Zeb Jackson tried something like this back in 2011. He basically divided up the World tournaments into different tiers (Worlds was worth the most, then USO and Euros, then tournaments that have been around for 5+ years, then newer jams), and assigned points for podium finishes in routine and circle. It didn't work all that well, since few players attended multiple tournaments. I ended up finishing the season ranked 1st, despite not going to Worlds that year.

With rev swirling symp whirl, both legs go in the same direction, and therefore don't get in the way of each other. With Jay's trick, the first dex goes in a different direction than the last 2, so they kind of interfere with each other. I think that makes it harder.

Of course it's much harder, it just seems within the realm if possible, unlike many of the other tricks, but it may be a first as well.

I think you touched upon a key problem in footbag, is that people aren't regularly going to multiple tournaments, which does make any ranking very difficult.

Not much playing again today. Did have a quick session between moving objects. Well, it wasn't really a session, it was just some kicks while passing time, in jeans. 17 guiltless. It was made mainly of ducking clipper and butterfly, but most of my runs are, which is something I plan to work on changing. More variety, more excitement, more tricks I don't often do. That's why I was happy hitting something like bs blur in the middle of a string when I played with Ian, because it's not something I hit, barely ever.

One thing I did today was "weight training". Lifting heavy ojbects, fridge, washing machine, beds, etc etc. It was kind of never ending, but we're into our place now and feeling reasonably comfortable. Of course we had no plates for eating the dinner, but that didn't stop us too much. We'll head down to Bega tomorrow and stay with my Mum and Dad for a week or so, then we'll come back here and get into things full time.

Speaking of full time, I'm going to start really getting into the job application process. I've been wasting too much time in that regard, so time to play catch up there.

Today I hit one of my long time footbag goals. I had a quick session to make sure I played before it rained. We drove down to visit Mum and Dad in Bega, so got in at a reasonable hour for a kick. I was working on another long term goal (ripped warrior b2b), but no news on that.

The one I got was my first 3 dex > 3 dex combo. The first time I hit a three dex trick was at the 2007 Australian titles (it was pixie ss eggbeater). So it took a long time to get another one together.

smog>pixie paradon was the combo. I celebrated a bit too early when I did spikehammer>pixie paradon, thinking I had hit it from fog. I was vindicated a little later on, and that was definitely a satisfying combo. I caught it and threw it right up, then did a neck stall with the catch.

Aside from that I didn't do too much impressive. It was just good to have a proper session and get out of the car. Been doing quite a few long drives of late.

 On to a different topic, I saw this today from Ted Fritsch, making some more noise.
I am looking for a few people to help with experience in web design and accounting along with brainstorming ideas to generate money to re-spread footbag around the world, fund events, bring back prize money and get into schools again. LETS NOT WAIT AS OUR SPORT IS DYING
:!:
Well, you could open a whole can of worms with each few words, but I am just going to say that I don't think footbag is dying. I was thinking of an analogy for it today. It's like a plant in the desert, that doesn't really grow, but it doesn't really die, and if you leave it, it will just stay the same, but if you put it quite a load of work, there is a limited potential for growth.

I had some remarks in Ken's blogs about the possibility for a fully funded tournament, where there's a large prize pool and people are all flown in. I asked if he thought it would ever happen. I think he may have thought I asked if he would put it on.

Back on to that quote from Ted, there is no need for money to be going into schools that process is quite simple, either the school pays, or you give up your time to do some "good deeds", give back to the community etc. It actually doesn't require one cent of outlay to go and get into schools. Well, maybe the bus fare to get to the school.

Tournaments are a different story, but the reality is it's up to each tournament director, and people are generally pulling the purse strings tighter, but it is possible to get money, or stuff. I think Asmus did a really good job in that regard with the DFO last year.

Anyway, with this Latin American grant, you can also do things in Mexico, so that could be a good option to do something with the US players.

Well, I'm rambling now. Hope to get in another good session tomorrow, I'd like to work on that 500 clippers.

Image

We're going on a family trip soon to Kangaroo Valley, a place I have visited a couple of times before. There is a really awesome bridge there. There is me in front of the bridge, maybe 5 or more years ago. Anyway, that will be in a few weeks, hope it goes well. Applied for a few jobs today, let's see if we get any answer from them in the next days.

Hoping to get in a tennis match with my Dad sometime while we're down here. My Mum is on the radio right now, playing a Nick Cave special. We're going to see Nick Cave in December, which should be pretty awesome, that's something that Francisca has always wanted to do, and I have never seen him either.

Speaking of music, I was hoping to go to this show in the snow on the weekend, with Frenzal Rhomb and Bodyjar, as well as my friends in I Exist. Two bands that filled my early teen years, that I also saw early on in my time living in Sydney, then a good collection of mates. But there's no accommodation at anywhere near reasonable rates, and I don't want to toy with the chance of hitting a kangaroo on the way back if I was to drive up and back.

Then there is the little lack of money problem....

I was having a look at some of the videos from the tour. I think this Austrian leg was really quite good, but it had the lowest of the views from the different tour, with Gdansk being the top rated one.

Speaking of the tour, I've started a post on bsos.it about the tour overall, gaining funding, etc, etc. It's going to be a fairly extensive writeup, so I will continue that in the next few days.

Left my session a bit late today, so it was dark pretty soon after I was playing. I had tried to get some cool stuff on film earlier today, we went down to the beach, and were lucky enough to see kangaroos on the beach, some whales out in the ocean and unfortunately, no surf. Considering we were down with all the family, that was fine.

Later on we came across this platform which was obviously perfect for playing footbag on. Unfortunately I didn't play very well.

To make up for my crap playing, I give you a video of some kangaroos on the beach. You don't see that every day.

There was/is a very interesting conversation in Jay's blog, with Ken, Jay and Ivan all giving their angles into "why make a video". I thought on it for myself, and it's obviously not to make the best video in the world, as you can see from the quality (they are generally from my phone), and I simply don't have skills either in filming or editing to make anything really high quality.

Before even thinking about that, I will need to get a better camera, and I'm hoping to get a GoPro soon enough. I might drop the hint to Mum and Dad that it would be very nice as a birthday present. Something to celebrate the three-o. It's coming up soon.

So I just applied to start a teaching degree. It's a Bachelor of Education (graduate entry). The key reason for applying for this one is that you can start next month. I have said for many years that I would like to do a teaching course, I actually enrolled in one many years ago, but never got to starting it.

I think there are a few keys to doing this study - for one it will make me more employable, anywhere. Particularly in small country towns, or if we go back to Chile at some stage. It can also help with any footbag/education programs I do in the future. I'm going to study to be a primary teacher, I think that general variety day to day would suit me better, and I would probably have to study a little bit more to get a full major.

Anyway, back to the videos. This is one that I really like, that even non-footbag people have said, hey that was really cool. It's from we went to Colombia.

A key for me is trying to get the scenery of a place into the action. I know I don't have the game to really impress, I don't have the editing skills to make anything OMG worthy.

What is interesting is that only 4 of the videos in the top 10 on my Youtube channel are footbag related.

Here's one of those non-footbag ones, this one's had about 1,000 views, it's the final moments of one the superclásico matches. That's one thing that I'll miss out on back here.

Anyway, we got some very good news as the parenting payment for Francisca has been approved. It's backdated to when we applied, so she gets one month worth of pay there. That's some very nice news and gets us a bit more comfortable.

Anyway, back to the very start of this post, I had a short session, was trying the combo toe ss drifter>schmoe rpt. I didn't get it, but I think that's a good one to work on from the "tricks I don't usually hit" category. Something I did yesterday was a run with all the varieties of stepping pickup.

I did a pretty fun demo today. I went to Mum's work, she works with people with special needs. She filmed something of it, but a lot of it was sideways, upside down etc, so we can have a look at that later. What I was disappointed in was that I did a really good run, which even included a blurriest in the middle of a 20+ run in the demo, that was fun.

I also did an impromptu routine to a Johnny Cash song that I don't think I have heard before, I went for ages (maybe even more than 2 minutes) without dropping. The people there really enjoyed it, and a few of them had a go. A couple of things I like to do in that kind of situation is to just put it on their foot and see if they can put it up to catch, or the other one (also good with very young kids) is to balance on their head, then try and just catch it in the hands, or later bump it with the knee or put it off the foot.

Anyway, how's this for a compliment - one of the blokes, don't think it was this guy in the picture, but I'm going along and doing a pretty good run, and he says What a cool dude.

Who says footbag is dying....

I had a long chat with Caroline today, maybe for like 2 or 3 hours, we haven't talked probably since the tour ended, so it's been a while.

I talked with her about this funding a bit, it seems like there's plenty to do with it. I also talked to Brayan Stiven from Colombia for a bit. That's the bloke with the tattoo on the back. I said, hey mate, do you want to come to Australia for a footbag tournament, he said well, it's a bit expensive, I said, well what if I pay for it, and he said count me in.

If we're going to create good relations with Australia - Latin America, the first point of call should be the South American champion.

Image

After doing the demo, I came back home then went for a bike ride. Maybe 15 or 17kms. It was an old circuit that I quite like, a few hills but the one that really got me was the final hill to come back home. Pretty much straight after we went for a walk down into the town and I was feeling pretty sore by the end of the day.

That is really awesome. I'm sure footbag is something they've never seen before, and it sounds like you made it a lot of fun for them. Props.

Played quickly today. It was very cold outside, so not a long session. Some quick highlights.

:footbag: 80 tiltless
:footbag: 10 drifters (have a feeling this might be my PB, definitely haven't done them with that style of form)
:footbag: 17 guiltless

Once I did that, that was enough, I was getting a bit too cold by then. Because of the cold we've been inside most of the day. Went for a walk, but it was very windy.

Something I did today was put all the videos from the tour into one post on the Sport/Life site. I had been meaning to do that. I was working on doing it on bsos.it, but I'm going to do something different there. Will work on that over the weekend I think.

This will be good to present it when applying for anything more for Sport/Life. I've made some progress on my application for this Latin American grant, that could be something. Of course don't want to get my hopes up too much, in case I don't get it.

Something that is much more frustrating than the lack of comments vs likes is on Twitter, this happens a lot with the sportslashlife account, pretty much every day a top Chilean athlete will "favorite" a tweet, rather than retweet it and share it with all their follows. That one is a constant frustration.

It was good today because Caterin Bravo, who has been to the Olympics a couple of times, retweeted a post, so that boosted the numbers a little.

http://sportslashlife.com/sportlife-eur ... ur-videos/

Back on that subject, the first two people to like the post I made in the group were Honza Weber and Evan Gatesman. That's something to begin with...

Phil Morrison just shared this thing on his Facebook. It has nothing to do with footbag, but it is impressive all the same. It's the first woman to do one of those "Ninja Warrior" things and qualify for the final. Really shows the strength that gymnasts have.

Going out to the beach tomorrow. Not really pleasant conditions, but Dad has been pretty excited by the charts. He also bought me a new wetsuit so it will be good to test that out. And probably necessary to have it on...

Had another short session today. Hit pixie ducking legover b2b, and also this drill that had troubled me in previous sessions - toe ss drifter>schmoe rpt. I did it quite easily this time around, so that was good.

I was quite sore because we spent most of our morning in the ocean.
Image

The waves were quite good, not that you can really tell from this photo, but I had some really long waves, we went to this beach called Bunga, there are basically two segments. For this purpose we will call them Out the back, which is a kind of reef break off the point, and then in close, which is beyond the infamous "suck rock".

Anyway, the best feeling is to catch a wave from Out the Back, over suck rock and right through in towards the beach. I did that on one, and after riding for probably more than 100 metres, you have this kind of feeling that you have controlled the ocean.

Of course, you've done nothing of the sort, but it's really exhilarating to just fly along the wave and be in control. Less so being thrown into that suck rock area. Kinda sucks, eh eh eh... :?

Image

I've been trying to get some different shots to put into a small video which I will try and put together soon. I reckon this bloke will make an appearance.

Anyway, on to some very good personal footbag news. Some years ago now, I hatched a genius plan. You know the kind where you have something of reasonable value so you decide to hide it away for a later date, but then forget about where you put it...

Well, this evening Francisca said "oh, there's a pair of Rod Laver shoes in the bottom draw". The great man himself (Rod, not God) must have been smiling upon me, because low and behold, exactly as I had planned, but had since forgotten about, bang.

Before leaving I had two pairs of Lavers in reasonable condition. I decided I would take one, and leave one here, in case I came home with a pair with a cracked sole, or even if it was impossible to get them in Chile, I could have them sent over. I reckon I could trawl through my blog to find the hatching of this exact plan.

Anyway, I completely forgot about this plan, so I've come back to a not-so-shiny pair of Lavers. They're used, but they're in quite good condition, and worn in to my feet. So I'm pretty happy about that. It means I have my current pair, which are beginning their way out, another pair which are coming with our stuff, also not in great condition, but not too bad either, then this pair here, which have been sitting just waiting for their opportunity.

Very happy with that. I'm hoping I left a large pile of money for a similar situation....Don't think I will be so fortunate in that case. The other pair of Lavers, which I wore when leaving for South America, I guess they lasted another year (?), as I gave them away, in pretty rough condition, to one of the guys from Venezuela when I went up to the South American Championships.

We're heading back to Canberra next week, time to really get into things and get the "new life" going. We've got our house, got some key items so we're well on our way.

That was a fun read :) So wicked how you can just walk around and see kangaroos. Jealous. All we have close to that is deer. Lame. I did a research paper in college where I researched all about the urban kangaroo problem in Canberra. Crazy stuff. Very eye-opening stuff.

Cool you found your old pair of reserve Lavers too! It's like a geocache in your own place!

Still hoping our paths cross at some point in the future. I'm sure they will.

I have no doubt on that. Hopefully next year. That would make an interesting topic, the kangaroos in Canberra, it's a pretty full on thing.

I always thought it was funny ,hen I lived on campus at uni. International students probably joked about having kangaroos in the backyard before comin, but that's exactly what was happening. ..

Very proud of my forward planning with the Lavers. Good way to avoid the current mess with the new design. Good that the dear wife noticed them in the bottom draw....

Cheers for dropping in Bob, loving your reports from the old days. The trick related stuff is not too imoressive, better to fill it with pictures of kangaroos. ..

had a session in those re-found Lavers today, they felt pretty good. Felt a bit different, but went well. In particular, a couple of new tricks.

parwalk swirl, sidewalk swirl. Just on one side and just alone as tricks, would be great one day to put those two into a combo. Also worked on some different varieties of diving mirage. Didn't get the main thing I was aiming for, which was diving (ss?) mirage b2b. Considering I'm confusing myself just writing it down, that can account for the majority of the problems. Anyway, definitely not a usual concept, which is exactly what I want to be doing.

We went down to Eden today. I got a little video with some scenic background. This was the very first run that I did, and it was going along pretty well, but then I just kind of stopped. At the end of this, not on film. I did paradox blender.

On the way back we stopped at Lennard's Island, which is one of these "mythical" surf breaks that only really break on a big swell. The same blokes who were parked next to us yesterday were there, just coming out.

I don't know if footbag really has these mythical things, maybe some great events, or some players that only appear from time to time, that's the beauty and pain-in-the-bum of sports involving the ocean, it needs the perfect conditions. It's always perfect conditions for footbag...

I know I've had pretty pictures and some good updates and funny looking animals, but not today. It's been a pretty long day. We drove up from Bega this morning and we are now settling in to our place in Canberra, which is pretty great, by the way.

A great discovery, very much footbag related, is that the garage is a perfect shred space, even when it's cold, dark, or rainy, or all of the above.

That's where I had a quick session today. In that, I hit diving ss mirage b2b, I hit bedwetter, which I hadn't done in ages, and my final run was 30 guiltless. Anyway, it's pretty good there, has carpet over parts of it, and there's actually a wardrobe with a mirror on it. Has power as well, so I'll be able to plug in things like music, or a heater.

It was -4 here yesterday, -1 down in Bega. Hope it improves a little on that tomorrow. We saw a fair bit of snow by the road on the way back here.

So crazy to actually read that you have snow right now. I mean I've known that our sessions are reversed, but to read it is super cool and really weird. Also, great find on the shred spot!

Well Ken, that one is just a given!

Nick, despite it being winter, it's pretty rare to see so much of it here, particularly at low elevation. It was probably starting from around 1050m above the sea.

Ian is going to be in town today, look forward to catch up again.

So I mentioned yesterday that Ian was in town. Turned out he was finished by lunchtime, so I cooked up some spag bol and he brought around some fancy garlic bread and we were ready to roll.

Not even any hacking today, but that wasn't part of the plan. We played some Finska, which is closely related (made by the same company) to Kubb, which really "took the Australian footbag community by storm" when Copey described it as "hitting sticks with other sticks".

Image

Here are a couple of Kubb experts, Jamie took this photo. Would be good to get him out and kicking again. He could bring back the bike shorts. That's got to be up there with the most memorable moments in Australian footbag history....

Image

Anyway, this other game is based around numbers, you need to get up to 50 points. If you knock down more than one, you just get that number (ie 3 pins down, 3 points). If you just knock down an individual, you get that amount of points. If you get more than 50, you reset to 25.

Anyway, I won the first game with a fluke shot. I needed 11 for victory, and decided that the 11 was to close to the other pegs. So I was just going to go in that area and try to knock down three or four. My shot veered to the left, bumped the 11 and knocked it down for the victory.

Ian got the second game then I was looking pretty good for the decided. I had been trying to knock down three pins together, which would have given me victory. But if you miss three times in a row, you lose. So I had the 1 close by, I aimed for that, but knocked over another. That meant on my next turn, I could only hit the one. That didn't work out, so I went back down to 25, and eventually Ian won the decided but only just.

Also, I knocked over the gnome in the background. Not worth any points, but worth noting. At least I didn't knock his head off, as they're not ours.

I read two very interesting blogs today. Nothing to do with footbag, more about the world. I have a friend, an English bloke I met in Chile, who is currently in the Ukraine. http://thefrontierukraine.blogspot.com.au/ He was already filming a documentary over there and I guess now there's a lot more interest in it after the plane being shot out of the sky. Still pretty unbelievable that.

For a little less grotesque imagery, this is a writeup of World Cup travels from a friend from Chile. He's a guy from the US, who has been very involved in the startup scene for a few years. He's the "darling" of Start-Up Chile and has recently created his own fund with a few other blokes.

http://www.nathanlustig.com/2014/07/09/ ... azil-2014/

Anyway, this is closer to my mental picture, because the thought of going to a warzone does not appeal to me. Not for journalism, not to "go check it out", and definitely not to get shot by some deflected piece of shrapnel. It's terrible to think about being shot out of the sky, because so many of us fly, and you don't expect to be a target of a missile launcher when you're on a commercial jet just chugging along.

http://www.nathanlustig.com/2014/07/09/ ... azil-2014/

Anyway, back to the other blog, it's about going to the world cup. So this bloke Nathan, he went to maybe ten games. Some of them he was going day after day, flying, taxis, rental cars, as well as changing shirts for the new teams. It sounded exhausting, and it sounded like everywhere things could have gone oh-so-wrong.

But he seemed to have worked it out and not really had any disasters, despite a few calls that could have gone either way.

Anyway, each of those blogs got me thinking quite a bit about writing, about why people read blogs and what to put in blogs. Both of these are "hot news topics" that in general would attract traffic.

In footbag, we're already a very small target audience, so it's got to be something quite reasonable to really capture the attention.

I guess I should talk about my session briefly. I played again in my "shred shed" and came very close to hitting ripped warrior>matador. I believe I hit full symposium tap for the first time, though I would like to get it on video and check that out.

There have been some interesting comments on blogs, Facebook and in conversations that I've had in recent times. A lot about what should and must be done for footbag. The funny thing is that there is no answer to that, and that's the beauty of a "freestyle" sport, is that you can do whatever you want.

On a completely different topic. Can't believe that Berlin Worlds were five years ago. That week, and whole trip, which lasted around a month, remains one of the best times I've had in my life.

Short session today. Played around a bit with a soccerball, think I have almost figured out one of the base tricks, which is directly linked to my recent work on xbd toe. 107 kicks with the ball. Was feeling a little strain in my leg, so didn't go for too much. Was trying for long tiltless runs, but nothing much special. In terms of single tricks, fairy ss drifter, smoke.

Did two tours today. Should have been three, but there was an error from the bus company. Work there will be picking up in the coming month, but I'll probably need something in addition. I hope to work in the hostel again. I'm sure I've mentioned, but I'm waiting to hear back about studying teaching. Hopefully they will have me for this coming semester, which starts very soon.
