awesome...although...m4a youre quite right when you said it sounds like their either pukeing or drunk...their usually drunk when playing shows...unless thier total sellouts(jk)..i think having biases in this thread make a bit more amusing and to prompt some discussion/arguments....so you think it all sounds the same eh???what about the same damn trance beat over and over and over..........

I think most punk just has really boring bass lines, that's one of the reasons I hate it.

that goes with most nu rock/metal, too.

man all punk doesent have boring bass lines...for example if you want a damn good and mind blowing bass line that is very challenging to learn...maxwell murder by rancid on the lets go album if im not mistaken...and their are alot more examples of really good bass in punk...youve just got to find em!

Wow! You mean the songs within the same genre of music exhibit similar characteristics? An surprises has appears!

How surprising that punk songs sound alike, or that country music tunes sound the same, or how all them "trance beats" go unch unch unch unch. I would never expect such a phenomena!

See, that's why it's called a Genre:
"A category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, marked by a distinctive style, form, or content."

Every style of music has its intracacies. Of course its only natural that people cannot hear these intracacies if they don't listen to the music on a regular basis. My own Mom hated electronic music until I played CD after CD after CD, and she was forced to listen to a variety. She began to develop preferences between each track I played, and in time, she began to understand why I liked it so much.

Even punk: I used to detest punk music, until I had a girlfriend who listened to it all the time. Hearing Pennywise and Millencolin and Weezer, I started to pick out the sounds unique to each band and each song.

So come on. For sure, you're free to state your preference, but simply saying, "Music Style X is shitty" is just ignorant.

Dragonhack: I too am just showing a bias against punk, but in my mind (maybe not yours) I think it's somewhat of an educated opinion since I play guitar, and have tried playing punk stuff to try to tolerate the stuff. And yes qphox, I'm ignorant... because every punk song not only has the same characteristics, but they do actually sound the same. I would guess that the average punk song plays no more than 5 chords (excluding a ring-out outro or something like that). In my honest and humble opinion (excluding all of my biases) I think that punk is an exception to my "ignorance" towards pulling that card that you so sweetly said I pulled.

And no dragonhack, trance beats don't sound alike because trance is the most abstract of all the electronica genres. Before you start bashing on "techno" and "trance", do you know the difference between the two? many people just categorize all of electronica into techno, not knowing that techno, trance, etc. AREN'T the same type of music. Electronica is much broader than you think!

Stephen: I agree with the fact that most nu metal and stuff like that have the same bass lines.

I have played guitar for so long that I may have lost my ability to listen to music. I always single out the guitar part and that is mainly what I look for.

I single out each instrument and listen to them all individually... at the same time....

Mostly the rhythm section, though.

Same, if you download a Dimmu Borgir song (like Hybrid Stigmata; get it and see what I'm talking about) at first, to most people it would sound like a bunch of cluttered garbage. But with this song (and every other song, this one is just a good example) it's easy to pick out each instrument and make melodic and harmonic sense of it.

m4d i guess we have the exact same biases against eachothers music...we both think that eachothers music sounds the same due to the lack of experience with each others preferences....although you are partly right on the around 5 chord phenomonon with punk...alot of it has 3 chords as well...(ex.my friends punk band)

It's kind of like that racial unfamiliarity thing too.

I mean, it's funny to think this, but compared to my junior high, my high school had a large population of asian students. My junior high had like...2.

When I got to high school, I made friends with this guy named Alex, but the next day, I couldn't remember what he looked like because all the asian people looked the same to me. haha

In time, I grew more familiar, and began to differentiate between facial features and such.

How weird.

My view on music has changed lately. I used to be a little kid listening to Jesus Songs, then I heard metal and started listening to it, then got sick of that and started listening to punk...always hating rap and pop from the beginning. Now...I just listen to whatever I feel like at the time. That range goes from classical to pop to hip hop and rap to hardcore metal and punk to techno. Geez...even since I moved down to the South, in a hispanic dominated area...I think...I listen to their music! Still don't really listen to country though. :p
