeling a lot better, if there's swelling or inflammation of nerves it's gone down, my endurance is slowly coming back and my form is indeed being rebuilt.

I stopped myself from playing today shortly after I started. I didn't want to do anything in bad form.

• My first string I footed drifter to simple swirl (out of the injured side).
• Hit my smoothest, deeply-stalled boppy, guiltless bsos string I can remember hitting ever. Each delay was sticky. Reminds me of programming (which I have been doing a lot more of)- no point in flailing or worrying about the next move unless you can own the first one. This is my new mantra.
• Shortly afterwards I started schooling my useless stepping side. Hit several ripwalks. Hit my best stepping set on that side ever after figuring out that I simply wasn't taking enough into the stall in addition to throwing the setting foot up when It should have been sinking deeper.
• Footed a solid dyno to my weak whirl, first try. Felt great.
• Tried atomics out after considering some observations from my stepping-set lesson. Hit my first attempt at hippy leg and then followed into a completing a bsos.
• Decided to apply some of observations to strong stepping set (injured side). Hit one of my best stepping sets ever within a couple tries.
• Had a go at deeply-stalled ducking clippers. Hit around ten, nicely, first try.
• Had another string where I hit a bunch of clean stuff including ducks, so I decided to take out the old ducking paradox mirage and hit it clean, into the rest of a string or a satisfied hand-grab. Very short session. Very winded. Very promising :)

@Ryan: I really wish that I could make it, but there are major reasons why I won't be able to make it. That said, I wish I could and hope that you and everybody else going has a great time!

Want to document my first session with another player since East Coast's 2012.
I played a short, two-man session with Dollercoaster in WSP on Sunday. I had two Red Bull Blues and powered my way through a painful session. It was not very pleasant but it was so good to hangout with my old friend in my original shred-environment that I went with it, as far as I could. By the end of the session I was beat-red from the sun and drained enough to sleep my way through much of a 7 hour megabus trip, but I got from it a major highlight:

I finally can do hippy atomic. I did several of the best, highest and smoothest atomic sets on both sides. My one side is far better and I am pretty sure that I will be able to add some of my more difficult downtime components to it.

Also, I hit toe drifter second try, which was nice.

Aside from that, I had probably 3 strings of ~15 contacts that I felt good about, including one with ripwalk bsos in decent form. Also, when I can force myself to sink into a clipper, my left swirl is getting way better and my weak side more consistent.

The bad news is that although I know what I need to do to improve my game my left hip and knee are making it hard to sink into my clippers as I should. So, fortunately my main focus this Summer is learning Java and working on the development of a project that I just received funding for. Hopefully I will be able to rehabilitate my body and rework my game over the same duration and reemerge the player that I have wanted to be for so long. If not, I have no regrets. Footbag has been great to me and I am finally making major professional strides in my art. I hope that I will be able to continue doing this sport!

Anyway, back to programming... hopefully there will be more posts soon!

Jealous. I actually caught up with Bruce on the phone later that afternoon, and caught myself nostalgically reminiscing about those long summer afternoons in the park, shredding for hours, people watching, and just laughing like crazy. It's weird to think we all met 15 years ago, but it's also cool we're all still in touch and also still playing.

Yeah, Ken. I'm pretty sure I met Bruce in 94 or 95 and you in 97, right? The body must heal. I have struggled with my metal game this whole time and am finally learning how to slow down and hone things. I would be very disappointed if I don't get the opportunity to implement some of my recent advancements in self-discipline and patience into this art-form that I love. Perhaps, it was the sacrifice I needed in order to advance in other avenues though. One way or another, it will all be good and worth it.

Hope to catch up soon! Had Ramen with Bruce and couldn't help but think of you and Tenya!

Props on the footbag, and professional stuff as well. You will learn to love Java - esp if you use a nice IDE like eclipse. On a completely unrelated note, I am learning Python and using a Raspberry Pi to easily integrate lots of atmel/arduino chips into wifi-enabled projects (the Pi is good at networking and big boy tasks and the atmegas handle small fast stuff and are cheap) Hope all goes well with your projects, always curious to see what you come up with!

Hi Ivan,

Today I am getting schooled by the most basic of java from within processing. The projects that I am using rely on libraries and lots of looking into java.docs. I am doing cool stuff because of the libraries but I am still getting my head handed to me because of the message-calling syntax for different classes and different libraries. I am working with a collaborator that is writing classes for functions related to the kinect while I integrate them with a java version of box2d through a library called Pbox2d. I think I am just getting used to thinking in a conventional, OOP language so depending on the time of day the same task can feel either nominal or herculean.

Oh man, off topic- my friend was showing me solidworks yesterday...!!!

Always interested in hearing what you are up to as well!

Thanks Ken.

Last session that I had in NYC, about three weeks @WSP with Bruce, some things that Claven's demonstrated at Worlds 2010 finally clicked. I'm trying to learn how to hold dip into and hold all of my delays longer, so now the concept of springing up from a bent leg position to time/set/release the bag from a low point is making a lot of sense. So is the symposium kind of pop that is needed for an atomic, stepping and maybe even quantum set. Since it's my hip that's all dinged-up, I think it's going to be a while before I really start schooling stepping sets, but it is giving me time to work on my other, weak side, so that's also very good. A bad hip, a knee that's acting up, but truthfully, I finally feel like I can shred again. Hitting 24 contacts of inf.-osis-ducking clipper, repeat, first try today, really blew my mind- especially, since earlier this session I couldn't even osis on the one side.

Took a 'challenge' from a youtube post and schooled some tiltless today, in 90 degree weather. I hate hot weather, but I was able to get some contacts of legover-mirage, repeat. It was like swinging with a heavy bat in this weather though. I realize that I need to start from my left toe more, in general. Also, it's good practice, going for long strings of these, as they are forcing me to delay the bag better and stay more in control. I suppose I should practice atw's again as well, but I really, really hate that move as I am uncomfortable with the blind-aspect of it. I feel as comfortable on my left datw as I do on my weak single atw. Suppose I have no choice. Also have to start working illusion into the equation. Mostly, got to lose some weight, nurse my weak hip and learn how to stay comfortable supporting myself on my toes.

Drilled ducking clipper-whirl-rev. whirl on both sides today. Not much else other than that. Fucking hot out.

Glad you did some Tiltless work. Your game will benefit from it, I'm sure of it. As for ATW... there should be no blind aspect to it. Look on the INSIDE of your knee as you set and dex the bag. That should make it easier. Good luck schooling Tiltless. School it for a week or two and I promise you'll see a trickle-up effect in your Guiltless game. Hope you're doing well. Miss shredding with you.
