Space City Freestyle Jam 2004!

The Space City Jam 2004 is coming up, May 1st and 2nd. I believe this is the first time something like this has been done in Texas- splitting up the net and freestyle tournaments. [The net tournament will be some time in June.]

It’ll be in the middle of Houston's biggest annual festival, [the Westheimer Street Festival] with 30k - 50k people expected to show up. It's going to be a fun, relaxed tournament, designed mostly around just hangin out, shredding, and having a good time at the festival. Everyone is welcome.

It’s IFPA-sanctioned, so I’m doing something right.

Post if you would like to attend or if you have comments. I might also be open to suggestions. The freestyle routines are going to be one minute instead of two. What do you think about that? I decided that because there are a lot of people who wouldn’t mind dropping the freestyle routines all-together [as I understand, they didn’t exist at CSS] and it would help make the tournament overall a little more relaxed. It would move the competition part out of the way quicker to make time for shred and whatever else people wanna do..

Thank you for bringing that to my attention, James.
In the past, with all the tournaments that I've been to, there has been a flat fee, +a fee for each event entered.. But all those tournaments were running net, freestyle, and golf events. There will be 4 competitions at Space City, but they're all freestyle, and you're right- it is kind of expensive. The way I had it, if you registered for open in all the events, you'd be required to pay $35. [$20 initial, +5 each for shred:30, 1-minute routine, and sick3/sick trick] Yea the extra cash would have been allocated for prize money, but that's what sponsors are for. I've changed the registration cost to a flat fee of $25 for open and $15 for intermediate. I want to encourage everyone to participate in all of the events.

You like tournaments for the exact same reasons I do [and probably most other people]. That's why I'm really aiming for it to be fun and relaxed. This will be the first event that I've organized, so bear with me. It still promises to be a kick-ass tournament.

hey fellas,
juan and i will be there for sure. can't wait to shred it up with all the Texas shredders! i never truly concern myself with competition, though. i mainly want to circle shred, and hang out, but if i have enough money i will join as many competitions as i can. $35 though, ouch. i am just a poor college student as well. do we get a shirt or a bag?

I really want to be there, bur i have the SAT in the morning of the 1st. So if I come it will be somewhat late on saturday.

Andrew??!?! Why not? Can you not get a ride to Houston after your SAT's ? What's the deal, man? If you truly cannot make it, then you will be greatly missed.

I am taking about a two week break to let my knees heal up completely (hopefully) so I can be in better shape for the tourney.

By the way, anyone who wants to is welcome to stay at my house. I live about 30 minutes south of downtown, but I will be able to drive anyone who stays with me to the shred location. PM or AIM message me if you need a place to stay. AIM : JimmyJamesie

I'll be there fo shizza. And big props to Stoke for organizing this. I always say we need more Texas jams, but do I lift a finger to help organize anything? No. Thanks Mike. I'm looking forward to some epic shred.

I would like to donate to the cause but don't really care to compete. So can I just donate for a t-shirt or something?

Edit: What is the venue like? Are we shredding on grass, cement, what? Are there plenty of places to buy water, food, etc? Is there going to be some shaded areas to cool down? Will we have the ability to play music?

Thanks, Curtis. I will accept donations.. And yea you can just buy a t-shirt if you don't want to compete. Just contact me and let me know. [I'll email ya.] I'm going to get Steve Goldberg to set up online registration soon, which will also let you donate or just buy a t-shirt. But I encourage you to compete if you are physically able. [Not just you, Curtis.] Dallas has a broken leg, Joe has a broken collar bone, Mary has torn cartilege in her knee, and Shorty has... an abused body. So I don't expect them to compete, but I look on the bright side- we have no shortage of judges.

Think of a crowded festival with lots of people and lots of vendors. There will be live bands, a rock wall, a wet t-shirt contest, drinking in the street, and some really interesting people- great people-watching. It will turn more into a gigantic neighborhood party as the hour gets later.
There will not be much grass at the WestFest. You can kick on the asphalt street, but we'll have rubber pads [courtesy of JimmyJames], astro-turf mats, and a wooden stage to shred on. Well there might not be a lot of room on the street, and I don't even know if its going to be closed off yet. Either way, our area is going to have to be roped off or barricaded. I'll let you know more details when I know more. But there will be plenty of water and food available. [Hopefully I can provide some.] There will also be plenty of shade. I think there will be one of those mist sprayers to cool the area and it will be fairly close to us. It might not even be that hot. And what kind of tournament director do you think I'd be if we couldn't have music?

I don't wanna steal his thunder, but Windsen is working on a video documentary about footbag for a film class he's in [he goes to Rice] and he's going to put footage from the tournament in it and then wrap it up. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product.

If Curtis goes ahead with that party as planned, then I'll have to invite myself as well.

No I haven't gotten a lot of confirmations.. The Dallas guys are kinda unresponsive. The only person from Austin whom I know for sure is coming is James Geraci. Tina Lewis might come. I think the whole crew from San Antonio is coming- Mike, Juan, and Jose.
I have been contacted by a few people in the Houston area whom I've never met, telling me they're coming, so we should see a lot of new faces.
I updated the event listing with new contacts, schedule, and sponsor recognition. It should have online registration set up very soon. I've been working with Steve Goldberg..
I want to tell you guys that you should pre-register as soon as you can. Only the first 20 registered competitors will be guaranteed a t-shirt. If you register on Friday [April 30th] or later, you might not get one. I'll have extras, but they'll be first come, first served, and I don't know how fast they'll sell. We have a really good design.. If you don't want to register to compete, but you want to buy a t-shirt, they're $15. More details as they develop.

Online registration is set up. Online payment is disabled- You must pay in cash at check-in. But please pre-register as soon as you can, so I know how many people to expect, how many extra shirts to order, and what events you'll be competing in. Registration is easy. It took me about 10 seconds..
