I've been gotten again by the Top-Poster.

Kevin: Matt's on druggz. I'm worried about him. He's been completely incoherent recently, just drawing really bad circles everywhere.

Ok, quick post with something kinda cool for me.

Was cleaning my room and for some dumb reason, I decided to put on Fourkast 2004 as background video/music. I ended up just watching intently and studying moves, like always. Saw Lon doing a Pixie from a really good angle. Had to try some.

Went outside with an old ass pair of beat old ass Lavers, since my good ones are drying. Finally washed them! :D They were getting gross. So yeah, I went to it in the middle of a dimly lit road, at 12:30 am.

Highlights:

 Pixie Legover x13 My previous record was x10.. kind of a lame number but the best thing about this was that I felt like I was so in control of these new Pixies. I could have kept going, but I wasn't breathing right and I hardly had a warm-up
 Far Whip x6! My previous record was only 2. Pretty happy with such nice level-uppiness in just one session. I was struggling with them for a bit there. I got 3, then said I wanted to get to 4. I got to 4 sometime after, but told myself it wasn't good enough, and that I had to hit 4 starting from both sides. I tried the other side and, 2 tries in, I hit 6. Then I tried some Barflies... Now I understand how Lon works.

Boston Jam this Friday!

Damn. Today's work day was hell. So busy. Didn't get out until almost 7. On a busy day, I get out at 6. I'm not going to talk about work anymore.

As soon as I got home, I met with Jeremy and we did our "every other day cross-training/recovery jog/walk". Had a nice chat about a bunch of random stuff on the jalk (jog + walk) and afterward, we met up at my place to set some deadlines for our project. We're both pretty excited about it.

Later on, I had a solo session. Basically just drilling/trying to figure out some tricky components. Made huge progress on Double Spinning Clipper tonight. I have been trying them for the past handful of weeks, but they appeared to be absent from my repertoire all of the sudden. I used to be ok at them, but I had trouble hitting a single one at PSU. I remembered that you have to start real slow, like a Spinning Clipper, then speed up after the first spin has been completed. That shocked my Dbl Spins into cooperation. Definitely got better at those tonight. I'm shooting to be really good at them by NYJ.

I was working on Inspins a little while ago and they were going well, but they had also disappeared. I thought maybe they were similar to my Dbl Spin problem. I was right. You have to do a slow speed half Inspin, then speed spin through the rest. I did some that felt like they might have looked similar to Allan's. Progress was made on those, too.

And I know I always say this, but I improved my Pdx Whirls tonight, too.. again :P I realized my main problem was that I was sliding STRAIGHT BACK, exactly like an Infinity. I think what you're supposed to do, is slide back and to the side, so that it lines up really well with your Whirl window. I did some Toe op Whirls and saw that they were really clean and felt like hardly any impact. I remembered in the Vasek Bible, Vasek says that Toe Whirl is the same as Pdx Whirl, just easier to get to the bag. That really helped me. I think I had a few good clean ones. Will keep at them and try to break my Whirler's block.

Some kinda ok (sorta?) highlights:

 Far Whip x7 (new personal record)
 Whip War
 Far Whip> Gyro Whip bs Cool link. So Lon.
 Toe Far Reverse Swirl> Mobius bs

Just trying to get a little bit better for Boston Jam. Pretty pleased with my game lately though. Strings weren't amazing tonight, but I was outside in the cold, under a dim light. And Alpine Stepping was way off tonight. Can't expect too much, I guess. I think I'll play well in Boston. I feel pretty good.

Can't wait for this week to end.

Really very quite a very pretty good session tonight. Nothing much to report aside from saying "this was a warm up session for Boston), so it'll just be highlights basically.

Highlights:

 Probably the best part: Pdx Whirls. I was being so dumb about them for 7, going on 8 years. I always moved straight back, like an Infinity. Now I move to the side and back a bit. BANG. So flakey and crisp. Pour some fuckin milk on those buhls. Started a dense run with Pdx Whirl x7. They all felt super low impact FOR ONCE!
 Tomahawk> Blender BSOS (Inspired by Hogan's ridiculous Toe Alpine Blurry Whirl)
 Mindbender (3rd ever) footed it twice on flipside. Damn. Still nothing. Getting closer though.
 Mobius> Far Reverse Swirl both sides
 9 contacts of Reverse Swirl War!!! Could only do 4 contacts every time I ever tried it
 6 contacts of Blink War
 Possibly a new World Record?: Pdx Reverse Swirl x5!!! Previous personal record was 3. So jolly-well hyped on that.
 Gyro Whirl> Reverse Swirl *rpt
 Tomahawk> Revup BS, then one run with Tom> Revup> string> Tom> drop on Revup

But yeah, basically, everything is feeling really sweet. My game is definitely better than it was last week. I also learned a lot from just watching Lon in the Fourkast 2004 video. He shreds it UP with like lots of long links of smaller tricks, like Gyro Whirl> Whip> Gyro Whip> Pdx Whirl> Drifter> Drifter> Ducking Clipper> Diving Osis etc.. That stuff isn't like super crazy BAP level hard, but it looks so damn good. So that's my new aim. ...Will definitely be trying Fearless stuff still though. Just not going to obsess over getting BIG links in my game right now.

Boston(ish)-bound starting tomorrow after work. Can't wait to hang with everyone again. Here we go...

That's insane, how does anything like that even exist. :D

Also, congratulations on your world record. You should put your name on the list, anyone can update it if I remember correctly. At least the one by Captain O'Wheel. God I haven't seen Stargate in a long time.

When you go for Fearless, let me know if you need any really cheap 5 ADDs, I have a list.

Nathan: Ianek has convinced me to try to drop the ADD system. So, no thank you for the cheap "fives". I may try to find that World Record page though. Got another world record tonight... on video this time.

Damn, so Boston Jam is over. It was a heaping handful of fun. Miss everyone already. I'll give a little list of highlights:

-Hanging out with Hogan again before meeting up with everyone
-Impromptu pants and non-shred shoe session in Hogan's driveway
-Jim is incredible
-Hogan and Sarah were awesome hosts to me the first day
-Sarah's awesome cats
-Sarah's fuzzy blanket thing and everything in her apartment having AWESOME textures.
-Beverly chocolate milk
-Meeting up with everyone at Bob's house, walking through the house and just seeing his family, then walking downstairs to the basement and seeing an underground shred session. Reminded me of the underground shred matches in Bring Out The Shred.
-General Hogan shenanigans
-Metting Crowley for the first time. That dude is so awesome. He's really a personality which I wish we could have at every jam
-Jim's "special run" (you'll see it in the xmas video ;)
-Blowing our noses after basement shred. Unbelievable amount of dirt/dust... AWESOME!
-Bob's meals. My favorite was the Egg Shit.
-Catching up with John Goode
-Being in a circle with Bijan and John where we could all do Double Spinning. That's a first.
-Awesome talks with Ianek about the sport and things Hogan and I could work on.
-Waking Kemmer up at 3 am every morning lolz
-Kemmer's execution is really sick
-Being inspired by Ianek and Boats
-Being in a different circle, but still witnessing a really fucking ridiculous Anchor/Dragon run from Cass
-Cramping and passing out in front of EVERYONE after dinner :/
-Geocaching with Hogan and Ianek and the talk we had on our trek.
-Watching Too Many Cooks and Totinos Pizza Freaks about 6 times each throughout the weekend
-Hogan butchering Jim's name on purpose "Jet Pensley", "Jeromiah Penelope"
-Best shred spot out of ay jam I've ever been to. Carpet, free water, free candy.
-Center-of-Balance 101 with Ianek
-Cool 360-filming with Mathieu & Boatz
-Bijan's style is really fun to watch
-Seeing the NH crew again. They've improved.
-Fire shred on Bob's patio
-Jim's engineering project in the basement
-Ianek's survey

There was just too much fun stuff at this jam. Great people, great place, great people.

Ianek's talks really cracked into my head this weekend. So many things to think about. So many good things to think about.

Anyway, I broke my own world record tonight. Check it..

So I have not taken a break since I got home from Boston Jam. Last night was the closest to a break I had. Well, I'll do something in order for once...

Monday (which was my last post, but I forgot to add some stuff):

Ianek opened my eyes to Flying stalls. Well, ever since I saw Hogan and Pete doing them, I was into them, I just had no Idea how the hell to do them until Ianek showed me. They're a lot less complicated (def not easy) than I ever thought. I'm kind of glad I came into them totally fresh so I get to experience that annoyingly rewarding feeling of learning a concept from the dead ass beginning. Since I've at least experimented with almost every trick, I haven't had this feeling in a while. But I love Flying stalls now. You'll be seeing them in my game from now on.. well, once I get good enough at them.

Tuesday:

Session with Bonslaver at our new gym "Shred Prison" spot. It looks a lot like a prison, in a cool way. Really good floors though, plus it's warm. This will be accounting for 2 of the Christmas Calendar days, FYI ;) Nate had a few good runs, but I think he tried too hard to play for the camera, and he sketched himself out a little. But the videos turned out pretty sweet. I was trying to go for variety and longer runs. I hit so many good 30+ contact-good variety runs that I'm actually really happy with. If I can play like that from now on, I'd be very pleased.

Wednesday:

This was hardly a session. I drilled a few things and did actually push numbers on some stuff. I got Xbd Rake x7 on strong and x3 on flip (needs improvement, I know). I've never actually really taken Rakes and said "Ya know, I want to do those, so I will drill them". I have always really enjoyed them, but never messed with them much. Also, realized the same thing about Axle. Pushed Axle x8 on strong, x5 on flip. I think I can push that higher. I'd kinda like to try to set a World Record on Axle one day. Fun trick and it feels so natural to me. Also drilled Flying stalls this night.

Thursday (tonight):

Really pleased with tonight's session. Went harder than last night. Drill session for a few things: Ianek told me I bail to Zoom too often, so I've been trying to get more tricks I can consciously hit after an Osis. Came up with Far Flapper. Hot ham-fuck. How have I never tried to do that? Probblay because I didn't really have a flip Flapper until Monday :P Anyway, it's brilliant. Flows so well. Also worked a ton on Swirls, near and far. Got some hey-yo-what's-up-lights.

Howdylights:

 Really proud of this one. Swirl War starting on each trick. So stoked on that. Swirl War is finally not so complicated. I hit it each time with good control.
 Far Symp Swirl x3! New record. Old record was 2. I want to push this one FAR.
 Clipper Far Symp Reverse Swirl bs, believe it or not.. this was the first time I ever hit it on flipside.
 Swifter BS! and almost BSOS! Far Symp Swirls helped me understand this one finally.
 Torque> Infinity Swirl bs
 Osis> Far Flapper> Spinning Butterfly in a nicely flowing BSOS

I turned the tv on, but put it on mute during this session. I had it on Japanese news with Aphex Twin playing on my computer. Pretty trippy stuff! But I really enjoyed it, so I'll be doing this again next time I drill in the ol' attic.

Funny story of how I found out about that Japanese channel:
~So my dad recently got promoted to some position in his company where he works primarily with the Japanese branches of the company. I guess he has to sit in on Japanese conference calls now. He did this the other night, in my attic shred spot. He was up there someone before I got home from work. I didn't see him all day, then after my cold outdoor night session (I obviously was kicked of of my normal attic spot), I went up to take a shower. I got out and saw a light coming from the attic. He was STILL up there on his conference call... It had literally been around 7 hours that he was up there. I went up to check on him. I get up to the top of the stairs and see that Japanese news channel on muted and hear Japanese people talking super fast to one another on my dad's laptop. I kind of snuck up on him, and he was basically sleeping, so I shook him on the shoulder and woke him up. His first sleepy words were *looks around the room* "How... How did I get to Japan?" Maybe this isn't funny to you, but I cracked the fuck up when I heard him babble those words. Totally made my night.

But yeah, cool footbag news... Mike Toolan is DOWN to play footbag again! And he goes to school close to where our gym is, so he's going to be joining us from now on :) So happy about that. I haven't talked to him in a few months. He's been really busy with school. But he messaged me with this news tonight, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Gotta edit that Boston video this weekend. Don't forget.

Yeah yeah, spinning out of flapper from osis... if it were anyone else, I would be impressed. Cool beans.
Also, Mike who?! Ahhh yaahhh! He told me he'd have some free time for kick at home over chrimbus vacation. April and I will be in the area as well as Aiden so it sounds like at least one annual BFA chrimbus sesh is still alive! Run-on sentences.

At one point were you asking who had hit double spinning osis x2 on video? I can't remember if that was you or bear, but I think it was you. Anyway, I watched an old vid from Finland today, and saw that Lauri Airinen got that combo on video about 3 years ago. It's at the 4:30 mark:

Ben: Thanks man. Yeah, def get a session going sometime soon. I gotta show you how to do Flying stalls next time we kick. You would love them so much.

Ken: Awesome, yeah I saw the video today. Tuukka is definitely one of my favorite styles in the game. Super nifty trick selection. Thanks.

Ok then.. Had a pretty stoopid wicked session/drill session tonight.

Highlights:

 Drilled this a bit until I understood how it worked: Torque> Revup> Smear> DLO both sides
 Far Symp Swirl x4! Beat previous record by 1! Woop woop! This is starting to substitute for my Pdx Whirl, because those are still far behind. Far Swirl is much easier to clean for me.
 Dense string with Toe Far Reverse Swirl in the beginning and a midstring Ducking Butter> Twirl> Blender> Blender> string with good variety.
 Swifter> Reverse Swirl bs! I've always been so bad at Swifter. The Far Symp Swirls have seriously been paying off and I love being able to feel that when I put time into a certain concept.
 Footed a ridiculous trick that I want to get on tape for the xmas calendar ;) Will try to hit it tomorrow.
 Vortex> Far Symp Swirl BSOS> string> seal with Mobius> Spinning Butter> Marius> zooming drop****
 MUCH LESS OSIS> ZOOM THAN USUAL!
 Tapping Blink both sides (new on both)
 Reverse Eclipse both sides! new on both! Also been a dream trick for ages.
 Hit Far Bent bs in Ianek's honor. I don't like that trick much though :P Still first time on each side.
 Ended on Eclipse> Far Legover BSOS!

Yeah, really freaking pleased with today's session. Holy crap, so happy. Reading Ken's interview with Red recently has helped me a good bunch to think about my game. I caught myself saying "I'll do this to this, people would think that looks cool..." Then I caught myself and said "Wait... I don't care what people think looks cool. I want to do what I think looks cool. I want to have my own favorite style." I kind of think that's how you should play footbag. Maybe there are players that inspire your style, but ultimately, I think every player's style is a little like a snowflake. No one is exactly as good at every trick that someone else is. Therefore, it's up to you to create your own favorite style to show yourself and others. I think that is the key to loving footbag and having the most fun with it. If you shred to please others, you might not have nearly as much fun as if you shred to please yourself. Ken and Ianek both helped me further realize this.

I love flying stalls.

I got a package in the mail yesterday and it has something to do with my video for the xmas calendar. I'm excited. Surprises!

Also, tomorrow I'm having a session with Bonslaver, Ryan Morris, and Ivan! Stoked for that! Will film, for sure!

****So I noted that "Vortex> Far Symp Swirl BSOS with Mobius> Spinning Butter> Marius in the seal" run with the 4 asterisks because I had something to add. I "speech to text"ed Hogan that and it came out as Vortex Simp squirrels eat sauce with Mobius> Spinning Butter> Marius in the seal". Thought that was hilarious and easily my favorite footbag typo ever.

Over and out.

Re: Nick Polini: Operation: DCT (Do Cool Tricks)

Post by F[uns]tylin' Eclectic »

I'll just start by saying I have a new favorite weird trick. Well... maybe not, because Flapper will always be near and dear to me. But Reverse Eclipse is THEEE shit. T-H-E SHIT. I haven't found a cooler/more fun trick in a long time.

So any who, I had a bit of a break for a few days from footbag, because I had so much editing to do. SO MUCH editing to do... I felt like Ivan. I filmed 4 videos of Nathan and me. I think those are all backups, in case people bail on their slot in the Joulukalenteri. Nathan and I have a really special video that we are going to be filming very soon. We had to order some props (more expensive than "nice run" footbag props) for the video. Mine arrived the other day. Nathan's should be here soon and then we can start the video. SECRETSSSSS

So, I had a drill session last night. It was one of the best drill sessions I've ever had. I'll explain some background behind it first.

So it all started one morning with Ianek talking to me at Boston Jam. I saw him flipping through some papers and one with a bunch of trick names caught my eye. I pointed and asked him what it was. He said "That's my trick repertoire." I asked him to see it. He humorously/shyly said "No." I jokingly hassled him for it and he gave in and said he'd show me later.

He showed me at the jam site and explained everything to me. He had basically taken a bunch of tricks that didn't agree with his body and "hacked" them off the list. He only used the stuff he was fairly consistent - very consistent with. He broke it down into 3 sections. Bails, Wows, and Specials.

Bails: All your "normal" tricks. Drifter, Whirl, Torque, etc.. stuff that is in basically everyone's game. All of these are very consistent, for the most part.

Wows: These are the tricks that separate your game from other's games and cause some level of a "Wow-factor". Stuff like Pdx Torque, Reverse Eclipse, Eclipse, Flapper, Toe ss Revup, Symp Blink, Tombstone, Gyro Blink. Stuff that is pretty consistent. I look at these as "surprises".

Specials: This is the "fairly consistent" category. It's also where you find the more complicated tricks that, again, not every else can do. Stuff than might take a bit more energy/effort. For instance, stuff like Marius, Food Processor, Gyro Symp Blink, Double Spins, etc...

Some of this stuff can change over time. If something in Specials gets easier, then maybe I'd move it to Wows.

You want to have the majority of your runs be filled with Bails, and then put some Wows in there to keep it interesting. The Specials are used as a 1st or 2nd trick in a tricks, connected to a Wow. Or.. If you're feeling ballsy after a hefty amount of contacts, then you can throw down a Special. Kind of similar to how "Special" tricks worked in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater video game.

So, after Ianek helped me make the list, I started having the best runs of my life. One other thing that helped me have those runs was this quote from Ianek: "You're only as good as your 30+ contact run". Ever since these 2 things, my runs are rarely under 30 contacts, unless I try to "break my level".

I do hope some people will try to make a trick repertoire now. It is the single thing that has helped my game more than anything else.

Highlights from last drill session:

 Got through around 3/4 of my repertoire. Took each trick and tried to use it in a drill and bsos it with a good link or something. Tried stringing after my drill session and my trick selection surprised me quite a lot. I was hitting some really nice links.
 Atom> Tap *rpt first try. I have only ever hit this once, but this time it was just too easy, which was such a cool feeling.
 Flip Pdx Drifter x4! Improving slowly but surely..
 Worked on Stepping out of Symp Swirl, which I honestly don't think I have done more than 4 times before. Did stuff like Symp Swirl> Ripwalk *rpt and stuff.
 Some other good drills that I forget, but drilling straight through this repertoire list has been so incredible for my game. Can't wait to drill through some more of it soon.
 Spinning Reverse Eclipse (invention? maybe.. probably not :P) (one side, working toward getting better at them on flip.. I can do them both sides, but strong side is much much better)
 Mobius> Blur> Phoenix bs, then on one side, I hit Mobius> Blur> Phoenix> Ripped Warrior. The Ripped Warrior was quite literally a knee-jerk reaction. HAAAA.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope everyone's ready for the Joulukalenteri!

Is Reverse Eclipse: Inside Stall > Quantum set up (reverse dex) or Dragonfly Stall (played backwards) ?

I feel like if I made that list, I'd be depressed by its shortness. :D

Nathan: Either one of us could be correct, but I think I walked into the session excited to show you guys Rev Eclipse already. Maybe you mentioned it. I don't remember. I don't even remember what I had for breakfast this morning. Did I even have breakfast this morning? Where I am?

Other Nathan: Nah, Rev Eclipse is like a flying Reverse Hopover. It'll probably be in the next video I film.

So I have decided to do my own version of Link of the Day for the 2014 Joulukalenteri.

Let me first say, being in control of this thing has brought upon so many emotions: nervousness, excitement, joy, fear... shear terror, worry, doughnuts, and more shear terror. But ever since today, I have been experiencing more of the positive ones. After watching Paul's news video, I realized my Joulukalenteri run would undoubtedly look like a piece of hamster shit compared to Jay's last year and even all the years before that. I wasn't planning on doing LOTD, because I got pretty down on myself about the fact that I can't hit like crazy dexes and massive massive tricks that Jay and Anssi were hitting last year.. let alone linking them?? Hell to the fuck no. It's a shitty habit, but I keep looking at myself as that annoying, excited 18 year old kid that just found Modified and was so stoked on footbag that he didn't know how to contain it all, so he posted all over the forum about every topic (if you've lost me here, that kid was me). Sometimes, I even feel like I may have been the reason Modified died for so long. It was right around the time that I joined Modified, that Modified was fading away. I know that's not the case, but man, things almost line up too well. Sorry, got side tracked. But yeah, I sucked at footbag for a long time. It's really hard to actually see myself as one of the better players now. Then I kind of assessed my game last night. I realized that I can do a lot of stuff that not many people can do. I figured I would suck it up and give it my all.

So, I got up this morning with a Hogan phone call as my alarm clock. He's going to be doing daily illustrations for the Joulukalenteri, by the way, so that will be a fun new touch. Excited for that. When I got off the phone with him, I got on some pants, a long sleeve, and an over shirt, grabbed my camera, a list of links I prepared the night before, and some water and headed out the door. I set up, hit all 24 links I had planned (some were modified because they were harder than I thought, but I replaced them with equally hard links), packed up, and headed home to continue to edit my life away.

Unfortunately, the difficulty from last year's LOTD may have gone down... you won't see any Nemesii, or many triple dexes... however.. My 2014 LOTD is more about technicality. What Jay's and Anssi's links had in difficulty, mine has basically the equivalent in techy links. Kinda cool that my footbag game has gone down that path, because when I skated as a kid, I always wanted to be a techy skater, with manuals over intricate obstacles, quick reverts in tight places, and like kickflips over sketchy gaps with bad terrain. However, I have a low pain tolerance, and I'm very delicate :D I actually used to pass out and have seizures every time I fell hard enough lol So skateboarding wasn't for me.

Side tracked again, my apologies. Point: LOTD 2014 will be as techy as LOTD 2013 was difficult.

I have Day 1 through 8 all edited and ready to go, too. I put my own twist on Jay's LOTD. I enjoy adding comedy bits to things, sooooo yeah.. I did that. Christmas is a cheerful time so hopeful my LOTDs will give some laughs and then give some "WHAT THE FUCK"s.

Going back to edit more now, but before I do, I wanted to share some drill highlights I just had.

Highlights:

 Gyro muted Legover> Legbeater *rpt> good run
 Never thought I'd do this, but Nathan Bonslaver kept asking me about how to do Flurry and I told him that he's already better at it than I am, so asking me won't really be too helpful. I don't like not being able to give tips on a trick, sooooo... I learned them tonight. Even got a real smooth Flurry BSOS! Now I can actually give Nathan some tips. But honestly, I think he'll be WAY better at them than I am within several months without even trying. No doubt. He's really good at stuff like that. He footed it a while ago, and I'm sure he already hit it but hasn't told me yet lol

Yeah, there you have it. Back to editing. Man, now I know how Ivan feels. I've edited and completed 8 actual videos for the Joulukalenteri in just the last week and a half. Well, Ivan, if you're ever lonely, just remember than someone... somewhere.. in Mont Clare, PA... is also editing a movie ;)

Everyone, get stoked for the Joulukalenteri & LOTD!!!

I'm glad the link of the day has lowered in difficulty. It got to about day 5 and I was already well out of my reach, so I lost a bit of interest in that.

I double what Daniel said, I managed day 1 link and then just watched. It was good to spectate, but sad, I really thought they were going to start slowly.

If you're unhappy with the difficulty, you can always make the links for both sides. That would make it much much harder. Most people are both sided on their elementary tricks, but not on their Sick 3's and Big One's.

F[uns]tylin' Eclectic wrote:Matt, that picture works so well with no explanation :P It's hilarious just as is with no explanation though. I'll give the explanation. If you attach a marker onto the bottom of your foot, pointed at the ground, that is the shape the marker would draw on the ground. So this picture would be looking at the top of your head. Also, the image on the left is the correct way, and the image on the right is the incorrect way (how I used to do them). If you have trouble with Drifters, think about this picture and it will really help you.
Really glad I came back to re-read this. Super helpful. And hillarious
