Hello again!

This post will be about where I currently am with my yearly goals (which I set just before Jan 1)

Original post:
 1) 40 Tiltless/25ish unique (basically, I want to ascend to the level of being able to hit comfortable, tiltless strings whenever I want)
2) Whirl BSOS x20 -This is a goal that is meant to help me hit whirl BS whenever I want. Ten times on each side, preferably one string. The same applies to goals #3, #4, and #5.
3) PDX mirage BSOS x20
4) Osis B2B x20
5) Same side Butterfly (from Clipper) BSOS x20
7) BOP rpt. x10
8) Blender BSOS
9) Torque BSOS
10) a. Pixie ducking toe BS
b. Stepping ducking toe BS
c. Atomic ducking toe BS
11) Spinning clipper, spinning pickup, spinning legover, spinning mirage, spinning pdx mirage, spinning whirl, spinning butterfly - All bs
12) Ducking clipper, ducking pickup, ducking legover, ducking mirage, ducking osis, ducking whirl, ducking butterfly - All bs
13) Infinity x100 (This is my real goal for infinity. It may seem high but given that this is a year goal and that infinity is important for control I want to make it a priority.)

How I am currently fairing:
1) 15(ish) tiltless on my better runs. I feel as though I improve how easily I remain tiltless in a string about once a week or so.
2) I have put whirl on an indefinite hold until I get better at core tricks
3) When I'm on, so are my pdx mirages. I can probably meet this goal with pdx mirage > clipper on both sides within a month or two
4) Osis is not something I practice back to back. Last time I drilled osis rpt, I hit 6.
5) I have been putting this trick on hold for a bit but something recently clicked for me, so I think I can meet this within a few months.
6) No sixth goal? I must have overlooked this..
7) I BOP a lot in strings, as they are a big portion of the 3adds I tend to hit in strings. I should meet this within a few months.
8) Since I put whirl on hold, I subsequently had to put blender on hold as well. I want to meet the easier goals with tricks I already know before learning new ones.
9) See #8
10) My reflection of #8 also applies here. Pixies are my main uptime set. Stepping is hard for me, but I continue to work on it occasionally. Other than hitting my first tap a few sessions, I don't practice it too too much at all. I don't want to spread myself thin (adhering to advice offered by other players) so I am sticking with 1 toe set (pixie) and 1 clipper set (stepping.)
11) I have been working on spinning both sides at least once a week. Spinning clipper is close.
12) Ducking clipper has been done on both sides and toe ducking osis on strong.
13) Working hard on this one. I am at 7, I think.

Hey man, really solid string up there :D And reading those goals and your progress on them, AND ESPECIALLY how you're not concerned with the bigger tricks right now, like Whirl, Torque, and Blender… that all really made me proud and undeniably made me smile.

I can't wait to see more footage of you this summer. You have a great crew up there. Hope you guys kick a lot and learn a lot and improve a lot.

I downloaded your video above and watched it in slow motion. I found out why your Osis made you do an Inside bail. A few things:

-You looked at the bag a little bit too long when you get ready for the initial Osis stall. Try to spot it for a split second, then completely trust that you will hit it and turn away and look at your other side quickly. That will help, I promise.

-You possibly could afford to give in with your support leg just a little more? This might not be as important as the first thing, but give it a try.

-I think you could also afford to hold onto it for just a bit longer after you finish the Osis. You kind of did an Osi- and tried to finish the trick a bit early and move right into the next trick. I always used to think the main footbag tricks ended on either of 3 surfaces… Toe, Clipper, and Osis… But if you treat the ending of your Osis like a "Clipper", rather than an "Osis", you will understand it much better. I think it would be wise for you to drill stuff like:

 Osis (freeze for 3 seconds)> ss Mirage bs
 Osis (freeze for 3 seconds)> ss Clipper bs
 Osis (freeze for 3 seconds)> op Clipper bs
 Osis (freeze for 3 seconds)> ss Pickup bs
 Osis (freeze for 3 seconds)> op Pickup bs
 Osis (freeze for 3 seconds)> ss Legover bs
 Osis (freeze for 3 seconds)> op Legover bs

And one for you to work up to, which will come easily after like a week or so of practicing those drills…

 Osis> ss Clipper *rpt That will really solidify your Osis game.

I hope these suggestions help some. I can see your game really starting to explode once you own Osis and Osis tricks. If you make them the center of your attention when you drill this month, that could and probably will happen. Good luck dude. Hope to see you and the rest of the gang soon.

Hallo.

It seems about time to update blog. A day or two after the above video, I had a session with PSU.
Highlights:
clipper > pdx mirage rpt
butterfly >pdx mirage rpt
Inside stall record set to 105 (formerly 68)
Spinning clipper on strong side (new, footed weak)

A few hours ago, April and I got back from NYC. We went there for a Metronomy concert (British electro pop rock.) We got in Tuesday morning at about 3am on Megabus. The company had told us the bus would be an hour to an hour and a half late. After waiting in the Walmart parking lot, in the rain, for two hours, it finally came. Aside from the bumpy start, everything else went smoothly. We met up with our NYFA host, Mikie, and crashed.

The next morning April and I went to a Mikie-recommeded breakfast spot and then went to kick at some park. Mikie and Boatz both found time to kick with us and a great session was had. After the session, we got burgers at a place in Williamsburg called Williamsburger.. heh. After that, April and I relaxed for a bit then went to the concert. It was amazing!!! The band managed to play every single song I consider my favorites from them except for one really old one.
The next day, April and I went out to a French crepe place with Mikie and Alyssa and shredded afterward. Finally, after a long and uncomfortable bus ride back to State, April and I trudged through the rain and passed out. This was a great vacation.

Highlights:
Thursday:
-Wiz BSOS (not new)
-Park walk BSOS (new, very excite)
-Dimwalk BSOS (new, also very excite)
-Spinning clipper (2nd ever)

Friday:
-Possible osis record(?)
-Lots of rolls
-Lots of soles
-A new (to me) reverse refraction trick (I have no idea.) I set to where I am going to hit a clipper then pivot in the opposite direction of the clipper with the bag ending on inside. I don't know what else to call it other than rev refraction, anyone?

Here is a song from the band. This is one of their instrumentals that they did not play at the show. They played every other song I like so it seems right to put this one here.

I'd like to see footage of the revfraction. Sounds cool but I can't picture it. Bug porous on the new Bsos tricks and especially the spinning clipper!! Keep trying Flipside. It will happen eventually. It is really hard to do at first though, so don't give up on it. will check the band out when I get home. Wish you were able to go to river rock jam this weekend. Hope to shred soon

I had a session with Khoa and Ryan yesterday.

Highlights:
-Ripwalk BSOS (not new and pulled my weak side stepping set)
-Osis > Pdx mirage BSOS (not new, but came easily)
-Calf roll BSOS + Outside roll BSOS + strong side thigh roll! (Weak thigh to knee roll is coming along but is a hard one.)

As promised, for Nick, here is a video of reverse refraction (revfraction?)

Here are some highlights from a short session with Khoa from Monday:

Thanks, Aaron! I've been reading your blog; those are some sweet highlights!

I took about 4 days off before playing yesterday and today due to working lots and lots of shifts at work. It showed. I was dropping easy tricks, lessening my string length, and my pixies (both strong and weak) seem to be taking a hiatus. I was talking to Khoa about this and he said they come and go. I guess I'll continue practice with them tomorrow by drilling weak side. Something else that came out negatively today was that Ryan helped me by pointing out how I hunch for stepping (especially weak.) My weak stepping is awful, but Ryan helped me be my second set of eyes and tried his best to get me straight. The result was a highlight *see below. I need to focus on standing straight when stepping and also to get power from my core and legs, as apposed to my back. (work work work)

Another positive note, I started doing an hour and half of yoga M-F last week. It's tough but I think the foundation strengthening should help the jumpiness and lack of completion of stalls in my footbag form. I realize from watching the above videos that I rush a lot (especially toes.) I am hoping that strengthening my balance muscles I can improve that. I have been trying to slow my bagfoot game, but she is hard.

Highlights:

Yesterday: Just kicking at all.

Today:
-Swirl bs (not new, but it's been a while since flip happened. Stoked for this)
-Crispy torque (stepping same osis) on weak (new and completely stoke for it!!!!) *it was sloppy and I was unable to seal with another trick

Sup peeps!

I was very busy today and couldn't find time for kick right away. Luckily, I just found some time and had a nice medium-length solo session. I miss my solo sessions from last summer. I got so much accomplished with them. I have been cramming a lot of work in the past few days in preparation for my weekend back home for my cousin's wedding.

I used this solo session to try some new things. For starters, I would like to improve my pixie set on both sides by a lot. I've given drills like PLO rpt and pixie same mirage several tries each but I am simply not good enough at pixies yet. I feel as though those drills, although they are simple, are a tad too much for me. What I need for my pixies, currently, are reps, however, Ivan pointed out a little while back that setting to hand catch gets your body used to thinking that the hand is the target. This makes it hard to hit tricks out of the set due to the closeness of the post-set bag to the body. I wanted to figure a way to practice my pixies in drill format, minimize drops, and get the desired amount of reps in. I realize I am taking a super simple concept and over analyzing it, but I think the best thing for me to do it pixie toe rpt. Seems good to me in theory; lots of reps and it's similar to how I learned alternating toes before alternating pickup and legover. Thoughts?

Before the highlights, I would like to mention two other things. One is inside set atw (in-to-out) ending on toe. I use inside set orbit (atw out-to-in) ending on toe as a bail for my tiltless game. Inside set atw, however, is odd because it isn't fluid. It's more two-parted; it's more of an inside set same pickup. I have never tried the trick on weak side until tonight. It took a few tries but I was finally able to do it. Strong side was still as wonky as a trick I never could be but came easier. It bothered me how such an easy concept was so hard for me. I need to work on regular atw and orbit, but I think I would like to start practicing these as added help for the in-to-out dex itself.
The last thing I wanted to mention was toe swirl. My strong side is strong toe set, weak swirl/clipper. I had no problem with these tonight, I can even get them uptime and almost mirage out of them. Flipside, on the other hand (foot  ,) is the hardest thing in the world. I was hoping to hit 5 but couldn't hit 1. After much frustration, I took the movements apart and tried the jumpy left leg toe set by itself. It is the root of the problem. My strong swirl can go pretty quickly (at least, quicker than my weak side swirl, which has no trouble when set from right toe.) When I do the jumpy set from left toe, it goes behind me! It's as if I'm scoring a goal between my knees. I tried and tried to fix it but I had much trouble. Sidenote: I was practicing infinities and noticed some trouble so I practiced ten toe set butterfly freezes on each side. Before I corrected it, my left toe set went towards me causing me to cheat on the butter. I fixed it and basically feel as though I need to relearn weak butterfly. My left toe set is lazy.

TLDR:
Is non-dairy cheese really cheese at all? :?: :?: :?:

Highlights:

-Pixie op toe x6 (new pixie drill, more my speed)
-5 clipper set swirls BS (huge for me)
-5 toe set swirls Strong side only (Weakside's all like "Nahhh")
-Pixie op foot osis BS (new on flip)
-Inside set (in-to-out) atw BS (new on flip, I think)

I owe a big thanks to Khoa Nguyen for our post-shred chat on the bus yesterday. I told him about my pixie trouble and he really made me feel better about the inevitable setbacks.

I used to do Pixie Toe b2b too, but that doesn't get you far. I found it out the hard way. Keep this in mind when you're about to drill any set; You need to put a trick after that set that needs a clean set or else you won't hit it. I would go with Pixie ss Clipper bs. Just give Pixie ss Clipper> hand catch 10 tries on both sides every session. It will really help. Once you get good at that, move it to Smear, because you need an even better set out of Pixie to hit that Mirage.

And no, I believe once the "non-dairy" part is added, it relinquishes the title of "cheese".

Nice job on the Swirls bs. That's a big milestone. Took me forever to even get one on flipside. Just keep doing them every session/every other session.

I think you should have Swirl as your "trick to own within the next month". Try Clipper> ss Symp Swirl too. They help you learn regular Swirls. As for the Toe ss Swirl… I would save that as your "progress trick" (I've been doing this lately with certain tricks/drills). Don't attempt Toe Swirl anymore until about 2-3 weeks maybe.. During those 2 weeks, try to get as good at Swirl as you can… by the end of those 2-3 weeks, attempt Flipside Toe Swirl again. If you've put in a good bit of work towards Flip (regular) Swirls, then Flip Toe ss Swirls should have gotten more manageable. So you can sort of look back and say "damn, these were really hard 2-3 weeks ago. This must mean I'm getting better!" It's just a fun and useful way to show yourself some sort of solid visible improvements. If you try this, keep me updated. I will say that it really does work well. I've been using them for a few months now.

Can't wait to kick with you again. Peace

J

Thanks for the advice, hombre.

This weekend, I went back home for my cousin's wedding. It consisted of a beautiful ceremony and fun reception. My other cousin (brother to the one whose wedding it was) let April and I crash at his new home. Unfortunately, April and I were strictly in town for the wedding and had to adhere to bus schedules so we couldn't kick with Toolan or Shramko.

Earlier tonight, I had a quick solo session since I hadn't kicked all weekend. The session ended up being me staying warm, trying concepts I know, and drilling very lightly over them. The best place for me to kick ended up being my complex's tennis courts. Being as it is right in the middle, I was a spectacle and got heckled a few times. A few months ago, this would have bothered me, but I'm getting thicker skin and retain my focus a lot more.

Highlights:
-Datw in lavers! (I was practicing atw, then randomly tried it. I got close in the first attempt [and felt really easy for a near-miss] then hit it easily second time around.) *flip will come shortly ;)
-Ripwalk BS (not new, but I still feel accomplished when I hit it)
-Ducks out with wazzoo.

Hi!
I've been kicking but haven't been getting too many highlights. My life is going pretty well. April got a message from Chris Dean asking about prize bags for USO. She's making two 32s, so I'll make two 14s. Well, I made one already. It turned out to be the best 14 panel I ever stitched on the first try (without having to redo any panels.) Stitching is a nice hobby for post-kick or on no-kick days.

Highlights for the past two weeks:
-Lots of runs with flip pixies
-Pixie guay BSOS
-Ducking clipper BSOS
-toe ducking clipper > ducking clipper > bag hit Ben in side of dee head
-Rooted Butterfly > ss flapper
-Submitted a tasty weird link for Marco's contest. I was stressing about what I wanted to do since I found out about it, made one up on the spot, hit it cleanly first try, squealed with excitement.
-Pixie outside (strong side only; the reason I couldn't hit weak side is because of my bad weak side outside stall and not the pixie [surprsingly])
-Ss illusion BS (new, I CANNOT stand illusions)

Here is a video of he hitting 23 consecutive tiltless from a few days ago. I have hit more tiltless contacts than this in a string but I think this one might be my longest without any 1ADD bails:

Hey!
How are you?

Artsfest is coming up (July 10-13.) It is a festival held in State College every year that draws a decent crowd. Awesomely, some of the crowd will be footbaggers! Nate Bonslaver, Nick Polini, Marc Peralta, and (hopefully) Mike Toolan are coming up! Marc is also coming this Friday, and Coreyx3 is coming next Thursday! PSU summer is fairly eventful.

That's seriously it for my personal life? Well, on to footbag. April and I drilled a bit today after class. I was messing around with April at the bus stop yesterday when I footed what would have been my first 5ADD, toe ss motion. I really want motion in my game but not if I can only hit it on strong. Because of this, I shifted the focus toward my left side today. I have the most trouble with my weak atw/orbit. The little jerk set just doesn't ever seem to work for that side. Combine that with the slow dex speed and you get a frustrated Ben. I feel as though the main problem is my left toe set. I order to try to correct it a bit (while also speeding up my dex,) I did a bunch of toe ss legovers and toe ss pickups. I differentiate these from normal atw/orbit with "set, tap, dex, stall" as opposed to "set, dex, stall." I think if I start with these, it will fix my crappy weak toe set and I could eventually practice atw>orbit rpt as I do on my strong side. I also tried to train raw leg strength with toe ducking.

Other than that, I just messed around with some weird stuff.

Drew, either you are saying that me throwing rocks at you is justified or you are putting yourself down because you don't want to get hit by a rock. Which one is it man!? I got fridge full of rocks arranged by color just waiting for you.

The Misfits are coming to State College in October for a Halloween show. Stoked. Also, I kicked today!

Highlights:

-dimwalk > near pickup rpt.
-Gyro butterfly (new)

Whoa man, Gyro butter??? Props! I forgot how hard that was to learn. I can give you some tips on it when I come up for artsfest minijam. Try to hit it flipside before I come up. Dimwalk> pickup rpt is great too. I agree with Drew, let's throw rocks at him. I mean, it sounds like you're progressing well. I'm hoping I can come up for the misfits show. I don't know if you heard the newest album... It's not very good. Which Sucks, but I'm sure they'll play old stuff though. See ya soon man

Okay Drew, I see your point. You control rocks. Good thing I'm not a muppet.

Nickle, silly thing is I hit it first try. Woo. Flip (anything regarding spins/gyros/inspins) is a bit tricky for me. I have been working on Gyro/Ingyro clipper from outside. It's silly but I like the outsidey style. Links like clipper > dragon > wrap to outside > ingyro clipper is fancier than clipper > dragon > clipper.
