Rev Swirling Blender is a fucking gnarly trick, to say the least. Easily one of my favorite 5 ADDs. Madd props on that shit. Ok, now keep getting better at footbag. I can see you going damn far in footbag if you really keep on it. Will keep up with this blog from now on. You should definitely keep posting in here. Looking forward to reading the interview. You should release a new video along with it, like I did for mine :D

Birthday jam!

My birthday happened to fall on a Saturday this year and I didn't have any plans so I organized a footbag session in Toronto. There was an awesome turnout!

Nathan Deschamps who lives pretty close to me but I haven’t heard from in ages RSVP'd to this event which was a pleasant surprise. Saturday morning I got ready and made the 20 minute drive to Bowmanville to pick him up. On the way to the train station I learned that he still practices by himself about 30 minutes per day which is awesome! It was nice to have company on the train for a change. I chose to have the session at trinity square near the Eaton centre since it was easily walkable from union. The weather was great! Normally it’s super hot and sticky on my birthday so this was a nice change.

We arrived at the location on time and after maybe about 5 minutes or so Erik arrived! I learned that unfortunately he wouldn't be playing today but I was happy that he came out anyways. In a short time Mike appeared and at some point him, Nathan and I started kicking casually. We probably did street hack stuff for like 45 minutes and I actually had a lot of fun trying stuff like flyers and kick-ducking. I rarely enjoy kicking this much but it was super fun and I think I hit a few new 1-adds :P Kicking was also a really good way to get loose and warm up. Interestingly we probably got about the same amount of attention for our hack skills from passers-by as we would by freestyling. The tricks we were doing are probably much easier to understand so I think that’s part of it.

Eventually we moved to the middle of the labyrinth which was now sufficiently shady and Erik joined in a tiny bit. We had just begun to do stally tricks when Johnny finally arrived! Now it was on! Footbag tricks were hit and one by one JJ, Tom and Adam arrived! We had enough people for two circles!

My game was feeling pretty good and I had quite a few decent runs with pretty good variety but not really any specific highlights that I recall. Johnny helped Nathan learn Nuclear set pretty much from scratch. Everyone seemed to be playing well. JJ has improved noticeably and Adam was killing it as usual. Both Erik and Tom did some filming so hopefully we’ll see some footage soon :)

Johnny stitched me a really sexy bag for my birthday.
Image

He wasn’t happy with it saying he gathered too much. It will need some breaking in but I still love it. It’s sooooo pretty and super round. I think it’s going to be a really nice bag.

Tom had to leave after a while and he gave me a big awesome birthday hug for the second time that day. It’s super cool to see him so frequently lately and he even told us he had a solo practice session which was good to hear!

I was pretty sore and tired after a couple hours of shred and Johnny said he was going to check out the condo he rented for the night. Other people were still playing but I opted to go have a shower and get changed. We walked a few blocks and arrived at a high-rise with a swanky looking entrance. The concierge let us in but told us we had to go back out to the entrance and buzz the apartment. Johnny asked where the elevator was and the guard refused to tell him. We exited only to dial the code and be buzzed back in. This time the guard told us where the elevator was and we rode it up 27 stories. We found ourselves on the floor directly below the penthouse suites. Johnny had some cryptic text message instructions from the guy who owns the condo. Apparently we were to find some lockbox in the stairwell across from the apartment. We found the stairwell and looked around but didn`t see anything. Johnny gave up pretty much right away but I persisted and found these two little code-lock boxes hanging from the railing. Johnny put the code in the first box with no success and was finally able to retrieve the key from the second box. We go to finally enter the condo and the key didn`t seem to work? After a brief struggle we were in! What an ordeal this had been.

The condo was super small but pretty fancy. You could tell a single, male businessman lived here. We showered and headed back out to meet up with everyone back at the shred spot.

By the time we got back everyone was finished playing and pretty hungry. JJ had to get going so I gave him a hug and we started walking to find food. According to Adam there was nothing in the area except Chinese food places. Johnny didn’t really want this because he got food poisoning from it before and I can’t say I blamed him. He pointed out that we were right near a Red Lobster which is pretty much one of my favourite places. We ended up deciding on that and went to check out how busy they were. It was kinda strange cause when we got there they told us a 25 minute wait. We weren’t down with that and we were about to leave. At this point the hostess said we could have this huge table in to middle if we wanted. It was the perfect, why wouldn’t we want the big awesome table in the middle?
The six of us sat down and had a pretty good meal. I felt kinda bad that we brought Nathan, a vegan, to Red Lobster. Not really many vegan options at a place like that. He ended up with some vegetable skewer things. I think Johnny asked him how they were and his response was “Pretty bad- I mean pretty good”. I told him I was inclined to believe his initial response :P

At some point we were talking about eating weird kinds of food and the best quote of the day was definitely from Erik:

“Chicken feet: they taste like chicken only you have a foot in your mouth”

After dinner we hit the LCBO and split up with Adam who had to go walk his dog or something. We went back to the condo and Mike, Nathan, Erik, Johnny and myself hung out on the super high balcony and talked and had some drinks. It is disturbingly easy to see into the bathrooms of some of the condos in the adjacent building. Many jokes were made.

Eventually Adam returned and we decided to check out the patio on the roof. It was really nice up there and a bunch of people in nice collared shirts were talking and having drinks. We hung out and enjoyed the view up there for a while. Mike spotted these three dots in the sky that were moving in formation kind fast through the sky. He was convinced they were some sort of extra-terrestrial UFOs.

At some point I was sitting on the ledge of the high-rise and Johnny held my legs while I leaned back upside-down over the edge. It was a super trippy feeling to hang over such a high ledge like that.

I talked to Erik a bunch about skydiving which I really want everyone to come do with me next year! He seems interested in the idea but kind of reluctant because he thinks it will make him sick or something. I hope he decides to try it because it is such a unique and incredible experience and I don’t think he will regret it.

At around 11:30 the guard came over and told us the patio was closing. We headed back to the apartment and had some more drinks. There was talk of going out but we sort of lost motivation and it didn’t actually happen. It didn’t matter though cause it was a lot of fun just hanging out with the guys. After a while Mike and Erik had to get going to catch trains and Adam left to meet up with a friend who just got to town. I got some good hugs and then it was just Nathan, Johnny and I. We were pretty tired and got some sleep pretty soon after Adam left.

The condo was super bright in the morning and so we all woke up pretty early. I had a weird variety of drinks the night before which resulted in a pretty nasty headache but I felt alright other than that. The three of us got some breakfast nearby and once again Nathan didn’t really have too many options. Sorry dude! We’ll have to check out a vegan place next time.

The three of us went back to trinity square this morning for round two. We chose a shred spot in a slightly different location that had decent shade and we had a good three-man session. Nathan didn't play too long because he was sore from the day before. I really love playing one-on-one with Johnny. He’s so fucking good at footbag and he was playing even better today!! He hit some really cool new stuff like Nuke Twirl and Nuke Blink. He had some pretty good attempts at a Nuke Swirling set which is really neat. He also hit a set that I don’t think I've ever seen before – fairy reverse swirling. I think he hit mirage out of it. So much awesome shit!

I was pretty beat so I wasn't much into doing long runs but I did have some decent highlights:

Butterfly Swirl BSOS
BSOS midstring Atomic tricks
Atomic Paradon BS
Phasing Pickup BS
Spinning Whirl

After our session we grabbed some cold drinks at Starbucks and Nathan and I said goodbye to Johnny. I was sad that I probably wouldn't see him for another month. I reflected about how awesome it is that I have had the opportunity to play with him so often lately that a month seems like a long time.

I'm so happy that we had such a good turnout again this weekend!! There is nothing I would rather have done on my birthday. I'm lucky to have so many cool footbaggers close enough geographically to make this happen. I definitely need to take advantage of this fact more often!!

Nice highlights! I somehow missed most of those. Fusion is sick -- that's a hard one for me! I challenge you to more spinning -- it's really fun. It was a really great time even though I didn't play.

The Monday after a footbag weekend is always particularly painful. Luckily I was able to get a session in and hit a few new tricks.

Flip Spinning Whirl
Spinning Osis bs
Ducking Legover bs
Ducking Pickup bs

My reverse swirling stuff is starting to feel more comfortable. I had a pretty fun run today with 4 or 5 twirls in it.

I really want to keep playing every day but I have a feeling school is going to swallow me soon :?

Thanks!

Drill session again today. Spinning is starting to click. It’s actually kinda fun now that I can sort of do it. Hit my first real gyro tricks today and practiced a bunch more rev swirling stuff. Also worked on some other stuff like pinchers and flappers a little.

Spinning Ducking Clipper bs
Gyro near Legover bs
Gyro far Legover bs
Gyro Whirl bs

Playing as much as I have been lately is only helping to feed my motivation by making the progress tangible. I’m improving noticeably every session.

I feel another Toronto session coming on this weekend ;)

Hell yes with the spins! The best way to get better at spinning is to set your Gyro Clipper record somewhere near 30. After your gyro clippers get that good, spinning will start to come easier than first hand. Spinning is the best concept in footbag, phuck the haterz :D Well alpine stepping is right up there too... Same with Swirling... Well... Regardless, keep spinning :P Best of luck!

August 24

Session in Toronto today!
Image

I arrived at Trinity square shortly after noon. I was pretty early since the session wasn’t to start until around 1. The area was uncharacteristically busy since Buskerfest is happening on Yonge street this weekend. I noticed that there were face painters and since I was waiting for people to show up I got this done:

Image

I watched a somewhat entertaining breakdancing show while I waited for people to arrive. Soon I met up with Derrick Ogden who came all the way out from Kingston to play with us! We hung out and messed around a bit until Camille arrived. The three of us warmed up with some light shred and eventually Mike and Johnny appeared. The area was swarming with pedestrians and none of us really wanted the trouble of playing in a busy place so we found a shady concrete area in the corner of Trinity square.

I was super stoked to play footbag with all these awesome people but unfortunately five is just the most awkward footbag number. I didn’t play very well today because I just couldn’t get into a groove in a five man circle. Especially considering there seemed to be a lot of self-serving happening which kinda kills the pace of the circle.

At one point I left the circle and started playing alone to try and get warmed up. I managed to steal Johnny from the circle and have a decent two-man with him for a bit. He’s good at footbag.

Derrick has improved noticeably since worlds. Mike played really well today and Camille’s game is also getting more consistent. Good stuff all around.

I can only remember one decent run that I had today. At one point I messed up and landed on my ankle resulting in a fall. I was okay but kind of fed up and I think I ended the session with that. I would much prefer to have finished on a more positive note.

Only a couple new things

Blurriest BSOS
Tapping Drifter

Johnny sold me a pair of white/grey quantums! They were an 8 and I thought they might be too big but they fit perfect!! Pretty pumped to try them out.

Damn Cassy, Worlds really got your footbag blood flowin, eh? Your recent highlights are crazy! Looks like the TO scene is alive and well. And Mike's still kickin! So awesome. Have you hit vortex/mobius/gyro dlo? If not I challenge you to hit those 3 tricks. :)

Yo Cassy!

Great interview! Even better video... You were killing it. Your Ripsteins looks so fucking good. I'm jealous :P Also, still can't believe you listed me as on of your favorite players. That totally made my day. I'm glad you're playing again. Before Worlds, I was really excited to see that you started playing again. Don't give up and keep on your shit. You're going to be a really sick player one day. Can't wait to compete against you in the Open category at Worlds '14 ;) Props for wanting to get out of female freestyle and compete against the guys. That's really respectable and also really scary because you're probably going to beat the shit out of me :P We should brainstorm sometime about how to interest more female freestylers. I just have to think of a good idea that we can go off of. Keep it up Cassy!

See you at ECFC! Hopefully :P

It’s awesome having so many cool people post in my blog. Thanks for the support guys!! :D

I went to my great aunts birthday party on Sunday and it ended up being basically a family reunion. A bunch of family I haven’t seen in many years were there, it caught me off guard a little.

My mom’s cousin put me on the spot and I did a footbag demo for the whole family. It went poorly because it was my first time wearing quantums and I wasn’t warmed up or used to them yet. It was well received anyways so no big deal I guess.

I played for a little while at the party but didn’t get to have a proper session on Sunday.

I’m pretty sore today from playing on concrete all weekend. After spending about 20 minutes messing around with the insoles and laces of my new shoes I finally found a comfortable fit. My session wasn’t great today because I had to avoid certain things due to pain.

Anssi made good points in his Shred Global interview about focusing on links rather than drills when practicing. Inspired by this I worked on links including Osis>Ripwalk and Osis>Swirl.

Flappers are coming along, they are a lot of fun! Also working on really sticking that Ripstein so I can get a playable set out if it.

Definitely need to take it easy for a while. My weekends have been filled with footbag for about two straight months. Camping over the long weekend will give me a good opportunity to have a footbag break :D

I finally played footbag again today!

I definitely needed that break. My body felt fresh and almost completely pain free. Unfortunately it is frosh week so I pigged out on free burgers/icecream prior to my session. This definitely killed my endurance a bit. I didn’t have any highlights since I mostly just focussed on drilling low impact stuff like spinning, ducking and swirls.

It just felt soo good to finally play! I was super stressed out from school stuff and kicking just makes everything better.

Camping this weekend was a lot of fun but it was actually kinda weird because I’ve been hanging out with footbag people all summer. My other friends are cool but it was a way different vibe for sure.

I gotta say part of me is kinda glad not a lot of women play footbag because if they did there would be a lot more footbag couples. This is all well and good but quite honestly couples are borrrrring :P Most couples never break from their unit and tend to miss out on cool stuff single people do. Footbag parties are so freaking fun cause most of the boys don’t have women around to kill it ;)

Just kidding (sort of..)

The women that do happen to play are cool as fuck so maybe everything I just said is irrelevant.

Okay session today. Here are the highlights:

Making this video made me realise that I need to make my Osis nicer and then I need to start doing it way less.

I have a bunch of new concepts that I can do but my consistency with a lot of them isn’t where I would like and my run length is really suffering as a result. It’s a little frustrating but I know it’ll get better.

Lots of footbag things coming up! I’m going to Brantford to play with Johnny this weekend. Next weekend Matt Cross is coming out and Hamilton Supercrawl is happening. Two weeks after that is East Coast champs which I’m praying that I can make it to.

Super stoked!!
