No it's not. Besides, we've already got more terms than we know what to do with.

Tor, the next Beesause?

Post by NotHisRealName »

Nate first mentioned 'theme oriented runs' in the Eugine Shred thread found HERE and I think it's a fitting term.

For example, we all know what a drill is. A super basic example is Mirage>Illusion>Legover>...>Repeat
And we all know that BSOS (Pronounced 'Beesause') stands for 'Both Sides, One String'. Meaning that a trick (or combination of tricks) were hit on both sides of the body, and within the one string.

Well, 'Tor' refers to a theme oriented run. I gave my examples in the Eugine Shred thread, but I'll give a few more.
Nates Ducking Tor in the footage. He hits a combination of ducking moves that, while not a drill, is not necessarily BSOS either.

I admit that the term is not groundbreaking in any way. It doesn't refer to much other than the style of shred, but it's definately a concept to consider, especially when training.
My reasoning stands with the fact that, while not everyone schools Drills, we still often just play on our own. Well, when schooling, we can work things like clipper Tor, Toe Tor, Ducking Tor, Spinning Tor... Things like that, just to help us school, without the boredom of restriction.
Besides, I'm sure most of us have hit Tor runs in the past (I know I have), and this is just a way to define them.

So I ask... Is 'Tor' just another useless term, destined to die a slow death, or can Nate be credited to something more than his awesome style and a dropless intermediate routine in 2003 at Funtastic which totally rocked my world when I saw it online?

Post your thoughts, or just vote. Either's good for me. 8)

I voted no for a number of reasons:

1.) The name just doesn't roll nicely off your tongue (Tor, tor, tor...). Whereas BSOS (or beesauce) has a nice ring too it.

2.) I'd rather see people describe there actual runs, than saying it was some tor run. i.e. instead of saying you hit a ducking tor, rather say you hit ducking > diving > zulu > spinning ducking > weaving > ducking. I think if it was worth mentioning it (or making a post about it (the run that is)) you might as well make the effort to say what moves was included in the run, as I am sure many people would like to know. It also prevents posts like "Hey dude, what moves were in that ducking tor of yours?"

3.) Continueing from reason (2.), I would say that it doesn't really give enough info, its rather vague if you will (for me anyways). Sure you know the run included alot of component <x>, but I think it would be better too just go ahead and give the whole run.

4.) In your usage, it might be mistaken for an actual trick. ie. toe tor may be confused for some trick tor, starting from toe. Sure when it gains in popularity and more people uses it, that will be less of an issue, but I don't think to many people will use it.

Obviously there are cases when it could make sense to use the term, but in those cases you could rather just say "I hit a run with alot of ducks and dives" or even "I hit a ducking theme orientated run".

i agree that "tor" doesnt sound terribly exciting to say. when i talk about what you call "tor" i just say, yeah derek had a sick spinning run. or andrew went eggbeater crazy. if tor had a more specific implication to HOW or WHEN or even WHICH moves were hit i might find more use of the term.

:D But no, it doesn't sound so nice. Try to come up with some better term, Gareth! It's a good idea and it would be a very useful term in my opinion. At least it's worth to try.

Useless.

Interesting idea since I enjoy runs with a certain theme, but giving some abreviated name for it is quite useless and sounds a bit silly, just as posted above. How bout this comparison.
" I love Mulroney's Eggbeater Tor "
or
" I love Mulroney's Eggbeater runs "
or
" I love Mulroney's eggbeater themed runs "

To add some word that most people won't understand would be quite useless in my mind.

Edit : I accidentily voted for it, now look who's silly

tor sounds like something a klingon would say when they want you to fight another enslaved human to the death.

hahaha,
Actualy ALL of my runs in that video WERE either bsos or drills...

I assume the run to witch you refer, the second was:
weaving clipper>zulu clipper>repeat>
spinning ss clipper>diving clipper>repeat>
spinning clipper>ducking clipper>repeat>
spinning clipper>spining ss clipper>
zulu clipper>repeat.
5 straight drills....

Watch my video again Kiser and you'll see that my/calebs term "theme oriented runs" was a joke because all I did in the vid was drills and bsos.
And thanks for mentioning my funtastik routine. anyone who wants to learn the slap air bass check it out:)
I think tor would only work well in the contex of, "I'm going to work my tors today," not in the contex of individual runs. And I think theme oriented runs sounds better too.

Slightly off topic but nonetheless funny...jeremy mirkens "tapping whirling swirl"...

TOR...he sure sounds and has an expression as a beast called TOR or something...

How about Drill oriented runs? DOR...

I hit Ducking DOR today...No, that doesn't work either.

If I had to say 'nice tor' everytime Nate did a ducking/spinning drill I would kill myself... j/k I do like the theme oriented runs thing, but I still would rather say soandso went on a sweet ducking string, or nice shuffle, or pixietasitic...

i like it in regards to simplifying what was in a run you just saw on a vid, etc. for example: his run was eggbeater tor, or it was very torque tor, etc.
