I sure hope it will be great event. There won't be any livestreaming. GoPro will sent a mediateam that will produce a short professional video from the event. Whatever that means.

I think there should definitely be some more of these articles. I have some in my mind, particularly about applying for grants and sponsorships. I think a lot of the focus in footbag is about doing better tricks, getting better at playing, but considering that most of us have some role in the footbag organising side of things, all of us should be focusing on how to do that better too.

I will probably do it. It won't be the ultimative guide, just some of my experiences and opinions on the subjects.

Yesterday we had a small orientation meeting for the members of the club about Danish Footbag Open.
Lise was the only surprise guests. She is injured but she has some plans for a cool project at DFO.

Afterwards we played some footbag.
The room was super hot so I didn't do any drilling or long runs as I had planned.
But I did hit some big stuff:
- Phoenix > Reverse Whirlygig
- Flip Pixie Tripwalk and Flip Pixie Quantum Legover
- Pixie Schmoe
- Pixie Quantum Legover > Pixie DOD off my foot
- Blurry Legover > Same Symp Rev Whirl [rpt] > Run

DANISH FOOTBAG OPEN 2013 PART I

It begins..

Jon Schneider arrived on wednesday afternoon at my place. Jon gave me a bottle of Southern Comfort. Thanks for that. We talked footbag, Denmark vs USA and other stuff for a few hours and then went out to watch some football (or as he would call it “Soccer”). The game was the biggest danish team FCK against italian giants Juventus. The Italians won and Jonathan drove a lot of the spectators crazy by talking through the entire game. I thought it was pretty funny. Jon sure does talk a lot but he is also an oracle of footbag knowledge. After the game we went to a bar for a few beers with a couple of friends of mine. Good times. We stumbled home and slept fairly early.

Thursday

We woke up from Matthias Lino Schmidt knocking on my window. It was still pretty early and Matthias wanted to catch some sleep after getting up super early. So I moved from my to bed to the kitchen and did some organisational stuff. Shortly after half of Team Finland arrived. Most of them immediately crashed out on my floor. The rest of us watched some Blackie Sack, listened to some Finnish rap music and my new hit single. A lot of laughs and general banter ensued.
Afterwards me and Samu Ahola went to the offices of Playground CPH to pick up banners, the awesome Skullcandy and GoPro prizes and to take a look at my neighbourhood. We got back woke up the others and drank a few beers before heading to Bankeråt to meet Aleksi, Anssi, PeGe and David Castillo.

A few beers and a great pizza later we headed to the event site to play some footbag. I definitely had a beer or two too many to be playing but I knew that it would be hard for me to fit in any footbag for the rest of the weekend. I kicked for about an hour. Jumped from circle to circle. Played for a while with Lauri Airinen and Santeri Karvinen. After showering, getting dressed and a few more beers at the event site we did this weird finnish variation of HORSE. That was a lot of fun.
We went to a bar close by the event site and got super drunk, played foosball and catched up. I scored a great winning goal on a trickshot. It was super nice to hang out with Rasmus Rendsvig again who have been in Amsterdam for the past 5 months. Caroline Birch showed up and that took a lot of people by surprise (she had sent me a message early that day that she would make it). She had some amazing footbag news but I will let her share them herself when time is.

Most of the international players went home but the danish raged on for about an hour. We could have kept it going all night but we all knew we had to save some energy for the coming days. I took a cab home with Jon Schneider and slept like a baby.


Friday


The official event t-shirt
I woke up and sent Jon on his way to his hotel. Then I went to my good friend Salih’s t-shirt printing business to pick up the shirts. They looked amazing. I did the design and was happy that so many people were stoked on them. I got to the event site as the first person. Shortly after players and organisers started arriving and finally registration opened. The event had officially started!

First up was routines and I decided to compete. I ended being the first player on stage - I knew it would go badly but with only 3 danish players participating atleast I would be able to call myself number three in Denmark. I had way too many drops but I put a show and had fun with it. Everybody else did great routines and I enjoyed watching the competition unfold.

I judged circle. First up was a two man circle with Juho and Lauri Airinen. Great way to start. There was a lot of interesting things going down in competition. Mathias Blau almost beat Anssi in their circle for example. It was a blast to judge. Afterwards people shredded for a while and then we all ordered pizza and drank beers. We went to a club called Rust. Where my friend had forgotten our guestlist, I fixed that and we partied hard there most of the night.

DANISH FOOTBAG OPEN 2013 PART II


Early Saturday

I woke up pretty early saturday and headed to the event site. Dropped off some things. Found out I had forgotten some things, back home, back to the event site and got started setting up the last things. Kim, Nis and Rasmus arrived pretty much at the same time. We finished setting up the bar, banners, dj-equipment while people slowly arrived. My younger brother arrived and pretty much took care of the bar and shop all day. Thanks for that.


Request contest

Competition started with request, shred30, sick3 and sick1 one after each other. I handled the microphone all day. That was an interesting experience. I think I did fairly well even though I felt a little ridiculous at the times. Sick3 and Sick1 was sick. I was already able to tell shred30 would gonna be a close call and Milan and Lauri hit all the possible combos for Request, so Samu and I had to make up some more on the spot. High quality all around for sure.


Break Time

After that there was a couple of hours break. There was a really nice arabic buffet for all the players and helpers. My mom came by. A couple of friends came by to say hello. Judges worked hard to get ready. I got a few beers and started feeling more comfortable with my MC role - “When I Say Foot, You Say Bag! FOOT..!”.

There was starting to gather a decent audition. My guess would be 50 people. I would like there to have been twice as much.. Next time! First up was routines. Mikko Lepisto did a great routine. David Castillo did a great routine. Mathias Blau did the first and only dropless routine. That was definitely a highlight for me! Aleksi and Milan both did great routines. Last up was the Circle final consisting of Juho, Anssi, Aleksi and Milan. Great stuff from everybody. Happy I didn’t have to judge that one.

Ceremony and Surprise


Shred30 prize ceremony. Juho on third with 211 points and Mathias second with 212 points.

Next up was the prize ceremony. I can’t remember all the results so I won’t reveal them. But there was some surprises, some deserved winners and a general an enjoyable ceremony. Happy that Aleksi won the GoPro camera. I am sure he will put it to good use.

Afterwards I did a small speech for Mads Neuhard and Mads Hole. Since they did the first Danish Open 10 years ago and if it wasn’t them none of us would be playing and none of us would be together in that room that night. Once again a big thanks to them. There was a cake with their faces on. They were happy.

DANISH FOOTBAG OPEN 2013 PART III

Final day

I was abruptly awakened late sunday morning by Team Finland knocking on my window. They had gotten kicked out of Kim’s house. Some of them needed more sleep but Aleksi, Anz and I went to the gym after a little while of banter. The reason why most of them still needed sleep was because of a stomach infection that hit most of Team Finland. It bums me out that their weekend had to be affected in a bad way by this, but there was really nothing I could have done about it. At the gym there was a bunch of people sitting eating. I just chilled. Matthias Schmidt showed off and we went out to find some kebab. Really good to see him again even though it wasn’t long ago he visited me last time. Definitely gonna head to Berlin to hang with him and the others early spring.

Back at the event site Jon, Tuomas, Jana, Caroline, Schneider, Verena, Paul Santner, Trenner, his girlfriend and Michael were playing. Me and Matthias watched for a couple of hours.


It was fucking A!

We said our goodbyes to people and Anz, Aleksi, Jon, Matthias and I ate at some salad bar. On the way home we bought a kebab for Lauri on our way home. I think he ate more than 10 at the tournament. We said our goodbyes to Jon and after a few hours I crashed out with my floor filled with finnish people. Huge smile on my face.

Attracting players. Footbag specific marketing. This is obviously not the same as doing a marketing for any event. Good work on the MCing too...that's something that goes completely unappreciated but is such an important part of any event.

Yesterday Copenhagen was hit by a storm called Bodil. Not a Sandy but still it made it hard to go to the weekly thursday practice.
But as you know - You have to tend to your footbag game.

First me and Kim had a short meeting about DFO and future plans.
Nothing decided yet but a lot of ideas and we are both eager to get started on the next big project.

Me and Kim started kicking and after a little while Jasper joined the fun.

Number 5 is the absolute most important. No follow up or a bad follow up and that will be that for the future of possible sponsorships with company x. I wonder how many players have a GoPro? Maybe it could be good to do an online competition to get the best go pro footage. Give them a bit of an extra publicity for free. That could be something fun.
