I would start working on that routine for next year once these last comps are done and build it up from there.

I don't think the actual tricks need to be both sides for the routine, but you need a reasonably similar amount of concepts on each side.

What trick would you do in and out of rubberman for the challenge? You made it look very easy when you did it.

I don't have very many options it would have to be something like pixie/fairy dlo/egg or blurry whirl maybe. I'm glad it looked easy but in reality it wasn't ;)

Session today at Bahen with Adam, Erik, JJ, and Mike! It was fun. Footed void. Seems way easier than vortex lol. Atomics were feeling good for the first time in a session with other people so that was cool. Still not consistent enough though.

Adam and Erik were trying to hit combos for the rubberman challenge thing (not on video). It was fun to watch but it was the end of the session so they were tired. Hopefully they give it a proper go on film!

Party time. More later!

Hey thanks! Glad you enjoy my ramblings. I'll have to go back and take a look at some of my old posts one of these days. I wish I had started detailing my adventures earlier in my footbag career.

Dear blog,

I know I've been neglecting you. There is much to write about but the time and energy has been lacking. Birthday jam writeup is still to come. Yesterday I made a spontaneous trip out to Buffalo to jam with Johnny Breakdown and Doug Tank. It was a great time. I will detail that soon also.

In the mean time here's a cool bathroom.

Okay here we go!

Saturday was my birthday session! Even though Sunday was my actual birthday. Saturday was my pre-birthday session!

So many people bailed! Like all of them. Except FAT. It’s too bad people don’t take commitments seriously. That wasn’t going to get me down though!

I showed up to Bahen because it was rainy so we were to session indoors. Erik and Mike were there! Mike didn’t actually confirm so that was a pleasant surprise!! Soon Adam arrived and we got down to shred. J arrived not long after.

I had some okay runs near the beginning but nothing too groundbreaking. It was a fun session.

JJ left early and the four of us got sushi! I love sushi. Awesome people, good food. Perfect.

Nobody else liked fortune cookies so I got ALL OF THEM. Nice.

We split up after dinner and I went to check in to my rented dorm room and shower. Tequila was consumed.

Adam was down to party which I was stoked about. He knows the city super well. You can be at any party or bar pretty much anywhere and theres always someone he knows! Crazy.

We walked over to an apartment where a few of his lady friends were hanging out pregaming. We chilled at this place for a while and I hung out with the four chill cats that also lived there.

Eventually I heard back from Johnny! He couldn’t make the session because he got stuck on a job but he was down to come out and party! I was really excited to see him.

Adam and I walked over to a club in Kensington market that Johnny and Kristin were at. It was a chill trance/electronic show. When we walked in there were several people hooping. Neat. Chill vibes.

Johnny and Kristin gifted me a beautiful hoop!!! It’s so pretty! You can’t really see it in the photo but the shiny part looks green or blue depending on the light on it.

It was mildly tragic that I had to be responsible for the hoop while partying. Every drunk person that saw it wanted to try it out. I was too nice at first and let people touch it. EVERY SINGLE person that tried just failed miserably. It ended up getting a bit scuffed up from being dropped a bunch.

I talked to Johnny a bunch about the upcoming event in Paris! Super mega stoked for this. He also mentioned the shoe project that him and Tom are working on. They have a couple roadblocks by the sounds of it and both are very busy people but I was glad to hear that they haven’t scrapped the project or anything.

The trance party was fun but the music super repetitive. We had fun making fun of it because every time there was a drop it just went back to the EXACT SAME beat. lolz.

Eventually Johnny and Kristin were ready to head home. I often get complimented for my hugs but I have to say that Johnny gives the best hugs ever! We had a really nice moment. He’s such a badass. I also need to mention that he was dressed dapper as fuck as usual.

Adam and I had another party to get to! We headed over to Sneaky Dee’s which has an upstairs bar that plays 50’s and 60’s tunes on Saturday night. We met back up with a couple of his friends and it was super fun!! That was where I took the bathroom photo in the previous post. The bouncers were cool about holding onto my hoop so that was helpful.

So much dancing! The music was really fun.

After last call Adam walked me back to the place I was staying. We grabbed pork and rice on the way. That food was probably the only reason I was functional the next day. Good call Adam.

I slept decently well and then next morning I got up and took myself out for birthday breakfast. I went to Sneaky Dee’s for that. It’s as if the night came full circle or something. That place is rad.

Check the art in the booth I was in:

Sunday Erik was the only person down to play and I was super okay with that. I was looking forward to a more intense two man session with him.

It was a beautiful day and I walked over to Yonge and Dundas square. I stopped on the way somewhere on the U of T campus and had a short session with my new hoop. Improving all the time. Fun!

Image

I arrived at Y&D and the shin splints were strong by this point. I need better walking shoes. It only happens when I walk a lot with a heavy backpack. Luckily it doesn’t bother me when I shred.

They closed down Yonge street Sunday morning and opened it to pedestrian traffic for no apparent reason. I kinda wanted to play in front of people so I suggested to Erik that we play in/near the square.

Image

The start of the session was the best part for me. We found a sick shady spot at one corner of the square and started playing. I love playing in front of people! Playing for the layman gives me completely different motivation behind my game. It’s like a completely different perspective!

When I busk I like to do really long runs of different basic stalls, clippers, dragons, soles, etc. varying the height of the bag and doing different types of kicks inbetween. I feel like I can just keep going and people love it! We had a really good crowd for a bit and the vibes were just so good! That didn’t last long though. Apparently they are cracking down on busking bylaws and you can’t do any performing in the square. Lamesauce.

We went across the street and tried to play in a few different spots but kept getting muscled out by other buskers. They are serious business and I just wanna play hacky sack.

Eventually we finished off our session at the originally planned location, trinity square. A couple guys came up and were super stoked about it. That was pretty cool.

I was glad Erik came out and I got to have a non-solo birthday shred.

Overall my birthday weekend in Toronto was totally awesome. I love that city. I hope I can live there soon!

My family birthday dinner that evening was rough. I was so drained. I suffered a two day hangover. Alcohol is stupid. There are such better substances out there, why is this awful thing the one that society deemed acceptable?

Went to bed at 6:30pm Sunday. At some point I received a message from Johnny ‘Breakdown’ Sarah that he would be in Buffalo only until Tuesday morning. I didn’t care to think about that at that point.

I got into school early Monday, still hungover. Did some work and actually had a small chemistry success that my supervisor was STOKED about. Managed to dip out at 1:30. By this point my hangover had subsided and the thought of jamming with Johnny and Doug Tank was too much to resist. Buffalo was a go.

I got ready as quick as I could to try and beat the worst of rush hour. I knew I was in for some traffic though since I had to travel to the other side of toronto to get to the border. Left my house at 2:30, sat in a good hour or so of traffic, and got to the border around 5:30. The wait actually wasn’t so bad.

All I had was this address in a town somewhere near Buffalo. My GPS brought me to a seriously high income neighbourhood.

Like holy shit. I have never seen houses worth this much money in real life ever. I can’t even guess what some of them are worth - 20, 40, 100 million? Just outrageous.

I arrive at the address, the mansion. I am greeted by Johnny and Doug! So good to see these guys again. It had been some time.

Johnny gave me a tour of this house owned by his uncle and his partner. Cool modern architecture, tons of expensive art and furniture, insane kitchen, indoor pool, spiral staircase, massive fireplace, sound system etc. etc.

One bathroom has walls that are entirely mirrors! Just in case you need to see hundreds of yourself from many angles while pooping. What a trip.

The three of us geared up and headed to a nearby park to shred. The weather was perfect and there was a wooden gazebo just waiting for us to shred it up!

This session had a great feeling! My energy didn’t last too long but I had a lot of fun playing with Johnny and Doug. Johnny has improved considerably since I met him in January. He’s hitting longer, more controlled runs and seems to have more of a positivity about the game which is just great to see! Doug also tore it up even though he doesn’t practice much these days.

Image

Back at the swanky abode we grabbed showers and chilled out of bit. This was probably the most epic shower of my life. Four shower heads. The floor of the shower all pebbles. Fancy.

We ordered a pizza from a nearby bar/food place. We walked in and I felt immediately uncomfortable. This place was in sharp contrast to the neighbourhood we were just in. Greasy.

The pizza was without question the worst pizza I’ve ever experienced. It was actually comical how bad this pizza was. We had some good laughs. There was no red sauce on it? wtf. Hella greasy. ‘Merica.

We had some good tunes going on the sound system and Johnny busted out this CRAZY geometric trippy light contraption. Awesome. I had so much fun messing around with my new hoop and grooving in this trippy place. I’m so thankful that footbag has made experiences like this possible! The three of hung out and had lots of laughs and I explored a new facet of my brain. Such a great experience. My hoop looked so neat in the trippy lights. Hooping is the best.

I think I dozed off for about 30 minutes before it was time for me to hit the road again. I wanted to be on the road by 3am to miss rush hour traffic. I said my goodbyes to the guys and made my journey home.

I managed to get home by 5:30 without any stops. Keeping myself awake for the last hour of the journey became an exercise in self-inflicted pain. Not an ideal scenario but effective nonetheless.

Two hours sleep and off to school! Luckily I was able to duck out early this afternoon again and grab a much needed nap.

What an awesome, unexpected adventure!!!

Additional thoughts:

I love busking! I want try it at a good location sometime. I like the aspects of my game that it brings out and seeing what types of tricks bypassers are stoked about. I like not worrying about bailing. As far as the audience is concerned, you are awesome if you can simply keep it up and do interesting (not necessarily difficult) tricks.

I’m so lucky to have the Footbag Association of Toronto in my life! They are all such badasses.

Footbag adventures trump sleep.

Johnny Sarah is awesome! Such a positive person. Knows what he wants out of life and takes it! Inspiring.

Doug Tank is alright I guess…

But seriously he is fucking hilarious.

I got a badass rechargeable bluetooth speaker for my birthday. So clutch.

That Buffalo jam was such an incredible unexpected surprise! I feel less bad about missing NYFA jam this weekend. It was that great. Some of the best footbag events are small, short, and just packed full of awesome.

Whoa that was a long post. If you made it all the way through, cool!

I'm going back to bed now.

Turns out I'm allergic to all the things..

Namely dust mites, cats (this one must be mild though - cats are my homies), tree pollen, grass pollen, weed pollen, ragweed, birch, cherries, raspberries.

Those last two hurt. I consumed a MASSIVE bag of cherries at USO and I was totally fine (thankfully!). It's seems to have been a combination of cherries and raspberries that caused my allergic reaction last time. Apparently none of the environmental factors were in season around that time. I've even eaten raspberries since then but I've been told not to touch them at all any more. Lame. At least I have a vague idea what caused it.

What would cause your reaction to cherries and raspberries? Do you get a running nose or something similar? When I think of a food reaction, I think of a horrible and bad and nothing good. On another note, I finally uploaded a video of me kicking. Remember how we were talking about form, ugly hands, and other bad postures. Please check it out and advise me accordingly. Thanks :D

Nah this reaction was bad news - itching, hives, abdominal pain, vomiting. I almost lost consciousness while I was trying to drive my ass to the hospital. It's so weird that an allergy like that would come out of nowhere.

I'll take a look at the video and post in your blog about it.

Oh I described the reaction in detail somewhere in my blog about a month ago. Not a fun time. But yeah I'm hoping that it was an isolated event.

I had my first solo session in a week today. It was rainy so I played in the gym.

Good session is good.

Routine practice. Feeling the style and timing start to come through.

Shuffle. I will own you atomics. Soon...ish.

Gyro clippers. Record is currently 5.

I’m not sure what possesses me to grind out so much shuffle lately. I don’t even find it to be a very interesting kind of shred to watch. But it just feels so epic. I should work on rubberman some more. Would be cool to be able to hit that on command.

I’ve been neglecting swirl practice lately. I should get back to that tomorrow. I need to start making midstring Ripsteins happen in my game.

There are so many things to perfect! Time is still on my side for now. I mustn’t squander it.

I can’t wait to live in a place with footbag people.

The weather was really nice today so I got to have a gazebo session. I ended up practicing my routine pretty much the whole time. It's starting to feel really good. I got a few run throughs with only one or two drops. Still working out kinks in the choreo but it should have dropless potential by the time ECFC rolls around.

I ended the session on with drill that felt really easy and awesome:

Fear>Atomsmasher rpt.

Here's a run from yesterday and one from today as well as that drill.

Looking forward to a chill weekend with lots of hooping and footbag things :D

Solo session again today!

Practiced my routine three times. The first time was 2 or 3 drops. The second, dropless (and I hit most of my cues). The last one was 4 or 5. Not bad. I already feel like I could hold my own in competition and I still have a full month to practice :)

Messed around with some different concepts like sets from outside and inside stalls. Hit a couple fun things.

Did some much needed Osis work and also finally drilled swirls a bit more.

Did a bunch more shuffle also. I really want all four sets bs in a run. Getting closer.

Walking around in converse has been really fucking with my feet and also giving me shin splints so it was time for an upgrade. I invested in a decent pair of shoes for walking. They are also the shreddiest casual shoes I’ve had before. They certainly aren’t Lavers but I can do pixie tricks and infinities in them fairly easily.

Image

These shoes are so comfortable! I’m hoping this will help with some of the soreness I’ve been experiencing lately.

Chill as fuck.

Great session today! I felt awesome!

I spent most of it just shredding for fun. Practiced my routine a few times.

Shuffle run with Pixie/Fairy/Atomic/Stepping BS>Handcatch

My bails seem to be getting more interesting which I really like. I accidentally bailed to Dada curve today and also nearly pulled of a bail to that weird inside rake trick (see video). Overall my game feels like it’s really coming together. I’ve been binging on rakes lately and I love it. They are such a stylish low energy trick.

Here’s some runs from today that are different from the ones I posted in the fb group.

At the end of my session I spent some time stretching in the grass and then hooped a little. Two girls randomly saw me and rolled up with their hoops!! One of them was pretty experienced. We jammed together for a while. She was surprised that I have only been doing it for a couple months. Hoopers are awesome like footbaggers. Only they are mostly girls! So cool

Most people have someone special in mind when they hear cheesy love songs. I'm usually thinking about footbag..

Chuck in a bit of quantum into that mixed bag run, and it will be awesome. Fun stuff with the hoops.

Yeah.. I don't want to talk about quantums. Not yet anyways ;)

Hooping - the secret to making friends.

Today was a rough day at school. I realised I made a really silly oversight that cost me some time and energy. Luckily I caught it and can do damage control before my prof finds out. It had me kinda bummed out though so I ended up coming home from school and gearing up for a session even though I wasn’t planning to play today. It was that or be bummed out and take a nap which would be lame.

So yeah. I geared up to shred, grabbed my hoop, and headed to the park across the road. Not 5 minutes into my warm up a whole gaggle of teenagers came by the park to do whatever high school kids do in parks. Mostly talk shit it would seem.

One of them saw my hoop and asked to try it out. Of course I obliged. Next thing I know I have half a dozen teenagers hanging out in the grass next to my shred spot. Just jamming with my beats and drinking their slurpees. So fucking random.

They were talking about being broke and one of them was like “well she has money” (referring to my iphone and nice speaker) and I replied, “yeah I’m probably about ten years older than you.” They were shocked that I’m 25 - they thought I was like 16. Cool.

I do not miss being a teenager. They really helped cheer me up because it made me remember how secure and comfortable with myself I am.

They had so many random questions for me. They were fascinated by things that are just normal parts of life for me now. I happily gave them explicit answers and tried to impart some life advice while I was at it.

Some of them ended up doing some yoga with me but they mostly kept getting distracted and yelling at eachother.

As a result the session just ended up being chill messing around and stuff. I still had a good time and it was probably best because I didn’t do my body any damage. I did my routine for them once - 3 drops but pretty decent overall.

Just so this blog entry isn't a wall of text here is a photo from a recent FAT sesh:

Image

I also had a seperate more chill hooping session this morning at school. I found a really nice, shady, low traffic grass spot on campus. I have much more control now and I am getting pretty good at a few different transitions and things. I’m starting to feel a style emerge.

I think being bothsided will be a good thing for my hooping game. Most hoopers are really one-sided so it will give me a unique edge.

Seriously though. I’ve met so many new people through hooping already. It’s awesome. I just have to show up at a park with my hoop and I attract cool random people.

Thanks! Pickup ending on inside is Guay and Fairy set from inside is called Neo set. They are fun and not too common. I think I learned this set before Fairy but I spent more time practicing Fairy so I'm better at it.
