Hey remember when I went to NYC for New Years with Zach and Alex? Well I do. What a trip!

Hey Ken, here is another fart pose photo. Just for you! This time featuring the one and only Drew Martin. Actually now that I consider it, anyone in this photo could be letting one rip..

Image

Today was a weird day. Not sure there’s even much point in writing about it. Blogging seems to have become a form of therapy for me though so I guess I shall proceed.

School was productive thankfully. Managed to leave at a decent time.

I wasn’t planning to play again but then I did, again. Back to the park across from my house. It was one of the more humid days this summer. Not nearly as bad as the humidity I experienced at PSU back in July though.

During my warm up a random little girl came to the park. She appeared to be walking her bunny. Yeah that’s right, she had a rabbit on a leash. So random. She watched me play for a bit while her bunny was busy doing bunny things.

The majority of the session was spent on my routine today. It was kind of frustrating because I should be able to go dropless but I’m averaging about 3-5 drops. At the beginning of the session I dropped mostly because I forgot my choreography. Then as the session progressed I was dropping because I was tired but the choreo was more on point. I feel like I’m running out of time and it’s just not quite where I want it to be.

I know this routine can be awesome. But what’s the point if they end up holding open routines last at ECFC? Last year I spent the whole day shredding Saturday and then it was time for routines when I was pretty much burned out. I cried after because I was so frustrated with my performance. I don’t want to put all this work into a routine just to screw it up because I’m exhausted and the surface sucks. I might as well save it and do it justice at some other event down the road.

I will not hold back on casual shred for the sake of competition. No freaking way.

On the topic of deodorant/antiperspirant and personal hygiene

I wasn’t necessarily trying to convince anyone to stop using these products if they work for them. I just want to point out that such personal care products have only been on the market for about 100 years and there isn’t much literature on the long term health effects of chronic application of this stuff to your skin. For me, it’s pretty pointless since I don’t even sweat that much from my armpits.

With respect to body odor in footbag, I think it sort of comes with the territory. If you’re offended by sweaty dudes you are probably in the wrong sport. That being said, I know some dudes that get pretty damn sweaty and I have never been so offended by someone's odour that I felt the need to leave a circle. Clearly most people are sweating from places not limited to their pits so why not just bathe in deodorant :P

But for real, if someone smells that bad it seems more likely to be a result of failing to wash their shred clothes or themselves recently rather than failing to apply deodorant.

So yeah, those are just my thoughts about that. I'm actually kind of curious if a footbag event would be significantly more offensive without deodorant.

I'm going to be on my way to the airport to pick up Chris Dean in 2 days! Crazy. Life is a trip and I am so looking forward to my next adventure :D

Never mind East Coasts. The best event of the year is going down this weekend. I can feel it. The good vibes are coming. I am SO EXCITED!

I guess footbaggers are trained professionals at looking like they cut some cheese. What? Walking a bunny at the park, how awesome. Rather enjoy unplanned sessions, no expectations. You have plenty of time to get those drops to zero, or at least, one. That's my fear of routines, nothing left in the tank for sideline shred (Which is what any event is about). Good you brought it up, now I think things are proper. I concur. But, I shoveled chicken feces for 4 months, and know some homeless peeps. So, my smell tolerance is up there. Jealous that, yet again, you are at another event! Especially cause the Deanster is PIMPin'.

Haha thanks Derek that post was just all over the place :P The Deanster is totally PIMPin' though.

Gathering of Irregular Movers: Paris (GIMP)

Thursday night I had the opportunity to pick Chris Dean up from the airport! It was great to see him again, especially since I didn’t expect to see him so soon after USO. He came to school and hung out on campus while I got my work done Friday. In the afternoon I got to have a 2 man sesh with him! The weather was beautiful and it was a really enjoyable shred. Chris makes shuffle look sooo good.

That evening we headed to Toronto to meet up with Erik, Alex, and Camille. Once my car (and trunk) was at full capacity we made the relatively short trip to Paris Ontario. Paris is a quaint place with a really nice atmosphere. Kristin and Johnny live behind a business with their backyard overlooking downtown.

Image

When we arrived Johnny was just getting back from picking Adam up from the bus station (since my car was full). It was so nice to be back at this awesome place with such great people.

We sat around a campfire and had a chill evening. Normally I don’t spend too much time detailing what I eat at events but the food at this one was definitely worth mentioning. Kristin made us some freaking amazing nachos. Every time I went in the house I was hit in the face with the delicious smell of garlic. So much avocado. So good.

Alex and I were the last ones awake Friday. It had been a while since I’ve seen him so it was good to spend some time.

They had a tent set up for us with really comfy cushions to sleep on. Best sleep I’ve ever had in a tent with five other people.

Everyone was up at a decent time Saturday. There was tons of delicious fresh fruit, vegetables, peanut butter, and zucchini banana walnut bread for breakfast. The coffee was amazing but also really strong. It kicked my ass in the best possible way.

Here's part of their awesome garden.

Image

The whole morning was really chill. There was no rush to be anywhere which was nice. I went for a little walk by the river with Adam, Alex, Erik, and Chris.

Here’s a photo of everyone watching some guy in the river catch a fish.

Image

Lunch was rice with a whole bunch of yummy vegetables. More avocado. Om nom nom.

Jay boychuk arrived! It was really good to see him finally!

After lunch everyone geared up to play some footbag. The shred spot was a few blocks away. We played on a stage in a park that was over some bathrooms. It was a pretty decent spot although the surface was rather unforgiving.

Image

I think my favourite part was near the beginning when I had a circle with Jay and Johnny. Chris also joined after a while. Amaze.

Image

It was really hot.

Image

I was pretty sore from shred the day before with Chris (no regrets there) and not taking enough rest time this week. I didn’t play that well as a result. It’s going to be tough but I really need to take some time off footbag to allow my body to heal up.

Image

At the end of the session Camille wanted to go swimming so I agreed to go to the pool with her. It started raining just as everyone was leaving the covered shred spot. We didn’t actually know where the pool was located and ended up giving up on the idea. Camille and I took a nice walk through Paris and ended up taking a roundabout route. We had some nice conversation along the way and ended up cutting through a school that took us to Johnny’s back yard. Convenient. Aside from having to hop the fence in sandals.

Dinner was a super delicious vegan pumpkin chili. Yum.

I passed out for a while because I was beat from the session. I woke up in time to say goodbye to Jay.

One of the highlights of the event was definitely battle hoops. They had these massive heavy hoops that are meant more as a workout hoop I guess.

Image

To footbag people it only made sense to battle with them! This was such a fun time. The idea is to attack each other with the hoops and knock the other persons hoop down while keeping your own going. People who don’t even hoop that well were kicking ass in battles. I’m pretty sure Erik was the hoop battle champion. I had one really intense battle with Alex that lasted pretty long but I came out victorious in that bout.

Image

Johnny and Kristin were able to borrow a massive sound system for the party Saturday night. It was awesome. We rocked out to some sick drum n bass beats all evening. Some more people came out to party that night and a good time was had by all. I spent a bunch of time hooping which became more and more dangerous on the slopey back yard the more I drank.

Adam gave me props for one of my hooping ‘runs’ this weekend which was cool. I also got props from Kristin on my improvement which was awesome! We talked about hooping a bunch. I’m really looking forward to checking out some events. They sound so amazing!

What an awesome time hanging out by the fire with good music and great people!

I had some more really good talks with Alex. He’s usually such a joker but he’s also one of my favourite people to talk about real shit with. We want different things at this point in life but we’re both pretty open minded and I really value his perspective.

There was also some talk about East Coasts. It sounds like I might be able to fill my car up for the trip :) I have to get some details sorted out still.

Sunday I woke up early and no one was awake so I showered and went back to sleep. I woke up again and Adam was the only other person awake. Everyone rose pretty late that day. I probably should have made more of a ruckus to get people moving.

No one wanted to play footbag with me so I shredded alone for a while on the concrete near the fire pit where Adam, Erik and Alex were chilling. It was really hot again so I didn’t play too long. I wanted to do spinning stuff. This kept making my hangover kick in and I would lose balance after a few attempts. It still felt good to play.

The morning was pretty chill. Spent some time hooping and consuming vast quantities of water. Johnny got up around 11. The place was a bit of a mess from the party so I helped clean up a bit. Johnny made us some potatoes and poached eggs in his underwear (no complaints about that). There was also more fruit and peanut butter and things. And some really awesome smoothie! Actually this was the third delicious smoothie of the weekend. Yum!

We ended up in a bit of a crunch for time since a lot of people slept late. Kristin was upset that no one woke her up and I felt bad about that. It would have been nice to spend more time with her. We didn’t get a chance to do yoga together which would have been really nice.

Around 2:30 I said goodbye to Adam and our wonderful hosts. We packed up the car and headed to Hamilton to drop Chris off. This goodbye wasn’t as difficult as the last time I had to say goodbye to him. I know we will meet again in less than a month :)

I was pretty beat for the drive home. Trying to coordinate things at events and get people moving when there is a time limit can be pretty stressful sometimes. It’s nice to have a full car but it also requires a little more management and being on top of people to get organised sometimes.

Overall it was just really great to spend a relaxing, intimate weekend with such wonderful friends. It is also really refreshing to eat well at an event. Unquestionably the best food at an event ever. Johnny and Kristin worked really hard. Next time I think they need to reach out for help more so that they have more of an opportunity to really enjoy the experience. They were absolutely incredible hosts though.

It was nice that there was no competition to worry about at this event. I didn't even mind that minimal shred happened. This weekend was a fabulously relaxing and fun way to cap off another incredible summer.

Went down to the lakefront and spent some time doing hobby type things today.

Lots of hooping. A little juggling. About ten minutes worth of hack in the grass. Yoga was the best part. So relaxing.

I had my best flipside hoop run ever today. That was cool. Things are progressing smoothly.

I’ve been thinking a lot about foothooping. I think there is some very real potential in that area. I will need a smaller hoop though. I wish I had thought to try it over the weekend when I had the opportunity.

It's so difficult to resist shred! I am going to attempt to not play until the weekend. We'll see how that goes.

Yeah I'm workin' on it Kevin ;)

I managed not to play footbag today. It was rainy so that helped but also deterred me from hooping.

I thought I would take this post to reflect on (brag about) all the cool footbag things I’ve done this summer. Going through the last bunch of pages in my blog has been a massive dose of nostalgia.

PSU Jamps! This was more spring but I’ll start with that anyways. Cool event. Fun road trip with awesome people. Great start to event season.

Visiting Jorden in Hamilton and getting schooled.

Pennsylvania Invitational Net Champs. This event was one of the best events of the year for me. Really special.

Many FAT sessions! Notable guests included Andrew Dunford and Roy Klein.

Oshawa session with Erik Chan

Picnic on Toronto island with the whole FAT family!

Erie Pennsylvania trip with Ryan Thomas!

US Open!!! This was the best trip of the year hands down! So much love and positivity and crazy awesome shred.

EPIC skydive footbag adventure camp! Probably second to USO. This event was an amazing time and an incredible learning experience for me. I’m not sure how I’m going to top this one but I’ll find a way :D

Milestone: Hitting rubberwoman

PSU Arts Fest Jam! Fun little impromptu event. Glad I made the trip for sure.

Joliette footbag jam! A fun little trip to Quebec. Small jam, good vibes. Tam tam.

Pre-birthday shred with FAT and partying with Johnny, Kristin, and especially Adam! Birthday shred with Erik. You guys are all the best.

Shredding and chilling with Johnny Breakdown and Doug Tank in Buffalo! Another really cool, interesting experience.

One-on-one shred with Chris Dean!

Gathering of Irregular Movers: Paris! Another great event with amazing chill vibes. Probably ties for third best event of the summer (with PA net champs). Best event food evah.

By my count that’s a good 10 or so events with a nice sprinkling of other neat sessions. What a phenomenal summer. I feel so blessed to have had all these opportunities and learning experiences. Every single event and session is a source of inspiration. I have learned so much about footbag and about myself and others through these experiences. I've definitely made sacrifices to make all this happen. It's not that I'm simply lucky (although I am that too) but I make footbag a high priority in my life. I have to give a shout out to Caroline Birch. She inspired me HUGE last year at worlds. She definitely has played a large part in my choice to make footbag my life.

I still have some really cool sessions on the horizon before ECFC happens! To be honest I’m starting to get burned out on the event going business. I’m actually so ready for winter. Bring on the solo training sessions, bulking, and hibernation. Saving for my travels next summer starts immediately after East Coasts.

I think I have my priorities straight :D

Today was a weird day.

My work was accepted (after three tedious sets of revisions) for video publication in the Journal of Visualized Experiments!

I got a much needed ego check. It was a little hard to swallow but definitely a good thing.

It’s frosh week and campus is slammed with fresh meat. It’s definitely a different atmosphere that I’m going to have to get used to. There are so many people around!

This is a super decent semester for me. I’m teaching two 1.5 hour tutorials on the same content I covered last year. One seminar and one group meeting per week on top of my usual research. Should be way chill compared to last year.

I officially have a four day weekend for ECFC! Stoked that I will be able take in the whole experience this time!

I threw a disc around with a few friends at school. That was a lot of fun. Beautiful day. I made some good flipside improvement.

I was in kind of a funk so I shredded about it. I played footbag just for the love of the sport. It was a nice short session.

I think I needed a break from my routine. I was starting to feel some animosity towards it. I’ll revisit that next week. Or maybe I’ll just forget about it until competition time. I’m not sure it’s worth fussing over.

There’s one trick that has been a long time coming. Today I hit Vortex first try! It felt so right. I had some decent flipside attempts.

I wasn’t planning to go to the FAT session this weekend but then I got invited to go out for a friends birthday downtown Friday night. I hadn’t seen that friend group in a while so I took the train out to Toronto to meet up with them. These were actually friends I know through my ex. While I have no hard feelings about that relationship anymore I have to say it was pretty satisfying to find out that nobody cares for his new girlfriend (the girl he left me for). They actually went camping a few weekends ago and invited me instead of him. I didn’t end up going but it felt good to be included as a friend to those people even though I’m not involved in that relationship any longer. It’s also cool to have random friend groups to hang out with occasionally even if I don’t see them very often.

Unfortunately they chose the worst bar ever to go to. It was kind of unfortunate that we went to a gross top 40 club when we could’ve gone anywhere in Toronto. I always feel like I have to keep my guard up in places like this but I made the best of it anyways.

The crash space I was offered was reminiscent of a footbag event. I ended up sleeping on what was essentially a footstool for about three hours. When the sun came up I was wide awake. Before anyone else as usual. I got dressed and burned on the 29th floor balcony, enjoying the early morning view.

Image

I got my things together and headed out into the city. Rather tired and hungover with a solid four hours to kill before the noon footbag session. I walked around the U of T campus a bit, popping into Bahen to see if there was anywhere comfortable to pass out. No luck there. Found myself at a public library where I chilled out and listened to music for a bit.

Image

This was a rather curious object. I wonder what its purpose was. I should probably Greenwood it..

Image

Took myself out for breakfast at Sneaky Dee’s because I’m predictable like that.

Image

That place is just so great though.

Image

Walked around Kensington market for a while. That place has great vibes. Random guys were on one of the corners by the park there. Straight up asking passers by if they wanted to buy weed.

Arrived at Trinity Bellwoods early and took a nap on a park bench. That was a first. As it got closer to session time I moved over to the meeting spot and sprawled out on the grass.

I heard longboard wheels on the ground and I had a feeling. Yep, it was Camille..I greeted her groggily and before long Erik arrived and we got started.

Shred was fun. Erik was just tearing it up. Such intensity. I didn’t play to hard but I had a good time. Eriks new girlfriend stopped by and we met her. She seems great!

Camille was busting out some nice rakes which was cool to see.

Alex arrived about an hour late with a friend from out of town. I was mostly spent by this point but I shredded a bit more after that. He’s definitely been improving lately.

The new bluetooth speaker I got has been an absolute lifesaver. It’s so freaking sweet. I use it more than I thought I would. For footbag sessions, hooping, just randomly chilling with friends. So great.

I didn’t have any cool highlights really but I did manage to end on a really solid 30ish? contact run. It felt good to call it a session on a high note.

I dipped early from the session cause I wanted to get home and get a few hours sleep before my plans saturday night (or else I would have just passed out early and not gotten back up).

I think I did a pretty good job taking it easy shred-wise this week. I still played but I didn't have any super intense sessions. Yesterday I was too hungover/tired to really push myself which was probably actually beneficial. I didn't feel any soreness which is encouraging.

I went to Oakville today to shred with Jay Boychuk!!

He made such a lovely blog post about it and I’m not going to be able to top that. You should probably stop here and just go read that instead.

It was an easy hour of highway driving to get to my destination. A real fancy park in upper middle class suburbia.

Image

The shred spot was right on the lakefront. Gorgeous day. Great view.

There was no shade but it wasn’t too hot so playing in the sun was bearable.

Jay wanted me to have a picture of myself in my blog for a change.

Image

This was my best session in terms of raw shreddy goodness since USO!! So fucking good. I felt really strong and Jay is just so inspiring. He is damn good at footbag. He also gives really freaking good tips and has good ideas for stuff I can hit.

I watched Jay do a bunch of gyro clippers and was like “Oh, that’s how I should do it” and then I got 7 or 8 first try.

Ripstein dexes are feeling tight. I hit it out of Osis for the first time.

Shuffle felt good but my stepping is holding me back. I need to do something about that.

There’s just something about the intensity and intimacy of two man sessions that I absolutely LOVE. Today was just such a great day.

We sat under a tree and had a delightful picnic. Jay brought many different cheeses. I do love cheese. I really enjoyed talking to him about various things. We must’ve talked for 3 hours. I feel like I know the real Jay Boychuk now.

I can't even process the awesomeness of this day.

I managed to pack a lot of great activities into this weekend. Less time spent travelling = more time for fun!

Looks like a sick spot for a session. Really sounds like you're about to crack into the next level of shred. Congrats! It's always nice to see that next wall and then just obliterate it. I read Jay's blog too, and it sounds like your game has really upped since your last bits of footage. Best part is that you still have time to get even better before ECFC. I hope to see that come true.

Had a decent solo session today. My session with Jay yesterday was fantastic motivation. I took the opportunity to practice a few concepts that need work. I got Ripwalk x7. Not sure if that's my record. I should be able to do better. Flipside Osis>Ripstein.

Overall it was a pretty chill session. It’s nice to not worry about routines or badges or anything and just have fun playing and working on my form, flow, and style.

Afterwards I did a yoga 101 class. The first week of fitness classes at school are free so I figured I might as well check it out and see if I could learn something. Turns out yoga 101 is very much below my skill and fitness level.

The yoga instructor was entirely too enthusiastic. To the point where it was impossible to relax. She spent so much time talking in between poses that I didn’t get a workout at all. We only did one pose that was even remotely challenging (tree pose). I might try to hit up a vinyasa yoga class this week, perhaps that will be more my level.

After yoga I hit the weight room for the first time in ages. Did some abs and upper body stuff in an effort to compensate for the lack of workout that 50 minutes of ‘yoga 101’ entailed.

Fitness feels so damn good.

Teaching my first organic chemistry class of the semester tomorrow. Woo! :D

Looking tan in that picture jay took, must be hoopin and shreddin in the sun a lot, cali style.

Fun write-ups! I missed it earlier, but just saw the vortex highlight. soo awesome.
Reading about so many shred people I never to get to play with is fun for me.

lol yoga 101 experience, good job getting in a real workout after :)

I want to shred with Jay again (i guess it hasn't been that long tho), he brings out the best in people's shred. Sounds like a freaking awesome time and the shred location is beautiful! You should do this as often as you can, and I have a feeling you will.

I wouldn't worry about routines too much if I were you, after all its just east coasts. I try to have more fun with routines at any event that is not US Open or Worlds, the most fun I have every year with routines is at Green Cup! Form, flow and style training all the way.

Today has been highly productive and awesome.

Did a solid school shift 8-5. This included sitting through a decent forensic science seminar that actually held my attention in addition to teaching my first tutorial of the semester which went well.

All my school friends are dressing up as Pokemon characters for Hallowe'en. I will be Ash.

When it was finally time to play I had a nice hooping session in the commons at school. I’m at a point where I don’t mind doing it in front of people [which is convenient because I don’t have much choice now that classes are in session].

From there I headed to my shred spot and had a productive solo session.

Ripwalk x10 > handcatch
Whirl >Pdx Whirl rpt BS

I was practicing Ripstein out of Osis a bunch and my swirling sets were just feeling so right. They felt sort of the way a good Fairy set feels. I decided to try something different and managed to get Swirling Whirl BS!! There are many tricks to be hit from this set. Soon.

I also worked on all the different links for rubberman. The Legbeater>Blur link is definitely the challenge for me. Gotta dial that stepping set.

From there I headed to the vinyasa yoga class. This contrasted yoga 101 in the best possible way. It was so great that I might actually pay to keep going! The instructor went through the different modifications for flexible people like me so I was actually able to make it somewhat challenging for myself. She did a bunch of amazing poses for footbag including some intense triangle and pigeon poses which are the only two the I bothered to do before the yoga class just in case.

I can’t believe how many people are going to be at ECFC. Crazy.

Nice job on the Swirling Whirl and Whirl War drill. I think you should mess with Swirling Blinks and Swirling Reverse Swirls. I can see you getting good at those.

Shuffle sounds like it's just about yours. Props on that. It's a tough thing for a lot of people to grasp, including myself. I was kind of shocked that Leg> Blur was the tough link for you. The tough one for me is Atom> Leg. Interesting how difficulty differs amongst players. I think sticking that Legbeater for a split second is key for me, so you can assure yourself a nice step into Blur.

Good stuff, Cass. Keep it going.

Thanks Nick. Yeah, I just need to get good at stepping. That would help.

I played footbag today. It was kinda cold and super windy out - should have played inside.

Swirling Blink BS challenge from Jay and Nick so I had no choice but to get that
Swirling Rev Whirl also from Jay

I practised other things as usual.

It feels good to not worry about competition too much. The fact that Evan, Ken, Brian, and others will be at ECFC means I'm definitely going to get slaughtered so it takes the pressure off :D

After that I went to a power yoga class. That was some serious shit. It would have been great if it wasn’t directly after a footbag session and also my third yoga class in four days [when I don’t normally practise proper yoga]. Really intense poses and just hard work overall. My quads were screaming at me at certain points. My shoulders also aren’t accustomed to this much yoga. I’m going to really be feeling it tomorrow.

I signed up to keep doing the tuesday evening vinyasa class. Pretty pumped for that one. It’s perfect for my level and the instructor is great.

I found out there’s another hooper on campus. People were posting about her hooping on the ‘spotted at’ page for our school. She was hooping in a location I don’t generally frequent. But maybe I should! Hopefully I can jam with her some time.

This weekend!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHH!

I had a short rainy day gym shred this morning. Usually when there are no events going on at school the gym is overtaken by bballers and baton twirlers. I got in early enough today to carve out some gym space before it got too crazy.

First run of the day was over 2.5 minutes! Mostly stalls and tiltless stuff but with good variety and I wasn’t even really out of breath after! Felt good.

Mostly just drilled stuff. Wasn’t too exciting but it was productive.

I spent nearly as much time stretching after. Feelin’ good.

With regards the the fb thread List some tricks that you find very easy/that come naturally to you that others find to be difficult.

I thought about this a lot but I never replied to it. This is because there aren't any for me. I had to work hard for every trick in my repertoire. I just wanted to mention that because Bob Green said something similar in his blog. Footbag is hard. Nothing comes easy [for me].

I've been doing a lot of crank stretching lately. Hoping that will start to pay off soon.

Been playin’ this song on repeat today. Reminds me of someone I miss.

Much excitement is on the horizon.
