Re: Paul is gaining Confidence and Skill

Post by MetZelRio »

I didn't actually hit any new tricks unless you consider flipside ones new, which I can see that. I just wanted to tie up some loose ends that I didn't hit flip or sauce with no tilts.

DLO is something I am focusing on this month because I love the way it feels, and truly it's not a double legover, its a miraging legover. and since I've schooled those concepts SO MUCH over the last six months, i figure it should be one component that I should HAVE. The one last basic set for DLO is paradox that I have to hit for the first time either side. My cousin Vinny had me try to hit it at the basketball courts last time, but I didn't quite have the concept yet. NOW... I'm going to have it relatively simply, certainly by the end of the month.

Gyro is also a concept I'm going to work on this month. I read in Vaseks book that gyro pickup or guay is the one you need to start with so, that is why I chose that one and it did come to me fairly easy.

Advice taken to heart and it shall be utilized. <3

Ah-ha! Found it. Which style DLO do you do? Do you do the plant or are ya a fan of muted, and have you dabbled with ss DLO at all? After DLO comes Egg! 8)

Hey Derek! DLO is something I'm just beginning to truly train and I intentionally practice all my tricks from the four basic sets if possible for that trick to have for basic sets. So I'll address your question 4 times for my own recollection as well =)

Toe DLO = Plant
Same toe DLO = Plant
Clipper DLO = Plant
Paradox DLO = Haven't hit yet ("yet" being the key word)

As far as Eggbeater goes, the one that Vince shared was my first one this year. I've done 3 or 4 more since then but I'm not schooling them now. They are a concept for my one of my dream tricks, symp mantis (gyro symposium eggbeater) so I will eventually master it

Sesh highlights:

My goal was to set my current string records for L.I.M.P. from the four sets. Some were outstanding, some were okay and some were pathetic and frankly embarrassing.

The string totals I'll dare to share:

Far Legover: 10
Near Legover: 8
Toe Legover: 26
Same Legover: 9
Near Mirage: 23
Toe Pickup: 8
Same Pickup: 10

The other 16 were sauced but need work or need work bad!

Also drilled Symp Mirage from the four basic sets.

Worked form correction on flip Osis and flip Butter.

49 tiltless (+12 from old record)

Drilled swirl. My first 5 attempts on strong, success 4/5 times which was stokified. After the sesh was basically over, I wanted to hit some more swirls bs and I had a Khoa moment...

Image

I had accidentally done it reverse and hit it first try.

"Wait, WHAT????"

So I practiced both sides. Got out BSOD relatively quick... and I have been intimidated by reverse swirls...

Hey Paul, have you tried marathon drilling your LIMP tricks? If you do that for a couple weeks you'll never have to practice them again.

Marathon, no, but that is a goal. I can marathon the legovers. Also the mirages, also the pickups. I can almost marathon the legovers and the pickups together, and probably the mirages soon. Illusions, I have a LITTLE trouble with saucing bubba and pdx illusions. I do it every sesh, but not first try usually. When I can marathon all of them the first time...Dude, i better get that reaction on video and make the cut for the next reactions vid.

Sesh tonight: four hours. Body is paying the price. Highlights: getting better at BOP. Same Toe drifter. Tried flip, wasn't happening at that moment. Flip Osis is feeling juicier. Almost sauced PS Mirage.

Lowlights: flip infinity is so bad. Flip far Osis is so bad. That are getting proper attention however.

Props on the 49 tiltless. What's the most P. Mirages you can do? Alternating, or one side? May just be me, but even though P. Illusion is harder, I find P. Egg easier than P. DLO. 4 hour session? Solo? Putting in some work. At least you have an Osis

Yes, alternating. I tend to alternate unless I end up on the same clipper, but then I realize my error and go back to alternating. My new record as of yesterday is *censored* so I'm pretty happy with that improvement. (I have someone I'm receiving footbag counseling from and for the time being I'm only sharing certain records with this person, and pdx mirage happens to be one of them)

Sesh notes:

A.)

Major understanding breakthrough with

1.) PARADOX ILLUSION
2.) BUBBA
3.) FLIP PARADOX MIRAGE

There is an emphasis on the magic hop for these three. Not an exaggerated magic hop, but it needs to actually happen and not just hope you catch the bag. It feels SO RIGHT and I have results to back up my findings. With this being said about paradox illusion, I'm almost positive I can hit barfly now. It brings to mind what Lon says "don't learn new tricks, you'll know when you are ready to learn a new trick." That's precisely how I feel about barfly with this breakthrough.

B.)

Tiltless string with BSOS swirl. Felt so right, so smooth, So controlled.

C.)

New tricks:

PARADOX DLO (Strong) not really a new trick, but rather a DLO from Paradox set. I wanted to end on this good note, so no flip yet.

DOUBLE DIVING CLIPPER.

Mega-Compliment received and appreciated! Notes from the last two sesh's:

I'm okayyyyyy at illusion but I have analyzed my Illusions from the FaCTS (Another Acronym I made similar to LIMP... FaCTS is: Far/Paradox set, Clipper/Near set, Toe set and Same Side set:)

A Secret to toe set illusion seems to be to swiftly put the set foot down as the dex foot comes up.

Sesh Highlights:

Two links made specifically for control:

Swirl>Mirage bs
Drifter>Mirage bs

Sauced symp mirage, first time as opposed to ss symp mirage.

New Bubba string record and NO DROP. Feels so right with the new understanding. Results are the name of the game.

New Trick

LITTLE APPLE BSOD ( S T O K E D ) I'd been practicing Gyro... and Symp Mirage so It made sense to try it out. GLAD I DID!

Several things… You may have just helped me get my Illusions better :P See everyone can be a teacher in this sport! Try consecutive Swirls & Reverse Swirls bs.. THAT will build you some control if you want control.

Understanding stuff is the hardest part about footbag. Once you understand things, your body can do it much more easily.

Keep it up. You have a way with the bag. I can't wait to see where you are this time next year. Probably in a big kid circle with me at some jam :D

That Post will go down in history. Thank you. Coupled together with the PSU art fest video... these things are changing my footbag world. I tell ya. It did something to me. It has a way of pulling me into it as though I'm kind of there. It makes me almost feel like I just experienced being part of the crew. I don't know why. It just did.

Blue Laces and shirt sesh:

after quickly completing the FaCTS of LIMP drill, plus my 3 concepts I'm training this month, I was feeling stepping. I was just feeling it you know? and Symp also.

Blur BS (my first flip blur ever omg)
Sidewalk BSOS
Blizzard BSOS
Symp whirl BS
and I footed flail twice, literally a dream trick, not just something I really want to hit. an actual dream.

Re: MetZelRio - Wrecked

Post by MetZelRio »

Thank you so much :) I feel like I am part of the community when I make even the slightest bit of difference around here, and I long for that. That was part of my goals list of joining modified and getting back into footbag. I need to really remember that as of right now because...

I PRACTICED FAR TOO MUCH YESTERDAY AND I AM WRECKED.

Physically, sore so bad all over, and I am good about stretching and drinking lots of fluid and all that, so that tells me I practiced FAR too much. thats not good. on the other hand it tells me/everyone i'm pretty serious about this footbag deal.

Emotionally drained, most likely because of two reasons. One, I'm physically wrecked and that is going to take its toll on my emotional side, and two, there was a bittersweet post on modified today. It honestlly tripped me up a little. I think, like Erik Chan said lately that he is one of his favorite players and I guess it took that bittersweet post to have me realize it l myself. I have said to Jay Boychuk that he is a driving force in footbag. Well dad blame it, you are too man. I know you said, "I'm not quitting" and all that but it triggered some serious thinking on my end. I've got a growing family and 2 occupations, perhaps 3. Mega responsibilities and I think/play footbag ALL THE DANG TIME. I might have to back off and that would be so hard to do, since Im able and willing to play. I'm probably just emotionally and physially wrecked, (Plus what that PSU art fest jam video did to me, boy that was a doozy)

I better go.

Edit: "Realize" was a more accurate word than "admit." I "realize" you're one of my favorite players and members of the community. "Admit" makes it sound like I don't want to acknowledge something, or forced to say something I don't truly believe. "Realize" brings about a much clearer understanding of what I was trying to convey.

New string records on:

Legover
ss Legover
Paradox illusion
Next symp mirage
Toe set DLO

Challenge completed:

Ducking clipper> diving clipper>rpt

Footed zooming pickup BSOS

2 bag juggle ten contacts with ease (how in the heck did this get so easy?)

The secret to toe set DLO seems to be the same thing Vasek says in his manual about how to properly do mirage to start with. Set foot, when planted is angled outward. Set the bag up a tiny tad higher than mirage. Set the bag toward your opposite hip, aka bring your hip toward the bag. Cock the dex. Magic hop. FLOAT WITH the bag Perform mirage AND Perform the Legover dex. Return to starting position. Get happy.

Re: MetZelRio is pulling a Truman

Post by MetZelRio »

Just a couple of days ago, I posted in the Facebook Freestyle Footbaggers group for 24 people to start footblogs on Modified in the next 24 hours. There were several that came aboard and I am thrilled that they did because I love modified a whole bunch!

About that same time, there have been some highly tense statements and actions going on for all to behold. I'm very heavy hearted about all these things since I just encouraged new people to join this forum.

Please understand that I am not attacking. I have used caution to carefully write in hopes that what I have said will receive consideration. I gave great effort to quote the author in context, and write politely and considerately:

"I love footbag and the community. It is not my responsibility to [virtually] pat noobs on the back and tell them how awesome their toe stalls are."

Loving the community certainly includes the new players coming aboard, and I am sure you agree with that, no question about it. Some "noobs" will not feel the love when referred to as such. It seems to have a negative connotation to it. And it certainly isn't your responsibility to give them encouragement, but then again, it isn't anyone's responsibility. However, there are people like Nick who have voluntarily taken that responsibility upon themselves and I for one am so glad he did. Thank you for the time you have spent on me and others.

"Anyone that really cares for this sport doesn't need that anyways."

When I started over with footbag in January, I came to the Grand Rapids jam and met you and saw your shredding first hand. I stated in my blog that it was the fourth time in my life that I have ever actually seen footbag being done. This is because there have never been any footbag players anywhere near where I live. Watching footbag videos online had been the only way for me to experience footbag. Playing alone every single time, having no actual feedback, no high fives, no props, EVER in my life is the way of life for me and I wish it weren't so. Seeing all my peers on video giving and receiving fives and props and all that is something I desperately want to experience still to this day. The next best thing I have is to get a virtual pat on the back and have someone tell me that I did good. To say that Anyone that really cares for this sport doesn't need that means either 1.) players like myself don't really care for this sport, since we do actually need that, or 2.) players like myself actually do care for this sport and your statement isn't accurate. I honestly don't know your history with having players around/not having players around, but if you didn't ever have players around to give you encouragement and you didn't need that encouragement at all, that's one thing. On the other hand, if you HAVE had players relatively nearby and have received encouragement by your peers, I can see how you would be incapable of understanding someones need like myself that does need the encouragement.

"Yeah I could totally list all the contributions I've made to the sport and imply that nobody else [aside from a select few] has done anything to help the sport ever."

You may have inferred incorrectly what he was saying. I do not believe he implied that "nobody else aside from a select few has done anything to help the sport ever" neither did i infer that from his statements. When reading his recent contributions, I had the understood that he was giving recent examples of why he was exhausted from his own choice to take upon himself the responsibility of many needs of the online community and was simply writing how he felt. .I did not gather that he was listing his recent contributions to show off at all. I feel that this was a misunderstanding of what the message is that he was trying to convey to the readers of his blog. I also desire to have a part in helping with the community and I try to do so... but I shy away from giving much advice for concern that I might not be giving the most accurate advice, or now I may shy away for the potential reason I may be viewed as a know it all or pompous if i do.

"So I received a very long, bitter and detailed message today"

I do recall seeing a post in your blog that said something like "Please check your PM's." As I go into my modified user control panel, "Private Messages" is the fourth tab. It appears as though He wrote you something confidential, and meant it to be confidential and did not wish to share it with the rest of the community. Of course, once he sends you anything privately, it is now your choice whether to show it to whomever you wish, or not to. I then saw quotes from that private message on the public forum in your footblog. (Although, I chose not to read them for confidentiality sake) Considering how readers of modified will feel about this decision to post private messages in public, I would guess they would feel at least similarly to the way I feel about your decision. I feel that it is breaking confidence that was meant to be a private issue and not published for all to see. It gives me the impression that sending private messages are no longer private messages and I had better think twice about using the private messaging function at all. Also, Since these were private messages, there is the possibility that some of the things which were written may have been quoted out of context and by doing so, the statements appear to have a new meaning that was not intended by the writer. Taking an authors writings out of context can give a misleading view of the author and give them a unfavorable view to the readers . Since I didn't read the quotes from the PM's, I don't know whether this was done or not, but simply hoping you will understand why doing so can be harmful.

I hope you understand that I have attempted to come across as diplomatically as I could in the time I had the opportunity to. Also, If I was in error in the context of which I quoted you, please understand this was not my intent, and I used caution to not do so. I sincerely apologize I felt the need to write this at all.
