Yes Matt, shuffle is hella fun! But then so is spinning, and swirl stuff, and.. I could just keep going :)

I accept your drifter challenge Mathieu! We should make it a contest of some sort..

I spent some time juggling yesterday since I needed a rest day and I still haven't replaced my hoop. My consistency is starting to get better and I'm less embarrassed to practice in front of people now which is cool. Starting to be able to transition between patterns a little more smoothly with three ball.

Another solid solo session today. Great weather for footbag again. I can't remember it ever being so balmy and not humid at this time of year. Amaze.

Filmed a few more badges. Accidentally deleted Pixie Silver. Oops.

Spent a lot of time on flip Fairy. I think I made good progress with that. I was surprised how much I was able to push it without too much discomfort. We’ll see how I feel tomorrow..

I really want an atomic badge but even the 4 contacts for bronze is gonna take some work. I was working towards Atomic op Legover>Atomsmasher repeat today but the best I was able to get was three contacts. Still, progress is being made so I can’t feel bad about that.

Spinning Osis b2b bs

Conversations other women have in the changeroom/sauna drive me crazy sometimes. I never really fit in with most other girls. I think that is partly because I wasn’t brought up with the same pressures to be a ‘girly girl’ as a lot of girls are. But seriously, today in the sauna:

“It’s SO HOT in here”
“My boobs are sweaty”
“Even my hair is hot”
“I need to paint my toenails”
“Omg me too, mine are SO chipped”

*facepalm*

I don't know why people feel the need to say so many unnecessary words all the time. Quiet is so much better than all that.

I got a cylindrical foam roller thingy in the mail today :D So stoked. I've wanted one of these since worlds last year and I finally bothered to order it the other day. In fact I'm going to go spend some time with it right now..

Lol at the sauna chicks. I guess some people really just like to say words... all the time.

Props on spinning osis b2b from the spinning osis man himself. Isn't is fun ;)

Foam rollers are the best, I should probably order one instead of just thinking about it.

I watched this TEDx talk last night and it got me thinking a lot about body image.

Maybe this is less an issue for most people that read this forum because the vast majority of you are men. However, we all grow up in a world with biased media, advertising, and other societal pressures and expectations.

I have made some pretty important changes in my life in the past couple years. I have seen a gradual but unmistakable shift in who I am. I am still a work in progress but I have made huge leaps in terms of my self confidence. Once you start loving yourself a whole new world opens up.

I realized that I had a number of habits that were time consuming, unhealthy, expensive, or all of the above. I decided to stop or drastically cut down on them.

Some of these include:

Wearing antiperspirant
Wearing bras (aside from sports bras for footbag)
Dying my hair
Wearing chapstick
Wearing makeup
Shaving
Eating shitty food
Drinking
Monogamy
Unprotected/risky sexual behaviour

I realize that many of the things I listed are primarily womens’ ‘duties’. I don’t actually need to do any of these things any more than any other human does, so why would I? The money I spend on these habits can be much better spent travelling to footbag events.

I guess the point of this post for me is to not only reflect on progress I’ve made but encourage you to critically analyze your own habits. Question the motives behind your actions and make appropriate changes. Do you do the thing for a reason or is it just something you feel like you ‘should’ be doing? Is it expected of you? It that expectation justified?

I’m hesitant to even post this blog entry because I may come under some criticism. I realize it’s not directly related to footbag. Footbag has, however, positively contributed to my self image and is also a fantastic reason to want to treat the self better. If you don’t take care of yourself in your 20’s how can you expect to continue shredding well into your 30’s and even 40’s?

It's important to make an effort to empathize with your future self. Is the immediate gratification of that big mac worth feeling shitty for the rest of the day? Is being too lazy to stretch worth being sore tomorrow?

I learned about this study a while back (http://psp.sagepub.com/content/34/2/224.full.pdf+html) that posits that we view our future self differently than our present self - we empathize with our future self as if it were another person.

Four experiments showed that the decisions people make for future selves and other people are similar to each other and different from their decisions for present selves.

Reality - you are going to be your future self, don't you want to make that persons life better? I try to bear this in mind in my every day decision making, while still enjoying the present.

I played footbag today!

My consistency seemed to be good but not great. Most of my runs were between 15 and 35 contacts. Worked on DLO’s a bit which I haven’t touched in a while.

Did my pixie silver badge over again which kinda took a lot of effort. Mostly because I would forget what I was supposed to hit or fail to keep track and accidentally repeat tricks. I also got two new bronze badges. These badges are turning out to be incredible motivation. I’m usually all over the place with my solo sessions, practicing a lot of different concepts. The badges allow me to choose a goal and really focus on a particular concept. They give me a reason to really push for something. I’m looking forward to the level 3 badge; I think it will be a wonderful challenge. Thanks for all your hard work Ianek!

Joliette footbag camp is this weekend! Looks to be an intimate event. Sometimes these are the best kind. Looking forward to shredding with Dante. Haven’t seen him since worlds last year! Still waiting to see if Johnny is going to join me *crosses fingers*.

Since we're cool again, figured I'd offer my 2 cents on this. I just very recently figured out these for good. The biggest trick to them is that you try to get your Mirage leg down to the ground asap then the Legover part is really attainable. Didn't blog it, but I hit Legeater (Miraging Pickup) bs tonight. You should give that a try at some point. Tough but fun. I think that might be a good "test" trick for DLO. Like once you hit it with a bit of ease, you'll know that your DLO game is pretty solid. Maybe not, but just a thought.

Either way, try that first tip out for DLO. I think you will enjoy that.

Enjoy Footbag Camp!

Have to disagree with Nick's advice.

The Mirage part of DLO is not the important part of the trick - the Symple Legover is the heart of of it. Trying to plant the Mirage early sounds more like Quantum Legover. The best practice for DLO is Symple ATW (o-i). It's not important to focus on getting the Mirage out of the way because the dexes go in the same direction (clockwise/counter-clockwise) and they flow together. I'd advice getting the setting foot down asap to start the Symple Legover, because it's that Symple jump that actually powers both the dexes.

Also regarding Miraging Pickup as a "test" trick for DLO sounds a bit far-fetched, because of the Symple ATW i-o versus o-i. It's like Symp Illusion versus Symp Mirage. Miraging Symp Mirage and Miraging Pickup are closer to being "test" tricks for each other.
For Legeater, though, getting the Mirage out of the way in time is more important, because the dexes don't go in the same direction, and there's little room. Same thing for Eggbeater. And going a bit further, the same thing applies for Whirling Swirl as well: fast uptime Whirl and strong Symple Swirl.

Anyway - my tip for DLO is to practice Symple ATW (o-i).

Wow it’s surreal to have a player that’s so much more advanced than me envy part of my game :)

And yeah with DLO I generally just focus on making that legover happen and it works out pretty well for me. Right now I’m just struggling a bit with the bag placement and pivot for pdx. DLO. I’m sure it’ll get easier with more practice :)

Looks like I’m going to another event solo. I miss going to events with a car full of footbaggers. Grand Rapids jam was an amazing experience because five of us (Johnny, Erik, Adam, Alex and I) were jammed into one car. So many jokes and good times.

Attending events alone does allow a certain amount of autonomy and flexibility that I appreciate. It’s gonna be another long drive alone though..

Speaking of driving I just heard from Johnny Sarah and I might be picking him up at Pearson tonight and going to party in Buffalo with him and Anton. I cannot pass this up. This weekend may just have gone to the next level. Who needs sleep anyways..

So worlds happened! I wasn’t there and I don’t feel that bad about it. There is no possible way it could have been better than my USO-Skydiving adventure week that I had instead.

I was really rooting for Evan Gatesman. It’s amazing that he won two events (Circle and sick 3) and came SO CLOSE for routines (2nd). He beat Vasek though which is crazy awesome!!

It’s really a shame that there’s no female representation in the open categories. Especially when the talent is there. I will change that some day. I wasn’t ready this year anyways but maybe I will be in 2015 or 2016.

Looking forward to the footage. I really want to see the routines!

I watched Vasek’s routine and wasn’t impressed at all. I mean, it was a typical Vasek routine so of course it was highly skilled and dropless. However the music was meh and there was no interest. He didn’t surprise me at all.

I’m curious to see Rene’s routine from semi’s since he came out on top that round. He had really nice choreo last year so I expect good things.

About the far DLO, have you tried dropping the mirage and just going for near symp legover?

I find this helps a lot. I find the mirage is a bit of a distraction if anything.

Well this has been a neat long weekend!

Johnny Breakdown didn’t end up getting a flight to YYZ unfortunately (but maybe this was actually fortunate, because I can’t say no).

I got up unnecessarily early saturday and left for Joliette. I was driving alone and I wasn’t sure if I would get lost or run into traffic. The drive turned out to be a nice, easy highway drive and I made it on schedule with two stops and two small detours.

I arrived at Mathieu’s place around 10 am. He was surprised I was so early. Yeah I was totally up at 3am…

I met Mats girlfriend and two of his super chill cats. Then Dante got out of the shower and I got to give him a big hug! Turns out he was totally at PSU jamps so it hadn’t been that long. I don’t think we hung out much last time though.

Mathieu lives super close (like literally in) the Joliette town centre so we went there with Dante to play a little 2 and 3 square. Mat dominated. We shredded a tiny bit after that but not too much cause we were planning to play with others later.

I like the feel of Joliette. It’s really nice, quaint. Unlike Montreal, almost nobody here speaks English so that’s a little tricky.

Back at Mat’s we jumped in the pool which was super refreshing! We had some pasta for lunch then Dante and I took a quick power nap.

When we got up Ianek was there! It was good to see him! Unfortunately he had an accident recently and got stitches in his mouth and near his eye. I had really been looking forward to shredding with him but it didn’t look like that would happen this time. We hardly ever seem to shred together even though we see each other fairly regularly.

Two other Montreal freestylers arrived - Guillaume and Francois.

We all headed back to the downtown area again for the real shred. It was pretty hot so it was easy to stay warmed up even when we played in a five man. I didn’t play amazingly but it was a lot of fun! Francois has some crazy tricks up his sleeve. Rev Swirling far toe is one I’ll have to try. Guillaume is a newer player with some solid illusion game going on. It’s rare to see a tiltless player do more illusions than mirages.

Image

We had a couple little competitions - Horse and request. I had never played footbag horse and it was a lot of fun! It was really tough for me to think of combos that I could hit first try that would stump the guys though. I ended up getting fourth and Francois won which was cool! He doesn’t even know what most tricks are but if you show him he just goes ahead and hits it. He has talent. Too bad he doesn’t really hit runs.

Image

Request is always fun. In between the two competitions I tired myself out working on Vortex. Ianek helped me a lot with that so I think I will be able to get it with a little more practice. I got out early in request because I had no energy left. I think I was out on Blur>Fairy Legover which should have been easy. Dante ended up taking request. I think Mathieu posted all the combos in the event page.

One fun request combo that I hit (but not during the comp):

Paradon>Torque

I had some really good conversation with Ianek about how much ADDs have bastardized the sport and other things. He is really interesting to talk to and has great insight. He also helped me out a bit with pdx. Blenders.

Back at Mat’s we jumped in the pool and ate hotdogs. There was lots more interesting discussion about competition and things. Ianek totally sold me on the idea of a battle competition. If done right it can be awesome. Here is a great example of how it can be:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbqbpLeYCUk

It’s really cool because it’s more of a show. You get to keep going if you drop (it’s a timed thing) so it’s okay to take risks and go for bigs stuff.

We watched some cool footbag videos. One was the first circle comp ever at worlds (06?) with Milan, Jorden, Felix, and Ales. It was really cool because it was also done more as a show. It was timed as well so the guys didn’t play as safe which made it more intense/exciting. Circle tends to be so boring because people play it safe since you only get three tries per round. I think this is a big problem.

Saturday evening we had a fire which was really chill. More good conversation. A lot of French that just went over my head this weekend also.

Sunday we went to Montreal for Tam tam!!!! I was super stoked for this because tam tam is legendary.

The walk from mats car through Montreal to tam tam was awesome. So many interesting shops that I would love to go in. I could spent so much time there. The people watching in Montreal is great! So many interesting styles. LOVE.

It was just Mat, Dante and I at the beginning. These two are both great at footbag. Mat has amazing Fairy sets.

Image

Dante just kicks ass. Every run had something notable. Here is just an average one I took video of but this it definitely not representative of his level:

My shoulders have been sore lately and I think the couch thing that I slept on irritated that more. At some point shortly after we arrived at tam tam my back seized up between the shoulders and it was super painful. I really struggled to even play because of this unfortunately.

I was walking around near the back of the statue and randomly found a $10 bill! Tons of people were around but noone that clearly dropped it so I snagged that. That never happens! Crazy!

I joined another hack circle there that was really fun! One of the three guys was a long time foursquare player (I actually called it because he was doing blind kicks and fake out type stuff) and another played net - he knew about worlds. All of them had good bs kicks and some other tricks so they were a lot of fun to kick with.

Francois came out and played for a while also. He seemed to play better Sunday and had some really interesting runs.

If you’ve never been to tam tam you simply must go some day. The feeling there is so unique and positive. All types of people gather for this massive drum circle. There are always lots of other obscure hobbies too. It’s just the best vibe. We play at the base of this statue:

Image

The drum circle is visible where the crowd of people is on the left of the photo. This was early in the afternoon but it gets much bigger later on.

EDIT: I totally forgot to mention that James randomly ran into us at tam tam!! He wasn't able to shred because he had his son this weekend but it was a totally awesome surprise! It was really good to see him briefly and give him some good hugs. We will get to hang out more at the Paris ON event at the end of the month so I'm looking forward to that :D

After tam tam I went out for sushi with Mat and Dante. This was such a great idea! So satisfying. It was great to get to know Mathieu a little better. He has lots of interesting stories about working in Africa, making money on the internet, and other things.

We watched more footbag videos including the new one from Evan twice. So good.

I played pass the pigs for the first time and we also played a game of Clue. I was pretty much a zombie by this point so we called it an early night.

Dante ended up grabbing a ride with me back to Kingston. I was nice to have a driving companion. There were some accidents and we got caught in some traffic so it ended up taking over 8 hours to get home. We had some interesting conversations about philosophy of happiness and other things. We also had some comfortable silences which I appreciate.

It’s always nice to go to a small event like this and get to know footbag friends better. Dante, Mat, and Ianek were already my friends but I feel like I got to know them so much better this weekend :) The bright side of small events is that you don’t feel like you missed out on hanging out with people.

Ianek really gave me an interesting perspective on freestyle and made me think about it a little differently. I love how much I learn at every single event, big or small!!!

I heard Greg Raymond is playing these days and I will definitely be visiting Kingston soon for a shred with him and Dante. It’s only about twice as far as a Toronto session so a day trip is totally doable.

My shoulders are still pretty messed and all that driving didn’t help. Dante did some great work on my back though which did help the situation so I was very grateful for that. Hopefully it will improve now that I can sleep in my own bed. I’m a little disappointed in the quality and quantity of my shred this weekend but I still had a great time and learned a bunch so of course the trip was totally worth it!

Hey,you. Yes, you! I have two things. One of them is a porpoise. The other is a proposition. First off, the porpoise is mine. Secondly, the proposition involves me filling a large vat with cottage cheese and giving it to someone as well as you helping someone else learn fairies.

I think I understood most of that post. I will accept your vat of cottage cheese in exchange for fairy knowledge.

I wasn't going to do a new routine for east coasts but then I found a song that I really like. It's super upbeat and fun and has some good cues. I was just messing around while running some samples this morning and figured out some potential choreography. I'm going to try to ease up on the difficulty so I have a better chance at going dropless.

My new hoop came yesterday!

The one I ordered was a begginner hoop (like a sandbag in footbag) but for some reason they upgraded it to the more expensive polypro material (think 32 panel)! This is exciting because it's a lighter, more responsive material that's great for freestyle tricks. I was planning to get one of these ones from Kristin soon anyways but needless to say I'm totally stoked!

It also matches my colourful bird shirt which is just extra win.

I slept great last night and feel awesome! Looking forward to a productive day of science, hooping, and footbag! :D

I must confess that I adjusted the colours in that photo a bit.

Ben messaged me today asking for help with Fairy set. He managed to flatter me enough to convince me to make a tutorial video even though I don’t feel all that qualified for the job. Hopefully it’s helpful and not completely misleading

I had an okay session today. Spent some time trying to figure out my new routine. It’s coming along. It was nice to have some time after USO for non routine sessions before diving into a routine for ECFC. I still have lots of time to work out the choreography and practice the new one.

I spent some time on diving stuff today. This is definitely the biggest hole in my game right now but I’m making progress. I drilled Zulu Clipper bs a bunch which is a new trick for me I think. It’s starting to make sense.

I also spent some time with my new hoop. It’s super fast! I’m pretty clumsy with it since its a lot more difficult to control than the last hoop I had. I can tell that with more practice I will be able to do some awesome stuff with it.

At least when you drop a footbag you don't have to chase after it. My hoop really likes to get away from me. I'm such a newb :D
