Had a pretty good session last night. Read something that Cassy wrote in her blog, about bringing in bails sometimes. What I decided to do was mix some hard sets with a kick at the end. So double spinning inside kick and stepping ducking outside kick were a couple of fun ones. I was working a bit on some other unusual stuff, heel stalls, was trying to do cloud kick swirl, but that's still some way off.
Also hit something kind of cool, but not sure exactly what it is. If I am correct it is gyro dso, but I am probably not correct. I think I had one on film, so I will have to check that.
Also came really close to some 3 dex-3 dex combos. Had smog going really well and some close combos with various links. Dropped them all though.
I am giving a talk at a sports tourism conference today. Footbag demo included. I am really looking forward to it. The are is of great interest to me personally and professionally.

Yeah that's what I'm talkin' about!! Those are totally rad tricks. Stepping ducking outside kick sounds harder than Ripped warrior to me haha. I definitely think incorporating kicks into freestyle is something that should be done more. It changes up the flow of the run and brings in a new element. It also looks different to non-freestylers so they don't think we are doing the same thing repeatedly.

I really wanted to get something cool from the outside kick, but it's pretty hard to control. Have to practice more! Talk went pretty well, considering it was pretty long, and in Spanish, but it was great to be part of a "groundbreaking" event, and have footbag as a part of it.
I think the next move I try in that "series", or line of thinking, could be something like blurry drifter kick. I think that could be fun. I also think these kind of tricks are quite good for routines.

Today I went to the skatepark. I bought myself a skateboard for Christmas, but I haven't used it recently, possibly not even since the little bloke was born. So we were going to meet a friend at Parque Araucano as there is a reasonably new skatepark there, so along with the stroller and everything, I took this skateboard.
Was a bit of hassle, but it all kind of worked out. I'm not really that good at skateboarding, but not so bad either. The basics, such as rolling around, or dropping off things of a small height, are no problem, but doing different tricks and things is a new story.
I also played a bit of footbag there. It starting getting a bit crowded, but here is a quick run from there.

It was a great feeling to get back on the boots, which I haven't done the whole time in Chile, and probably hadn't done some months before leaving. They weren't a great fit, but I just felt extra confident, and I did some good tricks, probably surprised myself a bit. I think I lost a lot of style, but I had some fun there.
So we're going back to Australia in about 5 weeks. Many, many, many things to do. That's for sure. Hope I can get in plenty of footbag sessions before going, hoping also to be a part of the Feria del Futbol once again, but not sure when it's on exactly. Looks like it is the last weekend of May, which is the final weekend before we go, so we'll check things out with that.

I haven't been playing footbag enough lately. Not in proper sessions anyway. There just hasn't been the time, though the whole idea is to make the time.
I was kind of interested to see the new stuff from Jorden. I don't know about others, but I think a lot of the "rooted" ducking/spinning has been done by many people for a long time. I remember trying the over-the-shoulder stuff when I first started ducking also. Seemed a lot easier then...
Anyway, the reason why people of my "vintage" would have even thought about that kind of thing is because of the "no plant while" part of the jobs notation. I guess you just tried to mix and match (without any video evidence to back you up), from those different words on the screen, and eventually learn a new trick.
To be honest, I first though that "circle your foot around the bag" meant to hold onto the bag and move it in a circular motion. Seems ridiculous now, and there were plenty of videos of things like around the world, but they were large files and I had a small connection/download limit.
So the tour is coming to an end, the whole Start Up Chile is coming to an end. Like next week...On the surface you look at a $40,000 grant from the government and it sounds totally awesome, but right now I am stretching to make any of it sound good. I am about to finish, I am still going through the paperwork for my first payment, which means I have practically used every available peso or cent of credit etc.
They have said they will push through the payment, but I know of so many others in my same group who have waited so long to get the payment. That is something that makes it hard to "write home about".
Some quick tips for anyone who is interested in this program (or any other similar, just replace Chile with the country)
- come from your home country (even if you are in Chile, buy a flight back to your home country and then come again from there). Your flight to and from Chile is covered.
- apply as a team of 3 (you can't add new people after the application), and there are clean benefits to being a "team member" and not someone who is being "outsourced"
- Basically, you will have a lot more money to work with as "general expenses" rather than having to justify every small expense.
- Know exactly what you are going to do within the six months, especially with the money.
- Have someone doing the accounts. This is not really a full time job, but someone needs to be completely on top of it, and dealing with the people in the organisation.
- Have your rent sorted out, with contract, as soon as possible
- Be very clear with all obligations and expectations from each contract (each work should have a contract).
That is something that I haven't done completely. I could have handled a lot of things a lot better, but the reality is that something much more important came along, and he turns three months tomorrow.
Today we took him to get his Chilean passport.
- I would also say it's a very questionable business decision to put a large part of the finances into a very, very small sport, but that was a personal decision and I feel has yielded some of the best results. The other key is that it's a hope that other people will follow suit.

Going back to the "entrepreneurship" stuff, I guess I have shown that I am out of my depth, as a solo person. I really needed to have a team in the application. Unfortunately I did have one in the previous application, but they had said no to that. It would have been much better to have the Start Up Chile at that time. I think the "project" as a whole would have done better, but, that didn't happen, so it's not important.
At least I got in and I just dearly hope that I'm not going to be heavily in debt after finishing up this program.

Just wanted to chime in that I think it's very admirable and cool that you seek out these opportunities to promote the sport. I wish we had more innovator/promoters like you in the sport.

Thanks Ken...Hopefully it will get things ticking among other players and people involved in the community. Maybe things don't always work perfectly but it's always worth a shot.
Don't know if I have mentioned but I am going to be part of the next feria del futbol, and they are giving me much more scope to do things this year. That's exciting.

Played a bit today. Pulled up a bit sore on my hip. I can't remember the trick it was on, I have a feeling it might have been paradox DLO. That's a pretty usual trick for me, especially on strongside, so not a good one to get hurt on. Hopefully that will be fine by tomorrow.
Anyway, it was really cold and ugly weather today. It was good to get a session out, but in reality, there weren't many highlights to write home about.
Had a good chat with Caroline and Jay today. The footbag tour is coming to an end this weekend with the Dzem Jam, and it's sounding pretty good - should be about 20 players, mostly from around Poland, as well as the Sport/Life tour team. Interesting to see how it's gone.
And the most interesting thing is going to be to see how it goes in the future. As we are moving back to Australia, my next thoughts are towards there, and towards something around the Asian Cup in January. A thought that came up today was to bring out players like Phil Morrison or Taiishi. If you play your cards right, you can get cheap flights to Australia from the surrounding regions. The three of us could do something cool.
An interesting observation that Jay took, considering this tour has had the "cream of the crop" in terms of players, is that it's not something really necessary. What is much more needed is the "evident passion". And he said that's what really makes Honza stand out when doing performances etc, is that you can see that he loves what he's doing.
Once settled and back in Australia, I'm looking forward to working at the Australian Institute of Sport again. It was a great opportunity to promote footbag, as the people are coming to you, and you are also on a "level pegging" with other sports.
Public holiday here tomorrow, but that probably won't make much of a difference for me...

I don't know if I mentioned it, but when I was back in Australia, there was a major earthquake in the north of Chile (8.2 in Arica/Iquique). The bloke from the Bega District News, who is actually the next door neighbour of Mum and Dad got in touch and did a little interview with me.
He used a previous photo of me, doing a footbag demonstration. What was quite funny, as this is part of a chain of newspapers (it is actually part of Fairfax, one of the major media companies that does The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, etc), but they have their "Rural Press" part, and it seems anyone who wanted to pick that up (despite nothing doing with their small town), could do that.
Anyway, I had come across previously maybe five different articles from various rural locations, but I was looking for something else and came across with this (I think I was searching Google News for footbag articles) and it was in the Newcastle Herald, which is a pretty big newspaper.
Newcastle is one of the major cities of New South Wales, it's the 7th biggest city in Australia, and has a bigger population than Canberra.

Let's talk about something else "viral". So there has been plenty of reaction to Dani Alves (Barcelona) picking up and eating a banana that was thrown at him when they were playing vs Villareal. Many athletes around the world have posted their photo with a banana. So I was thinking that I could do something with footbag, and try to film something giving a "kick to racism".
I may try this again later, but what I tried didn't work. I did a clipper or too with the thing, but I also wanted to eat the banana, so I didn't want to drop it on the ground too many times.
Anyway, it's pretty difficult to do tricks with a banana. The one I was using was also too soft. It would be better to use a green, riper one. I think these kind of things to provide some opportunity to give a little notice to footbag, if you do it right.

The results of the Dzem Jam - http://sportslashlife.com/dzem-jam-day-one-results/ and the "tour request" video (part one, with apparently easy tricks), reminded me a lot of a key I wanted from this tour.
To have the best players really "competing", and to have an opportunity to have the best in the world all together, not only at Worlds. Of course, you can't get all the best players in the world together, some have to work and have other commitments (this includes for Worlds)

Of course it's also very depressing, because most of these combos I couldn't dream of hitting. Pdx drifter>grifter, maybe I could do that. (It's just a warm up). Toe barrage>pixie op rake, probably not.
Whirr>torquescrew is a no, I can't do either of them. Gyro DLO>symp whirl could be a possibility. Of the next combo, alpine blur>tapping drifter, while I can't currently do that, I can do both those tricks and they link together well on my "stronger side". The other one, forget about it...
What I did like to see those, is these "star players" not hitting something first go. To see something that Juho and Anssi both took three tries to hit, means they are somewhat human. Also, sidewalk swirl is a cool trick and I could probably hit that. I have hit ripwalk swirl a reasonable amount of times.
I have been planning on doing some kind of short "thank you" video for everyone involved in the tour. One key thing I was waiting for was the sun to come out, as it hasn't been out in a number of days. It's sunny today, so maybe I can do something, though my hip is still hurting.
Anyway, back to Gdansk, where I would definitely like to go some day. Here are the results:

Anyway, what there's no doubting is that is a world class field, and I won't be winning any Sick 3 competitions any time soon. Well actually maybe I will. I mentioned this Feria del Futbol, that's going to be happening at the end of the month. Unfortunately my funding is going to be coming to an end, so I can't use the money to support that, but they've invited me to do practically whatever I want with footbag.
It should be a great opportunity to do performances in front of thousands of people. And the best thing now is that I have more than 100 bags, so I can either give them away or sell them. I think in this situation I would prefer to sell them, and there were a few things that Jay said about the tour, is that rather than just giving footbags away, you need to create value, and the kids will go crazy for them, and give you money.
What I would like to potentially do, and will have to move quickly if I want to do that, is to maybe bring down one of the Colombian guys. For one, it would be a great opportunity to hang out before we go, and it would give a bit more credibility to the event, having an "international star".
I think I have left my run too late for that though. I have just been looking at AirAsia for no reason in particular. Ah yes, I was looking to see how cheaply I could get to Paris for Worlds. But I am in no position to be going to Worlds when we are moving across the world with a young baby.
I would say my vision is set on going to Worlds next year, but I don't know if it really is. The two things that are on my radar for international travel next year are the Copa América, which is here in Chile in June, and the Pan American Games, which are on in Toronto in July.
I am really thinking that event could be something to do another kind of tour event around, but have it focused on competition, so every day of the games, have the competition in a different place. Toronto has quite a large amount of footbag players. Many of the places on this map - http://www.toronto2015.org/venues - I have only heard of because footbag players live there.
Anyway, it could also be some kind of "Pan American tournament".

While we're on the subject of Pan American tournaments, in 2016 they will do a "kind of" Copa América in the USA. Since the real one is next year, I don't think it will count, but it's the CONMEBOL 100 year tournament.
I called out an "expert journalist" on Twitter yesterday because he called it the 100th Copa America. While it is the longest running soccer tournament in the world, it hasn't even been running for 100 years, and it doesn't happen every year. Anyway, that should be a key event to focus on doing some kind of major tour.
I have a strong belief that the "footbag tour" is a product that can be sold. Whether to organisations who are running the cups and other tournaments, or to other sponsors, particularly if they're involved with the event. I also believe that shorter events could be done very cheaply.

Probably too much text, so here's a relevant video to the themes of Pan American tourism, from when I went to Colombia. I had a great trip up there. If flights were cheaper and I earned more money (or moreso if I arrived with money to begin with), I could have imagined spending a lot more time up there.
To have the best players really "competing", and to have an opportunity to have the best in the world all together, not only at Worlds. Of course, you can't get all the best players in the world together, some have to work and have other commitments (this includes for Worlds)

Of course it's also very depressing, because most of these combos I couldn't dream of hitting. Pdx drifter>grifter, maybe I could do that. (It's just a warm up). Toe barrage>pixie op rake, probably not.
Whirr>torquescrew is a no, I can't do either of them. Gyro DLO>symp whirl could be a possibility. Of the next combo, alpine blur>tapping drifter, while I can't currently do that, I can do both those tricks and they link together well on my "stronger side". The other one, forget about it...
What I did like to see those, is these "star players" not hitting something first go. To see something that Juho and Anssi both took three tries to hit, means they are somewhat human. Also, sidewalk swirl is a cool trick and I could probably hit that. I have hit ripwalk swirl a reasonable amount of times.
I have been planning on doing some kind of short "thank you" video for everyone involved in the tour. One key thing I was waiting for was the sun to come out, as it hasn't been out in a number of days. It's sunny today, so maybe I can do something, though my hip is still hurting.
Anyway, back to Gdansk, where I would definitely like to go some day. Here are the results:

I just saw this photo of the "journey" of Airbnb - maybe one day there will be a similar picture of "Sport/Life" - that starts with some guys playing footbag and traveling around Europe.
I was thinking about what I would do if I had have been staying in Chile. What I may still do (in case we come back at some stage), is work on some kind of public policy project for sports, looking at the rights of athletes, best practices, funding opportunities etc, etc.
That's for something long into the future though, but a lot of the athletes have been working hard at that here in the last couple of years. It could be good to have some sort of side organisation that could back up the support. This happens a lot in cultural organisations, we have a friend who is a top kind of person in the cultural policy area, she is also moving back to Aus, I think it would be good to pick her brains some day about how to get that kind of thing going.
The original thing I was coming to post here is that I was tagged in this photo in Facebook, even though I wasn't actually there, though Caroline read out something that I wrote, it would have been great to be there - but there is plenty of future in the Happy Seven hostel and I will get there soon enough.

Now that the tour is at an end, I feel I can look back it as a success. When I first got in to the program there was an idea to do some kind of tour with footbag.
As everything is meant to be about being global and scalable, a world tour was on the cards in the early days.
One thing I do regret is not hiring a full time assistant in the early days.
Caroline was going to come out and help me, but bought a hostel in Poland instead. This ended up contributing greatly to the tour in itself, so no problem there, but I should have reacted to that and got someone in then.
I didn't really know what I was doing in those early days, as I had to get my ideas into actual things.
It's going to be great to show a completed tour in Europe as something that was achieved in the time.
What it went from was being a bit of a marketing exercise to spend money, into a key part of the business and a product in itself.
What I was lucky to stumble upon was having Jay and Michelle returning to Europe, and then having Evan go out there gave a more global element.
The tour definitely would not have come together without them, so I hope, actually I know, that I have planted a seed there and something more will come of that.
I had a pretty good session yesterday, I had that gyro dlo-symp whirl combo off my foot a few times. So maybe I can do some of those request combos after all.
Off to Aussie Rules training now. This is something I have definitely been glad to be a part of, and I will miss the club once I am gone.

I got some good news on the financial front today, my first part of the payment has been "approved". Too bad that my time for money spending is basically up, and once I get the rest of the money, I will just have to pay it all out...but the key is that the approval is there, the money is coming.
I was getting concerned that it would get to a certain date and they may just say "no money for you". Then I would be in deep, deep trouble, as I have gone well beyond my means while waiting for this second payment. What is good, though was a big part of the original problem, was that my rent will be included in the second part of the payment, but it's already been paid. That's about 1.5 million pesos right there (around $3,000), which will be vital on how things shape up.
So, looks like that money will come the end of next week. Unfortunately, as things are winding down, the project is really just taking shape. I've been working on this app and started to make some solid progress. It's fairly simple, but dealing with information that is pretty hard to come by in Chile - where and when games are.
In reality I should have worked on something like this my whole project, imagine if I just went bashing at this for six months. The data entry is the killer part, but if you had three months to work on that, paid a bloke to make some nice designs, you'd be laughing. Instead, I left this (which is really just a side project anyway) to the last minute, but it's starting to come good.
I'm hoping to launch the first version of it this week, otherwise a lot of the data entry will have been wasted. It will be free and on iphone/android.

I didn't really know of this trick before, it's pretty awesome. I would also like to add this celebration too.
I don't really follow golf at all, I find it quite boring. But, if you win 180,000 euros for winning a "European Tour" event, which is not even in Europe, well, maybe I should get involved.
Anyway, this bloke Felipe Aguilar, Chilean, whacked it in from way out in the fairway to win the comp in Singapore, then tries to just play it cool, like he does it every week. Since he only won one other event on that tour, more than five years ago, it seems to be he doesn't do that every week at all.

I played today until it was dark. I don't think that is really a great commitment, just that it's getting dark quite early. I guess maybe it's good training to not be able to see the bag...
I hit spinning mirage>paradon as a final trick, I also had spinning swirl come off my foot late in the stage. Body is feeling reasonably normal, still a slight soreness in the hip, but that's on the improve, the other general soreness was wearing off, which is why it was good to have a session.
I was glad to read Ryan's blog and somewhere between the online gaming and the girls, it said that my coming back to Australia got him "back in the game". It seems he's also really back in the game too, playing every day etc. Also that he has a hunger to travel the world and play footbag.
Well, you know how yesterday I said the rent was all good - apparently not. There is one, of many clauses in the lease, which is just the standard lease for the apartment (should have made one that say x lives here and pays the rent of $..., signed y). But this clause says something about it being for the renter and family, of no more than 4 people.
And because of this clause, they say I can only claim 1/4 of the amount. I wrote back an email and the first line was "you surely can't be serious". I have spent half of my time in the project mucking around with the rent. I would have been much better off to go and rent another apartment, then sublet that to someone else for a higher price....
It would be comical if it wasn't so annoying.
Making good progress with the app, it won't be ready this week, but it should be in the app stores for iphone and Android next week. I have finished the Copa Chile, the Santiago rugby competition and the Chilean basketball leagues (of which there are 3). That was my aim to have in before publishing the app.

Have played a bit in the recent days. Yesterday we went over to Francisca's grandma's place for lunch. Of course in Chile when you "go for lunch", don't just book a short part of your day for that, it's the full afternoon.
Anyway, we were sitting outside a while and there was a good space for playing a bit. I didn't have my lavers on, but the "general" shoes I have, some kind of New Balance, have a good clipper surface and work pretty fine for footbag.

Today I met up with this bloke Christian. I met him by chance on the street some time ago. When I first started in Start Up Chile, they had a city tour. I didn't need a tour of the city, but I thought it was a good chance to meet some people in the program. Just at the end this guy came up and we started chatting. I had given him my card and told him to get in touch.
So he got in touch with me the other day, he's not really doing so much at the moment, looking for a visa and a job, or one or the other. I thought footbag would be something good for him to get into, so I gave him a bag, hopefully he will start training. We had a little kick around for a while, which was good fun, then it started getting cold.
I was having a play around with cross body toe stalls. I've never done too much out of that, but I got dlo from there. I guess that would have been zoid dlo, as it was planted to begin. It would be good to get the "toe pdx mirage" style going midrun.
A friend of mine launched a new startup fund last night. I went and there was some free drink. I have been paying for that today. Feeling pretty rough still, and it's dinner time.

The app has also been submitted to the Play Store for Android and App Store for iPhones, so should be ready to go next week, which is pretty awesome.
Anyway, we were sitting outside a while and there was a good space for playing a bit. I didn't have my lavers on, but the "general" shoes I have, some kind of New Balance, have a good clipper surface and work pretty fine for footbag.

Today I met up with this bloke Christian. I met him by chance on the street some time ago. When I first started in Start Up Chile, they had a city tour. I didn't need a tour of the city, but I thought it was a good chance to meet some people in the program. Just at the end this guy came up and we started chatting. I had given him my card and told him to get in touch.
So he got in touch with me the other day, he's not really doing so much at the moment, looking for a visa and a job, or one or the other. I thought footbag would be something good for him to get into, so I gave him a bag, hopefully he will start training. I didn't play yesterday, in fact I didn't go outside at all. The whole weekend was cold and grey, though it looks like the sun is out this morning, which is something.
I didn't have a great time during the Aussie Rules match, didn't get to see a lot of the ball, and the team I was in was thrashed. Afterwards they gave me a diploma for my "services to the club", which was really nice. It has been great to be a part of the club, it's a great little community, but was a disappointing game to go out on.
We've now got about 3 weeks in Chile, which is not much at all. I am still waiting for that second part of the payment, which is going to be a key in the things to do before leaving. There is not really much I can do until getting that, and there is not really much I can do about getting it, but wait.
The little bloke has his passports in process. The Chilean one is ready to pick up, and the Australian one should get there next week, to be picked up at the embassy. He is now one step ahead of both of us, with citizenship in both countries. Each of us have our own citizenship + permanent residence in the other place. Which is a good start...
I am hoping to get the time most days for some footbag sessions. I am also getting prepared for the "feria del futbol", which is going to be at the end of the month. As well as doing some things with footbag, they have also asked me to do something with "footgolf" - which is normally played on a golf course, but I think I can do something fun with that.
I think the space they will give me is a sort of half size field (baby futbol). I'm thinking 9 holes. First few are simple rolling the ball into the "hole", which will be made up of a few cones. I'm thinking the last few will include one where you have to bounce the ball of the goalpost, and the final hole will be to kick into the goal from the penalty spot.
Here's a short, low quality video from last year's edition. This is now the third one coming up, so it should be bigger and better. Hopefully I can also do better things with the bag, and in terms of filming etc.

I will also have a footbag golf tournament. I've got about 200 footbags, which I'm hoping to sell at the event. I hope to also have some more footbags sent to Australia once I receive the second part of the money. At least now I have had the "approval", but it would be very nice to see those millions of pesos, as they are very necessary. Turns out moving your stuff from one side of the world to the other is quite expensive.

Had a short session today. You know when you get some frustrating news, and you just sort of play it out in to really good strings. Well that was happening today, I had a good flow going. Though it wasn't anything amazing etc, I really liked hitting spinning osis b2b right in the middle of a string.
It's not something I do so often. I also hit the same combo while waiting for the elevator. I live on the 23rd floor, so there is plenty of time to wait.
Anyway, worked a bit more on the zoid stuff, had never played with that much before. Did zoid mirage out of out pixie cross body toe. Was trying some spinning/gyro stuff out of the xbody toe. Plenty of potential to explore that.
Had a great game of ultimate frisbee today. That's something I've really enjoyed about Start Up Chile, getting involved in this pick up games, particularly of frisbee, as it happens in the park just down from my house. We had two games to 5, and won both of them, though it was super dark by the time we finished.
Just talked briefly with Jay on Facebook, and we should be seeing some tour video action in the next few days. Hopefully it is less mysterious that this famous second payment from Start Up Chile. Big hopes for that to come on Thursday. I think my Chilean tax return should come tomorrow. That would be a good start.

Got in a couple of short sessions today. Probably played 45 mins total.
Swirlin op toe, that's new. Continued to play around with xbd toe. It's something I've never done before, so it's fun to play with. Hit a couple of cool things, particularly spinning out of it.
Talked to Jay this morning, he said the video is coming along better than expected. Looking forward to seeing that.
