My favorite top post ever.

I've been being smart about when I play recently. Trying to not crush it every single day like I used to. Work has really been draining me, energy-wise. However, in good news, I GOT AN INTERVIEW AS A FISH BIOLOGIST! I really hope I destroy that interview, because I think that job sounds super cool, plus it would get me out of a dry, dusty warehouse and into wet, yummy water! Please cross your fingers for me... Unless you don't like me.. then I guess you have every right to make a little Nick Polini voodoo doll and have your way with it. ...That's not the best way I could have worded that... but it's certainly not the worst! :D :D :D

Playing footbag stuff:

I actually hadn't kicked all last week, aside from Wednesday when I played outside for 10 minutes and filmed the LOTWs for the next 2 weeks.

First off.. I stitched a new bag for myself today and I love it. It's inspired by one that Hania made for Jian-Julius.

Image

Plays well already, too. Also, it looks really great while in the air. The yellow really flashes.

Session tonight...

Made progress with old stuff and also hit some new stuff..

Highlights:

 Drifter progress... B2b felt a lot easier all of the sudden.
 Pixie progress!!! Finally! I asked Derek for some advice and he told me told me to do PLO xForever. That actually worked lol I marathonned PLOs for a while and out of nowhere, they just felt so much nicer.
 Ripped Warrior> Blurry Drifter(> Mobius on one side) bs
 Did some Catacombs (Pixie ss Drifter) bs tonight, because Kyle told me he really liked them. I've always liked them but stayed away form them because they hurt me... they don't hurt me anymore :) I even stepped out of it on bs.
 Swirling ss Butterfly bs then BSOS! New on both sides! This movement has always given me hell. I've been trying to end most sessions recently with Swirling ss Legover bs a few times each, and that really helped I think.

Fun session. Always warm down with chainmail bag.

I got Nadiah violin lessons for xmas. She's already been to a few lessons now but I haven't seen her since they started. I slept over her place last night and this morning, she woke me up by playing the violin... surprisingly well for a beginner. It was such a nice way to wake up. Violin sounds so great. I'm really happy she's been enjoying the lessons and getting a lot out of them.

Steadily working on my comedy. Got a hilarious idea for a bit today and I'm excited to expand on that.

I watched the Kittenbowl today... twice. That was incredible. Nice to know they all got adopted.

Life's dope. Would be doper if I landed that Fish Biologist job. Fingers crossed.

I think that's everything.

I'll leave it off with a song I've been feeling lately:

Happy sleeping.

Whoa, hot pants... I just spent a while looking back on my early blog junk... I was practicing SO wrong. And I was really really fucking weird. Well, maybe that last part hasn't changed so much, but damn dude, I was drilling EVERYTHING all at the same time. Then I had sessions where I would just hit like 20 new tricks on one side UGHHHHH... So much lost time. If you're currently drilling tricks for consistency/not advaced Guiltless yet, please just pick like 3 concepts and get really good at them, THEN move on. Don't do what I did.

I did find out what I hit Mobius> Mobius on May 4th. May the Fourth be with you. I think the Fourth was with me that day. Also found out I hit my first 6 ADD to appease my gods, Kevin Hogan and Mark Monistere.. Now I'm good friends with them both. Funny how stuff does things.

I drilled tonight. It was a jolly time.

Highlights:

 Void> Blur bs
 Blurry Drifter> Reverse Swirl> Blur bs
 Drilled Stepping out of Far Symp Swirl bs
 WilliamShatnerwalk b2b (Cloud Kick Stepping op Butter).. Long time comin'
 Drilled Cloud Kick> ss Butter> Cloud Kick> op Butter *rpt
 Swifter> hand> flip Swifter> hand. You gotta keep those Swifters right in the center of you and they'll feel nice.
 Was stringing a bit and had a really cool midstring improv combo: Gyro Blink> Paradon> Blender> Blur

Pretty sure my thumb is fractured or broken from that mishap at NYJ in Adam's basement. Still hasn't healed and still hurts to move it.

That's all for now. I'm going to listen to an old man guide me through fictional sleepy time adventures NAMSAYIN?

Had a session with my new CopperFit knee braces (Thanks for the recommendation, Aaron Price!). They are pretty remarkable.

Anyway, I gotta grab a shower, but I had an awesome drill/shred session.

Highlights:

 Pdx Whirl> Blur BSOS (Always been tough; Way easier today)
 Barfly> Pdx Whirl> Blur bs (Old Nick Polini didn't do links like this)
 Pdx Whirl> Blender> Spinning Osis bs (Saw that this was Brian McKenzie's signature combo, and wanted to try)
 Magellan> PLO> Smear> Paradon> Blur bs (Old Nick Polini didn't do stuff like this either).
 Barfly> Blur bs
 BAP Drill x9 contacts
 Blurriest> Blur bs STRONGSIDE FLIPSIDE
 Here is the WilliamShatnerwalk b2b from the other night. I called the Cloud Stepping set "Williamshatnerring" ("Shatnerring" for short), because Matt Cross originally named it "Whipping", but now Rev Whirl has officially been changed to Whipping, by Ianek, so this set needed a new name. The end.
 As I was about to end my session, Bonslaver texted me and challenged me to hit Spinning Osis> Torque *rpt, which I had actually never hit before. I got it first try tonight to a decent run. Felt great.

Uh, that's all for now. Good night.

Vojta: Welcome to the future, where videos make you watch them a million times, whether you like it or not :P

So big news that I haven't told anyone yet... Ianek just left NOLA after hanging with Mark Monistere for a while... now he's on his way home... but before he reaches home, he's making one last stop in my town! Crashing at my place tomorrow and Saturday, leaving Sunday morning. Super stoked. Had a session to prepare a little.

Highlights:

 Fog> Atomsmasher bs and almost BSOS (Turned out to be Fog> Atom> stuff> other Fog> Atomic missed Mirage! So close...)!!!! Never hit anything Atomic out of Fog before tonight. The best part was that it felt easy on both sides! Well, the Fog is still kind of inconsistent on flipside, but I'm going to be working Pdx DLO soon. I also think I've figured out an important part about Atomics. You set the bag and the foot that the bag was on must IMMEDIATELY go down to the ground to support you while your other leg dexes. I was nailing very clean Atomsmashers this way. Can't wait to try more this weekend.
 BAP Drill x9 again! I'm only 3 contacts away from my 2015 goal!
 A sick drill was footed, but I'm just going to try to hit that this weekend.
 Swirling Far Legover> Phoenix
 Pdx Whirl> Barfly> Blur BSOS
 Blurry Drifter> Fog one side :/ I've hit it both sides before, but now strong side on this link is really damn strong. Need to figure out whats up with my flipside with these concepts.

Anyway, good session. Oh yeah, it wasn't solo. Jackson Raap joined me. He pretty much quit a while ago, but he told me he wants to get back into it and he wants to practice correctly this time around. I told him I'm happy to teach him.

Also, kinda neat.. one of my high school friends, who I havent talked to in a long time, just sent me a video of him hitting an ATW with some toe stalls. He said he got hand surgery recently and he cant do anything with his hands, so he started dabbling with footbag, and it's been really fun for him so far. So, he said he was going to stop by our session on Saturday. Hoping he does. He was a good friend of mine, I definitely miss him. We used to go skateboarding almost every weekend in high school, but then we went our separate ways when I went to college. Anyway, hoping we can get him to hit some new tricks and get him sticking with it.

Peace.

I AM SO BUMMED OUT THAT IANEK IS GONE. He just left a little bit ago. This has been an amazing weekend. I have certainly made a new close friend in footbag. The coolest, nicest guy ever. Totally down to earth, same interests as me, grabs life by the horns, just really LIVES life ever day.

Ianek arrived on Friday evening, just after I got home from work. I was a little nervous for his visit, because my knee had been hurting quite a bit on Thursday through Friday. I was just praying to Allah that I would be in good shape for shred on Saturday. I iced my knee and put Biofreeze on it and kept it in a knee brace those 2 days. When I got home and Ianek showed up at my door, we all sat down (parents, Ianek, and me) and talked about his journey. My parents love Ianek too. Ianek told us of his travels and a little about his life, then soon after, footbag talk started. So we chatted about that for a while. Some interesting topics came up, like how to spread the sport wider, and patches that could be done to the ADD system to make everything more fair. There is no way that Grifter is the same difficulty as a to ss Butterfly...

After a little while of footbag talk, we sat down and just relaxed, ate dinner, and watched a movie with my dad.. well, we kind of had the movie on for background, because we sort of all just conversed over the movie about a bunch of topics. Ianek is just too interesting to quietly sit and watch a movie with. After that, we went to bed.

Woke up the next day, had some breakfast, then went for a hike in Valley Forge. I gave Ianek a tour of the park, which is like historical and shit. We talked all about his different travels and our loves of nature and wildlife. I've decided that I must take a trip to the west coast at some point, as well as Costa Rica. Too many unbelievable amphibians, reptiles, and birds. my 3 other passions outside of footbag.

Here is a picture of us at the main look out point at Valley Forge:

Image

On our way back to the car, we spotted an interesting small falcon. Anyone else would be totally bored learning about birds, but Ianek has an interest for all wildlife, which is awesome. So we stalked this falcon to try to identify it better. We both had binoculars, but this was something I had never seen before, and I'm still trying to do some research to find out what it was.. I currently have no idea, other than that it was a small accipiter. Anyway, enough nerd talk.

When we got back to my place, we were just in time for the session. My neighbor owns a tang zoo do dojang, and he let us use it for the whole day after 2:30, which was super nice of him and also totally awesome, because we used the crap out of it.

We head down there and start our session. It was filmed and I am editing it now. I think I may do the rough edits, then and it to Bonslaver so he can have some fun with some fancy after effects and stuff. He's been wanting to try out some new stuff he looked into. Should be a great video with a little bit of everything. Hardcore shred, lots of variety, lots of fun/silly stuff, surprising things. Excited to star editing. Anyway, the session was amazing. We were both very pleased. We realized our games are so similar, but so different at the same time. After we finished kicking, Ianek looked at all the concepts in my game and helped me clearly understand some stuff I had been having problems with, like Atomic, Pixie, and some other things.

One thing I hit off camera to end the session, was Toe ss Swirling Mirage. Never hit it before. But when I landed it, I rolled my ankle a bit :P So I won't be playing for a little while, due to knee and ankle injury. But honestly, I'm glad, because this was a blessing in disguise. I needed a break anyway.

After our 3.5ish hour session, we headed back to my place and Ianek explained his ADD-patching ideas to me for hours. It wasn't boring. His new idea is totally logical and makes more sense than our current ADD system. After that, we watched old footbag videos and then went to bed.

Ianek just left a little while ago. Really sad to see him go, but man, we had such a great time. Talking, hiking, footbagging. Every moment with him this weekend has been so gnarly. I can't say one negative thing about the dude.

Anyway, I'm going to be taking about 2 weeks off from footbag now. I got some great runs and combos in the upcoming video, but I really need a rest. So it will be nice to have a good video come out as a check point for my last session before my break.

Good news, though. Ianek said he will be back. We invited him back to our house and/or our vacation RV in Maryland. Really looking forward to seeing him again. I love new footbag friendships.

Good day to you all.

Hey,

I just watched the vid of you and Ianek and thought "I wish Nick would stop bailing to gyro/spinning clipper, and start bailing to gyro/spinning butterfly". It usually happens as zooming, and I assume it's either to regain balance, or to give yourself time to think of another link. Either way, it would be sweet to see more gyro/spinning butters from you instead of the clippers.

Thanks a lot, TJ. I think that's what I needed. I know my game could be more dense, and honestly I don't know why I don't bail to Spin/Gyro Butter more often. Lazy leg? lol No idea. But you'll see that change in my next video. Promise.

Footbag:

So this has been almost one week without footbag. My knee feels a lot better, but I still would like to take one more week off. Normally this time off would kill me, but I know it's what I have to do if I want to keep playing. When I come back, I'm not going to do anything until I work all the way through to the Level 3 badge. I always tell newer players that I suggest they do the badges, but I'm a fucking hypocrite because I haven't attempted them yet, myself. I think that's one thing that I needed. More basics. After I achieve Level 3, I have a new method to get good and I don't see how it could fail. Stoked for that. I'm kinda thinking that 2015 will finally be my year.

Not Footbag/Life:

So, as I've mentioned earlier, I am diving into the great pool of stand-up comedy. Treating it just like footbag. Starting from the basics, solidifying those, then moving on. It's surprising how much like footbag this has been. I have a ton of material and a good chunk of that organized into the start of a set. The most exciting parts of this is that 1) I have been having clever/funny/hilarious ideas every single day and 2) I have done small performances for Nadiah, and my dad, and I have 2 people laughing under my belt, which sounds dirty, but I assure you it's not. And these weren't just laughs.. They were cracking up :D I funny! Really been working on my persona. That seems so important. If I have a funny persona developed, then anything I do will be funny.. like Will Farrell. But one cool part is that I already worked some hilarious footbag bits into it. I figure, if I just work diligently and improve a little every day, just like footbag, I can get really good after a period of time. On top of this, I'm taking a month-long comedy class in Philly starting in March. Really excited for that. Being taught by a guy that was on the Late Late Show, Brad Trackman. He seems really nice so far.

Also one more cool comedy thing.. Going to see Demetri Martin on March 5th with my dad. So stoked!

Anyway, comedy is going better than expected, and life is cool. Can't wait to start up the footbagging stuff again!

Tell me how the show goes! :)
Also, have you ever read any/either of his books? I read the first one (This is a Book) and very much enjoyed it.

April, I'll let you know how it is! So excited for that.

Also, can't wait to pay footbag this weekend! Ahhh! It's been too long, but at least my knee feels much better!

Also, comedy update.. I have developed and committed to memory, a pretty hilarious 5 minute set! And, yes, of course it used about 2 minutes of -related humor. I'd say this is the equivalent to 20 tiltless with some ok 3's... Pretty close to developing another 5 minute set, too. One step at a time, though. Can't wait to hit Comedy Fearless! :D Comedy has been so fun so far! I basically just make fun of myself.. Too easy! :P :D

Funny thing about me getting into comedy is that, I always compared good footbag runs to stand-up comedy. You never know what to expect next in either of them... I have taken this concept and incorporated it into both my footbag and comedy. Hoping for the best in each one.

Quick update...

I played tonight for the first time in about 2 weeks. Really good session, in terms of showing me what I need to do to take it to the next level.

Started off just getting slowly back into it. Then tried to do some easy genuine 10 contact runs.. That went well for a few tries... I hit at least 1 genuine 10 contact. Not bad for 2 weeks off. However, I realized that the one thing that few things holding me back were when I would tried to bail to 1) Barfly 2) Pdx Whirl 3) Pixie.. I had the sudden realization that my game would easily go next level if I fixed just these 3 things.

So I worked on Barfly and Pdx Whirl. I remembered that I heard someone say that you know you have a good Pdx Whirl or Barfly if you can hit them well from hand toss... I couldn't. I figured this meant that I hadn't been doing either of them correctly. So I spent some time on those. After a while, I was finally able to figure out how to hit both of them on both sides. Then I started doing Hand toss Whirl> Pdx Whirl bs and Hand toss double down> Barfly bs. This was really good for me, I think. It showed me something that I hadn't yet figured out myself... the real motions for these 2 illusive tricks... I think if I keep up with this method for a little while, I can finally get good. Stoked to keep playing. No pain after first session, so I'm pleased to report that.

Sorta highlights were Blurry Whirl b2b, Blurry Whirl> Blurry Torque (only tried this once, but it rolled off my Osis.. didn't try flip, but in a few sessions, I think I can hit it), Blurry Torque on bs was crazy easier today, so was Fog bs.. Did some Pdx Eggs (tried to be Derek) out of curiosity and they felt kinda cool today. Kyle Cook inspired me to try some Solestices b2b.. I hit x3. My record is x4, but I think I can get back to that sometime soon. He also got me to hit Flapper> Pdx Mirage bs.. tougher on flip than I remember. Uhhh... And kinda stylish link that Hogan inspired me to hit was Mobius> Far Gyro Toe. Super stylish.

Session with Bonslizzle, Jackson, and Corey Gerges on Sunday. We're all going to work on badges.. fun fun. But... I think we all need it.

Stoked to play with Nathan again. It's been since Christmas! Holy crap. Long time. So yeah, should be fun.

Life news:

1) I got my interview for the Fish Biologist job all set up! Feb. 27th at 111 am. So stoked for it. One step in the right direction..

2) My girlfriend is awesome. I came home to a mind numbingly delicious edible arrangements bouquet on my front porch from her. Chocolate covered pineapples, chocolate covered strawberries, grapes, honeydew, cantaloupe, etc.. bunch of really nice fruits arranged like a bouquet of flowers, but you fucking eat dem. It was a cool experience to receive one of these.

3) I have a solid 5 minutes of my comedy set committed to memory! I think it's really funny, just hope others do too :P And I'm stoked that I keep getting new ideas for future sets that I would like to do. Really exciting stuff, so far. And I'm sure it'll get even more exciting with this comedy class I'm going to be taking in March. Cannot wait for that! :D

Been digging a lot of these bands recently.. I feel like most of you will hate them lol

So I had a weekend this weekend. It was one of the more boring weekends ever. It snowed Friday into Sunday, and it was too much snow to drive in, which postponed a nice date I had planned with Nadiah. I did get to see her today though, which was nice. After that, I had my second session back since my break with Nathan Bonslaver and Corey Gerges. Nathan hit some new fancy pants things. Some of which made me want to spoon out my fancy pants eyes. Pants eyes? How does that even work? Sounds like a local legend... *hill billy accent* "You don't wanna go in those woods, boy... 'Ol Pants Eyes lives in those woods." I hope I find 'Ol Pants Eyes one day. But yeah, Nate was hitting some cool stuff.

I was having a pretty ok session. I hit some cool links, new tricks, and ok runs. It was on Bonslizzle's camera, so there should be video in the near-to-far-off-future. Cool.

At the session, there was one really funny thing that happened.. I'm a very picky person with the music that goes into my ears, and I don't like a lot of mainstream garbage.. Nathan knows this, and started asking me if I liked some bands that I don't like, so I replied "no" to all of them.. then he asks, "Well, do you like U2?" and without a second thought, I snickered as if the question was a joke. I felt like such a dickhead, but I explained myself to Bonslizzle and we had a nice chuckle about it.

I took (mainly) Ethan Husted's word and bought a month supply of Glucosamine/Fish Oil/other joint stuff.. There are 30 little bags with a cocktail of AA battery-sized fucking horse pills. They are going to be a blast to take. I just hope they help me with my joint lubey problem.

Taught myself the basic parts of The Box (juggling trick) this weekend. Juggling sucks but is kinda fun. It sucks because I can't do it well :P But yeah, jugglejuggle.

I don't care to write more, because there is a cat on my bed, giving me the death stare.

Had a session after work today. I'm sick of sucking at toes. I've always wanted to just feel comfortable shredding toe contacts, but that's proving to be a doozy. So, after talking to Cory Allan a little bit about toe game, he basically said that drilling DATW will help Pixies... developing muscles.. stuff.. So, I plan on that.

That's how my session started. DATWs bs. God, I suck at them. I think this is one reason why my triple dex game is off. After a chunk of DATW practice, I started messing with other stuff. Spins became my new topic, because lately, I've noticed that I have a very noticeable flip spin. I wanted to fix that today and I did. I used Merkon as a test trick. I can do strong too easily, but I miss flip a lot and that shouldn't happen. I realized that strong spin was going from 12 to 6 and flip spin was from 12 to 7.5 (Oh, these numbers are coming from that training mat with the clock and cartesian plane on it.. I made it 2 years ago, but I just started using it again today). So this made me understand that my weak spin was not being set behind my back like my strong spin... It took a bit to figure out how, but I fixed it. Now I just have to keep the set consistent when I play.

Then I started messing with Spinning Symp Swirl. I have one really fucking good, almost-never-drop Spinning Symp Swirl, which I can like Ripstein out of with relative ease.. Spinning Symp Swirl might have been one of my first 4 ADDs ever.. I remember writing about it on the 4thish page of my blog... but the other one has always been bad. So I wanted to fix it, maybe incorporating the method I used for Merkons... No go. Didn't work. In fact, my strong Spinning Symp Swirl is my FLIP Merkon??? So I just started messing with it, when I noticed something crazy. When I did my strong side, I HEARD this: "chh-thud-thud-swoosh".. when I tried flipside, I HEARD this: "chh-thud--swoosh"... They SOUNDED different! I realized right away that this could be a new training method for me. So, I tried to make my flipside sound how my strong side sounded... Bang. First try. and again... and again. I was pretty blown away how well playing by ear worked. Then I had a dumb idea, but I wanted to see how close I could get with this new method... Which brings me to my only real highlight of tonight's session:

Highlight:

Spinning Ducking Symp Swirl bs!!! Both new tricks! Flip actually came before strong... and they both came first try!!! And I hit each a few more times after that to understand the motion better. I think if anyone asks me, this is now my best trick on both sides.

I had a really good run too. Started with Tombstone, had a Rev Swirl> Blurry Whirl and other stuff, but was really dense. Hit some really nice Tombstones tonight.

I am slowly learning how to finally play this footbag game. I think it's about to get exciting. Can't wait to play again.

Oh yeah, fixed my Flip Pdx Torque too. I realized I wasn't jumping into the air on flipside, but I was on strong side. Again, the sounded different... Ended session on Pdx Torque> Blur bs.

How DATWs would help with Pixies is beyond me. I don't think that would work for a lot of people.

ATW+Orbit are the best Toe practice, and you can just warm up with them.

These are easy tricks, but hard links, the goal with each should be at least 20 contacts:
DATW > PLO > repeat
Eggbeater > PLO > repeat

Pigs, Blades and Boulders help with explosiveness after a set. As in, they lower the time it takes you to jump for that Eggbeater after you set the bag. You'll find yourself lowering this time with easier tricks like Atoms and Smears, increasing your consistency and making stuff look unrushed.

You can still do consecutive DATWs, they help with Toe Barrages, Toe Double Pickups and TATWs.
I hate bad form and I'm a hypocrite.

Thanks Vojta. I can pretty much do atws and orbits til I get tired, and I always warm up with them. I think I'm just going keep practicing Pixies until I can do them well, I guess.

Pure session. No bullshit.

Highlights:

 First try new 5 Fearless: Spinning Ducking Osis> Spinning Ducking Osis> Spinning Ducking Butterfly> Spinning Whirl> Scorpion's Tail
 Also first try, new 5 Fearless: Ripped Warrior> Blurry Whirl> Spinning Ducking Butter> Spinning Whirl> Scorpion's Tail... each 5 set came with little effort, which was fucking rad.
 Toe Far Twirl BSOS.. hit it one side out of Fog. Didn't try the other side, but I think I can hit that, too.
 Swirl> Spinning Symp Swirl bs
 Tombstone b2b> dense run with Blurry Whirl and Stepping Whirl on the other side
 Tombstone> Reverse Swirl *rpt
 Hardly worth noting for me, but I finally hit my first Whirligig :P I say this, because I don't see myself doing those in the future. I think it's too hard on the body. I didn't try it flipside, because I don't want to ruin my healing knee again. Also said hardly worth it because I'm about to be onto my 8th year playing freestyle.. I hit my first Whirligig near the end of my 7th year? Kind of pathetic :D

On top of those highlights, I also drilled some stuff. I'm now realizing that, in footbag, the tricks you drill are important, but it's also important to have your go-to links to get out of awkward situations. And on top of that, it's important to play how your body WANTS to play. Gyro Blink was always an awkward Butterfly bail afterward for me, but one day, my body just started doing Paradons out of them... I realized that this is what my body WANTED to do.. there was no need to force a Pixie/Atomic set here.. just do Paradon. So my game is falling together before my eyes, ad it's really exciting.

Also, I was thinking about this today.. I think Vasek was the best Ripstein player ever. He put them in after the hardest and most unsuspecting tricks. I think that's awesome, so I'm attempting to start learning Ripsteins really well on both sides in order to do similar stuff to what Vasek did with them. It's such a WOW trick and needs to be placed in a very WOW spot. I hit strong Ripstein x3 tonight, that was kinda cool.

Also, I have been learning some juggling tricks on the side. Just taught myself Half Shower and Full Shower last night. It's kinda fun, but footbag is definitely way more fun :) Good night.
