Yeah man! Excited to meet you at East Coasts. We can have DLO battles.

Weather continues to suck here. Its raining as we speak. I've been so exhausted by work though, that I don't even know it matters that much.

I have a butt ton of travel coming up in the next couple months. I'll be in Vegas next week, which is cool, but also sucks since Evan is still in europe. Hoping to hook up with Overbo and Skaggs if they are free. Then the next week I'm in central Washington. I also have a trip in September where I'll be in Boise, so I'm making plans with Penske for then. I hope all this travel doesn't mess up my video/routine prep too much.

Any time Nick.

East Coasts should be a lot of fun. I'm a little worried about whether I'll be able to prepare sufficiently. I have to do 4 weeks of travel between now and East Coasts, and its always tough to play or practice while on travel. What does work in my favor is that I've already selected my routine songs, and I've at least started mentally working on the choreo for both. That said, I'm going to need to be diligent with my preparation if I'm going to do a routine I'll be happy with.

On the travel front, I'm actually writing this on the road. I'm spending this week in Las Vegas, going home to Denver for 1 day, then going to central Washington for a week. Las Vegas is too hot to play outside even in the evenings. I got in a session on my first day because there was a monsoon, but while that made it cool enough to play, it also meant it was super humid and the cloud cover meant I couldn't film well.

It's really weird being in Las Vegas and not seeing Gatesman. I reached out to the other players here, but they aren't meeting up with me. Evan not being here is also a painful reminder that I'm missing Worlds this year. Even with the wedding this summer, I think I could have gone to Worlds if they had made the announcement earlier. I've never been to Paris (and I really want to go), and based on the turnout I bet I could have made Finals again, so its doubly painful that I'm missing it. :x

I'm really hoping Amsterdam wins the bid for next year. I'd love to go to Worlds there. I'll be 35 at next year's Worlds, and who knows if I'll have kids in the next few years...I feel like I can't afford to miss any more Worlds for the next couple years.

The abysmal weather I've had since buying the GoPro has slowed my video project, but I've already accumulated enough usable footage that I'm starting to think about how the video will turn out. There are a few clips I'm very proud of, and some original ideas in there...but there are also some tricks/combos I want to re-shoot either with better backgrounds, or just getting them cleaner. One concern that has emerged for me though, is that all my clips are clearly tripod based. I've varied up some of the shooting angles, but even with that you can't escape the stationary camera. I'm not a talented enough video editor to hide that easily either. I wish I had people to play with who could film me. I guess I could try and do that at East Coasts, but I want to release my video before then so I can focus on routine prep, and if I do good routine prep, I may not be able to hit some of my bigger stuff on demand anyway. I really don't know what to do about this. At this stage, I think my goal should just be to see what else I can get on film before I switch over to tournament prep in a few weeks. My worst case scenario is I release a video with some good shred content but shitty editing, which wouldn't be the end of the world. If I'm being honest though, I want a quality video that I can watch after I retire, and see my best tricks/game in HD quality with a nice music track and decent editing. Basically Upular but with furious tricks and better visual quality. We'll see what's possible.

No new video from me this entry, since I don't have any edited footage I can post. Instead, here's a cool video of Worlds 2012 Tuukka made. I was pleasantly surprised with how I played on this, especially considering my main memory of Worlds 2012 was never beating my jet lag, and never playing at the level I wanted.

Do you know something we don't know, maybe at your old age you have gained some extra wisdom... (though I'm not far behind in the years). And am definitely hoping to be at Worlds next year.

My hope is that they announce it and lock in a date before Worlds ends. That would be very nice of them.

Las Vegas trip was pretty terrible footbag wise. First day here there was a monsoon, which cooled things down enough I could play at dusk. It was still hot and humid, but that ended up being the best day I'd get for footbag. Every other day after that it was too hot even at dusk for footbag. I'm talking 110 plus degrees even at dusk. After the second evening of hot weather, I decided to go to bed early and wake up early the next day to play. To my credit, I did go to bed early, and I even woke up early and forced myself to play. I played at 5:30 this morning, and it was very pleasant temperatures. It was a bit dark out, but visibility and temperature wise it was actually not that bad. Unfortunately, my body really struggled to play without food. Mentally I felt awake and OK, but my body felt like it was asleep the whole time. I ended up pulling a muscle in my ribs at some point, which really sucks. I made an effort to play footbag, and I got rewarded with an injury. Shit. It doesn't feel like a bad injury though, so hopefully I can recover by resting a few days.

Between the injury and all the travel I have before East Coasts, I'm thinking about transitioning to routine mode already. I was originally planning on chasing big highlights/backgrounds for a couple more weeks, but I think I have enough good footage that I can probably make a decent video already. That said, I still have doubts that my editing ability is good enough to hide the fact that all the footage is tripod. While I probably won't chase any big tricks anymore, I may try and get a couple runs shot with handheld if I can work that out.

On that note, I ran into Jeremy Benton on facebook, and it sounds like he's still in the area and interested in getting back into kicking. I remember kicking with him back in the summer of 2001, and I think I last saw him at East Coasts 2002. It'd be cool if he gets back into it, cause I could really use a shred partner.

In other news, I want to give Taishi Ishida a shout out. He made Finals in routines at Worlds this year, and is the first Japanese player to make Finals. He's worked really hard, and its awesome to see that paying off. I still remember meeting him in 2003 when he could only do toe stalls, so to see him reach this level...just really proud of him. :)

Taishi is doing great, it's obvious that all his performance lately is really paying off.

Saw he was also the only one to do a dropless shred 30 as well. That is pretty impressive considering the competition.

Who's competing in Shred 30 at Worlds this year? Vasek, Gatesman, Aleksi, Blau? Who won? Fucking motherfucking Taishi Ishida. Japan has won a gold medal at footbag Worlds. This is one of the happiest days for me in footbag that I can remember. :D

A while back (like 8 months ago), Dan Boyle and Anz made posts in their blogs where they posted videos of themselves at various points in their careers (3 year intervals), and used that as a way of analyzing the evolution of their games. I thought this was super cool, so I decided to do something similar.

I first started playing footbag in 1997. Back then, filming footbag wasn't nearly as easy or common as it is now. You had to get somebody with a dedicated video camera, and the footage usually ended up on a VHS tape if you were lucky. I think the first real footage of me to end up on VHS was on one of Eli's videos that had 1999 Worlds footage. Something around then. I think the first internet vid of my shred was on the dallas site, with all the 99 Worlds clips. Didn't exactly set the world on fire.

Let's start off with 2000 then. At this stage I had been playing for 3 years, and I was feeling pretty good about my game. Remember, this was back when almost nobody had a flipside (Genz and Lon were the first I remember who did), and concepts like tripless or genuine hadn't really seeped into the footbag consciousness. I was 20 years old, skinnier than Norek, and all I wanted to do was go as hard as I could:

Montreal, 2000. Wow. Where to even start with this? First off, I'm wearing lavers. I still remember how those pinched my feet, but at the time the only alternative I was aware of were Tevas, which I was NOT going to play in. Then there's the leggy atomic. I almost forgot that I used to do crazy leggy atomics like Sunil...and then for a while I was doing leggy atomic with right leg, and hippie with my left. Like I said, not the most balanced game. Slurry stepping from right clipper, and weird weird spinning sets. But not everything is bad in the clip either. The run is very dense by 2000 standards, and I'm clearly passionate and fired up about the sport as evidenced by the high fives at the end. Shortly after this clip though, I got burned out on the sport, culminating in a horrible 2000 Worlds for me. I walked away from the sport for 6 months, but thankfully I came back. I forced myself to re-learn a lot of my basics, and my game went in a much better direction because of that.

Tokyo, 2003. 3 years later, its 2003 and I'm in Japan. This clip is from Tokyo Shredder Gathering 2, which is one of Japan's 2 main tournaments along with Japanese Champs (both started in 03, and have happened every year since). My form is a lot tighter than in the 2000 video, but its still pretty one sided. Hardly any left toe at all. My linking is a bit smoother though and there's less bailing. Flip stepping looks better, but I think my strong spins switched? They were both weak either way. This was one of my first times doing dropless in any sort of footbag comp, which explains the enthusiasm at the end. Still, I'm 6 years into playing and I'm still as excited as ever. I think that helped me continue playing, but also helped me plant the seed for a footbag community in Japan too.

Ithaca, 2007. Close to 4 years since the last clip, and a lot has changed. Most notably, I'm playing in G-Units now. I know a lot of people say Units make your style worse, but for me at least I think my style clearly improved in them. Most likely because they didn't hurt my feet. At this stage, I had been playing for 10 years. While I may not be as spry as I was when I was 20, I definitely am better at managing my stamina. My runs are definitely longer than at earlier stages in my game, and there's more variety and bothsidedness too. There's still not a lot of flip toe though, and still some struggles with getting clean steps.

2010 Upular:

Denver, 2010. About 3 years since the previous vid. Videowise this is a new era, as I finally have my own camera and editing software. I was as proud of this for the editing as for the shred. Shredwise I think there's some progress with my spins, and overall my flow is a little smoother than when I was at Ithaca. The beasts and some of the bigger tricks also show some improvement in my game. I was also really excited to shoot a video in HD.

I've made a few videos since Upular, but none that I consider milestone markers of my game. Part of that is due to not having a good camera since my last real one broke about a year ago. Part of that stems from losing my old laptop, and with it my good editing software (I made Upular with Adobe Premiere). I'd also say part of it was due to my intense focus on routines the past few years, which meant I wasn't pushing my shred game as hard. This summer though I bought a nice GoPro, and since I skipped USO and Worlds I was able to push my shred game more and also make time for filming. With East Coasts coming up in 6 weeks, I'm going to shift back to focusing on routines, but now that I have good footage for a video, I'm hopeful I can get another milestone video made. I've got a good editor lined up, I've got good clips, and it's been 4 years...so I think the time is right to get another made.

wow ivan, what did i just watch. hahaha

damn ken, you were ripping three years in.

I have always loved your enthusiasm and motivation to push your game. I think my favorite part of your game today is the toe barrages. Im glad that you hit them in a lot of your strings since i dont see many other peeps doing it. I know landes was all about it a couple years back (and he probably still is). Do you think you could hit toe johnny? It would be nice to see someone else hit it besides jay on that one video. I know that you can hit toe flurry. whadaya say mayne?

Thanks for the video Ivan! And thanks for the kind words Boats. I have slacked off on the toe barrages lately, but I can skool them before ECFC so they're in good shape when we play. Toe jani is insane...I don't even know how I'd approach that. Toe HPD on the other hand, seems like it could be do-able. Probably also insane, but less so.

Not a lot of footbag on my end lately. I injured my rib while in Vegas a few weeks back, took a week off completely while I was in central Washington the next week, came back to Denver and tweaked my neck, recovered, and then I popped my rib again. Wow. So in general just a horrid string of injuries and shitty weather, which means very little footbag.

Here's a clip of the only full session I've managed in like the last month:

In good news, my rib is feeling better. I'm going to rest it a couple more days, and when I come back to footbag I'm going to dedicate at least one session to only tiltless. Then next session will be guiltless with no uptime. Then after that routine components, etc. I am done filming hard tricks for my video. I'm hoping to shoot a few scenic/candid shots so my editor has some filler to work with, so the video doesn't end up being 3 minutes of non-stop footbag.

Speaking of the video, I'm pretty excited about it. Before my string of injuries and travel hit, I managed to shoot a few decent handheld clips. My editor is also confident he can make some of the existing tripod footage look less static too. This weekend we also finally picked a song, and I've sent him almost all the footage via dropbox. Its weird...I've looked at the same clips so many times over the past couple months, that I don't even get excited by the content. But being objective, I think there's a lot of good stuff in there. Like, if you had shown me any of those clips 3-4 months ago, I would have been really pumped about them. I'm looking forward to seeing the final product and sharing it with people soon, but really I don't think I'll fully appreciate it until a few months pass and I watch it again with fresh eyes.

East Coasts is just over 5 weeks away. I'm still injured, and I've barely played for the past month...and yet I'm not freaking out about competing. I've got my songs picked out, and the rough choreo in my head already. Hopefully I recover well, get serious about practicing, and just focus on routines. I'm a little worried about circle, since I always tend to push my limits in that event, and pushing my limits is what popped my rib last week. Depending on how my body feels leading up to the event, I might decide to only compete in routines. My preference though would be to compete in everything.

Weather and work continue to conspire against me playing. I can't remember another summer that was worse weather-wise for footbag. It's really frustrating. :?

East Coasts is in 5 weeks, and I have done 0 run throughs of my routines. I've also barely played for the past 3 weeks. Oh, and I just calculated that between now and East Coasts I have to do 3 work trips, which will mean 10 days on the road. It's going to be pretty tough to get into good competition shape in 5 weeks, especially with all that travel. Hopefully I can get back into game shape quickly, and with a little discipline and luck I won't embarrass myself too badly at East Coasts.

While it sucks that my job has made it hard to train for tournaments over the past couple years (remember the business trip where I had to walk 10 hours a day in steel toed boots, the day before flying to USO 2012?), that same job also gives me the economic means to fly to tournaments in the first place. So while it can be inconvenient and has probably cost me a couple placements in tournaments, it has also enabled me to attend those tournaments at all.

If the weather doesn't shit on me tomorrow, I'm hoping I can film a couple scenic/candid shots for use as filler in my next video. Once I do that, my editor will have everything he needs to work with. I'm pretty excited for the final product. Hopefully I can get some nice final shots for him.

I think you hit on a key point for all players. ...a job can take out critical training time, but it can also give the dollars to get you to the tournament.

I think you have the experience to go fine with minimal preparation anyway.

Rained again after work today, but I played in the gym. That was probably a good thing though, since it was my first full session in a couple weeks. I would have been tempted if the weather was nice to film for my video, but since I was forced to play indoors it kept me from playing too hard. I spent the first 30 minutes just drilling tiltless, which is exactly what I needed. Hell, I probably should have spent the whole session just on tiltless, but I get impatient. Highlight from that was hitting 70 alternating clippers, which isn't bad considering how out of shape I am now.

Towards the end of the session I messed around with some light runs, and nothing felt weird. That's promising for sure. Tomorrow morning I'm going to go out and do my first run throughs of my East Coast routines. I fully expect them to be brutal, but I'm going to force myself to film them so I can see what has potential to work, and what doesn't.

Played Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and overall I feel good. That's a good sign for sure.
C-Fan wrote: Tomorrow morning I'm going to go out and do my first run throughs of my East Coast routines. I fully expect them to be brutal,
Saturday and Sunday I did my first routine run throughs. As expected, they were pretty rough. Strike one against me is all the time I took off, so my stamina just isn't at routine levels yet. The other factor working against me is that I don't know my choreography/queues yet. Once you get those down it helps a ton in terms of energy management. I'm optimistic though that if I continue to practice and film my practices, the choreo will take better shape and I'll be able to make it to the end of my routine more often. Originally my plan was to prepare 2 routines, but there's just no time to do it. I think the better bet is to really prepare my finals routine solid, and just wing it in the first round at East Coasts. Even with that less ambitious plan, I still have my work cut out for me. 10 days of work travel between me and East Coasts, and my stamina needs a lot of work. I actually threw up after one routine run through today. While that's gross, I think it also shows that I'm pushing myself hard, which hopefully will pay off.

In other footbag developments, this weekend I also finished filming the last clips for my video. In a nice unexpected surprise, I hit a trick that i haven't hit since 2009. Came out of nowhere, but I managed to hit it cleanly on video twice, so thats going on the video.

Here's a short video of some stuff I hit on Saturday after routine practice:
