I agree with a lot of what has been said here. Funny enough, this conversation came up when I was filming our trailer for Jamps. To me, I think that video lacks a clear focus or purpose ( the first time I watched it, I looked at the dancing ladies and was unimpressed by the footbag, kinda found it silly )

Gotta give him props for going the distance and making something professional though, I find footbag to be difficult to make appealing to the masses and it's easy to criticize a failure when we haven't tried to produce videos at that level ourselves. Teaching the girls footbag tricks is one thing, filming them hitting them is a whole 'nother story - how long does it take for you to hit a sick 3 on film? Probably a full session. For someone new to footbag, a few toe/clipper stalls are the equivalent to your sick 3. Add choreography and a moving camera and the time needed for the shot makes it logical to cut it in favor of simpler clips in the storyboarding phase. Its something I learned filming our trailer.

Overall a good discussion, glad you put your opinion out here. Serves as a good reminder for those of us who aspire to make interesting footbag videos.

Went to Toronto last night to get some drinks with friends from school and see a show at the Horseshoe tavern.

My friends had to get back to Oshawa around midnight and I walked down the street to meet up with Alex and a couple of his friends. We stayed until last call and made the entirely-too-long journey to his parents place in the north end.

One of my favourite parts about doing stuff with Alex is his tendency to strike up conversations with random strangers. Most people take really well to him – he’s pretty likeable. So we were on the bus and Alex was razzing the guy next to him about kinda drifting off. He didn’t say anything offensive just was like “you’re gonna miss your stop.. where you going? Oh Steeles, you got a while you might as well go back to sleep” etc. The guy didn’t really seem bothered by it however this other guy sitting across from them spoke up and started talking some shit to Alex and threating to punch his face in. There was some exchange and this guy was just really angry and out of hand for no reason. I spoke up when the guy started threatening Alex and was basically just like “the other 15 people watching this exchange aren’t going to let you get away with that”. And the guy just LOST IT on me. Started yelling some shit at me and called me a WENCH. That was a first. I knew he was probably all talk but I wasn’t prepared to take any risks. After telling him to go fuck himself I proceeded to move to the front of the bus. Not really sure what happened between Alex and the crazy guy for the remainder of the bus ride. The bus stopped and everyone had to get off at the same time. I got off first and waited, staring down crazy guy as he got off. He didn’t do anything. Once the bus had emptied the sleepy guy was just like “yeah no worries man that guy was fucked” or something to that effect. Such a crazy random situation.

On the walk to Alex’s we grabbed some shawarma and finally passed out around 4. Waking Saturday morning was rough and we had to get up early cause the cleaning lady was coming. Alex and I hung out all morning and had some really good conversation about footbag, school and life.

Alex left his lavers in London so he didn’t come out to the footbag session. I was still pretty hurtin’ from the night before when I made the journey downtown. I grabbed some starbucks and met up with Erik who I knew would be waiting at Bahen. I can always count on him not to bail. So reliable. I arrived shortly after 2 and sat and talked with him and ate my lunch until nearly 3 when Adam finally arrived. Honestly I was kind of grateful we didn’t start playing right away because I was still trying to recover.

Everyone else bailed on the session so it was just the three of us. I’m so lucky to get to play with these guys but I regretted that I couldn’t fully appreciate it today. My head hurt too much to fully comprehend the tricks they were hitting. I played horribly but I still had a good time and actually felt way better by the end of the session. There was some compsci orientation happening in the U of T building we play in so there were a lot more people around than usual. On the plus side I scored some melon and grapefruit when they were cleaning up the snacks. Asking for things definitely pays off.

Erik suggested I take an alternate route to get home since part of the subway line wasn’t running. He ended up staying downtown but I took the subway eastward with Adam. We had a nice chat along the way until it was time to say goodbye. The nice thing about saying bye to these guys is it’s easy cause I know I’ll see them again in a week or two :)

I got off at Main street and asked a cute guy for directions to the Danforth GO station. Conveniently enough there was a shawarma place on the way which I stopped at for some grub. This made me quite happy. Even better than that though was when I got to the GO station I learned that the Ukrainian leader was taken out of power and his mansion taken over by protesters. So much win.

I enjoyed taking an alternate route. It was a nice change of scenery to travel through a part of Toronto I don’t generally frequent.

No better cure for a hangover than to sweat it out through footbag (that, or bacon...)

Was the photo of the old mate singing karaoke in the ex-president's house real? That's a way to "stick it to the man"...

Absolutely. I love bacon almost as much as footbag.

I'm so sick of being disappointed by guys.

Shout out to all the footbag boys who are actually considerate and awesome. If I can count on anyone it's you guys.

I wonder which one of you I will end up with..

I played for 30 minutes both yesterday and today. Yesterday I was feeling a little rusty and was having trouble breaking 15 contacts. My most notable strong was 30 contacts tiltless with both xbdy Rakes, both DLOs and Atomsmasher on the 27th contact. Felt good for my first solo session in weeks.

This morning was a pretty good session, I felt less rusty. My ankle feels good as long as I keep it to toe stuff. It's pretty boring but it is forcing me to work on my toe tiltless which isn't such a bad thing.

55 toe tiltless> handcatch
Tiltless run with both rakes, both symp Mirages, both Eggs, and both DLOs ending in handcatch.

I was hoping to match the progress I made last winter. Being injured has sort of thrown a wrench in that plan which is a little disappointing. I guess I’m probably not going to make it to worlds anyways. I just need to make sure I'm healed up in time for event season :)

Today was my third solo session in a row :)

Still exclusively toe shred. My injury hasn't been bothering me lately. As long as I can avoid agitating it with my clumsiness I am hopeful that I will be able to clipper by the time the PSU event rolls around.

My toe tiltless is definitely getting stronger. So are my DLOs, Eggbeaters, Gyro toes, and Rakes. That’s the majority of what I feel comfortable working on unfortunately. Most sets are sketchy so I avoid them. Except atomic which has made a little progress.

Starting to feel the event withdrawal. Good thing the cold weather is starting to ease up and I have PSU jam to look forward to :D

So stoked for PSU!

I have been thinking a lot about injury recently. I came to the conclusion that I'm really glad I got injured. Sounds stupid/weird, but it showed me how to use proper form and to only work the basics at first. It also gave me time to reflect on my game, and another thing I did during my time off was watch lots of videos in slow motion. If I never got injured, I would probably still have awful form and whatnot. Maybe you'll come to a similar conclusion? Sounds like it is really benefitting your toe game, so that's a plus. Some cross training might help you too. Strengthen lower and upper. I didn't believe it, but strengthening your upper body takes stress off of your lower body and helps with impact absorption.

What exactly was your injury? I remember it was at Michigan doing Grifters (?), but what exactly did you injure?

Thanks Erik! I have actually been dabbling in toe ducking a little! Made some progress on that front.

And you're right Nick, it has definitely forced me to take a step back and focus on the basics which isn't the worst thing ever.

I have actually been doing quite a bit of cross training. These days my workouts entail a 30-40 minute session followed by a good deal of stretching in the weight room at school. I usually finish off by working on one or two other concepts. It's nice to have definition in parts of my body other than the legs ;)

The muscle on the outside of my left ankle is strained. Not sure how to explain it but it is definitely a key muscle used in clipper crank. The injury happened when I landed on the inside of my ankle with my other foot and over extended it.

Sessioned this evening. No highlights really. Getting bored with my restricted game. The ankle is getting better but I'm not willing to test it yet.

A girl approached me wanting to try. She was very persistent - must have picked that bag back up at least 50 times. Seemed pretty interested in learning :) I've mentioned before that teaching noobs is far from a priority however when it comes to a girl that is genuinely interested it's a different story. She is fit and has the right body type so I'm cautiously optimistic. I wish I had a bag to give her..

Looking forward to the FAT session this weekend. I need to make up for my lacklustre shred at the last sesh :D

Is it summer yet?

Session with Adam and Erik yesterday!

I got to Toronto early and wandered around Kensington market for a while before the session. That was pretty fun. It was chilly out though.

They were hitting crazy big shit which was cool. I had a couple good runs but overall I didn't play great. It was fun anyways.

LOL thanks Paul :P

I had a really good, productive day!

Got a bunch done at school and then had a pretty good solo session. Lots of 15-20 contact toe runs. I tested my clipper a bit and was able to hit some Infinities and even Osis without pain so that’s promising. I’m still going to lay off it at least until Jamps. Which I’m STOKED for by the way! Looks to be an amazing turnout! I’m pumped for the t-shirts since I was able to purchase my own (womens) shirts on ebay to get the design printed on. It will be cool to have some footbag shirts that I will actually wear because they fit :D

About half an hour after my session I was on my way to lab to set up a reaction to run overnight. Out of the blue Johnny Suderman called me! Such a nice surprise :D We talked about plans for PSU, the shoes he’s working on with Tom and other things. Randomly hearing from Johnny totally made my day.

I am getting really excited for Jamps as well! Getting our first shirt printed tomorrow to see how the quality is. The number of people coming is really cool - sure it complicates organization, but it also makes events awesome! Can't wait to kick with everyone again, and see the inspiration hit all of our intermediate/newb players when they see how awesome it is to host a footbag jam with high caliber players in attendance. In the meantime, I have been spending my free time making prizes - here is what first place Open Circle gets:

It's a modest, hand made prize, but it should be something nice for someone to take home. Can't wait for Jamps! :D

Don't kid yourself - that is a badass 'trophy'. It makes me jealous I'm not going :) Having that on my wall 15 years from now and having some established gentleman, likely with a monocle, stroll through my home waiting for an adult, "You should merge your company with mine" type of dinner, and having him pass by that would make the whole thing worth it.

Ivan, that plaque is amazing! And the bag matches my prize bag from ECFC :D

My money is on someone travelling in my car taking those home ;)

This blog page started off a little slow but I like the way it shaped up. Woo footbag :D
