Life With Derek: A Footblog (PSU)

Post by derekmikesell »

It appears that I have been summoned by Kevin Hogan, and so without further ado, by popular demand: Hello, my name is Derek Mikesell and this is my Footblog.

:!: Disclaimer: I write with the grace of Hemmingway and am about as terse as Tolstoy; in other words i'm brutish and long-winded. I apologize in advance.

Where to start?

I guess I can start with some of the things that I have hit in the past. Then maybe I can get into some of the things I wish to hit in the future.

The tricks I have hit include, but are not limited to:
--Toe, Clipper, Inside, Flapper, Sole
--Around the World, Orbit
--Leg Over, Far Legover, Same legover
--Pickup, Far Pickup, Same Pickup
--Mirage, Same/Near Mirage, Symp Mirage, Pdx Mirage
--Illusion, Pdx Illusion
--Ducking Toe, Ducking Clipper, Ducking Pdx Mirage, Diving toe, Diving clipper, Weaving toe, Weaving Clipper, Zulu Toe, Zulu Clipper
--Whirl
--Hop Over, Reverse Hop Over
--DLO
--Osis, Far Osis
--Pdx Dada Curve
--Drifter
--Butterfly
--Symp Quantum, Atomic, Stepping (I must admit I am absolutely atrocious at the latter two)

These are the tricks that I can remember off of the top of my head, there may be others.

The tricks/themes I want to get in the future:
--Whirling Swirl (It feels so natural)
--Improve the Ducking Game
--Pdx Drifter
--Basics, basics, basics, and more basics
--Figuring out how to overcome some handicaps

Now that we have gotten some of the basic introductory stuff out of the way I guess I can tell my story and catch up the rest of the world with my progress. Feel free to skip to the end if you'd like.

My name is Derek Mikesell. 22. I come from a small area commonly referred to as Bumblefuck, Pa. But you won't find that on a map anywhere. I'd suggest looking for Home if you're really trying to find me. The place is about as interesting as the inside of an empty cereal box. The closest thing I had in my life to "hacky-sack" or footbag during these years was a knitted bag emblazoned with a large cross on it; a prize from the Christian Bible School camp I attended at the request of my Grandparents. After quickly defacing it to that of an advertisement for the band Bad Religion it was lost to the depths of my closet, of which I still have not fully explored. I participated in a handful of different athletic adventures throughout my primary schooling. Basketball, baseball, football, soccer, weight lifting, but found the most success and interest in track and cross country. I ran every event from the 100 meter dash to the 5000 meter run; winning a few team titles along the way. I was incredibly lucky my junior year when I was graced by a career ending hip injury in the second lap of the 800m race at the County Invitational. An injury that still plagues me today, severely hindering my ability to progress on my weak side (one of the handicaps I am trying to overcome, but keeps fighting back).

Fast forward a few years and I am in attendance at the Pennsylvania State University, majoring in Mathematics, minoring in Economics. Without physical activity (mainly running), which defined a large part of my being in high school, my life has become a constant dullness of school and work. Exciting. 21 years old and I have yet to find this sport that now takes up so much of my time (in a good way) - a late start if I have ever heard of one. Amidst all of the hullabaloo that was university life, footbag fell into my lap quite randomly. One evening I found myself at the apartment of a friend of a friend, and individual I could call an acquaintance at best, it was his birthday. The night charges on and I find myself another mile away, blocks off of campus in a residence fondly referred to as "The Shred House." To be honest, I didn't exactly know what I was getting myself into. There was talk of a party, a rave. Within the confines of the apartment, something completely different appeared to be going on - but hell, I've never been to a rave so for all I know it was one - I was pretty sure it wasn't. What I saw took me back to that same Christian camp where I received my first bag. On the floor, in the living room, was a four square court stained into the carpet, the result of tape residue from some boundaries past. Four square was the most common pass time at that camp when we were given a second to breathe. But instead of playing with a ball, they were playing with a bag. I had already taken my shoes off at the door and was wearing pants, but I thought to myself, "fuck it" and jumped right in. And well. I never got out after that. From four square to toe stalls, the night progressed from the game to the sport. I got my first real bag, a 32 panel, and walked home with a deep soreness in my legs I wouldn't forget for a while.

I've been playing for 9 months now - 7 months if you take away an injury laden summer, no thanks to my hips. I've met some of the coolest people I know in this sport, from all over the country/world. I'm a graduate student now, still at Penn State (although I'll be transferring out to Stanford if things go correctly) and a member of the PSU club. I recently participated in my first full fledged tournament in New York. East Coasts was a blast, but competing was a real roller coaster. After three rounds that would have enraged Mother Theresa, I fought back with some pretty decent strings and as a result became the East Coast Novice Circle Champ - if that counts for anything. I'm a pessimist at best, and super goal oriented - something that has been both good and bad throughout my training. But, I've been taking up too much of your time already so lastly I'd like to thank a few people. First, Marc Peralta for introducing me to this whole deal. Nick Polini and Nate Pipenberg for really solidifying my interest with enthusiasm and skill, and being two of the best mentors/role models I could think to have in this crazy trip. The rest of the PSU club for being awesome and being there to kick with on a moments notice. And finally, all of the awesome people I've met over the last 9 months for being great people and so accepting of a newcomer.

Feel free to comment on my blog, this whole thing should be as much about community as it is about me.

Peace.

Welcome to Modified! Glad you finally made a blog! For someone who didn't know what to write in it, I have to say, this was THE BEST first blog entry I've ever read. Yes, I copy/pasted that directly from our facebook chat :P But really, 10 thumbs up. You're a great writer. I thought you were supposed to only be good at maths. wow. I was wrong. I'm glad you stuck with it on that day of the rave. That was really cool to read because I just kinda relived that rave night. Can't wait to kick with you again man. Keep it up. Basics, basics, basics ;)

I'd like to start out by saying thank you to Nick and Dan for the kind words. Much appreciated. Additionally, for those of you who viewed my footblog but did not comment: fuck you ... um, no that is not right at all. Thanks for taking the time to look at it ... yeah that is it <3. ( :!: If you want to skip all the bull shit, feel free to skip down to the lists)

I've been quite disappointed with how I have been playing recently. When I first joined the club here at PSU I was seeing huge gains nearly every session. Hitting new tricks. Larger strings. More consistency. Then around the end of last semester I hurt myself pretty badly drilling drifter and drifted off the path of progress. I spent most of the summer just watching Nate play - which, in all honesty, is not a terrible way to spend a summer with respect to footbag. I started playing again at the end of the summer and more consistently at the beginning of the semester. Things haven't been clicking though. Tricks have been feeling clunky, and while I have hit many new tricks and even adopted new themes into my game, I haven't been happy.

So, as an attempt to ameliorate this little dilemma I decided today that I will start solo shredding a lot more. I love kicking in a group. I really do. But I find it hard to really drill when there is such a high propensity to circle up. I personally feel that I am just not at the point where I gain a lot of benefit from circling - outside of the experience of circling itself. I expressed my concern to Nick, which resulted in my fourth point in my future directions: basics. As I stated, I am super goal oriented and always go into sessions trying to find measurable progress. To me this manifested itself in hitting new tricks. I'd spend entire sessions drilling one trick trying to hit something just once. To be frank, this is a god damned waste of time and it took me way too long to really bite on to that concept. So today's solo (turned duo by the random appearance of Khoa) session was all about some basics. A lot of basics.

10/15/13 - Which, if I am not mistaken, is the date of this post.

The following image contains the session notes. If you cannot read my ancient scrawling with fountain pen on sweat soaked paper I will summarize afterwards.

Image

Here is a list of the drilling:
  • 100 Strong Side Clippers
  • 100 Weak Side Clippers
  • 50 SS Mirages
  • 50 WS Mirages
  • 100 SS Clippers
  • 100 WS Clippers
  • 50 SS Mirages
  • 50 WS Mirages
  • 100 SS Clippers
  • 100 WS Clippers
  • 50 SS Mirages
  • 50 WS Mirages
  • 100 SS Clippers
  • 100 WS Clippers
  • 50 SS Mirages
  • 50 WS Mirages
  • 100 SS Clippers
  • 100 WS Clippers
I also freestyled a bit at the end, but was awfully tired. Still had some good runs though. In addition to the drilling alone, there are some remarks to be made. These remarks generally include new records or the first time I have counted the number of times I've done the trick.

Notes:
  • 19 SS Mirages x2
  • 9 WS Mirages
  • 12 WS Clippers
  • 22 SS Clippers
  • Back to back ducking clipper
Analysis:

All in all, I did 1000 clippers in drills (and more than that if you include the freestyle stuff I did afterwards) and 200 mirages (same goes for these). I feel like I had a real break through today with my strong side clipper. I was having real issues with consistency. Could never get more than 9. By the end of my drilling I was hitting strings of 17+ regularly. That record of 22 would have been much higher if some god damned fairy didn't stab me in the leg and cause me to cramp up. My strong side mirages are actually burdened more by my eyes than my legs. At around 16, my eyes water up to the point where I can barely see. Odd. WS mirage saw some progress. Its so hard for me to do weak side things. I'm quite happy with the progress I made. As for my WS clipper. Fuck that. Its as sporadic as ever. And while I set a record that was over my old SS record, it is super inconsistent. I have no control over that leg - and after a while it feels like a hydraulic pump operating in a sandstorm. Back to back ducking was something that was bound to happen. Glad if finally did. All that clipper work is making my game feel a lot better too. Really happy for once.

I was going to keep it short today on the practice discussion side and write something inspired by Honza, but it seems that I have written another book already. Maybe I'll post on a day where I don't get to play.

Once again thanks for everything.

Peace.

First off, that fairy stab comment fucking cracked me up. Like uncontrollable laughter. Good shit. I love reading this for the laughs and also it looks like my words are finally setting in! :D so happy to see you're doing a lot of basics in here. Also REALLY surprised by some of those numbers. Totally blew me away. Fantastic job on those, Derek. Its funny, this list reminded me of when I went back to basics, and from my experience.. you're only going to get happier from there. Also I know flip clipper is tough for you due to the injury, but it looks like you're not letting that get you down. Really awesome job on the flip clippers and I smiled when I saw ducking clipper b2b. Fuck yeah man. You're getting there. Keep up these drills and don't be afraid to drill some super basics like toe kicks, inside stalls and stuff. Keep up the great work and fun way of writing. I'm really digging your bologna... autocorrect changed "blog" to "bologna" but I'm just gonna leave it like that. Keep up this type of drilling every other day and you're really gonna surprise yourself... and me :P

Sorry Derek. I'm one of the viewers, but un-commenters. Truthfully, I skimmed, but I know it's good stuff and I will sit down and read the posts and creep on your footblog (eventually and continuously). Just remember that. :)

After the first half hour of playing today I figured that I was going to have to write: "What a waste of damn time." Well, all in all it wasn't particularly bad on the whole. I apologize to those of you expecting a lengthy post, I have to wake up super early to get interrogated; woo. Today was mostly a circle session with the PSU guys (as Lauren, April, and Kat didn't show up...tisk tisk). Here are some of the noteworthy things:
  • 10 strong side drifters
  • 2 weak side drifters
  • Stepping legover
  • Stepping far clipper
  • B2B ducking again (but only once)
  • 27 strong side mirages
  • 22 strong side clippers (after starting a string)
I was obscenely tired today. Old folk homes seem like a party compared to how I felt. I started the session not being able to hit anything, but ended with some good strings with ducking, whirls, pdx tricks and more, in string. I also hit a trick a bunch of times that I was too scared to hit (recall my summer ending injury). There may be things I have missed. I'm super exhausted right now.

Wish me luck tomorrow.

godspeed.

I've been gone hella long.

What's going on in my life. Well I have been a little more busy than I like being. Graduate school in mathematics is fun on its own. Working full time as a research and development engineer is great. Having to fill out a ton a applications to places like stanford, berkeley, mit, cornell, and many more is draining. I apologize greatly for disappearing for so long. Sometimes life just gets in the way :/

Anywho. Lets get back to business and talk baggie foot or as my friends like to call it, when they are semi mocking me of course, flip cup.

My last post was October 16th. Jesus H. Christ. (I have decided that do to the geographical location of the potential jesus, his middle name was probably hussein).

I have had a few solo sessions since Oct 16h. In which I have upped my records, but I lost the paper that had any specifics. 33 strong side mirages. Something else. Idk. It has been too long.

The biggest even that has occurred in my absence was the PSU Halloween Pumpkin Jam. It was pretty damn sick. Got to play super long hours with some really cool ppl. Kemmer, Toolan, Pipe, Polini, etc. etc. etc. (and of course the psu crew). I upped my ss clipper to 45 on the first day after starting a string. Hit ducking clipper, which was pretty interesting I guess. Oh yeah, I have hit quantum symp sets, and hit quantum symp legover. That was interesting (all started from an ankle discomfort). Got some sick nasty food, played 4 square (got my ass beat - super good at getting my ass beat), and had a all around good time.

I haven't played too much because of the holidays and all of the work I've had to do. Because of ppl like Ivan I have started working in a lot more illusions into my game and went from hating the trick, to absolutely loving it. Because of nick I have been trying to work in tricks out of my weak clipper. What a pain in the ass. But its starting to come along. Ivan even said things are starting to look decent - at least from his angle looking up from the floor.

Should be kicking with Nate, Ivan, and I'm sure a bunch of other people later today. pretty happy about that. Need to get back in the swing of things.

Peace.

Hello world.

I am not sure whether to call today a bad day or a good day. There is one thing that I know for sure. That there were a helluva lot of symposium tricks hit/attempted today.

A few sessions have happened since my last post. The first one resulted in me messing up my hip pretty badly doing a super easy trick and every session since then has been my aggravating it. I have been trying to not let it get in my way. The first session since my post was rather anticlimactic as it was my first time back after a break (which I think I covered in the last post). The next session was one I was not planning on even going to because I had a fluid dynamics seminar (that ended up getting cancelled) and did not have clothes. I played anyway and hit some quantum sets in normal shoes and jeans. Hurt my hip. Quit playing. Fantastic. The next session that I attended occurred today. So back to why I don't know whether I should call today a good or bad day. The reason I say this is because I hit quite a few new tricks today, but on the flip side I really hurt my hip. Normal stuff until I landed on it wrong and it popped.

EDIT: I looked up some anatomy pictures of the human hip and from where it is hurting it appears to be my sartorius muscle. The pain occurs where the muscle connects to my pelvis. When I messed it up badly in high school I'm guessing I messed up that connection. Anyone happen to have any insight on this particular problem?

Whatever. Let us talk about the good and forget the bad, because it was definitely a nice session with some of the PSU Crew today.

The new tricks and high notes of today include:
 WS Weaving Clipper
 WS Weaving Catwalk
 Symposium Whirl
 4 consecutive (EDIT2) Symp Quantum sets
 Catwalk (don't know why I haven't done that considering how many hopovers I do)
 Ducking Spinning Toe
 Also hit a super clean ducking paradox mirage

I also gave some pretty decent attempts at some interesting tricks including:
 Whirling Swirl
 WS Weaving Swirl
 WS Weaving Symposium Mirage

So yeah, good tricks and a lot of pain. We will see where things go from here, but hopefully in the right direction :D
