Thanks for the DVD rips

Post by C-Fan »

That's awesome news on the indoor space being good and free. That's huge news for the winter time.

Also wanted to say thanks for uploading all the classic DVDs. Brings back lots of memories for sure. It's also so weird when you see yourself in the background of a string and think: "that skinny kid kinda looks like...whoa."

:D
Thanks Ken. It's worth it to me if at least one person is enjoying the videos!
I don't know why I gave away my VHS collection before converting it all. I was just holding onto it for so long without a means to convert and figured I never would, but I've now invested a bunch of money into software and hardware to convert VHS and DVD. Should have done this before.

I'm bored at work and decided to look up shin splints treatment.
Again, I don't know why I never did this before. My major Achilles injury has been manageable for the past long while, and I've been doing my physio for that every single day for probably half a year or more now. But the shins have really been holding me back for the past few months, footbag-wise. I just did some quick research and I'm really gonna crack down and get the following:

-dense foam roller (for shin and calf massage)
-compression sleeves (to wear while playing?)
-another ice pack so I can ice both legs at once
-a golf ball for sole massage (I must have one somewhere in my apartment -- I think for comparing size to footbags when I used to stitch)
-new insoles since the ones I wear every day are probably a year or more old

The nice thing about wanting to focus on pdx torques and vortexes is that they're light on the shins and also on pounding the stage, so that may help also!

I could play so much better without shin splints, I don't know why I've been just living with them for so long!
Will report back once I collect all of these things and try them out! 8)

Stepping double switch sounds like a cool trick, I don't think I've hit that before, might have to try it in the coming weeks. I have started watching a couple of the videos you've put up but will need some time to set aside and give a few a good watch.

gyro symple swirl sounds cool too, I've been doing a few different spinning and gyro swirl tricks lately. Always feels great when they come off.

Yeah, symple swirl tricks feel so rad. Maybe extra rad because I'm so bad at swirls. Hahaha.
Speaking of which, though, today's new tricks were:
-pixie near symple swirl BS
-pixie far symple swirl BS
-stepping far symple swirl BS

I may have hit 1 or 2 of these before, but definitely not all of them... I don't think...
Oh, also, having added those to my spreadsheet, it looks like I've hit 626 new tricks since I started tracking my tricks. Not too shabby! That's give or take a few either way, since a few were just one side...

Oh, wait, toe set far motion may have been a new trick! Ocean? Mike whipped out the footbag app and we tried some combos. We do tiltless combos at his level and then Alex adds a level of difficulty and I have to add 2 levels. So it was something like near legover > far osis? And I did diving legover > ocean both sides, first try I think. Discovered that toe-set motion is way easier!!!

Here's some Dylan Fry. 'Cause Stylon'.

I did 20x20 for the first time in a while. It's a good fallback goal for if my body is feeling too broken to do anything cool, which my shins have put me into the category of! Good news, though, my foam roller, compression sleeves, and golf balls (I got Spongebob golf balls because they were the cheapest on Amazon!) should arrive in the mail tomorrow! Also I've been double-icing my shins every day so far (by which I mean both shins at once because I got a second ice pack). But I'm most stoked for the roller. Can't wait to get deep in on those shins!

Some okay highlights:
-gyro DLO and mobius both BSOS
-double spinning clipper BSOS

Played a game of pool after, which was fun. Our indoor spot is amazing.
Also an elderly Chinese ping ponger gave me props a few times on long runs (always 40+ contact runs I think?) It felt nice that they could appreciate what we're doing and that we're not a total distraction to their serious table tennising!

New tricks (which may or may not be actually new, but new to the list at least, and probably near was new) :
-knee-set symp mirage, far
-knee-set symp mirage, near

EDIT: Oh something else notable that I worked on this session was trying to get more practice in on gyro diving osis and butterfly. I do spinning ducking clipper so much, but rarely gyro diving and NEVER the butterflies and osii. So I did some runs where I BSOSed like all of the butterflies and osii, and just made sure I did at least the 4 of each BSOS. Felt good and should be good practice for if I'm ever able to train fearless combos (since those will be my bread and butter fearless tricks). Wanna work those more, and they're low impact and not too hard for me :)

I like to do pixie ducking knee bump mirage, or even symp mirage or ducking mirage which is something to go on with from those tricks, a bit of fun and variety.

I've seen Adam Keith do stepping knee bump stuff, even knee bump ducking. There's probably video of that on my hard drive, so I'll post it if I ever find it.

Good to see that you know the correct plural form of osis ;)

Thanks guys.
I've done lots of knee-bumping before too. I have a knee-bump session video from probably over a decade ago... but it's somewhere on Footbag.org and the videos on .org have been down for years... Allan assured me at one point that they're not lost, but... He also said they'd be back up momentarily on a few different occasions. I don't feel like bugging him about it because he's always super busy and too nice! Probably about 1/8-1/4 of the 350 new tricks I hit for my birthday were knee-bump-set  I did ducking and spinning and other things

20x20 #14:
New trick today was calf-bump-set near symp mirage, and calf-bump-set far symp mirage
Hmm... That's about it

Back was really raw today. Took some back meds and then put on the back brace halfway through the session. Did some GREAT stretches right after though that helped a TON. Leg cross-over and twist stretch. Gonna do more of that so I can play Friday. Was almost a bad idea to push the last 20s, but I did it.

Played mostly lightly. Only real highlight I remember was double spinning clipper BSOS? Oh yeah and Ocean BSOS a handful of times.

Also got Chad's VHS and DVD in the mail today. Stoked to rip some of them on the weekend! 8)

New tricks:
blazing near toe stall
blazing far toe stall
blazing near inside stall
blazing far inside stall

All 20 runs today were legit. One was 60 and pretty dense. I think I opened that one with blurriest > ducking pickup BSOS? Forget what else in that one.
-spinning ducking clipper > spinning whip BSOS
-mobiuses BSOS
-blurry reaper first try
-gyro whip > spinning whip BSOS I think?
-just dropped spinning whip > gyro DLO BSOS

New trick felt solid: Spinning merkon
Didn't quite get flip, but overdexed it a few times. That'll be my new trick for next session. (Well, actually, I think the one I hit was bad side... I'm unsure -- my bad double spinning anyway, and my weaker merkon...)

Missed the last 3-ish sessions because of crippling back pain, but spent the last 2 nights doing 1+ hours of back stretches and was able to play pretty well today. Gonna keep that up and hopefully be back to normal soon. Also tried compression sleeves for my shins for the first time. Hard to tell if they helped at all. No shin pain, but I'm not sure if they're tight enough on my shins... especially since my calves are so big.

Mike and Alex both played very well today too!
Mike hit gyro clipper BSOS for the first time and also pandora BS for the first time. His spinning looks very good. Alex hit legeater BSOS for the second time ever. A few times actually. And he beat his double switch record with 5. Oh, Mike hit 60 clippers.

Video conversion
VHS and DVD conversion is going well.
Well, WAS going well and then my laptop died. Like JUST after its 1-year warranty... So I'm typing this on my 5.5 year-old lappy that is apparently way more reliable than a year-old MSI gaming laptop. Very disappointed. Will not be buying another of those again! I'm anticipating this to cost me close to the cost of a new laptop... probably $500+ USD (lappy was about $1200 CAD). What a pain in the ass.

So conversion's on hold.
Unfortunately Bringing Out The Shred won't happen because of copyright issues. At least not now anyway. Also I got the go-ahead for Feet On Fire from Honza and Eli, but Honza wanted me to check in with Vasek first and he doesn't want it online unfortunately. He said maybe in future years... Really too bad about those 2. Waiting to hear back from Fred Touzelet about Sick 03, Buda's Best, and this other French tricks video I have. And then some others I was having some technical difficulties with, like Red's Fourkast, Honza's Champion's League, etc -- gonna have to do these a really old fashioned work-around way that's gonna be a pain. And then some others I just haven't gotten to yet.

EDIT: Oh yeah ended the session on food BSOS and spender same run. Oh and did some pdx blenders BSOS at some point.

MSI sucks...

Post by C-Fan »

First off, thank you for all your work on the conversions. Nice to know that so many classic videos aren't going to just decay and die on tape, and that history can live on for future players. Even if they may laugh at the skill level we once considered "video worthy."

Sorry to hear about the laptop. I've had bad experiences with gaming laptops dying suddenly too. I currently have an MSI, and I haven't been impressed with its durability either.

Props on spinning merkon. For some reason I find it feels cooler than a lot of other double spinning tricks that you would think are the exact same difficulty.

Ahh, nice!
And thanks for the props :)
Also, I'm actually really impressed with the level of some of these players from back in the day. A lot of it really holds up, in my opinion! I could seriously watch Chad all day. Who really blows me away is.. was it Tim Kelly? Stickman? He was busting BSOS flurries back in the early 90s. Bonkers. And such smooth style too!

So actually... so much drama around the laptop now!
I sent it in and they emailed me asking if it was okay to wipe it clean to see if that fixed the problem. I was, like, "Uugggh, if you must!" But really disappointed because I've now lost a lot of stuff. Nothing TOO important hopefully. But then I got emails with tracking info which told me that it was delivered on Weds. I never got anything, and also no info or communication from MSI. I finally heard back today that they waived all fees because it was an easy fix. Cool! BUT, the tracking said that it was delivered Weds. And I never received anything. I checked in with Purolator who has on record that it was signed for by a "supervisor". My building has no supervisor. So I'm 99% sure that some random person signed for my laptop and stole it. There were actually a lot of reports of this happening to others in my neighbourhood in our neighbourhood FB groups. Jesus. But then... thank fuck that they wiped my machine! It would've had all of my banking info, passwords, EVERYTHING. So that's a positive. PLUS... because this is entirely Purolator's fault for leaving it with a random person that was clearly not in my home (and my building very clearly not having a concierge or anything), they will HAVE to buy me a new one... one that isn't already teetering on death's door. So... a lot of negatives and positives too on that front... I'm thankful for this old backup laptop! And that I didn't just give it away. Man, what a pain.

20x20 session #18:
I missed the last 2 sessions because of life things. GF's birthday and then my brother visiting from Minneapolis for a few days. Back has been okay, but not great. Pushed it too much today for sure. Gonna be feeling this tomorrow. I hope I can play Monday.

Today Maciej came out for the first time. He just moved back here from Poland (he's back and forth like every half year or so because his mom lives here.) We were all pushing a little harder than usual to impress him. Hahaha. He hit pdx double blender. And lots of other nuts stuff as usual. Blazing barfly BSOS? super deep barfly swirls. Symp whirling ripsteins, whirring swirls BSOS... You know, regular Polish fare. Oh yeah, but then I footed a solid go at blazing barfly first try when my turn came around. Felt deep. Don't think I've hit that before? Unsure... Maybe I have. Oh yeah he also did the pigbeater drill first try after I tried to hit just one

We played for like 2-2.5 hours??
Mike and Alex both hit some really solid stuff.
One of my 20s (actually a 40) started with stepping whip > far butterfly x10, which felt nice since flip isn't suuuper solid. Biggest highlight was getting that flip spinning merkon! I guess it actually only took one more session of actually trying after hitting on the other side, but since I haven't played in a while it felt like forever! And actually it was extra rad hitting it because I was trying it, like, 3-5 attempts each turn for 5-10 turns, footing it 95% of the time. And then our FAT theme song came on, and we all got pumped, and I called it and said, "Alright, first try!" And bam! Felt so good :) I also have to hit wrecking pickup at some point, since I've only hit that one on one side... but I don't remember which side! Oh it might be in a video though...

Anyway. That was a long one.
Can't wait to see Star Wars tomorrow!
Oh and I scored Zelda Twilight Princess today at a game shop for $13! Normally it's like $60 everywhere else!

Our official theme song (we usually play this on repeat at least a few times every session!) -- the first track:
Oh yeah, also hit atom smasher x10 > (flip) backside rev reactor in this one 8) At about the 5-minute mark?

Had a 100-contact run > rev whirlygig > hand catch
4x jesters in a row, felt so solid 😂
Ducking PS mirage > paradon repeat
I think I had other stuff I was happy with but cant remember... Maciej hit dohble blender x2, footed bedwetter > pixie paradon swirl BSOS, sunil + jani both BSOS, almost bed > pig > smog > pig > pixie whirl [repeat]... other stuff

Hi TJ, yeah I think I could do that combo. I've done the BSOS before but I guess never thought to combo it?

New Years Jam was really fun.
Whirlyball was like one of the funnest things I've ever done. I was grinning like an idiot for the whole 3 hours, even though I only scored a handful of times. Sooo much fun. So much hospitality at this event: free whirlyball, open bar, pizza and wings; huge sleeping and shredding space at Adam's house; dinner prepared and paid for by Sean and i think Adam's wife (I tried to chip in a bit); and Ryan treated Christian and me to The Last Jedi and also drove me to the bus depot after the event was done.

It was nice to hang out with people and I had nice chats with a bunch. Had a nice long conversation with Nick about using footbag as an analogy for life; a long conversation about Hackrifice with Zach Jahner; a long discussion about comics with Steven Lanza's friend; talks about VHS and archival work with Zach and Tom K (Zach gave me 4 more tapes that I don't think I've copied yet); and a nice chat with Ryan also on the way to the bus about art and comics.

I played okay. I think the footbag highlight was that I was able to play 2 days in a row pretty hard and felt fine during and after! I was only planning to play for one day. I mostly played well but got frustrated with the carpet that they put down since it was too grippy for my Climas and I had trouble spinning and just doing tricks in general. Let me see if I can recap some highlights:
-gyro diving clip > spinning ducking clip [repeat], and rev maelstrom BSOS
-big apple dropped BSOS first try
-blazing far whip BSOS
-stepping whip > rev whirlygig [repeat] to open my first run in a circle with Nick
-I guess other stuff that I can't remember, but solid runs (mostly playing safe and not doing too much new because of the carpet)

Hmm... I'm not sure what else. Nick is really, really good and it was awesome to watch him play. I filmed a very little bit so may try to put something quick together of him, Johnny Breakdown, and Adam Keith. I think I filmed for maybe 20-30 min on my phone? Would like to see some footage of me if there's any out there also. Oh, also, I put together a footbag goals list after talking with Nick. They aren't particularly lofty, but will give me some things to aim for now that I'm done 20x20x20:

-ULTIMATE GOAL: play until 50 (even if just BOPs)
-play until 40
-hit a beast
-hit 10 fearless
-hit ripped warrior 5 times each side for 10 sessions
-hit stepping same symp whip (10x)
-hit stepping same symp mirage (10x)
-hit pixie everything
-hit spinning mobius
_____-and alpine mobius
-hit flipside tricks:
_____-blazing drifter
_____-mobydick
_____-wrecking pickup
-get more consistent (quantify)
-fix injuries? (quantify)
_____-hip/achilles/back

EDIT: Oh yeah, first trick of the year was pdx blender in Adam’s kitchen in pants — right where Nick did his mobius in Tom’s NYJ video. Second try felt good since it’s not a trick Im any good at 😎

NIce to kick off the year with a trick that's not in your specialty - and in pants!

I think there's some good goals there. I imagine I will still be kicking at 50. 40 is coming up sooner than I'd like and I have no doubt that I will be kicking then.

I did my first 20x20 this week, that's my big goal for this year, to do 20x20x20. Pixie everything is another one, but it has been since we moved to Chile, and that was 6 years ago, so I haven't made much progress there.

Whirlyball sounds crazy and awesome. I would love to have a turn at it. I just googled if there is anywhere to do it in Australia, but it seems not.

HACKY
Last session was fun, but I felt super off my game. I think because I was just fooling around and didn't have the structure of 20x20 to give me longer runs. I think I'm just going to keep doing it most sessions! I had a few runs where I mixed things up a bit more with creativity, but I think I'd prefer more boring, consistent, longer runs than short creative runs, especially since at this point footbag is more about the workout than anything else for me. As much of a chore it was to get in the 20x20 every session, I miss it already.

I had some good gos at flip moby dick last session to end, though. Felt like Nick Polini. And then I started to try to reframe the trick in my head as opposed to just trying to physically push through it, which is another tip that Nick gave me. I started thinking about it more like a spinning dyno with a mirage dex in there as an afterthought. Will probably hit it today.

Oh, new trick last session was spinning calf bump > near dyno both sides. Technically, the new trick is just calf-bumping near dyno. This was the challenge that Anton gave me at NYJ. It was neat the way they did request -- Anton and Zach came up with combos for every player, based on what they were hitting the day before. I wasn't playing at the time so they didn't come up with one for me, sadly, but when I asked, this is what Anton gave me. Oh, I guess that's the first new trick of the year too! Kind of a weird one...

I did put in a lot of ripped warrior attempts this session, though. I think I will try to keep doing that, and also mobius, to really nail those tricks (and stepping ducking). I've always really wanted consistent stepping ducking.

Also, I just ordered a gym bag online. I've been toting my footbag gear around in a grocery bag for like a year and it's super dumb and silly. I kept putting it off because I wear a suit to work every day, and wanted to find a suit-friendly gym bag, and they were all expensive, and kinda ugly. And then I was just like, well if I'm throwing my suits in a grocery bag anyway, I may as well just get a gym bag and fold/roll my clothes carefully. It's got a separate shoe compartment too, which is perfect. I hope it will fit all of my stuff. Will be nice to have a dedicated footbag bag. May throw my camel pack in there too instead of using my hiking backback that's way too small for my gear.

VIDEO GAMES
I play a lot of video games, but most everything I've been playing lately I got bored of by like halfway through:
-Battle Chasers: I'm not really a fan of JRPGs to begin with, but was giving this a chance since I Kickstarted it, and it's really pretty and by my favourite comic artist, but I got to a point where grinding for exp was required to progress in the game. And I just don't have the time/patience for that. so I guess I will look up the cutscenes on YouTube and watch the rest of the story. Grinding is dumb. Why?

-Mario Galaxy 2: Actually this is is more like I just put it on hold, because Mario games are a blast. But it's also kind of a pain to re connect different consoles to my capture hardware, and I'm currently setup on PS3...

-Witcher 3: I really want to love this game, but I put it down about halfway and have yet to go back. Some day I'm sure I will, and I think this one gives a pretty good recap if you're absent for a while. Hopefully I can remember the controls though.

-Hellblade: Really wanted to love this game, but I'm not a fan of puzzle games, and the puzzles in this are infuriating. Also I didn't play with headphones like is recommended. may actually start this one over, even though I left off at about 2/3 of the way through.

-Pokemon Moon: Was super fun at first, but I'm about 1/4 of the way through and I'm kinda bored of the JRPGness of it. I thought for some reason that the latest Pokemon game would let you catch ALL of the pokemon to date (which is around 800?), but I looked it up and it's only like 300 you can catch. Eh. That alone kind of alleviated a lot of my interest in it.

-Cuphead: my lappy died at 51% through this one, and I loved it a ton, and my save game was even preserved through Steam once I got my computer working again, but I have yet to go back to it... Will probably pick this one up again at some point. It's really a blast! And I guess I crave that Dark Souls-level difficulty from my games...

Meanwhile I got my usual hankering for a Dark Souls fix and blew through a Demon's Souls playthrough, and 2/3 through a Dark Souls playthrough now. It's amazing how many times I can play these games and never get sick of them the way I do with other games. Oh yeah, also there's DLC for Nioh that I paid for but haven't played yet and don't really have a desire to... Also the new Surge DLC...
This is my gaming channel, though I don't do any commentary or live cam: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxpwyi ... /playlists

VIDEO CONVERSION
I got a handful of tapes from Zach Jahner at NYJ. Once I got back home, I realized I actually had half of them already. Ah well. Plus I have to recapture the ones that I lost on my lappy, even though I've already uploaded them. Need copies for if YouTube ever disappears or removes the audio or something whack. Oh, which reminds me Ken wanted me to upload Shred Alert to Vimeo also (as well as Feets of Fury, I think). Have to remind myself to do that. Because it messed with the sound on Feets of Fury he said?

Also, good news that I got the a-okay from Naranja from Japan to convert and upload Buda's best and Sick 03 (thanks to Max B for getting me in contact with Fred Touzelet to egt permission from him and Pierre first). Oh, reminds me actually Fred wanted me to check in with Daryl Genz too, and I never heard back from him. Okay, need to add these things to my todo list.

That was a long one :!:
Ryan: I look forward to your video!
Daniel: good luck on 20x20! Pixie everything was never really on my to-do list because illusions always hurt my knees, but I've started casually adding them again and they feel fine. Fearless has been on my list for probably over a decade though lol. Whirlyball was one of the best things I've ever done in my life. I looove it! I couldn't stop smiling for 3 hours straight! Thanks for reminding me to check if we have it in Toronto, though I didn't doubt we do, because we have everything. May try to fight for this to be at my firm's summer party 8) My managers want me to be on the social committee for that anyway!
EDIT: Wow! Whirlyball is like $30 per person per hour (assuming you have a full court of 10 players)! Yikes.
