I started working on the video from Vietnam. I'm not particularly impressed with what I got so far, and I was less impressed when the computer crashed and I lost all my work. I might continue on that project later tonight, let's see. I've done a bit of kicking today and I had some nice long runs, I also hit fairy ss torque and pixie op torque. Did a motion sickness at the end of my short session and I had something coming out of bs spikehammer (stepping ducking PS mirage).
I have thought of a new project to work on, actually it's something I have mentioned in the blog before, but haven't really figured out how to do. The idea is a fantasy style competition, which I might look at running while Worlds is on. During my prac I did some playing around with a quiz on Google. Anyway, I think you could set something up on there to say that if you have x person selected in your team (I would set levels and you have a limit on how many players from a certain tier you can get, then the form would match if you have x player, you get however many points. Probably a lot of work, and there's probably an easier way to set it up, but that's a way I could see myself getting it to work. Something I was very pleased with myself on the prac was creating a quiz on the Google Form that marked itself, which my teacher didn't know how to do, so that's something.

I had some good long runs in that session, best was 41. In the second session I think the best was mid 30s. I've been trying to mix up the tricks I do in getting longer runs, as when I'm aiming to get a higher score in that department, it's a lot of repeated tricks, so if I can give some more variety, and not just at the start, that will serve me well.
Would be great to see some blogs about Euros. Wonder what happened to Jakub M in the routines, looks like he smashed it in the other departments, but I think from the post I saw on Facebook he was 5th with Vasek, Andreas, Tomas Tucek, Alex Trenner ahead.
I would like to go to some tournaments outside of Australia that are not Worlds some days. At first I was starting to get into a rhythm but then dropping just as I was getting set. I actually had a few goes at rubberman and had one where I got to the fifth contact. I hadn't even tried that in quite a long time so I should put some focus on that. So now that the prac is over I actually have a couple of days properly off.
Caroline is going to look after Nicolas tomorrow so we can have a night out so that should be a bit of fun. We are going to go to the theatre and have some dinner before that, then probably some drinks afterwards. I was planning on going to see a band afterwards but I don't think I will bother.
Speaking of bands, Alexisonfire are going to be playing in Australia. Tickets go in sale to the only show announced so far, which is a camping festival in the bush in Victoria. I'm tempted to fork out the $200 for it, it's just after we come back from Chile. I'm not sure if it will sell out straight away, but I'm also holding out for some of their own shows. I imagine once that festival sells out they will announce a tour.

I don't think I will go to the festival. I'm just going to bet on them playing sideshows, or potentially in South America while I'm over there. I think the festival is one or two days after we come back from Chile, so might be best to skip that. So fingers crossed for some side shows.

So back to that good session, well it was mainly the warming up section, which started with 1119 consecutive kicks, that's the first time over 1000 for me in ages, and I was feeling pretty good though I might go through and break my record, which needs about 1000 more, but you get a feeling sometimes if you're in for a long one. I was happy to just pass about 500 though, I haven't tried that out in a long while. I'm going to practice my 5 minute consecutives in the near future. I would like to get maybe 600 or so to start, I have previously worked at about a kick per minute but you need a lot more than that to be serious on it.
After consecutives I went for tiltless and on my first run I got 165, so that was pretty good. I think that's my best but it's still short of the goal of 200, which I would like to break soon, or at least by the end of the year.
The Raiders just started playing now, unfortunately I am at work, but I'm following along on this screen that shows the play by play scores. I'm going to watch the Copa America final tomorrow, I've been lucky to see the last couple of Chile games, and now it's a rematch with Argentina, should be a good match, but ARG have won the last two encounters since the Copa America final last year. (I think both 2-1). Actually I will be watching it in a similar fashion today as I just remembered I swapped my shift for tomorrow. I don't have such a strong feeling Chile will win that one though, and it's different to win your first trophy in 100 years, to winning the first trophy in 1 year. Somebody gave me some tickets to the new Ice Age movie, so we will go and watch that with Nicolas tomorrow night.

I had a good session today with Dianne and Caroline. Actually I was playing quite poorly, but I got a few good tricks in, a couple of 30ish runs, and had a go at a timed 5 min consecutive (508). So that has me on level of when I was putting in practice for that. At the 2001 Australian Championships I got 496 for the victory. We've had a few 1 minute consecs events where I have got around 100, so I always aim for 100/min but if I want to get up to higher levels I've got to up that quite significantly.
What other tricks did I hit today? I did tobius (mobius from toe). I was hitting that quite consistently in maybe 2011? There's a video of me doing one in Trafalgar Square. I haven't really thought of that trick in a while, but it's a good transition from toe to end on clipper, but I need more tricks that transition the other way.
I submitted my video for the contest, so if it's in the contest then they will have it there on the screen and maybe they liked it. That was an aim I set for myself last year, and it's a good way of participating without actually being there.
I also had a short session during my dinner break and had a 20 contact run, I didn't even go out of jeans and jumper, it was quite cold.
Chile won the Copa America, I was following on the live blog, or actually a few live blogs and twitter, it was reasonably exciting but it's not the same as watching properly, which is not the same as actually being in Chile, which is also not the same as when Chile win the cup for the first time in close to 100 years in the home country, which I also missed. It was good to chat to a few friends from the Chile days, though I mainly got in touch with them after the 7-0 victory over Mexico. I guess now you have to ask the question - could this Chile team win the World Cup? Maybe, they could definitely go to semifinals.
We took Nico to the movies for the first time last night, I got free tickets to the new Ice Age movie. OOOOOO Big TV, big TV he kept saying. Off to Sydney for the weekend. Not sure if I will catch any kickers there. I am sure I will have a kick though, hopefully I can get some beachside shots as we are staying a couple of blocks from the beach. And this beach actually got severely damaged in some recent storms, so that could be quite interesting.

I had a short kick today, about 30 mins. My best run had I think 27 contacts, and from 10 to about 23 or 24, it was pretty well just ducking and I think most of them were unique contacts, I can't really remember, there might have been a couple of repeats, but it was flowing quite well with zulus and weaving and ducking butterfly, spinning ducking, quite a mix.
I went for a bushwalk today, into a place called Wanniassa Hills. I'm not sure if I went to the official Mt Wanniassa, but I got a few ups and downs and it was good to get out of the house. I also stopped by this very old skatepark, which is, to use the Aussie expression - "rough as guts". But I had a good bit of fun there.
I met with my supervisor for my next prac, that will start next term, which is a couple of weeks away. I would like to manage that a bit better than last time, I didn't really get any full days off at all. I may have mentioned that I got a whole bunch of extra time off that I was meant to get from literally years ago (despite the fact that I left and came back), so that should help me out a bit. That will actually help me out a great deal.

I think I may have crossed the border once or twice on some adventures - I did go out to Gunning, but those aren't real trips, so I think this should be a good one.
We have our federal election on Saturday, I might try and do my vote tomorrow so we can leave earlier for the trip. It will be interesting, the predictions have it at about 50/50 so either side could win. We shall see. I have a feeling it will come down to some independents or smaller parties having a balance of power, but you never know.

We spent the weekend at the beach and that was pretty good. We have come back to Canberra and it's pouring with rain so that's a bit disappointing. The trip went well, saw quite a few friends and had some family get togethers, but we didn't have much free time for ourselves.

Those predictions of a 50/50 vote were right on, there's no winner in the election and they are still counting the votes, so that will take a while. Maybe next week they will have chosen a prime minister in a minority government. It was a very long and boring election campaign (although not as long as the US style ones), but once it came down to the votes things were very interesting.
I have seen a little bit of video from the US Open, would have been cool to be there. Speaking of video, Marcin Bujko put a short video up on Facebook today, awesome to see him back in action. At both Worlds 2009 and 2010 I had a pool with him in it, which made my chances very slim.
So last year I might have breathed a sigh of relief, to have a bit of variety. All I needed to do was beat one of those 5 blokes in front of me and I would be right. Unfortunately #5 in that list made it to the finals...
I don't know if I mentioned it here, but I like the idea of having my tally of getting to 5 Worlds before I turn 35. I'm 31 now and my birthday is in a few months, and I'm not going this year. That will give me 3 years to get to 2 more, which is hopefully a reasonable expectation.
Portland at this stage looks ok. I should be finished my degree and I would like to do that trip as a bit of a celebration. I have a bit of an idea in my head of going through Hawaii, that would be pretty awesome I think. I have a gut feeling that the following Worlds will be in the US again (that's not going on any official info, or even rumours, just a feeling, so I think it will be a pass on that if I get to Portland. If not, then that might be worth pursuing. Hard to predict the future even 2 years from now, but hopefully I will be working as a teacher by then. Speaking of that I passed my coursework I had to do for my recent prac. I heard a lot of people failed the course last year, so I was actually quite concerned about that. Onto the next semester, I have another prac and then Science and Arts subjects. Then I should finish off with a last prac, Maths and Social Sciences.
I also played some footbag today in the garage. It's been raining all day so it was good to exercise. I got one run of 20 contacts, but nothing much else spectacular. Finished with pixie diving whirl, which actually took a lot of attempts. I wasn't getting the power like I normally do on pixie ducking/diving so the bag was spraying all over the place.

Another few days off, which is nice as I start my next prac next week, so that will be another month of very few days off.
For the first time in a while I got to have a reasonably serious session. It was raining this morning so I was playing in the garage. Aside from just playing at all, my main focus was to get a bit of variety in the runs, and also if I was doing a trick that went from clipper to toe, to do another toe trick before moving back into clipper action.
I think 40 contacts was my best guiltless run. Though I dropped on a flip pdx illusion.

Bit of interesting discussion on advancements in fs football vs footbag. Justin Dale summed things up pretty well, saying there's been a big range of components introduced and mastered, but in footbag there is more technicality, like the consecutive triple dexes, fearless links etc.
Speaking of non technical things with the ball, here's a little clip of me from the end of the day.

I think reasonable ankle crank is a big help. Try and cushion in right in that middle part of the foot. It's hard at first to not let the ball roll away, but just kind of have the centre of the ball where you would normally stall a bag.

I'm going to start this post as a follow up from some things I've written in Derek's blog. He mentioned something about a perfect footbag location, and I wrote back with mine.
This is not it, but it's from the same day. I was just talking last night about how great a time I had in Switzerland. That was years ago now (2009, and I also popped in to Zurich the following year). Caroline is going to be staying with us the next few nights before she goes to Europe.
Just thinking about these kind of adventures is getting me a little jealous, as well as bringing back some good memories.
Anyway, the story is one I've probably mentioned before and ends with jumping into a Swiss lake as the sun sets into that very same lake. And then - we all came out to Montreaux, on the Lake Geneva shoreline.
I was hoping to get an outdoor session at the skatepark today, but the rain stopped that. It may even snow here. I got to skate for about 15 mins though, so I was pleased with that, did a few good tricks too.
I am ready for bed now.

I was hoping to get an outdoor session at the skatepark today, but the rain stopped that. It may even snow here. I got to skate for about 15 mins though, so I was pleased with that, did a few good tricks too.

The Montreux Jazz Festival was on at that time, so we had got some beers and gone down there to watch some music. And it was the Lake Geneva that we had dived into earlier in the evening.

I have played a couple of times in the last days, but never for very long. Today I was just mucking around outside with Nicolas and just went for a string, the first one was over 20 contacts which was a nice start. Yesterday I played in the garage, was glad to find some space as it's quite crowded in there at this moment. Best run in that shortish session was 37 and there were a couple over 30 as well. I will probably try and play in my dinner break but it's not warm at all. It was actually snowing here in the city yesterday, that's quite rare.
I like this buildup to Ken's little project, I think I know what it is and I'm just going to say some of my guesses were to bump down the pages so it could announce it on the top of the page, but maybe his announcement hasn't come right on time so there might need to be some more guesses to get to the top of next page.
And if I am right in the idea, then it is actually something I have thought of doing and I look forward to the project taking place. I dusted off a little project I started a while ago, which was creating some kind of long term ranking for Worlds results. This is related to a project I want to test out for Worlds, which is a fantasy style thing. I might try and set that up this evening and see how it works. I am holding off a little longer to see if a few more people register, but I think the rego closes in a few days.

I think you would have Vasek and Jindra as locks in the top spots, and Evan is supposedly going, but not registered, so let's give him a lock too.
In a best of the rest, you've got Jakub M, he was in finals last year, and he did well in other events at Euros, but not routines. Rafal Kaleta did well at routines and I would tip him to win sick 3 or sick 1 and probably do enough crazy tricks to find himself in the final.
The Finnish fellas are all pretty good, but I don't think there's so much activity lately, and I imagine Santeri will do net again. Guys like Alex Trenner and Andreas Nawrath could be a reasonable shot at getting through, also Jakub G has form, but from a fair while back. If there's 8 going through from a reasonably small field, that's a fair chunk that will have a chance in the finals. Hopefully a few more will register in the last few days before it's on.

Here's what my number crunching tells me - mainly that a lot of the top players are going to be missing from Worlds. I have assigned a points value to placings at Worlds back to 2005 (down to those who were in equal 9th). I think I have explained this before, but I've just updated last year's results as well.
Anyway, according to my table and the players entered, this could be a kind of seeding.
1. (1)Vasek, he's on top of the rankings. The number in brackets will be there number in the list, which is kind of like the ATP rankings in tennis
2. (5) Jindra Smola. World championship gets you a fair few points. If he had've made it last year, his rank would be higher. You can see in the absent list are the 3 other world champions of the past 10 years (Honza, Milan, Damian is the order)
3. (8) Evan Gatesman. Fun fact, Jim Penske is slightly ahead in this ranking, and is the top from USA. Evan's not registered yet though.
4. (22) Taishi Ishida. Taishi has made finals a couple of times now, and got that excellent Shred 30 victory (which has no bearing on the scores). You can see though there are 14 missing high ranked players on this list. A lot of them are inactive at the moment though.
5. (27) Patrick Cerny. I don't even really know who this is, but he made finals a couple of years back and finished fifth, which gets him ahead of plenty of others.
6. (30) Rafal Kaleta. This is my darkhorse for a win. This is a guy who has won a lot of these big trick type contests, if he can fit that kind of stuff together with some good flow, then watch out Vasek.
7. (35) Mikko Lepisto. I mentioned the Finns that are registered and I think he is a good chance to feature in finals too.
8. (37) Jakub Mosciszewski. Just based on last year's result alone. I'm thinking he will have some sort of heavy metal based routine this year.

Rene Rühr and Ken would have both been good to have there, but doesn't look like they can make it and before we get to Taishi we have a list of Jorden Moir, Bartek Bubula and Norek. So there you have a quick run through of the top 20 in this listing, if you were interested.

I played today, just in the driveway. Nicolas was playing with some pebbles there so I was regularly interrupted to go and fill up a truck or bucket with rocks. My best run was 26, which was a good mix of mostly unique tricks with plenty of bsos tricks in there. Aside from working on the variety in general, I'm sometimes working on removing the filler. So many runs are repeats of butterfly tricks and ducking tricks and then mixing them up a little bit.

I look grumpy in that clip. I must have sensed that I was about to head off to work shortly afterwards. I believe if I filmed a video now my expression would be grumpier. It has been a long night. I did well to get through my first prac without illness but before this next one has even started I feel I am going to have a bit of a struggle.
The other day I hit pixie ducking gyro toe. I think that's the first time I've done that.

I played a bit today. Never enough to really get going, but really pleased to do anything at all. I've been rundown and sick in the past week and haven't really had much opportunity for physical activity at all. I had a run over 20 contacts, and I finished with stepping op swirl. I also had flip whirling swirl come of the foot, I think that's the first time I've come close to that, though I hit whirling rev swirl a while back.
Great to see that Ken's podcast is up and running and that there are heap recorded already. A podcast is something I have thought of doing. I was doing that interview series a while back on Shred Global, which people seemed to like. It's a bit of a pain to do all the recording etc. So that's really great that's happening, but I am also impressed with myself, that as soon as it was hinted at, I was like - hey, sounds like a podcast. Which probably killed Ken's hype for a while. He's probably prepared his post going, oh they'll never guess what my secret project is...and then straight away, PLOP.
I wrote a few thoughts about the actual content of the podcast somewhere else, I thought that was a really good chat. I just had a look at the Worlds registration, which is closed now and we have a couple of new contenders registered in the late stages, Anssi and Marcin. Both of these are interesting because they have plenty of runs on the board, but they've had injuries etc. I wouldn't be surprised to see both of them in the finals though. Would be cool to be going but fingers crossed for next year.

So I just touched down in Slovakia. Um, no I didn't, I'm at work. I'm getting a bit jealous seeing all these posts on Facebook. Not much to get jealous about on here, not many posts from Euro locations.
I've been working on this Fantasy Footbag thing tonight, since Worlds is approaching. Basically I split people into 7 different groups, the first 6 are groups of the 3, using the rankings that I compiled.
Give this a try. Let's see if it works. I think it should work fine. You just pick one from each group, and then the different players will get scores from their results at Worlds in the different events. All these rankings are from routines but I'll figure it out for the different freestyle events, depending what results get posted up. Hard doing it from afar.

I think that's a good rule to keep in mind, once you go from clipper to toe, you should try to do another toe trick. I had a good one with something like spinning mirage>symp mirage>butterfly>blur>DATW>butterfly>double pickup>smear into some other stuff. I think there was a tap a little bit later on. I stopped playing for a while and just went for one last run before going to work, 30 contacts straight up, so that was good. I did purposefully not focus on variety in that one though, as I wanted to get at least one nice long run before packing up.

Very interesting concept. I wonder if this could eventually help develop better seeding at events too. Like if somebody is consistently out performing their expected fantasy value, they should probably be ranked higher at events seeding. I filled one out, but the pool with Paloma posed a potential problem. Is she competing in Open and Women's? If so there's no issue, but if she's doing Open circle and Women's routines, how would her routine results get factored in compared against people competing in Open routines?
