More correctly...an Upstate New York American Accent.
Something really funny just hit me.
I was reading one of Jeremy's posts and I realized that the voice I had made up in my head for him, while different as an inner-voice, didn't reflect the fact that when I meet him at World's he'll be speaking with an Australian accent.
I tend to read posts without considering that aspect.
Anyone else superimpose their own accents like that.
Try superimposing a whole other accent than they will have. Like try and Irish Accent on Cod or a French Accent on Jeremy and a Spanish Accent on Max
I voted no. I think I generally assign the 'right' accent to the voices in my head (or a good approximation of what I think their accent should be). I don't know the regional differences between accents though, so everyone in Nothern America speaks with an American accent in my head.
Jeremy sounds like Steve Waugh (the cricket player) in my head, as do most Australians.

I think it's funny how people think they don't have an accent but really they do because everyone they're around has the same accent and when they hear someone different they consider them to have one. It's just as weird to them as it is to you. That probly didn't make any sense

yeah if i am playin xbox live i would say 3/4 of the kids on there are from the south the have the accent. I ask them if i sound weird to them and they say no, so i guess we sound like them but they dont sound like us wisconsinites. They also claim to be like 16 and they talk in a girly high pitched voice.

Everyone speaks with an accent as soon as they meet someone from a different region.
I mean the difference from Jersey to Brooklyn to Long Island to Woodstock is very noticeable to almost anyone from southern NewYork.
The further north you get the harder it is to tell. You can go from Poughkeepsie to Rochester to Lake Placid and not think anyone's accent is different, but as soon as you hop over the Canadian border everything changes again.

yeh Max definitely doesnt have a French accent at all, when he speaks English that is. its kind of a mix of Aussie, English and French, its very distinctive i think. cos he lived in all those countries for a few years each, correct Max?
i just put my own voice on to everyones posts when i read them, ive never conciously thought about it tho, very interesting thread Brad!

What is responsible for a person perceiving another to speak with an "accent?" That is to say, what is happening physiologically in one person, the person producing the sounds/words/sentences that is not happening in the listener or is happening differently in the listener?
or an even better question:
Why hasn't the human yet found the most efficient way to produce each of the sounds of his/ her language? (ex: Chan and I speak english but we might produce 'e' differently in the same word . . . but which of the two pronunciations is easier from a physiological standpoint? and why i the one who is producing the "harder" sound doing so rather than producing the "easier" sound? Will this ever change to maximize efficiency?)

Do I sound southern? I don't think so, but just putting it out there since I'm from WV. Most freestylers I've met don't have an accent (not naming any names for those that do )
