I apologize for the double post, but for those who state they are atheist, do you truly know what that word means? Do you actively deny the existence of a god, or are you simply indifferent to the subject?

I call myself an athiest, and I guess I would say I deny the existence of God. However I would define an athiest as someone who does not believe in God.

My dictionary defines it like this
Athiest - noun one who denies or disbelieves the existence of God (or gods).

edit: the dictionary is The Macquarie Dictionary - revised third edition 2001

I'm agnostic, not atheist. But I voted for no affiliation.

I think though, that if you play around with words enough - you can convince most "athiests" to call themselves agnostic.

agnostic - noun - one who holds that the ultimate cause (God) and the essential nature of things are unknown or unknowable or that human knowledge is limted to experience.

So basically an agnostic takes the view that you can't know if God exists or not. I do agree with this sentiment - but in my opinion it's the same as the question about trees falling in a forest etc. Due to the nature of the question you can't possible know if the tree makes a noise or not. But logic tells me that it does. Similarly I can't know if god exists or not - but I see as much evidence for the existence of God as I see for the existence of invisible pink unicorns - and hence I do not belive in God.

I really do NOT believe in god. I know what the word atheist means as opposed to an agnostic person, and I honestly believe that religion is a crock (not trying to be offensive, just my belief). If you want to know why, I'm willing to explain, I'll just refrain from doing so here, as some mods have already expressed their opinions as to this..

Not really.

Protestants are those Christian denominations that chose to reform the Catholic church. They are the decendents of Calvin, Luther, etc. There are plenty of varieties of Christianity that did not derive their beliefs from Catholicism. They instead began with entirely different principles. The Bible Belt here in the United States is made up of denominations that really have very little resemblance to Catholicism. That is getting anal-retentive on the definition of Protestantism, but I think most people understand Protestanism as non-Catholic which is just not true.

You actually overlooked a few other religions. For example, Paganism, and Satanism.

To be honest, though, I don't really know where I fall into those catagories. I believe in the existance of all gods of all religions as, if someone believes it to be true, then for them, it is so. I just don't worship any of those gods, because I don't believe any of them are the true god. Therefore, I'm not bound by their rules and laws.
My beliefs probably tend more toward the Agnostic view, in that we will never know the true boundry of the ultimate creator. But it stems further than that.

If you're truely interested, PM me... But I'm not starting anything. It's just what I've come to believe is true - for me.

I think theres some sort of powerful force that is the reason we're here in the first place, but this force isn't exactly how any person or body of people have depicted it in the history of humanity.. I believe in something, but thats as far as my beliefs go.

Actually atheism dictates that you do believe there IS a god but you don't follow him.

But if you believe in God, you believe in the bible, and the bible says that if you don't follow God, you follow Satan. So if you believe in God and still choose not to follow him, you are now a Satanist, in God's welcoming eyes.
