Re: Feminine Freestyle --- London Birthday Jam! {LICKASS 201

Post by Cass »

Late Saturday morning I met up with Camille in Toronto en route to London Ontario for Zach Forth’s birthday jam. Luckily the roads were clear aside from a bit of rain near the end of the trip. I was glad for some company on the drive and we had some really good conversations. It’s too bad Erik couldn’t make it as well.

We arrived at the venue by about 2pm. Zach rented out a gym space in an elementary school. It was super dope for a five person shred!

We walked in to find Zach and Alex playing the new Smash Bro’s game on a TV that they brought. So random! The gym was booked 12-6 so they brought it just in case they were bored waiting for us to show up.

Image

We had access to the equipment room with all the toys and balls and stuff which was super dope!

We got to shred pretty much right away. I think I played alright at the beginning. After about an hour Johnny arrived! I have seen him a couple times recently but this would be our first actual shred together in a while. I didn’t mind the five person shred too much because I wasn’t feeling super energetic. Often people would leave the circle to take a break and we would have a good 3-4 person shred.

Image

The Ontario scene is definitely a unique one. It’s often difficult to stay focused, especially with Zach and Alex around - they are so fucking hilarious. Johnny definitely makes it worse because he instigates the hilarity. Some seriously funny conversations about body hair and other things went down. I laughed SO FUCKING MUCH on Saturday omg.

At some point Alex wanted to change up the playlist and put some really obnoxious super fast rap stuff on. It was absolutely terrible for shred. He thought we didn’t like it because the lyrics were offensive but the beat was honestly just impossible to shred to. Johnny made some comment about it and Alex changed the song to one that sounded EXACTLY THE SAME. I nearly died. I literally rofled. I think it was something you had to be there for. So fucking hilarious. These guys kill me.

Image

Johnny hit Fairy muted Dyno>Swifter which was a super rad stylish combo. It inspired me to hit Fairy muted Dyno>Ripwalk which felt super neat.

I was happy to find out that Zach and Alex have been playing together a lot lately. Alex has noticeably improved and has some new tricks up his sleeve which was cool to see. Camille has great flow to her game. Zach has awesome style and nice consistency. He is always a pleasure to shred with. Johnny complained that he is out of practice. But he is still the Canadian hero. I told him that this is the worst excuse not to go to NYJ because he still kicks ass.

Image

Both Alex and Zach were shredding in modded Sketchers. They are really light and seem decent for footbag. I’m not sure what model they are though. It was cool to see a different shoe being used.

We had a really fun shred with good vibes and lots of laughs until about 5pm. At that point we got out the scoops and balls from the equipment room and had some epic battles. It was really fun to double fist the scoops and just whip balls all over the place. We are such children. It was great. This is the most running around I’ve done in some time.

After that Alex, Zach, Camille, and Johnny played some dodgeball. I was pretty tired and decided to sit out for the sake of my shoulder. I spent some time stretching and enjoyed watching the dodgebattle.

Image

Once we packed all our stuff up, Zach headed home to get ready for the party that evening and the rest of us headed over to Alex’s place to shower and chill for a bit. His roommates seem more chill than his old ones which is cool. We played bananagrams with scrabble tiles.

We were to head over to Zach’s place by 8pm. By this point we were ravenous. We were totally the fat kids at the party. There were other people there but I just had no interest in meeting people with this level of hunger. We devoured food with no shame. There was pizza, nachos, spinach dip, veggies, fruit, candy and other good stuff.

It’s difficult to be interested in socializing with non-footbag people after a full day of shred.

Johnny, Alex, Camille and I embarked on an interesting spiritual adventure of sorts. I knew I would have an awesome time because these humans are amazing. Unfortunately the vibes of the party didn’t quite match and the rap music that was playing was sort of terrible imo. We spent a good amount of the time upstairs in the bedroom laughing our asses off about nothing. First we were the fat kids, now the antisocial weirdos laughing at the ceiling. Awesome.

After a while most people had left the party and we were chilling in the living room with Zach, his wife Helen and a couple other people maybe. Zach did some comedy for us and just had us roaring with laughter. He was fucking hilarious. He did a sort of mime act with this chicken hat that he shoved a shirt in. The things he did to that chicken.. must not be repeated. I honestly can’t find words to do it justice but it was fucking hilarious.

Zach owns all sorts of weird massage contraptions. Zach massaging Alex on the floor with one of them and him making orgasm sounds.

The weird glowy electronic massager.

Image

“What is art?” was sort of the theme of the weekend. I can’t even remember how this started. Zach laying the chicken egg. “Now that is art!”

We got to sleep pretty late. I woke up around 9:30 the next morning but ended up falling back asleep until past noon. I didn’t even feel bad about that because I definitely needed the sleep. Hanging out Sunday afternoon was really enjoyable. Zach made us a nice breakfast including bacon, eggs, hash browns, and pancakes. We played some smash bro’s and also watched the videos of Zach that Camille took the night before. Yep, still funny. I wish I had a copy of that :P

I’m so grateful that I got a chance to spend some quality time with these awesome people! I enjoyed this mini event a great deal and it’s really tricky to do it justice with a blog post.

Zach and Helen were great hosts! Hopefully another London event can happen in the spring because that venue would be perfect for a larger jam.

After a brief stop at Alex’s place and some good hugs Camille and I headed back eastward.

What a fun weekend!

Both Monday and Tuesday of this weekend I had solo sessions for about 30 minutes before doing yoga. It felt really good to play alone without any pain. I’m still trying to take it easy but I think I will be able to get back to proper training pretty soon. I have a full hour massage tomorrow which I’m definitely looking forward to. I'm also looking forward to a chill weekend involving lots of rest this week.

Yesterday and today I had solid 30-40 minute shred sessions followed by an hour of yoga and sauna. That makes 4 this week! I’m on a roll!

I think keeping my sessions short like this and following it up with loads of stretching is the best way to keep improving and stay healthy. I have mostly been working on solidifying basics and key concepts including Rakes, rev. Swirls, Spinning, Ducking. Very few sets and nothing high impact. Also working a lot on making Dragons work like clippers. This is a real challenge but progress is being made.

It’s 7pm and I’ve already brushed my teeth. I am so looking forward to just passing out and sleeping for a solid 12-14 hours. I get to spend this weekend relaxing, taking care of myself, and getting chores done. Yay!

So I meant to rest this weekend but then a super fun opportunity arose that I just couldn’t pass up! I ended up having a crazy fun sleepless night saturday night and then spending the last few days trying to recover from it. I am physically okay it has mainly just been a struggle to catch up on sleep and balance myself out emotionally. Gotta take the downs with the ups. Totally worth it though! I’ve made some really amazing new friends lately and I’m super grateful for that.

Yesterday was my last yoga class of the semester and I had my first shred since Friday before that. I’m stoked that the level 3 badge is up because it gives me a new challenge to work towards. It’s definitely going to take some time to get through the whole thing but I did get it started. I like that you get some options of what to concepts to do. Cause yeah, if quantum was a required concept it just totally would not happen for me any time soon.

I’m filming for something called the Journal of Visualized Experiments next week where they come into the lab and film my chemistry methodology. It’s going to be a hectic week getting ready for that. I’m definitely looking forward to getting that over with.

I’m hoping to keep having short sessions 4-5 days per week until Christmas. It would be nice to see some more improvement by NYJ.

I played footbag today. It was a short session, made shorter due to interruption by someone “interested” in footbag.

School is stressing me out and despite being distracted it felt good to play. My run length was really good overall.

At one point I did a 25+ contact run with a bunch of different rakes bs. It felt cool. When I looked up three super swole gym bro’s were standing there with their mouths hanging open. It was actually pretty funny. I think one of them said “bravo”.

I have sooo much to do between now and tuesday. I feel like I’m starting to get sick. All I want to do is sleep. This weekend I’m definitely going to be paying for the fun I had last weekend. And I have to proctor an exam saturday afternoon. Fun wow.

I’m getting pretty damn stoked for NYJ. It’s coming up soon! I’m toying with the idea of driving to MI a couple days before New Years. I know some awesome people that are showing up early and I want to get as much time in with them as possible! A trip back to Canada to acquire more shredders before the actual event may be in order. I reaallllly hope the weather holds up. That ice storm last year was enough terrible weather for the next few years I think.

This blog post was pretty lame. Meh.

Yeah I get a lot of positive reactions from gym bro's so I don't mind playing there too much.

I’ve been getting over the worst illness I’ve experienced in some time. Thursday through Saturday was just a complete write off. It’s really hard on me psychologically when I’m not able to accomplish things. It came at a tough time too because I have an important project this coming week that I haven’t been able to spend as much time as I would like in preparation for. I saw a doctor Friday morning and it turned out to be just a [brutal] chest cold.

Anyways I spent a great deal of time sleeping and being useless and miserable and finally woke up today feeling somewhat human again. I got more things done before 10am than I had in the two days prior. It feels good to not be useless.

I went to the gym today mainly for yoga and sauna but I started it out with some shred. I ended up playing longer than expected. It felt so good to be able to do things like hit footbag tricks again. I worked on Level 3 some more. I have 8 different concepts both sides so far. There are still some that I know I can do no problem and others that are going to take a little more work.

I’m really glad I made it to the gym today. I felt better than I have in about a week when I was finished. I probably won't be able to make it back until Thursday now.

I’ve been practicing my Osis in reverse namaste lately. It’s great for posture. My current record for that is 43.

Compared to last week this week is off to an incredible start!

The project I’m filming turned out to be pretty straightforward and I guess I was more worried than I needed be. Finishing that up today which I will be glad for.

I ended up going to the gym last night and shredding for a full hour! Longest solo shred in some time. Knocked a few more things off the Level 3 list. The more I work on that thing the more I realise what a huge fucking task it’s going to be. My goal is to finish by the end of February. I think that’s reasonable.

I had never actually hit symp rev swirl before but that’s one of the requirements so I got that both sides for the first time yesterday. It’ll be a good thing to practice.

I really like working on the badge because it’s all the concepts I need to improve on anyways and it has drill/run ideas that I never would have thought to do.

My blog has been so boring lately. I can’t wait for my next footbag adventure! I’ve decided to go to Michigan for a full week so I can maximize time with cool people and party in Detroit for NYE. WOOOOO!!!

Practice that Symp Rev Swirl for a few weeks and you'll be able to hit Symp Blinks. That's the only reason I ever wanted to drill them. Stoked for NYJ!

Yeah symp blinks would be neat!

Yay I finally have something to blog about!

I played footbag Thursday but I guess there wasn’t anything super worth writing about.

I decided to go play footbag with Erik and Johnny at Bahen Sunday. It had been a little while since I made it to a FAT shred.

I ended up going out with some friends Saturday night. I spent way too much on parking to go to the GLOW event at Guv Saturday night. Ended up getting there too late and waiting an hour and a half to get in. It was a shit show in there. SO MANY PEOPLE. Guv is a massive venue and it was definitely worth seeing but I literally got stuck and walls of people on several occasions. I’m pretty good at navigating crowds but this was just out of hand. Luckily I somehow managed to find my friends in there after about a half an hour.

After that we went to an after hours club with just the grimiest house beats. So much dancing and fun. By the time we got out of there it was nearly 9am. I drove my friends all the way back to Oshawa, hung out for like 30 minutes, and drove back to Toronto for the FAT sesh!

I felt bad for being a little strung out for the shred but I was actually in reasonable condition all things considered. It was so great to see Johnny and Erik! Totally worth the drive back even if I couldn’t play that well.

There was a lot of traffic at the shred spot which was kind of distracting for me. Some event or something. One lady came by with her daughter and was legit interested in the sport. Sounds like she might get into it a bit which is cool!

I felt okay from the shred except for the lack of energy from dancing and staying up all night. I kept trying to hit guiltless runs but it was so exhausting! I think I had the most fun yesterday with some silly runs with Dragons and things. No real highlights but I did enjoy playing for as long as I was able to. Near the end I started to feel like I was going to pass out so I called it quits.

Watching Erik and Johnny shred was so freaking enjoyable! They both played quite well. Johnny hit some links that were just absolutely grimey. Erik was filming so hopefully we will see something from that session sooner or later.

I didn’t really want to pay for food but the boys knew that they could convince me with sushi. I just can’t say no to sushi..

We all got bento boxes and there was SO MUCH FOOD. Om nom nom. I love sush! It was nice to spend a little more time with Erik and Johnny before heading home to pass out for 14 hours. I went to bed at 5pm last night, up just after 7. I think I recovered pretty nicely from a super dope weekend!

I will be in Michigan in less than two weeks!! Better take care of myself and get some good training in before then :D

Footbag and yoga was good to me today!

I forgot my yoga mat at home. Luckily the athletics coordinator is a nice lady that talks to me all the time when I’m shredding. She broke the rules and let me have one of the nice yoga mats from the fitness rooms to use.

I didn’t practice anything too intense today. Just did whatever felt good. Lots of tiltless, BOPs, spinning. Flapper>Dragon>Swirl bs felt really neat.

Spent well over an hour in my supervisors office discussing chemistry things after I went to the gym. That was just so mentally draining but also felt productive.

I have so much shit to get done before xmas. Crud.

I could easily just spend so much of my day at the gym. I kinda do already :P It’s gonna be nice and dead for a while due to the holidays and I must take full advantage before the resolution people invade!

I’m so freaking pumped for Michigan.

Thanks so much Ken! It’s really nice to go back once in a while and relive memories from great events. Detailed writeups are definitely worth the effort and it’s nice that other people enjoy them too :)

I had another decent solo session today. Worked on spinning a bunch.

I started this blog post hours ago. I guess I’m not so inspired to write at the moment.

I haven’t really been pushing myself lately. Injuries and illness have been holding me back. I’ve also kinda been more interested in yoga than footbag. I don’t think it’s a bad thing. I do however think that a couple heavy training sessions before MI would do me good. Perhaps I’ll make this Saturday a gym day and practice a whole bunch.

My shoulder is finally starting to heal. Or at least it doesn’t hurt all the time any more. I still have to be really careful not to tweak it when I shred.

Life is pretty damn good.

I have played footbag both yesterday and today making 4 training sessions in 5 days this week!

Today when I went the the athletic centre I noticed the lights were on in one of the yoga/fitness rooms. I checked the door and it was unlocked! This never happens. I seized the opportunity to shred in there. The privacy and nice surface were really refreshing. It allowed me to have an actual drill session because I didn’t have to show off for anyone :D

I finally completed the spinning run requirement of level 3. That one took a couple good sessions of practice. Things are improving in that department.

My boss took my lab mates and I out for sushi after I went to the gym today. Sushi after a good shred is just the best.

My blog has been lacking content lately so here are a few runs from today.

Thanks Kyle!

I had another fun/busy weekend!

Saturday was the FAT session with Erik, Alex, Adam, and JJ! A good portion of my runs ended in me laughing at some silliness that was said. This is a general theme for FAT sessions. Overall though I think I played quite well. The session had good vibes and was a lot of fun.

Ducking Clipper x18

Saturday night I went to a really great solstice party! There were lots of neat things to experience there. A live painter created a beautiful work of psychedelic art by the end of the night. There was a 3D screen of triangular prisms that had really awesome graphics projected over it. People dressed up all fancy rocking out on stilts. Good music and so much more. It’s amazing being in such a positive space where people are totally comfortable being their own freaky awesome selves. Some of the hooping skills on display were absolutely incredible. I need to practice more. Super inspiring.

I made it home at about 7am Sunday and slept pretty much straight through until 6 Monday morning. It's really tough to balance both footbag and partying on the weekend. I just want to do it all! It's definitely better to do the footbag thing first but I didn't have nearly as much energy for dancing as I would have liked.

I had a short footbag session this morning which was good even though I was low on energy.

Current Osis record: 66

I have one more school day before I get a week and a half off! It’s going to be sooo nice to just relax and spend time with my footbag loves.

Yes, yes, of course Ben!

Today was my last day at school for 12 days! Woo!

I had a really productive footbag session this morning!!

I drilled lots of different tricks that I like and I feel that I made some good progress with different things. Full event training mode!!

There were lots of highlights but I can only remember a few.

Flip pdx. Whirl>handcatch x10 without dropping
Pixie Guay>Neo Mirage rpt.
Osis>Gyro Osis rpt. 6 contacts

Spinning is starting to feel really good!

I found out today that I was accepted to present a talk about my work at the American Chemical Society meeting in Denver this March! Super excited and nervous! Hopefully I can meet up with Ken. It would be killer to have a proper shred with him.

Disclaimer: ranty, non-footbag post.

Lol my step sister got engaged yesterday and here I am spending all my disposable income travelling to hacky sack events.

Better than spending it on an ostentatious piece of jewellery that depreciates by half the minute you walk out of the store with it. Did that come off bitter? Diamonds are just such a scam lol.

I got an LED hoop! I haven’t actually been able to turn it on yet since the battery is at Anton’s house. Couldn’t ship to Canada for some reason. I’m really happy with it though. It’s poly pro and a tiny bit smaller than my other hoops which is perfect. It’ll still be nice even if the electronics break.

Yesterday and today have been weird unstructured days for me. I miss playing footbag but I figure I need a bit of rest before I spend 8 days with footbag people. I should probably be doing more yoga than I have been. My cluttered bedroom isn’t an ideal space though.

Christmas is a weird time for me at this point in my life. I’m bothered by its religious nature, weird traditions, gluttony, and consumerism. I’m not really close with any of my family except my dad and grandma. It’s nice to show appreciation for people that you love but do I really need this weird ass holiday to do that?

And what’s with lying to Children about Santa? This is kinda whack.

The Joulukalenteri is one of the best things about xmas yeah! A cool video to look forward to every day is great. And nothing to feel bad about (You know, like eating a whole bunch of garbage, the slave labour used to produce these material things I don't need, or the fact that I have no interest in spending time with family members that I have absolutely nothing in common with). I'll have to make a calendar video next year. It will be good to focus my energy towards a more positive facet of the season.

This comic is great. I seem to fall under the ‘30-something with no kids’ category.

Saturday is totally going to feel how Christmas used to as a kid. Yayyyyyyyy.

NYJ was hella epic! Check out the next page for my writeup :D

Adjusting back to the grind of real life is always a challenge after such an amazing event. Especially a huge one like this. There was just so much love!

Physically I don't think I've ever felt this healthy after a footbag event. Anton took great care of us, especially when it came to meal time. Nick Landes is the person that I think I needed there the most. I'm so grateful that he was able to make it even though his flight was cancelled. Yoga and massages with him are the best ever<3
