I haven’t had much time or energy to post lately but I have been playing a couple times a week. Despite not playing too frequently I have seen noticable progress in a couple concepts recently. Between that and Joulukalenteri I’m pretty stoked to play again.
Yesterday was my third day in a row playing. I’ve been having short sessions in a high traffic area near the weight room lately which have been alright. Wednesday I was having probably the best session I’ve had since ECFC. Until this guy came up and started talking to me. He was mildly interested in footbag but it was just an annoying disruption because he was more interested in talking about random stuff.
Anyways, yesterday I finally got a chance to play in the squash court which is soo much better! The surface is great and there are no distractions.
I’ve gained about 10lbs in muscle since I started training again about a year ago. I had my highest weigh in ever the other day. Pretty stoked.
Gyro toe stuff is a new concept that kinda clicked recently. It feels so cool!

I’m hitting tons of new links and combos and everything just feels so styley. The players who inspire me in different ways always come to mind when I play. Styles I have been inspired by this week include outsider, Johnny, Camille, Boats and Hania.
Everything feels like it’s really coming together with my game. I have a pretty solid game plan for training over the next several months. I’m very optimistic about where I will be when worlds comes around again.
Looks like I’m going to NYC this New Years! This also has me motivated to keep practicing. I can’t wait to go back and explore the city some more and see everybody again! There seems like a good amount of interest which I’m pumped about.

New Years 2014 in NYC
Just got back from NYC. What a crazy awesome few days!!
Sunday
Woke up bright and early and left the house at 7:45 en route to Toronto. The highway was super empty and I made good time, arriving in Toronto by 8:30 to obtain Alex Venis. Then we were back on the road to London to meet up with Zach Forth. I was driving my dad’s HHR which is really nice to drive in, and really easy to speed in. I didn't realise I was going so fast and we got pulled over. The cop was pretty nice about it and dropped the ticket down to $95 so no big deal.
We arrived at Zach's place around 10:30, stopped at Alex’s place in London to grab a few things and were on our way in Zach's car by noon. Crossing the border was real slow and we had a wait of about two hours. We continued towards NYC with one or two minor detours. It was somewhat slow going since Zach is a pretty cautious driver and we hit a bunch of different weather throughout our journey – rain, snow, ice, and finally clear skies. We managed to have pretty good conversations most of the way and didn't get on each others nerves too much. Alex had a bunch of cool music on his iPod and we also listened to the Miley Cyrus CD (lol) and some Zelda soundtracks.
After a very long car ride we made it to New Jersey where we left the car at a parking garage and headed to Newark Penn Station to take the train into the city. I had printouts of three different sets of transit directions to Matt Cross’s place from google maps (we didn't end up taking any of these routes haha).
There was some confusion at the train station and we ended up rushing to get on a train that we didn't even intend to take en route to the world trade centre. Everyone on the train was completely silent except the three of us. Between rushing to buy tickets and the train confusion we were very loud and I may have had a slight laughing fit. I’m pretty sure the other passengers thought we were nuts.
Arriving in Manhattan we got on a subway we thought we ought to be on. I failed to get good directions to where we were going and I didn't even know what borough in Brooklyn we were headed towards- I only had the address. Apparently Brooklyn is massive.
On the subway Alex was looking at the subway map trying to determine where we were supposed to be going. Some locals attempted to help and were shocked that none of us had data on our phones (how could we possibly survive?).
Alex began a sentence with “I reckon..” and one of the New Yorkers seemed to be shocked by the word for some reason “did you really just say ‘I reckon’?” His response was classic “Yeah it means the same thing as ‘I think’ but with more letters”.
The locals tried to help us but gave us some bad information and we ended up just taking a cab. The cab driver didn’t know where it was but we were able to find the address on his GPS. Luckily cabs in NYC are much cheaper than here in Canada.
Finally we arrived at Matt's place just after midnight. It had been a long day but it sure wasn't over yet. We hung out for a little bit and then headed back out. The four of us took the subway back to a bar in Manhattan to catch a sweet funk show. The subways in New York are very dirty. Alex spent a great deal of time studying the NYC subway map while we were waiting for the train. We were late but luckily the show went until 4am. It was a really groovy awesome concert with cool light effects.
Monday
The four of us grabbed some breakfast at a local restaurant and then headed back to Matt’s. The footbag session wasn't until four and Matt had a rehearsal with his band before that. Alex and Zach passed out for a while and I chilled out and enjoyed a sweet private show. The music was really good.
Around three we headed out and took the subway to the shred location – a dance studio in Manhattan. Drew, boats, Jon, Bruce and Ben came out to play. I hadn't played in about two weeks and was a little rusty but had a decent session nonetheless. Boats impressed me with a number of really neat runs. Such a unique style. It was awesome to see the NYFA crew and play footbag with them again. I really enjoy the fact that this club does a lot of uncommon and bizarre tricks and concepts. I saw a lot of really cool tricks and had a great time.
After the session Matt wanted to go uptown to see a show. Alex, Zach, Matt and I split up with the rest of the crew who wanted to get food. I kind of regretted this because I really wanted to hang out with everyone and I was afraid we wouldn't get to meet back up that night. The show was at the top of some swanky hotel and we weren't really dressed for the occasion. On top of that there was nowhere to sit and I just sort of felt out of place. We left after a couple drinks to catch a country show at another bar somewhere in Manhattan I think.
When we arrived I saw Drew and David sitting at a table and pretty much attacked them with a hug.
Ben also came by for a while with his girl Ricki. I was really happy that we got to meet back up with them. We sat and had a bunch of drinks and talked shit and it was really a lot of fun.
The music was good and the bar had some cool vintage porn covered in graffiti in the washroom.
We went back to Matt's and hung out with his room mate Amos and Friend Isaac. Both super rad people.
Tuesday – New Years Eve!
The session was scheduled for 1 pm and we were running a little late. We didn't make it until maybe 1:20 and unfortunately Drew was only able to schedule the space until 3 that day. I was pretty sore from the day before and didn't feel like I was getting warmed up until it was almost over. Jon was killing it with a bunch of super rad strings. Both Drew and Alex hurt themselves the day before and couldn't play which kinda sucked.

After the session we went back to Matt's to relax a bit and figure out what we would do for New Years Eve. There was supposed to be a crazy rave thing called the Unicorn Meet that had some cool light exhibits and stuff. This sounded awesome so we decided to drop the $80 each for tickets.
Alex got an intro guitar lesson.
Around 8 we headed over to Bruce’s place to meet up him, David and Drew. Bruce has a rad condo with the most epic entrance. So fancy.
We had some drinks and chilled out and I felt like I was going to melt into the floor at one point. Drew received an email on his phone that the Unicorn meet had apparently been cancelled! They failed to get some “permits” from the city or something to that effect. This was a little disappointing but I knew it would be an awesome night regardless.
Matt had a lead on some other party in Brooklyn so we decided to hit that up instead. I said goodbye to David because he had some other plans. The rest of us headed out.
We arrived at a place that just looked like some big warehouse but you could hear that partying was happening within.
We went into a building with a bunch of swanky loft apartments. You could tell parties were happening within several of them. The one we were planning on going to was asking for a $20 cover but there wasn't even that many people inside and Matt ended up talking them down to a much more reasonable $5. He had a musician friend that lived in another loft a few doors down that we were able to chill at and there was also a pretty awesome dance party across from that. We spent the night bouncing between these three unique awesome places. I met a bunch of really cool and unique people.
Midnight came and went and I was so happy to be able to ring in the new year with these great people.
We danced for hours. Alex just ripped up the dance floor. At some point Bruce left and I didn’t get to say goodbye but he called Drew so I got to talk to him on the phone briefly.
By around 3 Matt and Zach were ready to leave but Alex and I didn't want to yet so we split up. We lost Drew at some point and I was worried that he left so Alex and I went looking for him. We found him at one of the parties just rippin' it up on the dance floor. Awesome.
The three of us continued to party and dance and smoke and meet cool people until about 6 am.
Amos offered us a ride back but then disappeared when I went to grab Drew. We ended up walking back with Isaac. It was a little chilly but not terrible.
Best New Years ever.
The next morning Alex and I managed to peel ourselves out of bed by about noon. It was time to head home. We our goodbyes to Matt and Amos and headed to the subway. Our ride back was quite a lot smoother and we made pretty decent time. There was no wait at the Canadian bored and we finally made it back to London by about 1 am. There was no way I was driving back to Oshawa so we said our goodbyes to Zach and headed over to Alex's London place to sleep. Zach was nice enough to give us some food to eat the next morning.
Thursday
We slept pretty late. Alex made scrambled eggs and toast and we headed out around 2:30. It had been snowing and the roads were pretty bad. I guess there were a bunch of accidents or something because traffic was brutal. Alex is the best so I didn't really mind being stuck in traffic with him. He has done a lot of travelling recently and had some cool stories about it. This trip has really fueled my desire to travel more. I'm looking forward to visiting some more footbag cities with him in the near future.
After about four hours of stop and go traffic I dropped him Alex off in Toronto and finally made it home by about 8pm.
Awesome trip is awesome. New York is cool. NYFA is rad. Yay footbag!

FAT session today!!
Arrived on time at Bahen at 1pm. Didn't expect to see anyone yet due to my punctuality however I was happy to be greeted by Erik. Within minutes Jorden also arrived. It's been a while since I saw him so I was stoked that he could make it. We warmed up and had a decent three man shred for a while. Erik was really tearin' it up
Before long Alex arrived and then Adam. This was a pleasant surprise since he said he was working today. Eventually Camille also made it. Solid six man impromptu Toronto sesh! So unexpectedly awesome!
I played one on one with Jordan a bunch which was fun. Got some really good tips for Grifter (coming soon..) and some other concepts.
After I while I kinda burned out on shred and just chilled and watched the others play. I fucking love these people. So great.
Camille, Alex and I got some fresh air and when we returned I found my second wind. More footbag was played and I got real sweaty which is always a sign of a good session. I noticed some things about my game that need work so I will fix those.
Jorden sold me four nice stally juggling balls. Maybe I will start juggling a little.
It was nice that no one had to leave super early so the session didn't feel rushed. Afterwards I went to Starbucks with Erik and Jorden to test out Jorden's board game prototype. It's actually pretty fun. Would play again.

I had a good squash court session on Tuesday. Played for about an hour and spent half that just drilling Grifter. I know what I need to do now it’s just a matter of teaching my legs the movement. Getting closer but still need some work. Jorden gave me some really helpful tips and I’ve been focused on applying those to my game.
Yesterday I played near the weight room. It was extra high traffic due to New Years resolutions and whatnot so I couldn’t really drill hard stuff. I just worked on some fun runs and easier concepts. I got tons of positive feedback from passers-by. Lots of comments like “That’s crazy!” etc. which was cool. I still much prefer the privacy of the squash court but playing in public makes for a very different type of session which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
Going to Grand Rapids Michigan this weekend for a small footbag event! Really stoked for this since it’s probably the last real trip I will be able to make this semester. Aside from the other Canadians I’m travelling with Anton will be the only player there I know. It’s always cool to meet new footbaggers and I know some of them have never been to an event so I am extra stoked for them. It’s great to meet noobs that are stoked to get good at footbag and help them get even more pumped.

It was awesome seeing you the other day let’s play more footbag together I had a good squash court session on Tuesday. Played for about an hour and spent half that just drilling Grifter. I know what I need to do now it’s just a matter of teaching my legs the movement. Getting closer but still need some work. Jorden gave me some really helpful tips and I’ve been focused on applying those to my game.
Yesterday I played near the weight room. It was extra high traffic due to New Years resolutions and whatnot so I couldn’t really drill hard stuff. I just worked on some fun runs and easier concepts. I got tons of positive feedback from passers-by. Lots of comments like “That’s crazy!” etc. which was cool. I still much prefer the privacy of the squash court but playing in public makes for a very different type of session which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
Going to Grand Rapids Michigan this weekend for a small footbag event! Really stoked for this since it’s probably the last real trip I will be able to make this semester. Aside from the other Canadians I’m travelling with Anton will be the only player there I know. It’s always cool to meet new footbaggers and I know some of them have never been to an event so I am extra stoked for them. It’s great to meet noobs that are stoked to get good at footbag and help them get even more pumped.
