Knee Pain

Post by jhibbs »

Ok I'm sure everyone's had enough of injury threads so I'll keep it brief: I've had a persistent pain right below my patella for about a month now. It doesnt hurt when I walk, only when I bend past about 30 degrees (the worst when i try to use it as a support leg for clipper).
I have been off playing for about 3 weeks, I've tried ice, and I've been taking ibuprofen every day. I also started riding a bike as I heard it helps strengthen the quads and take stress off the knee, and I bought glucosamine/chondroitin today. Basically I've tried everything and if the vitamins and bike riding (bnoth of which I just started) dont help I might be off all summer. Any adivce? Stories? I'll probably see a doctor real soon but i doubt theyll reccomend anything other than what I've already said. Bah.

And all I wanted to do was shred this summer

go swimming every day!!!!
i swam a minimum (i think) of 2 hours for 4 days straight this past weekend. not only is it the best all around exercise but there is no impact involved. i felt my injured groin muscle working harder than usual, but it didnt hurt as much as walking. i think swimming must be one of the best activities ever!!! i actually researched information on rehabilitating my groin and found that after the first week or so (as prescribed by a medical textbook) jogging in chest-deep water and flutter-kick swimming are among the activities best suited for regaining the strength in my leg. i realize you have a different injury (im not sure i understand what part of you is injured though), but i thought i would share anyway!!! ive been doing a few spinning and ducking clippers a day lately, just because i CAN, and it feels sooooo good!!!!!!!

look up you injury on google, someone suggested that to me and i found some very helpful information!!!!

Jhibbs, is your pain directly in your knee joint, or is it actually slightly south of your patella. If the pain isn't so much in the joint, I don't think it'd be worth purchasing Glucosamine/chondroitin, since it can mostly help with lubrication in the knee joint, and certain pains within the joint. If you're having pain slightly below your patella, it could be something in your patella tendon, if that's the case, and since you're having an extended period of pain, just check with the doc about it.

First advice, go to the doctor.
I had a similar thing, but it got so I couldn't walk more than 50 metres without my knee collapsing.
I went to the doctor, he said rest for a few days, gave me some painkiller gel, and said it was osgood schlatters(sp?). Anyway, its now gone a few months later.
I'm 21 by the way, does anyone else think thats a bit old for osgood schlatters?

It very well could be tendonitis in your knee... I am going through a similar thing now. It is more commonly called jumpers knee. The key of course is to stay off it if you are feeling any pain. It is basically an inflamation of the tendons and it is caused by over stressing them. The recommended treatment that I have read is to ice for 7 minutes 5 times a day and stretch a few times a day. This keeps the tendons from getting stiff. As long as the pain is not in your joint and is slightly outside the joint, then you should be fine. Just rest and ice it a lot. You should notice that most of the pain goes away right after you ice. As soon as all the pain is gone for a few days, then start playing footbag again, but make sure you stretch that area a lot first and stop if it begins to hurt again.

I hope this helps, but I'm of course not a doctor :?

My knee problem was my right knee. when I would start to play for the day, warming up the clipper was harder the hell. It hurt! But after a little bit of kicking and stuff, the pain went away.

If you can play though it, try that. But by the sound of it, you can't... Take a long while off if you need to. But seeing a doctor, in my opinion, would be a prudent course of action. Then do what the doctor says...

Personally I would recommend not following this advice - you risk doing permenant damage and having a sore knee for the rest of your life. I would say go see a doctor and see what they say.

Playing on injuries is really, really, really stupid...

Yea I'm definitely not playing this one off.... I worry aboput the permanant damage.
Just to update, Ive been taking the glucosamine/chondroitin for two days now (not really expecting anyhting for at least a week) and icing as often as I ge tthe chance, swimming would be a great idea, someone else recomended it to me, our pool is nearly open too. I haven't been stretching though... I'll try that and see how it goes.

I use to get these little pains on the inside of my knee from trying P.S. whirl. I just stayed away from the move for a while and it got better.. My pains probably different, but i notice when i stray from the moves that make it hurt and work something else it generally gets better.. Sometimes when that doesn't work you just gotta take time off.

I think when it comes to the main joints of your legs (groin/hip, knee, ankles) you should be the most catious. Oh yea footbag can mess your back up too.. If you back starts hurting from playing you should probably stop till it gets better..

Hi everyone,

I think a pain in the back is mostly caused by too weak back muscles.
As most back pains are.

I wore thin elastic braces that I got at a CVS for my knee pains. I wore one for 2 years on my left and one year on my right. The pain is gone and I don't have to wear them anymore, but I know they helped heal them.

Thanks Evan!

I always wondered what Honza was wearing on his knee. I thought it was a bandana or something. Anyway, as soon as my tendinitis heals, I think I am going to play with one of those jumper's knee straps. Thanks for the info!

I know nothing about knee injurys and right now I have one.
most of the pain is right above my left knee.I cant do a left
clipper do to pain and I cant do a right clipper cause there is almost
no support on that side. its almost like i lost most of the strength
in that knee.I havent kicked for a week and I banged my knee into
a kitchen counter to top it off.I do plan on swimming alot if that will
do any good.

Any advice on how to heel fast would be awsome cause I'm really
looking forward to worlds thank you.

well to update and possibly help you out ricky,

I found that icing several times a day and stretching the area works quite well, just remember to do it every day and like 5-7 times a day. My left knee is fine and my right is almost there.

Shit ricky your knee is messed up now too!!! GAH!! Well to update you on my injury, I have been out for a month now and highly distressed that I won't be able to play again. It is finally getting better though, but I am trying to rehabilitate it by standing on one leg and doing squats. It seems to strengthen the knee, and I do some squats up and down stairs as well. I can finally do some butterflies again, but I don't dare throw a blurry whirl or anything crazy. I know your knee will get better, but don't play on it until it is fully better. I tried that a few times and messed it up even worse. Hopefully you won't be out as long as I have, because it gets fairly upsetting, but I am confident that I will make a full recovery, so hang in there! The human body is remarkable at healing itself... especially if you keep a positive attitude.

OK, well I'm pretty screwd right now. I went to the docter and I
most likely ripped a tenden. Or I could have damaged cartalage.
Its most likely I damaged a tenden though. I have to go see a surgen
and get an MRI. I'm out for at least two months though  and at
the most four to five months do to most likely surgery. I'm not going to be
able to kick at worlds. So I might not go because I dont know if I will
be able to stay sane watching all those people shred and not be able to.
Footbag is such a big part of my life I dont know what to do.

I'm sorry to hear that Ricky. I don't know what I'd do if that ever happened to me. And I was looking forward to seeing you shred at Worlds. I guess there is always next year, right?

Here's for a speedy recovery!
