I'm chilling watching Crocodile Dundee and i begin to wonder, what do australians think of this movie? so i'm asking, what do you think? Crocodile Dundee... Funny or Offensive... Are there acctually people like this, and is this a humorous take off on their life style? or is this an offensive movie that characterizes all australians as bush dwelling, beer swilling, "this is a knife" flashing outback nuts? i really don't care what north americans think of this, but all are free to coment.
on a side note, what about that Crocodlie Hunter guy Steve Irwin?

Well my opinion is that i don't mind them showing/doing what they do, but i do mind it when Americans assume that all Aussie's live in the bush and that we ride kangaroo's to work over the harbour bridge. Actually, it was the same type of thing when i moved to Australia from England, i constantly got asked stupid-ass questions like "What was your castle like??".
I don't watch the Simpsons and assume that American life is similar to it in any way shape or form (however true that may or may not be).
Basically, watch those shows/movies and enjoy them or whatever, but don't assume Aussie's are like that, cause they're not. Aussie's are more like Americans than most people think.

okay, but has it caused a problem? are you experiencing a back lash of tourists expecting there to be crocs every where, kangaroos stepping on your tulips, koala's eating your trash? i have met far too many people who have asked me what it's like to live in an igloo and travle on dog sled, how we keep the polar bears from eating our children, how often herds of moose cause trafic jams...

Well generally a tourist isn't stupid enough to be standing in the centre of Sydney amongst all the skyscrapers and what not and then ask "Where's all the kangaroo's at?". I only ever have had to deal with those stupid Australian stereotypes over the internet from people who have never been here.
Just thinking about people who believe Australia is really like that makes me laugh. Ignorance is funny

I didn't vote, because Crocodile Dundee is in it's own way, a funny piss-take on Outback Australia. It doesn't in any way represent the whole of Australia, but it is a taste of what you'd expect if you went up the the Northern Territory - even if it is spiked with a hint of Hollywood. Essentially it's just a play on the steriotype.

i dont really care too much about movies like Crocodile Dundee and such, cos really they are Australians taking the piss out of Australians anyway so its funny. There are probably the odd few bushmen who are a bit like that but its pretty rare i would think.
Steve Irwin is just funny and kinda dumb, alot of ppl in Australia just laugh at him and hes not really very popular over here i dont think, it seems to be an overseas phenomenon.
Australians tend to have a pretty good sense of humour all round, so i dont think theres many ppl who get offended by any of this kind of stuff (except maybe Doylie
) He is right tho, Aussies are alot like Americans, we all consume similar products, brands and stuff, watch similar TV etc. from what i understand.
I thought the Simpsons Australia episode was hilarious, with the exaggerated accents, riding in Kangaroos, using boomerangs instead of guns, that was all priceless
but maybe thats cos i know it doesnt happen...

In regards to Robin's comment about over doing accents, I think it's only in movies that are aimed at an outside audience. There are plenty of good Australian movies. My Favourites are:
