prizemoney events?

Post by max »

are you all kicking for the possibilty to earn money with this sport? to become a "real" pro
isnt it more like meeting cool people and having fun?
anyway i dont like the idea of pricemoney events. how could such a (so far) small sport afford 10k pricemoney? isnt there a better way to spend some money? like for promoting the sport or stuff like that.
this is the best sports ever, so lets tell all the people about it...
yeah Dan, You're right about that.
First, I thik that Vasek has just about demolished anyone's intentions if they were to win comps/money with footbag. Hey If I was footbagging for competition results, I'd have stopped when I first say Vasek play.. but I'm still kicking, because I like it.
As for the financial side of things, again i think you are tight, instead of handing out little sums of money to top players, why not spend the total sum in helping to organise the next comp? (and I'm NOT saying that because I have no chance of being on the podium and actually getting that money :)) )...
Finally you're right again, competing is fun and all, but I go to Europeen championships for meeting the hundred or so shredders and just partying with them for most of the week, oh and to shred a little too :)

I think prize money should be offered to cover travel costs, but excessive prizes could make some people forget why they took up the sport.

1) money put into promotion will just lead to bigger prizemoney events in the future. think skateboarding.

2) money is given to them by sponsors. they can't just save it for whenever and whatever they want, they are sponsoring the event in progress.

I think that a little prize money is good but it shouldn't been so much that you are playing just for the money. Basically if you win you get a little something if not, oh well.

i agree with Jonathan, except that i don't think footbag could ever possibly reach a level where people just play for the money. that right is reserved for sports like baseball. even when alternative sports become popular (ie "extreme" sports), i can't think of any where people started doing it for the money. they're just not profitable. no alternative sport is, and probably never will be.

yeah, the thing is, having prize money might make people want to get good, so they can have a chance at going pro and actually doing something with it. I mean, of course they're still goign to have to love the sport to do it bcause it takes so much dedication, but if people know there's something tangible that they can get for being good, it'd push them harder. If you didn't win money for winning skateboarding competitions, then I bet a lot of people wouldn't skate, and it definitely wouldn't be where it is, beacuse people couldn't do it enough due to the fact that they need something to live off of if they're going to be spending tons of time progressing and practicing. If there were enough competitions where yuo could win money, then more players could spend more time playing instead of time that they would need to spend working some job to make enough money to get by, adn therefor speed the progression of the sport. Having people who aren't true to the spirit of the sport, and truly love it for what it is and not for the money is an inevitable byproduct of the progression and expansion of the sport we love. There's my opinion on the issue.

i suppose that could be true, but i'd say the majority of people who skate don't get much money from it. and even if it is an incentive to work harder, that's good. it will get more people interested in the sport, and 99.9% of those people who joined for the money won't end up winning any money anyway. sucks for them, but they're giving footbag free promotion.

Yeah that's pretty much exactly what i meant when i was talking about it making more people play...it's just like publicity the more people that start playing. The other part is that the people who are really progressing the sport and whatnot are goign to be prtty much the best skaters or in this case footbaggers in the world, so these would probably also be the people winning the championships and money that they need to be able to spend tons and tons of time playing.

youre saying that the pricemoney for a handfull of "pros" would increase the popularity more than this money put into pr? do you really want footbag become the mainstream sports (like it happened to skatboarding/ goods and bads)?

what makes you go out for shredding 3 or 4 hours a day?there is no money you can win. but you do it, dont you?do you really want that feeling to be gone?

for me tournies are exactly what max said. im going there to meet all these nice poeple for shredding, for learning some new stuff, for patrying, for a good and FRIENDLY competition.

again some of my cents
dont want to offend anyone!ok! :D

for some kind of reason this sounds all quite similar to the "selfservingdebate".

I think just winning (coming out first in a comp) is more motivation than winning 150$. Then again that's just me. I can easily see how opinions would differ.

On a related topic, do any of you kick with a a hat on the floor or sometyhing for the public to put coins in?
My friends and I have not tried that but seeing as we can (sometimes) attract 50+ people crowds (depends on location, time, weather, level of play and other thingsof course) maybe it's doable. what are your thoughts on this way of making some change?

No there isn't much to lose, but the only way I see such a thing working is:
1) make sure you and your friends have a routine ready
2) get people's attention (with loud music for example)
3) do routine
4) ask for a little financial retribution
5) go find a nother place to do the routine again 30 mins later

I think you have to be very good (read:open category) and do VERY long runs just shredding if you want people to drop a few coins when you just shred with friends.

I prefer just shredding, self serve a couple of times trying that very_hard_move_I_m_trying_to_land a couple of times and just shred with little regards to drops. But that won't be very cash-rewarding :)

That's a pretty good idea...you could probably throw in a few of those "keep self serving until you hit that huge trick" type things in there just so people can see something that really blows them away and makes them want to drop some change. Then again, since people unfamiliar with the sport don't really understand what's going on most of the time, you could probably do like ridicuously long tiltless runs that would still amaze people, and then just throw in whatever 3s 4s and maybe 5s that you have really really solid, because I think that long runs without dropping will amaze people more than trying to shred guiltless and dropping it like every 7-8 moves or something.

Yeah i can't agree more with you on tyhat one. Just going tiltless for 45 seconds seems amazing to most bystanders... then again this is were I can see some debating, it's just boring.
Do any people on this list ever do such 'public shows' for money?

Oh and I think I should have added a third option to the poll:
- not yet

no money neednt to be bad for the sports. but there is a danger that i CAN be bad. weve seen both ways in other sports (ie: skateboarding, freeclimbing). all i wanted is, that all of us footbaggers allways remember this fact. and never forget why we all spend so much time in this sports. till now it is just the fun of it (meeting poeple, busting more huge tricks, and longer runs, and simply enjoying the time kicking...), and not the money one could possibly earn.

if we do this, there is no need to be anxious about footbag becoming a soldout "just the money counts" mainstream sport.
we all are in some way addicted to this small bags and are not doing it because everybody does.
