Short session today. Got rained out.
Played with a really choice bag where it felt like I was floating and dropping was difficult. Cool feeling.
Had one run that was neat: pixie near and far illusion BSOS, stepping near and far illusion BSOS, and ducking pdx illusion BSOS. I don't know if I've ever hit ducking pdx illusion, so getting it in so deep midstring felt cool. Prooobably the, but I don't care much. Oh, that was a neat run because I've never done illusion tricks -- mostly because they hurt my knees. Decided to start trying to do more of them. Love stepping near illusion. Such a cool trick. I guess not too surprisingly since it's the step down from my favourite footbag trick, wet dream.

That was about it.
Some annoying kids wouldn't leave us alone the whole time too. Like 7 year olds. Constantly in the way and stealing Alex's extra footbags. At one point the one wouldn't give back the bag unless we guessed her name...

Oh yeah also read some more old blog posts and found some more tricks I never knew that I hit. Haha. Like clipper-set double switch, slapping DLO BS and slapping egg BS? There were some other neat ones, but I don't remember now. Oh yeah also apparently I've hit 4 blurriests before. Totally thought 3 was my record.

Oh, top post. Here's a neat video where I hit tapping DLO > diving symp mirage repeat, blurriest > blurrier [repeat] (I think the only time I've done that?), nova > pixie whip BSOS, tapping whip > pdx mirage > atomic whip > pdx mirage [repeat] w/ a tapping DLO, etc

Was hoping top post painting would be one of your Inktober drawings. Those are so impressive.

Did you pull one of these?

Yeah, that's always funny when you read an old post or watch an old video and are surprised. Like, "I didn't know I hit that!"

Aww, thanks for the kind words, Ken. That means a lot :) Yeah, Inktober has been super fun. I'm behind a day, but excited to pump out a couple drawings tonight. Gonna do something fun! But yeah, just putting them on Facebook for now, so can't really link from here anyway.

Aww that's so nice too! Thank you Asmus! I can't believe we've only ever met once!! Almost a decade ago now! Yeah... need more people to geek over comics and stuff with. Can't get enough! Mike and I had a nice comic art chat after our session today. Good stuff!

20x20 sessions #11:
Nothing really noteable today, but I'd say that 2/3 of the runs were 40s. Maybe actually 3/4. But something I'm concerned about is that because of nagging injuries, mostly shin splints from that one stupid symp video I made recently, I've been avoiding most of my cooler tricks and I noticed today that I'm really starting to lose them. Like bedwetter was a huge challenge! I need some way to keep my tricks but without having to do them all the time because they hurt if I do them too much :( Yeah, anyway, not much to say. My only new trick was diving illusion BS. Also, I'm gonna start bolding new tricks/records because I noticed that sometimes I did and sometimes I didn't in past blog posts and in my search to find things I've forgotten about it's waaaay hard to catch everything if it isn't bolded, since I'm not reading through all the text...

That's about it. Gonna hunker down and draw a bunch shortly. Excited!
Oh, wait, I also hit 20 ducking butterflies as one of my 20s. Haha. That's probably my record. So gonna update the spreadsheet. Mike hit 40+ clippers (47?). Alex hit DATWs for the first time, which was silly since he's got double switch pretty dialed.

Oh yeah, wait, I was also telling Mike how I got the Battle Chasers video game yesterday. I kickstarted it, but opted for a physical copy which hasn't arrived yet, but the company was suuper cool and gave all physical backers a digital code so that they could still play on release day in case physical copies were late! This is significant because the game is based on a comic from, like, 2000. And the artist, Joe Madureira was the one who got me into comics and art in the first place! I saw an issue of Uncanny X-Men that he did and I was hooked! Uncanny X-Men #346:
Image
The game is very pretty, though the gameplay is a bit stale and the dialogue and writing is quite bad. Still absolutely worth it. I will buy anything that Joe Madureira does.

Nearly there to 20 x 20/20. That's a really good challenge. Which I actually still have not succeeded on doing. I do find that in trying to get the higher numbers you often bring down the difficulty in order to get the longer runs. Or then you try the more difficult stuff, and drop it.

at one point I totally ripped off Battle Chasers when I would draw. The little girl with the huge magic glove was awesome! I was also a huge Chris Bachalo fan

Yeah, definitely drop difficulty and fun for the 20x20.. which is why I'm getting bored of it and also probably losing my tricks. Difficult to tell how to continue approaching it. We'll see...

Oh, rad, yeah, I think everybody tried copying Joe Mad's style at that point. I definitely did too! I'm also a huge Bachalo fan. Actually my favourite shelf of my comic collection is mostly the Cliffhanger crew (Madureira, Bachalo, Ramos, and Campbell). Not as big a fan of Ramos, and it looks like Campbell just does covers these days, but I try to collect everything Bachalo (he's so prolific!) and definitely everything interiors-wise by Madureira!

Fun fact, Chris Bachalo is originally from a small town outside of my hometown, Winnipeg!

Just hit 350 new tricks for my 35th birthday.
You can see them all by filtering on today's date in the New Tricks column of my trick list, and multiplying by 2 for both sides:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0

EDIT: My brother just told me that he had planned to finish that footbag video he filmed of me a few months back for my birthday. He's behind schedule, but he said that it's the next thing he's going to work on. Can't wait!!

How about a 20 tripless (unique) for one of your 20s?

Tripless is so booorrring :p
Maybe I'll give it a go though since it's something I've never tried. I think the biggest challenge would be remembering the tricks midstring. But it would basically just look something like:

diving butt > gyro butt REPEAT >
ducking butt > sidewalk REPEAT >
blur > dimwalk REPEAT >
ducking pdx mirage > symp whip REPEAT >
ripwalk > spinning butt REPEAT

Oh, totally forgot about the tripless. But today's session was a write-off. Crazy rain storm. Like WALLS of water moving horizontally at between 15-100 kmph apparently. Also what really threw me was unsupportive underwear that caused me to slip out midstring most runs. So I just gave up on runs at one point. Really frustrating -____- Which sucks too because it was the first session with Adam back and it was motivating to have someone better than me in the circle. Really wanted to play well, but I just didn't end up even putting in much effort because of the support issue

Anyway, did hit some neat new tricks though stepping whipping swirl both sides (good side was first try -- I've maybe hit that side before) and flux both sides, which Adam said were really deep.

Oh yeah also Ive been hitting ATW-out BS every single day since.. let’s say Oct 1, though I think a bit longer. Going to do that for... as long as I can. Baaasically playing footbag every single day 😂😎

Today's new trick was blazing near pickup BS.
We played with this double-sized show bag from Ivan. Super awesome bag, but not great for tight tricks. Wanted to hit pixie whipping swirl but the bag was just too big for something like that. Had a fun session. Getting cold and dark out though. We really have to figure out a winter spot!

16 new tricks today:
-diving jester
-ducking jester
-spinning jester
-gyro jester
-knee-set near osis
-knee-set far osis
-calf-set near osis
-calf-set far osis

Was too cold to really do much, and was feeling off for the second half. First half I felt really good, shins felt good, tricks felt solid, though runs were short because I was doing less textbook stuff for me.

Also I think Im either at or close to playing for a year straight with only minor injuries! Feels good! Here’s to another year (plz)!

Awesome news about lack of injuries. Is there any difference from a jester to a flying clipper? Or just the same thing?

No difference — jester is flying clipper ☺️ I did all the same new tricks this session, but super jesters and ducks/dives for the knee and calf bump osii. Oh right I was gonna bold them, so:
Diving super jester
Ducking super jester
Spinning super jester
Gyro super jester
Knee ducking osis
Knee diving osis
Calf ducking osis
Calf diving osis

Did 20x20 for the first time in a while. Looks like 20x20 #12? Also, thanks for the well-wishes Asmus!

We’ve been struggling with finding an indoor winter spot. We’re suoer frustrated about it and it suuucks 😔. I hate it. Anyway back to candy and Stranger Things!

Kinda cool news. I contacted Chad Devlahovich to ask him if he was cool with my uploading his footbag videos online and he suggested a handful of other tapes of his that I didn't have that he wants uploaded also, incluuuuding an unreleased project of his called "Purpose"! Cooool. Those are on their way to me. Which reminded me that Eli also has an unreleased project, which I think was called "Eutopia". Eli gave me permission to upload his videos a while back, but I never asked about his more recent videos. Going to check in with him and see if he's cool with releasing Eutopia if he still has it!

Also good news that it sounds like Chad is playing after a 4-year hiatus from injury!
Super meaningful to me since he was the player that got me into footbag in the first place.

UPDATE: Eutopia was never finished and the Ryan and Ales short videos that Eli put out were chapters from it. I think I knew this. He did give me permission to upload his Vasek in South Africa video, which I think is some of the best Vasek footage out there. Stoked to give my DVD a rip when I get a chance. I may check in with Honza to see if he's cool with me just ripping the whole DVD, though Eli's section is by far the highlight of that DVD. Actually I'll be visiting Capetown probably next year, which I think is where that was filmed. I'll see if my gf is down with filming a video of me while we're there!

Eutopia!

Post by C-Fan »

Wow, that's all awesome news! Where is Chad these days? Very excited to hear he is healed up and playing again. On a related note, it also makes me happy to see you back and playing again too!

I remember feeling hyped for the Eutopia video back in 2004. If we do finally get to see it in 2018, that'd be amazing.

Tell me about Chad being your first favourite player.
Man, I could never pinpoint what I love about watching him play. He never had a really diverse trick vocabulary, but even just watching him do blurry whirls back to back... could watch that all day. I can't explain it!

No idea where he lives right now or how much he plays. Also, I think there's no hope for Eutopia, it sounds like those two clips is all that will ever come from it.
But thanks, I'm super happy to be playing too!

Interesting session today.
This was our first session testing out our indoor spot.
Alex was super late and I was super early, but I bided my time and did some window shopping. Bought a shuttlecock for each of us in Chinatown and ate some dim sum. (Mike has never had dim sum!) I still remember the time when I introduced Jorden Moir to his first dim sum experience. I don't think he was super adventurous.

Anyway, turns out this community centre is IDEAL! The staff is suuuper nice. EVERY single other community centre that we've tried either wants money or just won't even let us play in a corner of a room. This one turns out to be a non-profit community centre, so they're just trying to fill up space and help people out. Turns out we're free to play every Monday and Friday from 4-9! Huge window, more than enough. We have an entire stage to ourselves that isn't used by anyone. It's a wonderful hardwood surface -- my shinsplints felt non-existent on it! Just a multipurpose room full of high school kids doing homework, playing ping pong, and playing pool. Oh yeah, free ping pong and pool. Nice bathrooms for changing. Suuuper nice and supportive staff. my ooonlly complaint is that it's super hot. But in the big scheme of things, where we were super concerned and stressed over having a place to play at all, this is just the absolute most ideal situation in the world. The staff even came around to offer snacks! It's basically a youth free gym that they let us into because nobody ever uses the stage. It seems like we left a good first impression too. They were impressed with our skillzors and are happy to have us back regularly. Score! I can't express how happy that makes me and how much stress that alleviates.

Alex could only play like an hour, and I didn't know that until close to the end, but I was on a roll and couldve easily done my 20x20 if I had known in advance. I think I got to 12 pretty early on. But also just did some fun stuff. Oh, new trick! We both were trying clipper-set near double switches, and we were both surprised by how easy they felt in comparison to a previous session where we tried them. I think before this I'd only ever hit it once each side barefoot. And today I'm not sure if I even hit it... buuut, then I tried stepping, and I think it hit it first try? And then second try flipside!
New trick: stepping near double switch!
Felt like a solid new trick. And way easier than I expected!

Went for bubble tea after and was pouring sweat waiting in line. It suucks being a super sweaty person! Like I'm thankful that I'm not an overweight sweaty person, but pouring sweat in public places when everyone else is bundled up in winter coats and giving me weird looks is always so embarrassing :(

In other news I just bought Nintendo Wii to play Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2, and maybe Skyward Sword. I haven't had a Nintendo since NES (well, I have a 3DS). Excited to start that tonight. But also gonna finish up some post-game content in this game, Absolver that I beta-tested. It's suuuper pretty, AND super deep. It's basically a third-person fighting adventure game, where you choose a style of martial art, and then learn new moves by fighting enemies and other players in seamless online. By blocking or countering a new move by another player, you earn experience toward learning that new move. Then you have a move deck where you choreograph which moves that you've learned will transition into which other moves. It's super crazy intricate, and you have to learn to feint, and block, and dodge, and read your enemy's own move deck and predict what they will hit you with next. Also, it looks like a watercolour painting. So gorgeous! (Also, me playing through the short campaign -- I don't think I died to any boss!: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... FC3i-AWnPy)

And the IGN review, which is a little too harsh, I think:

Had a session with Adam and Alex on Monday. We were super self conscious about how loud we were on this new stage since Mondays are designated times for serious senior Chinese table tennis, and we were worried that we were maybe throwing their groove. I hope they don't complain or anything, but we also met the head honcho and he seemed cool with us and actually said something about how he thought we'd be louder since the table tennis is pretty loud... so that's probably good.

New trick was gyro symple swirl BS

Oh I did some pdx torques, I kinda wanna dial that trick more. Good side is okay, but flip is my bad hip, which really restricts how far I can whip that leg for pdx, but we'll see. I also did some vortexes BSOS. Drifters hurt that same hip, but vortex isn't bad for some reason... So wanna do more of that trick too. It's so hard to decide what I want to get good at because there are just too many tricks! But hopefully I can stay focused on these 2 things.

Oh, also been getting permission from a bunch of footbaggers to upload their footbag DVDs. Honza's cool, Red's cool. Honza actually suggested that I check in with Vasek about Feet on Fire, and while Honza and Eli immediately said yes, Vasek's answer was a bit cryptic. He said give him a week or two to think about it. I hope he says yes. I've only ever spoken to him like once or twice before because I was always too star-struck. Also found in some old emails that Eric Windsor wanted me to publish his DVD Natural Born Kickers yeears ago, but I must've forgotten. This is good news because I've totally lost his contact info. I think I just messaged him on Facebook before but it looks like he isn't currently on Facebook... Anyway, that's all good news, and I bought some DVD-ripping software, but I've been having some technical difficulties with a couple of discs that I'm trying to circumvent... Frustrating.
