Here is the trailer video. Looks pretty sweet. http://sportslashlife.com/footbag-eurotour-trailer/
My current big thought is to do something in relation to the Asian Cup. But rather than me paying for it, a sponsor pays for it instead. I think I'm going to try and get a couple of students to help me work on this project once I get settled back in Aus.

3 weeks from today, and we're on the plane.

Got some good news about the money. I will be a "millionaire" (of pesos) in the next couple of days. So that's a great relief. The next step will be to sort out my reports. It's good I now have the app, it's something to show for my time in Start Up Chile.

Once the iPhone version is ready, I'm going to work on getting some press for it. That should be within the next few days too.

http://sportslashlife.com/sportlife-sta ... e-android/

Interesting discussion started by Evan on the Facebook group. I have had a few things to say in the discussion, though I think this are the keys to development of any sport.

The biggest part of this is entry level opportunities, and then opportunities at the high end. Once people have been sucked in to the sport, say your average Joe, they play because they like playing. But eventually people drift away, and it may be because there are no opportunities at the high end. Once you win Worlds, there's nothing much there.

Asmus just put something in the conversation right now (hot off the press), which is absolutely true.
What really frustrates me with these kinda conversations is how many who say there are no sponsors and have never applied for a sponsorship. Why not make a SPONSOR-ME tape like in skateboarding and send it out to local companies?
In footbag, there is a lot of waiting for somebody else to do something. A lot of "praying". Of course no money is going to come in if grants are not applied for, sponsorship proposals submitted or "hard yards" being done.

My hope with doing the tour and everything that came around it, is simply that it will inspire people to do something similar. I am very intrigued to see if Jay gets into Start-Up Chile with his application. The results come out in a couple of weeks. I met with a friend last night who is also applying, and I know that he should get in, but it's up to the judges in the end.

He is very much into the movie and social media world, and I showed him the video and he said it was really great.

So this feria del futbol is coming up, and what I'm seriously considering is to invite one of the Colombian guys down. It would be good if I had a bit more money available, then I could say, bring the "winner" of the tour to Chile, and connect all the dots. But there are some reasonable prices from Colombia (about $600 return).

Anyway, back to the point. I don't think the IFPA or the footbag companies do enough to support the sport. I know that Steve does a huge amount for the sport, but he's mainly doing that from his own pocket. Things like flying players to tournaments and things could be done in a much more organised way, or each company has a team, that they makes sure is represented at all the important tournaments.

I don't know if joining the IFPA committees would help. I think what I have done recently has been more productive for what I hope to get done. It could help eventually, but there are a lot of names on those lists, and not a lot of action.

Another big problem is that it doesn't seem that people are interested in Worlds. Denmark seems a good bet for next year. Denmark is well organised and the Scandinavian countries give lots of money to the people to keep them happy. But a poor Worlds this year will mean two poor turnouts in a row and you would have to bring in to question the idea of doing Worlds every year, though I think (as long as it is announced well in anticipation, eg we know where Worlds will be one year ahead) that you can get a strong turnout each year.

But the key is an early announcement. I think Euros will probably be pretty good.

This has been the view from our place for the last couple of years. It's pretty sad to leave, but it's on to a new stage. The girl who will move in just came around today. She's going to buy quite a few things from us (fridge

Image

I'm looking forward to getting settled in, and I think Canberra is going to be the place for us to be. I also feel a lot of potential around this app, and subsequent "rebrandings" etc. For example, you could do a Copa América app, really anything that's based on time and location. So some potential there too.

Not sure if I'll play today, going to have a game of frisbee shortly. Might try and play a bit after that.

I'm a millionaire again. As I'm not at home, I'll let that feeling stay for at least the evening. Tomorrow I will sort my things out and soon enough be back to zero. It's unfortunate that I can't just run away with this money...it could have been even greater benefit to myself and to footbag.

Been plenty of interesting discussion in that thread. No action taken if course.

The key concerns are that footbag players are terrible at marketing, footbag.org is nit an adequate entry point for the sport, and some people claim the physical limits are closing in.

Those people are wrong.

Here's the latest edit from Jay, from their visit to Finland. Finland wasn't so much originally in the tour, because it's expensive and far away from the rest of the places. How things worked out though, was that this Go Expo could be included as more of a "pre-tour" event.

The "marketing" of this one has less of a Sport/Life, more of a Footbag Finland focus in that terms. If things came good one day, and you have a meeting with, let's say, Adidas, or Gatorade, or Crazy John's mobile phone company, or whoever - you just say, this was the client, this is what we did for them.

We can to that for you, for the bargain price of a gazilion pesos, which works out to be a few thousand dollars.

Here is the video.

I am hoping it will create a bit more interaction, I made the post this time at about 10am on a weekend morning, hopefully just when people are thinking about going for a shred. So if they can see Juho on a sled, that should be inspiring

Anyway, I just read that the Go Expo is on again in March next year. It would be good to, well, go. We head to Australia in just over two weeks, so I am sort of suspending considerations until then, but my thoughts are that I could get a "World Tour" off the ground next year.

Probably use a very similar structure to that of the tour that we've just done.

http://www.footbag.org/ifpa/groups/mark ... 202006.pdf

I have just been reading the "current" IFPA plan. It's the five year plan from 2006. After mentioning something on the IFPA stuff, I was having a little chat with Asmus earlier about what to do with getting involved and how to go about it. The great sensation I have had lately is for something to really go ahead, that either a new organisation needs to begin, or there needs to be a huge overhaul.

Anyway, not going to make any big movements until we get settled down in Australia. What is interesting is that this marketing plan outlines a world tour, a ranking system, TV advertisements, paid staff, etc, etc. Lamentable, not much of this has gone into effect. The problem is that almost the double time of this master plan, barely any of it has even been attempted (so why have it in the plan in the first place).

Here is one key problem, that we're always going to struggle with. From the Wiki page of "sports", footbag falls into "miscellaneous sports", along with the following:
Competitive eating
Egg and spoon race
Extreme ironing
Footbag (hacky sack)
Haggis hurling
Lumberjack sports
Aizkolaritza
Axe throwing
Logrolling
Wood chopping
Wood splitting
Patball
Ringette
Sack race
Soap shoes
Speed typing
Tennikoit
Tetherball
Three-legged race
Wallball
Shoe golf
I saw there was a "street sports" section, which Freestyle Football was in, so I added Freestyle Footbag to that. I think I might spend some time in the coming weeks doing some updates to the footbag wikipedia pages. Of course putting links to the sportslashlife.com page, to help myself in the process...

Here is the latest video from the tour. You saw it here first....

Now, if Juho riding a sled couldn't entice you, how about a rabbit obstacle course?

So right now I am writing an article about the discovery of a new species of sea snail off the coast of Chile. I don't really have any idea what I'm speaking of, and I previously started to write both "righting" and "writeing", so I will finish that one off tomorrow. But the big problem is, that I don't really know what I'm talking about, and that it has to be in the "common man" language.

http://www.pensoft.net/journals/zookeys ... from-chile

Anyway, back to the video, I think it has the kind of vibe, well my original sensation was, "hey, that would have been great to be a part of".

We had our radio show this evening. We are going to be finishing that up next week, which is pretty crazy to think, but also good. It started off really well, but hasn't been able to keep the momentum.

I've done a lot of demos and things, but maybe there hasn't always been that quality on show...though in reality, that's not so important.

That River Rock thing sounded really fun. Nick Polini posted something about a tour of "hack and slack" on the Facebook group. Don't know if he was joking, but it's a pretty good idea.

I'm interested to see what happens with the Australian scene once I return. Of course I don't expect it to just suddenly explode. But I do know that in the time I was back, which was very short, I got a few players out of a long hiatus, and also came across a couple of international travelling players.

I guess more interesting is what's going to happen with my life, but that can unfold by itself.

I'm kind of intrigued to see how I come out of this Start-Up Chile process financially. It has been a bit troublesome, but I think it's going to all work out in the end, though I will probably have to end up returning some of the money, as I didn't spend it in time.

Anyway, it's getting on past midnight, time for a rest.

I haven't played too much this week. It was super cold today, I was thinking of a session, but had a few other things to take care of first. One of them was to go and pick up the passport for little Mr Nicolas. He now has Chilean and Australian passports, both with a baby photo in them. I'm sure that's going to come in handy for identification when he's four or so. I think both of them last until he's five.

So he's one step ahead of us. Each of us is a citizen of our country + permanent resident. I would like to go for the citizenship once I'm eligible. I think that should be end 2016. Particularly if I am still closely connected with Chile. Well, I guess through having a Chilean wife and son, I always will be, but you can definitely remain connected without living, or you can drop off.

Image

I meant to share this photo the other day. We had a bit of a family do, and an uncle of Francisca wanted me to play some footbag, so he could get a little video of it before we left. He's a funny character, Tio Mario. Unfortunately he has had some bad news in recent times, two of his daughters have died in the last couple of years. Anyway, he's a good bloke.

Unfortunately I had been drinking some wine beforehand, so wasn't at "full speed ahead", but I did a few tricks for the memories. From there, Flo, the girl on the right, wanted to play, then Cata, who is our niece, went and got a bag I had given previously, then they were playing.

They were getting right into it, trying to get more kicks than each other, trying to do some passing, and I was giving some tips and encouragement and they seemed to really be enjoying it.

At the end of the week I will submit my accounts to Start Up Chile and be all finished up with that. It's important to get that all done before I head off.

It's a public holiday here tomorrow, don't know if that will be more or less conducive to a session. If it's as cold as it was today, that would be less. There was that real winter bite here today, very grey day as well.

Hola primo Daniel!
Gracias!
I just wanted to thank you for all the hard work you are putting in to promoting footbag and will in the future! It is a cold, cold world working for footbag. But we do appreciate you!

I liked the story about the Family fiesta. Sounds like a nice time.

Thanks Asmus...yes, some days it's dark and cold in the footbag promotion world. Other days the sun begins to shine.

I guess the interesting thing to see once I leave Chile is what kind of legacy I leave behind.

Unfortunately it's not going to be much in terms of players etc. It would have been great to back the tour up with a South America version, but that's something that can come later.

I have also applied for a grant to do exactly that. I will find out soon enough if I make it into the next round to make a more detailed application.

It's now two weeks to go until we leave for Australia. Not much time to add to that legacy, though I was just contacted by a net player from Venezuela who is now living in Antofagasta through the footbag chile Facebook page. I have never been there, but haven't heard much pleasant about it either.

This has been the life lately. Boxes, baby - and a very small amount of footbag.

It has been such a process. We've never really done something like this. We've never had the quantity of goods, nor the amount of money required to do an international move. When I came here I had my backpack and maybe another extra bag, which personally I think would be fine to go back with!

I don't have much to report on my own footbag game. Yesterday I did heel stall>swirl, I think that was the first time I've ever done that.

I had a friend arrive in Chile from Scotland yesterday. We met up and drank some beers and walked up the San Cristobál hill. Then we drank some more beers after that. He is one of the international Chilean football obsessives that I have got in contact with through Twitter over the years I've been here.

There are actually quite a few of them! But anyway, he was a really good guy. I also gave him 3 footbags. I'm going to be giving a demo on the weekend at this feria del futbol. That should be a bit of fun. Joel, the Scottish guy is going to help me out.

We are also going to have a mini version of the World Cup "group of death". I will be captaining the Australian team, and we will play against Chile, Spain and the Netherlands. I have roped in a few players, not all Australian, but they said that didn't matter. So that will be a fun way to bow out.

Tonight they're going to show the state of origin, and the aussie rules club is going to give me a farewell. So that should be fun. (more beer).

Oof. So much to write. We leave tomorrow and I'd like to do some kind of reflective post in terms of my time in Chile and my relation with footbag since then.

I probably won't have time to do that in the next days, but I will say I am glad I have managed to continue to play footbag, keep improving at a reasonably steady rate and give some support to the game on a world level.

That's an interesting thing about that word "improving steadily". I've been playing this game for a long time now, and had some sort of short bursts of improvement, but the thing with footbag is you can learn a new trick every day, but still have a lot of new tricks remaining to learn.

Anyway, more recent news. Over the weekend I went to the "Feria de Futbol". This was quite a good following up to the tour, as it was a great opportunity to show footbag to "the masses".

First of all we got roped in to playing a match on the team of freestyle football players, up against la seleccion de Rapa Nui, which is the team from Easter Island. We were thrashed pretty badly in that, but I gave an assist to our team's first goal.

After the match I gave all those guys a footbag.

Image

I told them I would like to see some shots of them kicking next to the moai. That would be pretty awesome. I would like to do that myself at some stage actually.

Eventually I had some time on the field to show some footbag, and I gave away a whole bunch of footbags. I was considering selling them, but in the end I think there was more potential in giving them out, at this event. Mainly because I should have sent these bags away on the ship, not had them using up kilos in my baggage.

Anyway, I gave a bunch away and people were getting right into it. I also had lots of people who were kicking pretty well, on both feet. Aside from that, I also had some more of the freestyle football guys giving it a try. They are always trying really wild tricks, but some times they look close to pulling them off.

It's a bit of a shame we're not going to be around longer, I was developing a reasonable link with those guys. The reality though is it hasn't developed well enough, and has never turned into a good financial opportunity or a regular kicking schedule, so that's not something to worry about.

What I do plan on doing is getting more in touch with the freestyle football guys in Australia, may go in some competitions and things and see how I go there. Hopefully there will be potential to do some paid gigs together as well.

That's what I'm definitely interested in the future. Paid gigs. Not building through time, not volunteering, but $$$.

Anyway, back to the feria. Pretty good experience the first day, was there a few hours, did some great strings in front of pretty big audiences, I hit mobius midrun at some stage, which is pretty rare for me to do. I was trying a few "brave" tricks, but also going for long strings.

Each time I was playing, a pretty good crowd gathered in a reasonably short amount of time. We were also playing just near the "PF" stand. They do different kinds of meats, cheeses, that kind of thing and had plenty of free giveaways.

Image

These kids were pretty reasonable. They were able to control it pretty well on both feet.

I got a lot of stuff on video too, so I will put something together from my time there.

On Friday night we went to the Chile vs Egypt match, where they came from behind to win 3-2. If they play like that first half in Brazil, they are in big trouble. In the second half they were much better.

On the Sunday I was back at the feria, did some more footbag, but more of the focus was on the "mini mundial", in which we recreated the Group B of this aforementioned upcoming little sporting event in a nearby country.

So our Aussies, who only included two actual Australians, took on Chile, The Netherlands and Spain. We had an Englishman, Irish, Scottish, and we roped in three of the Chilean freestyle guys to make up the numbers.

One played in goals and did quite a good job there, while another was a good striker and was our top goalscorer. My game started very badly. In the first minute I got a nice pass up the line from Joe and was looking at open space. Soon enough, I was looking at concrete instead. The Chilean bloke had come flying in and bumped me (head first) into the grandstand next to the pitch. That hurt quite a lot, and still hurts now.

I took the free kick and then subbed off. So that was a bad start and we didn't do too well in that game, we lost 5-1 in the end. The next we played against the Dutch, and in something to hearten old mate Ange Postecoglou, we won! We beat them 3-1, including a long range goal from Joel, the Scottish guy, which went through the goalie's legs. I think it was in this game that Joe got a nice header also.

So we went into our game against Spain with a chance to win the thing, but we couldn't make our opportunities. They also had a couple of lucky goals that kind of pinballed off other players and eventually went in. 4-2 I think was the final score.

Chile ended up winning the thing after beating the Orange blokes, who didn't win any games, despite the fact they play every week. That meant we came third, but in some usual style of Chilean organisation, the Dutch all got a medal, and we just got one between us, which you would have to say is hardly fair.

Afterwards we were able to have a couple of free beers, then we went on to another pub to have a few more beers. When I woke up, I had a very sore head, mainly from smashing it into a metal pole, but also from the beer.

So that's that, I'm going to have a look at some of the video from the expo, I had a pretty good time going there, wish I hadn't have smashed my head into that pole though.

Well, that's that then. Today is our last day in Chile. Well, for the moment. I'm sure we'll be back, probably every 1-2 years for a holiday, maybe in the future move back here.

That wouldn't be for a while though, we've put a large amount of money into sending all the furniture and everything back. Francisca will also inherit a fairly hefty sum, so in the next year or so we will probably look to put a deposit on a house.

Here is a bit of video I put together from the feria del futbol. It's a bit of a mix of people kicking and giving it a go, as well as a few good runs for me in front of pretty steady crowds.

One thing I should have put in the shipping was the footbags (not all), but I still have a serious amount which is adding some weight to the bag.

I guess the good thing about the video is it shows a great variety of people having a go with footbag, and you know maybe some of them will take it up and go from there. Some of those freestyle football guys were getting quite into it too.

Anyway, we're moving into an interesting period of time in our lives. What I hope to do with the rest of this year, is simply earn money, pay back any debts and get into some good saving habits. Also to play footbag, and try to breathe a bit of life back into the Australian footbag scene.

Anyway, the recent days have been horrifically ugly - grey, misty days. But the best thing about that, is once the rain clears, then you get a view like this.

Image

So that's a nice way to say farewell. We had a good evening with a bunch of friends last night, I guess the final farewell. It was a good night. Drank some beers talked some sports.

Once we get settled in a bit there, which is certainly going to take a while, I'll think of the next steps on a few different projects.

That's got to be pretty embarrassing. I mean, do they even have legs? Did they just head the ball back and forth to each other? When you shot on goal, did you shoot at the corners?

Never did that streaming. Heading uo to Canberra today, not sure if I can get in a session with Copey.

Hit atomsmasher b2b a couple of days ago for the first time. That was a big breakthrough...I had mentioned I was working on them.

It has been a pretty express time back in Australia. Have had a few trips to the beach and I got my old skates out of the cupboard.

They have added a lot to the Bega skatepark, which is where I spent practically my entire youth.

I was playing some footbag there and some kids walked by and were super impressed.

I wasn't even doing anything all that spectacular.

We will spend close to the next month in Sydney. ..I think that's going to be a good chance to settle in a bit more.

Came very close to hitting void yesterday. That's a trick that has continued to elude me for far too long.

Haven't got to play a whole lot since arriving back in Australia. Bits and pieces. Had a session today, but it was quite poor. You know, the highlight was probably early in the session, warming up, I did 6 consecutive outside kicks on my left foot, that was probably my highlight.

There were a couple of long runs, but they were boring and repetitive, and I felt a little niggle in my knee after playing.

Haven't caught up with any Aussie players as yet, but hopefully that will change in the next few days. We caught up with the family this morning for a brunch by the water. Nice place with view of the Harbour Bridge.

Image

Have been watching bits and pieces of the World Cup. I would imagine I would have watched a lot more in Chile, particularly due to the time zone. Well, we're not in Chile, so we've got to go with what's on. And that's the old Canberra Raiders, who have been struggling for years and seem to be getting worse....

I have been doing a fun little trick in recent days...pixie heel (but more of a kick/bump than a stall) and then into a swirl. A bit of fun. Have been working on my flip barfly also, seems to be improving a little. I'd like to get that b2b.

Yeah, I think I'm a while of that. My strong side is quite good and my flipside is starting to get there, it's one (of many) tricks that I had unbalanced.

We got up at 2am today to watch the Chile game. In the end it wasn't really worth it, though the outcome finished fairly similar to what I expected.

Speaking of Chile, this actually doesn't have much to do with football, but footbag, I was really impressed by this video of Daniela Seguel juggling a tennis ball with her feet.

http://sportslashlife.com/seguel-ball-c ... wimbledon/

She's the first Chilean woman to play a grand slam in more than 30 years, and is quite good with the ball on her feet. Maybe that can translate to footbag....

The commentary is about grass not just being for cows, as Marcelo Ríos once said in regards to Wimbledon.

I went for a run the other day and I have pulled up quite sore. Particularly on my right foot, it feels as if someone has drilled a hole into my foot. So that's not so good.

Looks like Evan's crowdfunding campaign is doing quite well. He's only a week in and about to tip over $1,500, which is his necessary amount. I think he is in quite a good position for a few reasons.

- He's already in Europe
- He's well liked in the footbag community
- He performed well on the tour and brought a big energy to the group there.
- He's done a lot for the sport in the US, and is probably even feeding a little off the USAUSAUSA feeling of the World Cup.
- He is also really good and likely to have good results at Worlds and Euros, has won his last couple of tournaments in Europe, so it's funding the "top brass".

He is a little unlucky on the timing, as in reality this was my original idea with my project for Start Up Chile, though we ended up focusing more on the tour instead.

I was hoping to get more of a response from the Chilean athletes, but there were two key problems. The main one is nobody wants to "do" anything, they just want the money to pour in. The second, was the creation of "Team Chile", which is backed by the government and Olympic Committee, and will eventually do exactly that.

So it was time for a switch on that front. The other part was the content based stuff, which is what I have been thinking about of late. For the moment I am continuing to focus mainly on Chilean sports, particularly the "world" of Chilean sports, not just football.

Anyway, back on topic, I gave what my mum would call "a certain amount" to the campaign, looks that gave it a nice kick along. It is really great to see what happens when the footbag community works together.

Would be good to see more of that along the lines, as well as more use of crowdfunding. There's a campaign to help with Euros also, that has given it a nice boost too, over 500 euros on there.

Haven't played at all the last couple of days, hoping my foot starts to improve, it's also been quite cold and quite windy. We're going to go down to Canberra this weekend and have a look at some houses, start getting ourselves properly prepared to settle in.

Re: Canberra, Australia>Santiago de Chile - Daniel Boyle

Hello blog. I had a couple of sessions in recent days. Not too much pain in the foot.

I was working on the combo DATW-DSO rpt, which worked pretty well. My ins and outs for double dexes have opposite strong sides, so it can be difficult to make repeats there.

We are in Canberra at the moment, looking for a house. We will be looking first at a very nice place in Hackett, just near where we previously lived.

Something that could change things is that I have a job interview for a position in Shepparton.

The job is as sports editor of the local newspaper, and would be a great opportunity to build on what I have worked on the last few years.

However, it would mean living in a town where we don't know anyone, and Francisca is not so keen on that.

Let's see if I get offered something to begin, then we'll go from there.
