Re: RCS IN DA CLUB
Been a couple of weeks since I last kicked. My back wasn't feeling bad, just not healthy enough to put it through shred. I was really excited to play last night. I kept it really short so I am hoping to kick again tonight.
Mostly worked on easy stuff to help my consistency. I need to spend more time with the bag.
Only two things worth mentioning:
stepping op osis>blur>dimwalk rpt
blurry drifter bsos
I recorded a string just for the heck of it. I'm so sick of losing control of gyro clippers in my strings. I've gotta take those out. My mental game is not keeping up with my shred. In this string I meant to do gyro osis but accidentally did clipper, I did a gyro osis after. Also meant to do op symp mirage where I did symp open and dropped.
I should be getting my plane tickets for PSU Jam soon.

That is exactly what I think when I'm not practicing enough. You can go on all day about different practice methods and techniques, but in the end just spending a lot of time with the bag is what makes the difference imo. Anyway, bustinjustin wrote: I need to spend more time with the bag.
Hi Justin! I saw you posted in Jamps VI on FB and said you were going, so I thought to myself "better brush up on Justin Dale lore." I was going to go to youtube next, but I got distracted by modified and what do you know! Justin Dale! I watched your string from today and an older video on your channel. Can't wait to shred with you at Jamps!

You're out of the knee brace! That's awesome, man. I'm currently wearing a patella strap for precautionary measures. That string was solid. I can see what you mean by mental game not keeping up with physical game. And funny thing is, I noticed it immediately because I have the same problem sometimes. Mine look exactly how it did at the end of your run. Sometimes I get "caught" in Swirls. Far Symp Swirl> Reverse Swirl> Swirl> Swirl> Far Symp SwirDROP and stuff like that. I think I either need to figure out how to think more clearly and not just jumble them together like that, or I just need to drill my Swirls better. Anyway, the run was great. Your game is looking a lot better than it was during your first weeks back in the game. Great to see that. Stoked to shred and hang out with you at Jamps!

Dreaming of Nemesis
Life has been crazy the last couple of weeks. I just bought a new home and have had to spend a lot of time selling the old one. I haven't had much free time and haven't been getting much sleep. Thankfully everything that needed doing is done and things are almost back to normal. The old house is on the market and there are lots of showings which means I'm homeless a lot of the time. Good news though because I've been spending a lot of time at the gym. Over the last 2 weeks I haven't worked out, and have mostly been drinking and eating ice cream. I figured I'd have to make up for it when everything got settled but to my surprise I was down about 4 lbs when I got back into the gym. I'm feeling light, and powerful, getting to kick last night felt great. I just wish my footbag game wasn't so weak.
Getting old sucks. I got to a point where I really wanted to drill paradon and pdx drifter for an hour straight and get those moves back to perfection. About 10 tries of each and my back starts telling me I have to stop. I'm still figuring out the best way to train. I can't put too many reps on any single move in a given session. I'm very jealous of everyone with deep pdx drifters. Guys like David, Evan, Jim and Nick to name a few that can step out of pdx drifter with wanton abandon. I would love to have blurry drifter in my fearless. Not that I can't do it, I just can't link it easily. I will continue to pursue getting that delay deeper.
Things I hit last night:
20 open legover (not really worth mentioning, but I couldn't get it last session and got it first try this session)
fusion
jani walker>swirl bs (btb coming)
nuclear tap>leg beater bs
16 drifter (get past 20 already, geesh
)
far simple swirl>symp whirl bs
symp flurry
I really wanted to hit nemesis this session, I thought I'd be able to get right back to hitting it, no such luck. I spent the rest of that time working on blurriest.
I hit a great string I was really happy about and didn't have the camera on, I thought, "oh, it's gonna be that kind of session" so I filmed there after and didn't really do much. I tried to record a tutorial video that didn't turn out. I'll try again on Friday, when I kick with Reilley (very exciting).
I stopped myself from doing osis>gyro clip on my 22nd contact, so at least that's progress. No more gyro clippers!

Congrats on the new home! Crazy periods in life are annoying, but usually they're necessary steps to getting to where you need to be next. Glad to hear things are normalizing.bustinjustin wrote:Life has been crazy the last couple of weeks. I just bought a new home and ... Regression
Looking at the last video I posted I noticed a real regression. Too much BOP and nothing interesting besides the 2 ADD gyro toe, boo that man.
Kicking with Reilley tonight was a blast. We focused on hitting specific combos rather than doing runs (edit:) and I think it made for a much more fun session for both of us. Trying to do runs when you haven't played much can be really frustrating. Doing sessions this way lets you feel accomplished because you are hitting things that are attainable and at the end of the session you can look back on the list and feel satisfied and that you've made progress.
Reilley hit:
Down>ss down bs
Down>ss down rpt
Open muted clip bs
ss down>osis rpt
Ripwalk bs
Blink bs
Omc>blink bs
Shut swirl bs
Justin hit:
Dyno>swirl bs
Matador>ripwalk bs
Open muted clip>blink bs
Jani walker>swirl bs
Atom smasher btb
Jani walker btb
Down swirl>symp whirl bs
Blurriest>down rpt
My jani walkers were on point this session. I really felt them coming back.

Re: Regression
Been really busy again. We accepted an offer on the old house and Kelly (my girlfriend) and I are all moved into the new place. Sadly this has left me no time for footbag. I've only played 4 times in the last 2 months. I've been really stressed out about going to Jamps and being unprepared. I have to sense of style, no consistency, no trick selection, no confidence in my game right now. I typically would put in around ~10 hours a week of playing time leading up to an event. I'm really behind and I've got to put my game back together in 20 days.
I started with a new gym in my new neighborhood yesterday and look forward to using their shred space. I also have a 2 car garage now that will allow me to play at home when necessary.
I played for about 20 minutes after my work out last night and worked on consistency, BOP drills and 2 add toes. I'm hoping to play a lot more this week and get a good session under my belt.
Gym stats (1 hr elliptical):
3.13 miles
927 calories
~189 lbs (new gym doesn't have an electric scale, I'm skeptical of the old style ones, can't get an exact measurement)

Re: RCS IN DA CLUB
Kicked last night. Spent the entire time doing 2 add toes, BOP drills, spins, drifters and ripwalks. Focusing on getting my delays precise so I can get my consistency back. I'm kicking again tonight with Reilley and I have a list of combos I'm excited to try. Weather here is really nice this week. Today's high is 70 degrees.
I did one string at the end of the session for the blog.
I was very please with the attempt. Broke 30 contacts, the flow wasn't too boring and didn't have any uncontrolled moments.
The new shred room at the gym has a small window to the work out area. After I turned off the camera a guy who was working out came running in to say he saw the string and thought it was pretty awesome.
I love my new neighborhood and this new gym. It's got a small town feel and everyone is so nice. Quite the change of pace from Seattle. It's a mom and pop independent gym so it's not very crowded and the staff aren't compelled to harass you to bring in members or pay for services.

3 Times
Had a very productive week. I did 2 workouts and kicked 3 times. The fact that I was able to kick today is really encouraging. First time I've been capable of kicking this much in one week and my body has held up really well. I kicked with Reilley on Friday and was inspired after watching Allan's videos from his blog. I kicked in front of a museum and had fun hitting op down rev swirls.
I filmed and tried making a video from that session but my video making capabilities are very frustrating right now. I'm in the process of figuring out the best way to easily produce high quality videos shot on my iPhone using my PC. I'm running Windows 7 and this version of WMM seems terrible. I actually liked the XP version. If anyone would like to add their input I'd love to hear it.
I'm playing around with whip a lot right now. I can't paradox whirl on my good side any more and I'm trying out replacement combos. I didn't write down everything I hit last 2 sessions because I planned on making videos.
Here's the video from today. It has lots of flaws but it's not worth fixing for the blog. Videos should continue to get better as I figure things out. Edit: For this video I edited it using YouTube, WMM glitches.
There's a flaw in my flip spin and I've been working on fixing it for a long time. I don't seem to spin on my center of balance and it doesn't have the same rhythm as my good side. The ones I did today weren't too bad so I left them in so I can study them.

Re: 3 Times
For simple edits, I actually recommend using iMovie on the iPhone itself. I've sent out most of my recent videos using it (shot, edited, uploaded) and I don't even touch half the stuff it can do or spend really any time refining (obviously). Another interesting option is Adobe Premiere Clip.bustinjustin wrote:I'm in the process of figuring out the best way to easily produce high quality videos shot on my iPhone using my PC.
You can also do more complex edits on the phone itself using other apps. Pinnacle Studio Pro in particular looks interesting. I used their desktop app briefly waaaaay back in the day.
For more complex edits on the desktop, I'm supposing that you're against simply pirating Adobe Premiere? I've not lived on Windows for this sort of thing for too long to have relevant opinions on the state of other editors, but Premiere is basically the gold standard on Windows. If yarr not a pirate, I'm betting that older versions are pretty cheap; CS4 or something?
Referring back to Pinnacle Studio on the iPhone, it looks like the desktop version(s) they have are still going strong...
Your other option on the desktop is to dual-boot with something like Ubuntu Studio. While I've never actually used this, I think it would be an interesting experiment.

I remember the XP version gave me seizures![]()
I'm really enjoying watching your videos. Cool new room, and those far simple twists are looking good
Let's talk soon about a visit one way or another...

Good to see you playing, and the new spot looks nice!
Also, what did you think of the NCAA championship game last night?
Have you talked to Erik Chan? You might be able to take some pages out of his playbook.bustinjustin wrote:I can't paradox whirl on my good side any more and I'm trying out replacement combos. .

Re: RCS IN DA CLUB
Thanks a lot Allan and Ken for posting replies. Means a lot. I'll take the time to make a proper reply tomorrow when I'm on a computer.
I worked out and kicked again tonight and I am T-I-R-E-D. I wanted to skip shred but doing even toes and clipper are helping my game at this point. Definitely starting to feel more comfortable.
Did some toe shuffle which is feeling a lot better. Did some rev ups on bs. A good side rev swirling symp whirl. Needed low impact moves to practice so I worked on rakes. Got 4 consecutive practicing each different variation. Most comfortable I've ever felt doing them.
Going to take tomorrow off and hit it hard Thur. Make another video.

iMovie
Holy crap I'm an idiot. Made a video using iMovie tonight from last Friday's footage and it was amazing. Really easy to use, faster because I can scroll though the footage and the quality is great. Also gave me more control, I could watch a move back and forth at any speed over and over. This is really going to help me break down my moves and my game. Don't know why I haven't been doing this all along.Allan wrote:For simple edits, I actually recommend using iMovie on the iPhone itself.

Re: RCS IN DA CLUB
Not much to say today. I played hard, but could have planned the session better. I don't feel like I accomplished as much as I could have.
My single leg double dexes are frustratingly thin. Gotta get em deep.
A good string from Reilley and I.

What is twist? Reverse swirl or down rev swirl (wouldn't simple be implied?)? I was hitting far simple down rev swirl so I was confused by the comment.Allan wrote:and those far simple twists are looking good

Re: RCS IN DA CLUB
Twist is "reverse swirl." Like Whip and Down and many DS name replacements, I like it soooo much better...
Sorry for the confusion as I missed the Down part; so, I'd call it "Far Down Simple Twist"??
I don't think the simple is implied as it's possible to do it not[\i] simple; Nick P. does all sorts of far twist stuff that isn't simple. I'd grant that adding the Down in there would make the timing utterly ridiculous, but it's possible, no?
I also put the Down first, as the Simple modifies the Twist, not the Down; you could do both dexes Simple (if you were an alien or something) so ...
I dunno, far butterfly reverse swirl works for me too

When I was talking about iPhone video editors above, there was one I was trying do hard to remember, but just couldn't. Today I came across it and figured I'd post it here:
It's called Filmic Pro (App store link). It's been used by a lot of pros to make actual movies directly on iPhone Like this doc on Sean Malto...
Anyhow, if iMovie is working for you, that's cool

Re: RCS IN DA CLUB
Got a special video for the blog peeps today.
Got to kick with Ken Somolinos on Wed. who was in the area training for work. In spite of some complications on his end we were able to get together for a fun evening.
It was nice to have a session focusing on runs instead of combos. Just letting my game flow and seeing where its at. It's going to help me immensely with my training for the rest of the week as I have a much better idea of what I need to focus on to get better for the upcoming event. I would not have had a session like this to prep otherwise.
We kicked at my gym and they were really nice about letting guests in and even though it was busy and the multi-purpose room had a class, there was ample room for us to kick in the work out area.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXcUgwKVscU
After the session we went to my local bar and watched the Golden State Warriors win their record setting 73rd game of the year. Reilley and I had a lot of fun watching the game with another avid basketball fan like Ken.
I can't say enough what a great time I had.
