ok - a number of people have been claiming different things about the bias of american media so I thought a poll was in order!

Obviously this is a generalised question - I'm sure some stations are more biased then others - so vote with generalisation in mind rather than thinking - yeah fox news is so left wing so I'll vote for biased towards the left.

I guess you'll have to use your own definitions of left and right!

Personally I haven't watched a great deal of american media - but I've watched a little bit of cnn, fox news, cbs and nbc. I would have to say that the media seems a lot more right wing than Australian media - but maybe our media is biased towards the left and american media is unbiased. I'll hold off voting for a while to hear some strong arguements either way.

If I were like HighDemonslayer (I may actually be him), I would rush back to the other thread, with the irrefutable evidence that as of this post, 100% of modified thinks there is a Right bias in the newsmedia.

It's not BIASed to the right, it's CONTROLLED by the right. Basically, whoever is in goverment control releases a set of media standards for things they are allowed to talk about, show, etc. I've seen the list, it's quite a long list, and a good read!

Fox is owned (well I don't know if owned is the right word - I'm not very good with buisness/economic jargon) by Rupert Murdoch who was born in Australia - but he now lives in America and is no longer an Australian citizen. His family mainly still lives in Australia though. News Corp is definitly seen in australia as more "right" than the public news and the Fairfax corporation. However I doubt that Rupert has a great deal of influence and I think American Fox is probably ran by a different person with different guidlines etc.

I guess this is what I deserve for saying:

"Most of the forum believes X about media".

"Media" is to general a term anyhow.

I would break media into 4 categories:

T.V. (broadcast and cable)
Radio
Internet
Newspapers

for what purpose? maybe something.

You know it's really hard to say.

Many of the top Newspapers and Magazines are biased toward the left (i.e. The New York Times, Washinton Post, Newsweek). NPR (National Public Radio) is also extremely leftist and they have sindication and sister stations all over the country.

Then you have to consider the major media conglomerates that are popping up these days.
Many of the TV stations are extremely Right. Consider that the Walt Disney Corporation owns, Miramax Films, ABC (American Broadcasting Corporation) and all it's subsidiaries. They account for about 4 main TV channels, WABC news radio, KABC news radio, and about a dozen other major radio stations in major cities others to boot. Walt Disney World and Disneyland are in Florida and California respectively. Both of those states are run by Republican Governers. Florida's Governor is the Presidents own brother.
So how does that make Disney a rightwing media conglomerate???
Jeb Bush insures that Disney gets extreme tax breaks from the state of Florida, Epcot Center (part of Disney World) was in financial trouble and was bailed out through an investment made by Prince Al-Walid bin Talal, a billionaire investor who is a grandson of Saudi Arabia's King Fahd (cha-ching OIL MONEY), Miramax also recently refused to release Michael Moore's new leftwing politically charged movie "Fahrenheit 911" on the say so of Disney CEO Michael Eisner.

So it just so happens that I know more about the Disney thing than I do about a lot of leftwing stuff because of recent events.

However, the left media is out there and is extremely powerful as well.

Much of the time the media supports a president anyway. Even if they lambaste him one day they kiss his ass the next. Look at the recent events with the prisoner beatings. Bush and Rumsfeld were being pounded and now they are being praised.

It's all for ratings.

Here's an interesting approx. one page article about the Pew research center's survey relating to journalists.

It seems there are more self described moderates and liberals. With more describing themselves liberal than before.

With FoxNews's success, and lots of internet porn, the far left no longer has a stranglehold on all the major media outlets.

The 5 o'clock ABC/CBS/NBC national news that people used to plan their meals around is now the boring shit that nobody watches.

To be fair, it is true that every cable news channel parades the same tired, old group of prostitutes, ehem..... pundits across the airwaves every night.
