Thanks blokes! We are back home with the baby now, so February sessions have been limited, to zero :(

It's a pretty steep learning curve this time, but we are figuring things out. People on Facebook say he looks like an athlete for the future, with good footbag legs...

I would love to see a Worlds in New York some day, maybe one day when I could go. I think the first step is it would need a strong organising committee. So that would mean more than one person...

I responded to Ted's post in the Events section, under the title of "this sport is becoming a joke". Of course this was probably a waste of internet breath, however there were some key thoughts I wanted to get down and hopefully they came through in that.
Ted - the big question is who are you fighting? Who is fighting with you. Nothing can be done with a one-man army. Of course footbag leaves a lot to be desired in terms of professionalism, however the IFPA (despite not being recognised by the IOC as an international body, which greatly affects chances of funding at the national level (from sports ministries, but not from other orgs such as culture, youth, health, etc) is one of the key indicators of professionalism.

Something interesting is in that a lot of sports, Worlds doesn't happen every year. The non profit status part doesn't make any sense either. Being registered as a 501(c)3 in the US opens any organisation up to a huge range of possibilities, which are not being exploited, for a variety of reasons, but mainly in the lack of coordinated organisation in the US (huge distances, small amount of people), but keeping that maintained gives more potential to the travelling teams you mentioned.

The fundraising concepts are quite simple. A professionally run event will attract sponsors, or even better these links will already be in existence. In regards to the thread title, I don't think the sport is becoming a joke. A lot of the things you mentioned will be up and running in the coming months.

While we're talking of stepping up, how much of your own money are you planning to put into these kind of projects? I also disagree that the sport's eggs are in one basket. Worlds should be the premiere event, but I don't think it really was last year. There are events all over the world, people are going on TV practically every week somewhere.

Of course, the venue for Worlds should be known by now, for the simple fact that almost everybody is an amateur, and needs to take time off work, and get the flights while they're cheaper. However, there's still about 6 months to go, and if anyone is planning on going, they should have a good chunk of money saved up to prepare for all that (or a good credit card limit).

There are many of us working on interesting footbag projects with great potential. If they don't work out - no need to blame the whole world and put them offside for the next project.

Last question - would Worlds have been in the New York Times if it was in New York this year? I have my doubts.
Here is one mention of footbag in the NYT, from 1984 -http://www.nytimes.com/1984/02/12/us/fl ... ampus.html - the year I was born..."Floppy Little Footbag is Big Game on Campus". There is also a mention of "Footbag Basics Workout" (1987), but no information there. And here is an article about Rod Laver that Ken posted on this very forum five years ago. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/31/sport ... ports&_r=0

Speaking of tennis, Chile has been sucking badly in the Davis Cup. They were up against Barbados, who had one player ranked about 450 (Chile's were between 289 and about 400), the next guy from Barbados had a doubles ranking of >1000, and the next two guys were unranked. The same ranking as you and me! Chile won the first game, but it all fell apart from there and not only did they let Barbados in with a chance, they lost the series. It was 3-2 in the end, but they had already lost it after the fourth match. And this is in the "Americas Zone Group II". Chile dropped to this after they lost to Dominican Republic (who were also all ranked lower than the Chilean players). They had to stay in that playoff because they lost to Ecuador, the rankings were pretty similar there. Barbados, on the other hand, won the playoff to stay in Group II against Puerto Rico. So now Chile will play Paraguay here in April, in order to stay in the group.

There's something people say a lot about Chilean sports, particularly non footballing ones - "Estamos en la B". Which is like saying "we're in reserve grade". It will be much worse than that if they drop down to the Group III - which is the very bottom of the pile. Speaking of sports, a few of us went to the hockey last week. Chile vs Argentina. It was a four nations tournament, pretty good quality teams, some goals and a reasonable crowd, as well as free entry.

One thing more to say on potential funding for footbag. This rapid explosion of "good deeds for small sports" from the "Dogecoin Foundation". Not only the Jamaican Bobsled Team, but now some Indian competitors, who have to compete under the Olympic flag because their Olympic Committee is banned by the IOC. If you think our sport is a joke...

I personally think it's cooler to be funded by Dogecoin than real money.

I would probably prefer real money...however the whole Dogecoin story keeps gathering momentum. http://sportslashlife.com/dogecoin-resc ... -athletes/

and when you have a bajillion "meme monies", it seems there will be someone to make an exchange for the cold hard stuff. Had a pretty good session today. First time out after we arrive home from the hospital. Spent quite a lot of time yesterday not being asleep. Had a good chat with Caroline at about 3am. That was good, as it's not so easy to connect with the time difference and the crazy schedules.

Hit a couple of decent runs and some good single tricks. I was working a bit with nuclear sets, I was also getting a bit closer to flip vortex, which is something I have always had a lot of trouble with. I also thought I had a look at some tricks, but on reviewing them on the video it seems they were just a bit more than a turn and a toe stall...

I'm going to be on the radio this evening. One hour from now (9pm in Chile). we have a new show on www.radiosport.cl in English, Radio Sport Weekly.

I made a comment earlier about "how do post in a footblog". At the beginning I was beginning to take the piss, but overall the below is what this blog has consisted of at most stages.
Just post about girlfriend troubles, "the future of footbag", post when you're drunk at 3am, post about tournaments that you're not going to go do but think it would be nice to go to anyway, post about a couple of new tricks you hit, post some cool drawings, couple of videos of your game and anything you want (you should also make the "title" of the blog something about you, seeing there's about 10 people with *PSU* blogs).

It's best to have a mix between your actual life and your footbag life. Ken Somolinos probably has the best blog on here on Modified, if not purely for the fact that it has been running consistently for so long, but also mixes stories from the life with hopes and dreams for footbag and plenty of videos.
I saw Don Anz recently celebrated 10 years of being on Modified. I just noticed that I had started my blog in 2005. People sometimes ask me how long I have been playing for. In these days I prefer to give an answer such as "a fair while", "many years", this kind of thing.

If you want an exact quantification, the best measure is from when I first started playing hack. That would have been early in the school year in 1997. I would say probably in April. It wasn't something that was around immediately. So that was 17 years ago. But I don't really want to say to people "oh yeah, I've been playing for seventeen years". In sports like tennis, nobody asks how long you've been playing for - particularly for a social hit. They ask "can you play". If you want to play in a serious tournament, they'll ask you who you've beaten.

Something that footbag lacks is a rigorous qualification system. Well, the key question is, for what...

I have been playing a couple of games of Ultimate Frisbee lately. They have a new generation of people in the Start-Up Chile environment, but it's actually some of the earlier people who are into it. We played today and one bloke, well he tried to tackle me (it's not rugby league, mate), and he ended up in a spiky bush. So much for non contact. I still don't really get why he was trying to tackle me. It's one thing to run a line, a decoy, or make a block, but to give a gridiron style nudge is not really necessary.

Anyway, I played quite badly and once I joined in the match our team seemed to be losing consistently. We're going to start to play more often though.

Baby is going pretty good. He was a bit underweight, but he's starting to add some more kilos, which is good news.

That's crazy to think about though, that I have been involved with kicking this ball around for more than half of my life. It's funny to think as well, if someone said "were you playing seriously". What I was seriously into, for many years, was consecutive kicks. In reality that was probably a time when it was still considered as something, but dwindling.

I was just having a look at the era I was getting into it, and I am assuming that "speed consecutives" were 5 minute consecs, there were 8 people in 2000 and 5 people in 2001. They only real competition I have been in for consecs (judges, rules, etc), I got 496 and most impressively, behind me in the list were people like Lynton and some of the guys from NZ, as well as Lotus, who thought he had that comp in the bag, but this young upstart came along from nowhere with a crochet hacky sack...

I was just having a look at the results, I was hoping to see a full list of competitors (who didn't care at all), but it only shows the top 3. Anyway, a 14 year old Dan Ednie hit dimwalk>pdx mirage>dimwalk to take third in the Sick 3.

Something that I hit not long ago, which I may have hit before, but not with great confidence, was phoenix>pdx mirage rpt. Nothing really special, but definitely something to tick off the list.

More people are popping by to the www.sportslashlife.com website. We're going to have a couple of cool promotions coming up soon, some to do with footbag, some more focused on Chile. We've done a small amount of coverage on the Chileans at the Winter Olympics, but this has been picked up on some of the different Wikipedia pages, which brings them around to us, which is good.

I know I mentioned Ken very early in the piece, so that should make him comment... but very interested in the basketball player Dante Exum. Tipped to go straight out of Australia to be a top 5 draft pick. He has an AIS scholarship behind him and a couple of cameos on the senior national team, but I think you really want a bit of time in the college leagues before going into the NBA.

I guess though if there's millions of dollars on offer, why not take it while it's there...

Imagine if they had a draft pick for footbag players, and a young Vasek or Honza would be selected to go to X College due to their excellent potential for the future...that could be something too...

If there wasn't enough footbag mention in my previous post, here is a quick video from some recent sessions.

Don't know if there's anything really outstanding there, but a few interesting tricks. A small bit of freestyle football thrown in there too.

Went to a good freestyle football event yesterday. I was playing reasonably well with both footbag and the bigger ball. They had an impromptu comp for fs football, there were 8 of us in it, I went through the first round, so I went into the "semifinal". It was battle format, and I probably lucked out with my first opposition, he was a young guy I hadn't met before.

But my first round of the three in the battle, I just played it quite safe, and didn't drop at all. Of course that puts the pressure on. On the final round I tried some "lowers" and I'm not sure if the crowd were laughing with me or at me (probably a mixture). It was fun going out there though. The main event was a "PannaKO", which is done by a group called StreetMastersChile. There are also some guys doing "F3 Chile", working on building up the freestyle football. So I'm planning to do some more stuff with those guys.

I gave a little footbag demo for the show. It wasn't planned, nor did I really know the song, but it went ok. Couple of drops. It was a nice plaza to play in. Renca is a bit of a sketchy area, but I'm sure Eduardo Vargas kicked a ball around more than once in that very plaza. Nice goal for him in Valencia. Funny that old mate Pizzi took Santiago Morning into the B just five years ago here, now he's beating Barcelona. Another bloke who dragged a team down to the B has the last name Pellegrini (U de Chile, 1988).

In some less good news, Francisca's mum has been in hospital for a number of days, in the intensive care. Things seem to be getting worse and it seems that she could die. That has come as a great shock, as she was right there with us when the baby was born, and that was just over a week ago. So of course that makes for a stressful situation. I think everyone was expecting that things would pick up, but Francisca just rushed off to the hospital, so I am looking after the Nicolas. He is being pretty well behaved so far.

That could have a great influence on our next steps. Of course having the mother around is best for when you have a new baby. My parents are coming out in two weeks time, so it will be really good to see them, and for them to meet their first grandson.

Terrible news, I'm sorry to hear that.

As for the video at the event, people seemed excited to see it! Good show!

You know what I hit today. Atomsmasher b2b. That's something I haven't been able to hit for far too long, but today was the day. So that was good. Have been starting to hit double spinning clippers pretty regularly midrun. And I mean deep into the string, say in a 20 contact run, to hit on trick number 12 or so. I was play around with some tricks involving kick>dex>kick. I did clipper kick reverse swirl (with a clipper kick at the end).

I got invited to another freestyle football event, in another sketchy area. I'm sure I will go and I'm sure it will be good. That's on March 8, which is also the first day of the South American Games. Actually, no it's not, that begins the day before.

I went to an event yesterday, with some of the athletes. Because there's not so much support, the athletes have created their own organisation (kind of like in footbag...). Here's an interview I did with Caterin Bravo, who is an Olympic fencer. http://sportslashlife.com/interview-caterin-bravo/

We will be unveiling a couple of projects in the very near future. One should see some pretty impressive fearless videos (eg 25+) seeing the light of day. Another should see the debut of Gdansk as *the* location for footbag tournaments, and there are a few other little big things in between.

At the end of May, they will do the feria del futbol again, just before the World Cup. I was talking with the organiser at the event yesterday and said I want to do a footbag competition there, he said, no problem. I would like to to a good event there. Maybe it could be the 2013 South American Championships...ha ha ha... or maybe it could be this year's event, for real. I haven't heard anything about plans for this year.

But hey, nobody still knows anything about Worlds, so maybe it's still too early to tell.

when's this meter of yours going to start ticking? It seems to have been trapped at 1/100 for quite some time.

In follow up to other news mentioned in this blog, Francisca's mum didn't make it through. She passed away on Sunday and the funeral was today. Heavy days emotionally. Now that the funeral and everything is done with, hopefully I can get a bit of focus. I am working on doing an app for the South American Games, which are only a couple of weeks away, which nobody knows anything about. I think an app would be a useful tool. I was going to stay up and work on it a little tonight, but my efforts are just not going to be useful.

Tired, and stressed also.

In less stressful news, consider this a semi-official announcement. Sport/Life will present a "Fearless Challenge" in the coming days. It will run for the month between February 25 and March 25. We have selected a talented bunch of characters, who will be looking to get >25 unique fearless on video. I would say all of them will probably get it, so that should be a bunch of impressive new videos.

The winners (first to 25 and the one with the most at the end of the month) will each get $100. There are also some footbag goods that will go out, with Planetfootbag and Fourkast supporting so far. Let me know if you want to add anything to that. Jay Boychuk will be the judge, no xdex etc.

Hopefully in the spirit of this competition, I can increased my fearless record from 3...

Paris sounds like the place for Worlds, but you would definitely think by now it's time for a confirmation. Interesting discussion on Cassy's blog about Honza's new video. MOre on that another time.

Jeremy might know something I don't but I think it won't be in Paris but in France.
And agreed about confirmation. If nothing happens soon I might go Ted Fritsch on their asses.

Sweet, I look forward to this. I wonder who the challengers are...I'm guessing Aleksi, Anz, Clavens, and Penske. Back in the day I would have put Norek, Jorden, Felix and Vasek in there too. I bet Landes could get around 20 even without x-dex...I hope he participates. If I ever get a clean nemesis out of the way, I may try and re-set my fearless record too. Fearless can be such a pain in the butt though.

Sorry for your loss Daniel.

On worlds, my understanding is that Paris is the only city with a current bid for worlds but it hasn't been finalised because they need local government approval for the main venue, and this hasn't occurred yet, although they are working on lining up backup venues too. I would be over 95% confident it will go there. Paris was a backup after the debacle of the NY "bid," but there are some super organisers working on it, so it's hard to imagine it not being successful. I'm not aware of any proposals outside of Paris.

And I am sure it will be blast for everybody attending. Recommendated!

From what I have heard/read, there were proposals from Caracas and New York. Venezuela was out of the running for security concerns early on, but apparently they were really pushing for an answer and that gave them problems. Those security concerns have really ramped up in recent days, it's the main item on the news here in each day.

That answer on municipal approval makes sense. They have organised big events for both net and freestyle for a long time, so it should be a good event. Hopefully what we get going in Europe in the next couple of months will build interest in the sport, maybe reawaken some "sleeping giants".

As for the fearless challenges, Ken - your first four are all in, so is Landes. Jay has the final details, but there are a couple more. Not sure about Mathias Blau - wow, he's getting really good.

I remember kicking with him in Vienna after Worlds, and he said that all the other Danish players were really annoyed because he never practiced but then he won the Danish events. Seems to show what a bit of training can do!

As for me going to Worlds, highly unlikely. Unfortunately worlds doesn't fall while I'm in this Start-Up Chile program. Then I would go for sure. But once this ends, then it's back to wondering what to do. A move back to Australia could be on the cards. Tough to know what to do now. Something will sort itself out.

He has done 10+ now. But said he was sure he could do a lot more if he practiced it.
I told him about the project and said he should get in touch with Jay. I think he will.

This is so true! I've been buggin him about it for years. Even though I am sure he has always been playing more than me. His US trip and living in Berlin definitely made him level up.

He is moving to Copenhagen in the coming months. Super excited about that. Two indoor practices a week, 10+ active players annd a world class player in the mix. Gonna be a great footbag summer in Copenhagen.

Sorry for the high jack. I am just as said super excited. :)

Good to be hijacked, this shows people are reading the blog. You never know what will be on the cards though. I have to see what happens with the Start Up Chile program, with the baby, with the future, but I feel a trip to Europe could be worthwhile during my time in the program. Let's see how the next couple of weeks pan out first.

If you want to know some more about the European Footbag Tour, I have written already a little about my eventual hopes and dreams, but I think this is a great start.

For now you can read here - http://sportslashlife.com/sportlife-pre ... tbag-tour/ but later I will talk a little bit about what I want to do.

I am changing a little the focus of my project, to bring it more around to the "business" side of things, rather than a "project". We have a friend coming for lunch, so I won't spend long writing, but there are three key elements.

1 - Stadium tours (particularly for football matches, but for any sport)
2- Organising travel for athletes (a part of this will be looking for sponsors to reduce the cost of the travel)
3 - Organising tours such as this one. I've been in touch with the people behind the World Bodyboarding Tour and I'm hoping that we can do something together - the first event is at Pipeline, but then the next two are in Chile. My thoughts for 2015 are the Asian Cup in Australia, Copa America (Chile), Under 17 World Cup (Chile), as well as to do something around the Homeless World Cup, which is October 2014 in Chile. I would like to do something in North America too, though it's probably best to have someone else doing everything, then just add a logo in support.

The basic idea of the whole thing is it can be presented to a sponsor as something that can just be rolled out at any stage. Let's see how that goes.

Hey Dan, my condolences for your family loss.

Just saw the Euro Tour on Facebook. Sounds awesome man! Hope that goes well, can't wait to see footage and hopefully we pick up a decent following of new players with that.

And props on Atomsmasher b2b, that's a great milestone.
