Re: Ivan I's Footblog (PSU)

Post by isirc10 »

Since Riverrock, I hadn't really been keeping my footblog up to date, but I was still writing stuff in my journal that I keep. I figure now that I have time and life is starting to treat me a bit better I should fill in some holes in my blog. If you don't care to read all of this, I don't blame you.

This post will be called: "Some thoughts and PA Net Championships". Here goes nothing.

I’ve been writing down my thoughts lately because in reality, I don’t have anything better to do at this point.
Just looking back at the past year, maybe the past 3 years, I have noticed that I am fairly optimistic. I am happy with who I am, I don’t have many regrets, and I feel good about myself physically and mentally. I look at life a bit like a game – there are days when I am winning, days when I am just getting through, and just recently, I have days where I lose. In this so called game with which I am describing my everyday experiences, it all comes down to how I feel during that moment. Averaged out, I can see if I felt good that day, just felt like I was passing the hours, or if I was struggling. I only really stop to think about this sort of thing at the end of a long day or when I have nothing to do, but this type of self-reflection usually helps me feel accomplished and happy with myself.

It doesn’t take much for me to have a day where I feel as though I am winning. It could just be getting up early and finishing an assignment a few days before it is due, or timing the laundry just right so that I don’t have to do the sniff test the next day. Assuming the rest of the day goes off without any serious problems, that day leaves me feeling good about life. On a “meh” day, everything is just ordinary. I do the bare minimum needed and don’t get punished for it. I don’t regret those days, because it just doesn’t really bother me if I don’t put in 100% effort into something and it still works. I call that efficiency and resource allocation. My mom calls it being lazy and halfhearted. I think she is crazy and doesn’t react well to changing circumstances, but I still love her.

Image

This kind of mentality might help you understand why I wasn’t too upset when I snapped my Achilles tendon at PA Net Champs. That event was so fun, I was really happy with how well I was playing doubles net and we were winning. I admit, going into that tournament, I never tried to play net seriously – I played a few points at Worlds and instantly regretted it because I was wearing lavers. I got paired up with Jim Hogan who always set really well for me and did his best to salvage points when I had to deal with serves coming my way. We were winning our semifinal match and I was going for a ball that Drew got over the net. I wasn’t stretching for it or anything, just reacted to get my feet in position to set the ball. I felt a hard snap in my left ankle and immediately lost all feeling in my foot. I think I just collapsed down, tried to move my ankle and couldn’t. I saw that my Achilles tendon no-longer stretched from my hell to my calf, instead there was just an indent of skin where it used to be. “Cool, this is how it feels” was my first thought, and I remember it vividly. In fact, I don’t really remember how it felt, not do I remember my instant reaction that well – I think I might have fallen and gasped out of surprise, but I don’t think there was really any pain past the initial shock.

All of that happened immediately and I remember Jim, Drew, and Aintno coming towards me asking what had happened. At that point I knew what was wrong and I knew what had to be done. Most importantly, nothing actually hurt, but I was too scared to move my leg. I just told them that my Achilles was gone and that I needed to go to the hospital. I said no to ice, although I probably should have accepted it, and slowly (relative to how quickly things happened in my head at the moment) people started coming up and checking on it, someone got directions to the hospital, ect. I don’t really remember everyone who came up to me when I was down, I just remember it being nice and sunny and I was happy because nothing hurt. That was literally my life that that moment, and I was winning. And smiling. Probably looked like an idiot, but who cares, I had a good time even though most people thought I was suffering horribly.

On that note, I would like to point out that I really hoped people would stop worrying about it and just go back to enjoying their day. Unfortunately, I don’t think I was in a position, or had the mental capacity to make that clear to everyone, even though I tried to reassure people that it wasn’t that bad. Next time I play net, I will wear a shirt that says “If I rupture my Achilles, please keep playing, I’m in my happy place right now”. In fine print it will say “but really, if you could take me to the hospital, I’d be even more stoked”. That was one of the reasons I wanted to stay the night there – I wasn’t finished enjoying my tourney experience and if there was going to be no pain and the soonest I could see a doctor was Monday, I might as well make the best of it and soak up the sun. Plus I was surrounded by my best friends and one of the nicest settings for any footbag event I have ever been to.

Image

I owe a huge thanks to everyone who was there, especially the Solonoski family for being such gracious hosts. Adrienne and Ryan, you guys were so awesome for driving me from the middle of nowhere to the nearest hospital, getting lost a few times along the way. You made the hospital stay a bit more bearable. Funny story about that, the nurse was trying to take off my shoe so they could Xray the foot and she just untied it and tried to get it off. I was wearing my low cut hiking shoes so needless to say that caused me a bit of discomfort and got us nowhere. I don’t know about you, but if I need to take a shoe off an injured foot, I will unlace the darn thing until the laces are separate from the shoe, remove the tongue, and then try to take the shoe off. Oh well, no harm done. If I didn’t thank you personally, it’s not that I don’t appreciate your support and help, these past few days have just been a bit hectic for me.

Re: Ivan I's Footblog (PSU)

(Continued from my last post...)

On Tuesday I saw my orthopedist and on Wednesday I had the operation done to fix the tendon. The tear was complete, but the gap was only and inch long so the recovery looked promising. Six weeks of no-weight bearing walking and then a few more for PT. Going into the surgery, I felt like I was winning. In fact, I hadn’t felt like I had really “lost” since the month of March and Ilya’s passing. Jamps aside, that entire month was a collective loss to me.

Sometimes I associate certain songs with events in my life, and Pink Floyd’s How I Wish You Were Here really hits me hard. Man, sometimes I just wish you were here.

I don’t know if I will post this to modified, but I have been struggling with periods of pretty serious depression through the months of April and May. It hasn’t been constant, lasting only a day or two in a row, but when it comes on it is pretty crippling. I have gone to a psychologist about it. But she hasn’t been much help, and none of the medications given to me actually did anything without completely disrupting the way I functioned so in the end it was just me. The way my psychologist described it, I had fallen into a hole with a shovel and the ability to dig, but I wasn’t really digging in the right direction. I guess that makes sense, but I don’t really like her that much so we will just leave it at that. A lot of it stems from my loss of Ilya, but recently I have been learning to deal with that aspect better. I think that the rapid fire combination of my friend’s passing, PSU Jamps, and finals week had me running on fumes and stress, and now that I am working set hours and having time to cool off, I am no-longer on that compressed emotional timetable.

Some mornings I would just wake up and hate everything. Or I just wouldn’t care. I would play footbag, and looking back at session highlights, I would play pretty well, but it no-longer made me happy. I was no-longer winning. The very same activities that I used to cope with emotional stress did nothing these days. Sometimes it would take the silliest thing to go wrong, like spilling milk as I was eating cereal to completely destroy my will for that day. To most people this might seem normal, but to me this was completely new – I was always very stable and unwavering. Negative emotions hurt, but they were easy to deal with and didn’t really stop me from enjoying myself in productive ways. Now I just couldn’t find a way past the crushing sadness and feeling of loneliness that will occupy my mind on some days. Telling myself to “man up and get my shit together” doesn’t work anymore. Neither does distracting myself with my hobbies.

Thankfully these days have been rarer now that I am back in State College and attending a summer class. Yeah it sucks being injured and not being able to do 95% of your favorite activities, but I’m not letting that stop me from trying to enjoy life. It’s too precious to waste feeling sorry for yourself when in reality I have it pretty well compared to other people. I am slowly getting better at dealing with my emotions again and feel better about myself as a result. I will walk two miles uphill in crutches if it means I get to do something I enjoy or watch my friends play footbag. I will hop around the house on one foot while balancing a bowl of milk and cereal in my hand if it means that I can eat breakfast while watching the latest eurotour footbag video in the air conditioned comfort of my room.

Image
Besides stitching a lot, I have been spending a lot of time with the two rats I am taking care of for Kat over the summer. The white one is called Simi (she can be a crazy bitch sometimes) and the dark one is Roo (who will eat almost everything). They are great for when I am feeling down, and never fail to bring out a smile with their antics.

An update on my the state of affairs with my leg. It’s been 5 about weeks since the surgery and things are starting to look better down there. Swelling is subsiding, although I have a minimal range of motion with my ankle and still have to wear a massive black boot on it. In one week I should get some exercises and should be able to start putting some weight on the foot. I figured I could post a picture of it since it isn't so graphic anymore. Sorry if it disturbs people.

Image

Hopefully I can start rebuilding all of the muscle that I lost (which actually made me very sad and still does every time I look at my foot). Haven’t really thought about coming back to footbag yet, I know crank will be a massive problem, and I won’t feel very good about symposium stuff for a while. Right now, I really want to be able to walk, bike, and hike, in that order. Then maybe horseback riding. Then footbag. I expect to have a lot of sessions where I just sit down on the ground and cry out of disappointment when my leg physically can’t do something that was so easy two months ago. Oh well, it will be better than just walking around on crutches all the time.

Image
Kids, being one-sided sucks. Really. Hit every trick on your flipside and eat your oats every morning (or whatever the hell you are supposed to do). For those of you who can kick right now, enjoy that privilege, there will come a day where you will only be able to watch others do it. Anyone who has been injured knows this feeling and hopes with all of their heart that none of their friends will ever have to experience it. I'm excited for the mini Arts Fest Jam coming up this weekend. Hopefully I can get some nice footage out of it and hang out with my best friends.

... and now my footblog is finally caught up. Phew.

Thanks for the gross pick! You have excelled at everything I have ever seen you try in the short time I have known you. I know this setback is just another challenge for you. So, I know that you will kick its ass in the same way that you kick everything else's ass. I'm really pulling for you, buddy!

You seem like a very driven person who doesn't take shortcuts. I think you have the right approach to your recovery, taking it one thing at a time. Walk before you can ripwalk. I hope you do come back to footbag. Some people have come back from really bad injuries early in their careers to the extent that nobody remembers them being injured (Michael Jordan fractured his navicular bone in his sophomore season, and missed 78% of the season).

East Coasts is just under 3 months away. I really hope you recover quickly enough that I can see you there, whether you're playing or not.

Footbag is pulling for you.

Ivan, you're a champ. You've always been a champ. I agree with Ben.. Just another challenge for you to overcome. I feel very confident that this time next year, you'll pass your level you were at before the injury. I'm really looking forward to the day we can shred again. Really miss you buddy. Been thinking about you everyday.

Thanks for the replies gents. I will go to East Coasts, unless school gets in the way like it did last year.

Interesting reading(s). I think you have a great attitude, and that is going to help you.

It could be worth going to another psychologist or even counsellor. If you don't really connect with the person in that role, you don't trust their advice (or it may simply not be suitable, which I think could be the case for you).

Sounds like you reacted pretty incredible to doing the achilles. I think I would have been less calm. Also glad someone took you to the hospital too!

Good luck coming back into the game, I think you will come back much stronger.

Yeah, I'm seeing someone else now. Seems to be helping out a bit more. I have been going through a lot of footage recently, looking to have some videos out in the next few weeks. First one is back from Pumpkin Jam. I have some decent runs there.

So our little Arts fest Jam is happening right now. I didn't know if I would enjoy it as much since I am a bit limited in motion, but it has turned out to be super awesome. I would like to put together a video of it sometime soon.

People who showed up:
Nick, Matt, Cassy, Chrissy, Nate B, Marc, Ryan T, Dan. Plus the usual PSU suspects.

Dig the Pumpkin Jam video, mainly cause you are in it :P. Sad to hear about the injury, but I know you'll be good, in time. And hopefully when that happens, we can finally get our shred on. Looking forward to the Arts Jam video.

Hey Ivan, I know we haven't met each other yet but I wanted to let you know that I enjoyed the PSU Arts Fest Jam video that you just put out. Enjoyed it from my phone yesterday and just now watched it again this morning over coffee. Today when I watched it, my wife was milling around the kitchen and ended up watching it with me….indirectly quite a compliment as she typically doesn't have interest to sit though footbag videos!

Thank you for the comments everyone, it's super cool (and really unusual) to get such an awesome response. I suppose I might post a longer write up of the editing process because it did take me longer than usual to get the video out. Glad people enjoyed the video.

The Achilles is still there, so that is good. Went in for the 6 week check up last week, I get at least 5 more weeks in the boot. However, I was cleared to start putting weight on it next week and PT to exercise the range of motion. Still not strength stuff. Right now the goal is to be walking normally by ECFC. I was a bit disappointed with the recovery schedule when I heard it, hoping it would be a bit quicker. It's gonna suck missing the first few sessions of the school year, as those were always my favorite ones. Oh well, I suppose I will make the best of it - I can find plenty of other stuff to do.

It was really nice of Ben and April to come over on Saturday after their session and chill out at our place. Really appreciate it, and not just for the cookies. Mikie should be stopping by on Friday to shred which is exciting.

I love eating coats! Thanks yo.

Yeah, I was only really disappointed for like a day. Back to the day-to-day living again, and all is well. Carved a stick with Ryan yesterday, going to class and stitching bags today. Taking a week long break from editing.
