First RFFC Intermediate Video

I've got a video we just finished editing... it's mostly intermediate stuff (the hardest moves are ducking dragonfly and smear) but I'd really appreciate if you guys took a look at it. Unfortunately I don't have any web space right now, so if you could IM me sometime and I could transfer it to you for you to host, I'd appreciate it a great bunch! "BigDirtyFoot" is my screen name. Thanks to Jim Jansen and Mike Hansen for hosting the video until I got my IFPA membership and was able to host it myself.

NOTE: The video *may* be in widescreen if you use Windows Media Player and/or Quicktime. It was for me and I was upset because I looked fatter than usual. Try using DivX or RealPlayer, that's the only way I can get it to view normally on my computer.

Oh yeah, and just so when you see it I've cleared up some things:

- The opening scene, my shirt is Calvin (from Calvin and Hobbes) pissing on a hacky sack logo, and it says "It's Called Footbag!" underneath. I made that shirt myself, because it never got printed from before... it was an idea being passed around the footbag community a few years back (I forgot by whom, I'm sorry).
- I don't hit many clippers in this video at ALL... I have bad trouble on them, and I was playing with some injuries that prevented me from doing them. Since then, I've gone back to basics and started schooling clippers a lot more and adding them into my runs. I'm still not satisfied with them, and they drive me crazy.
- The little guy's name is Luke "Birk" Hostetter. He was in a lot of shots but his top run length is 3 tiltless so I guess the editor didn't want to put him in... I'm not sure, I didn't edit it. He's a cool guy.
- The song is "Game Show" by Mad Caddies. I didn't pick it out but I approved of it, it's cool and energetic.

That's about it... I'd appreciate *any* helpful criticism that you could give me.

Hey BigDirtyFoot,

Nice Vid. I like your freestyle. Its a good flow of tricks, smooth from one trick to the next. The Ducking Dragonfly is SWEET! Good flyers are seldom seen in these parts, and thats a good flyer. The music and editing were pretty good too, though I'm not really a good critic of these things. As for the freestyle, it seems to me you're pretty comfortable with certain combos, like Around The World > Mirage > Legover, or something like that. I recommend getting comfortable doing similar combos but with the other foot (both sides, you've heard it before.) That goes for smear too. I've seen people master smear to a lever nothing short of perfection. I rarely see it mastered on the other foot, though. You can do this.

I'd appreciate *any* helpful criticism that you could give me.

Oh, so you wanted criticism. Well, I don't have much criticism for you. How about, um, I don't know, why not try washing your big dirty foot?

Here you go:
1- Both Sides!
2- Back away from the person playing or get a wide angle lens ($40-$140) Try to get a full body
3- Both Sides!
4- Doing tricks off of curbs & other elevated terrain is Cool!
5- Doing mirror tricks is cool
6- Both Sides!
7- Wide screen was a bad idea. Maintain aspect ratio. Wide is cool, just make sure the ratio is the same as the original.
8- BOTH SIDES! This beast is an easy one to tame at your level, START NOW!! It becomes an enourmous Bitch to deal with after a while. Make your flipside stronger than your strong side. Just do it.
9- Try to only show one trick once per video. Different strings are cool. But moves by themselves.
10- Both Sides!!

Good job on putting out a video. Keep it up

Both Sides, I know I know. Actually I've been working on those combos both sides recently, but they're still kinda rough. About the wide angle lens... It's not my camera, and I don't want to tell the guy to go buy another lens when I might not see him again after the summer, when I move away. Trials are fun too. I've been working other moves off of curbs... and also, I've been working on keeping a string going even after a trial. I don't remember what mirror tricks are. What do you mean "Try to only show one trick once per video" ? That wasn't clear to me, sorry. And finally, both sides

Thanks a lot for the props on the Ducking Dragonfly! I had a few people IM me and tell me it was cool as well, because apparently not many people do them. So that's pretty cool. I actually worked it out so I can get it on my flipside every once and a while too. Also, I'm working smear flipside but it's kicking my ass. And I also recently switched from playing with Mr. Sandmans for 2 years to a Mini Abshire... so, I'm also working my stalls. And I *do* wash my feet.

Nice job on the vid. Yeah, I'm gonna stress both sides just like everyone else. It's important.

Anyways, cool trials, cool doubles stuff too. Keep it up.

Haha, thanks for the reply Nate... Yeah, I liked the doubles thing. We did this other cool thing where Luke would set it up, do a mirage, then set it up and I would dex it and then stall it on my toe. That was always cool. Didn't make video though... guess it wasn't clean enough. Oh well. I'll try to expand on the trials... I doubt I'll be expanding on the doubles in the next video though.

Mirror tricks are tricks that if you were to show them in rewind, they would look the same (ie. ripwalk). But, he probably meant, mirror combos, which is a run where you do the same moves on both sides, like dimwalk (left toe) > pdx mirage (left clipper) > dimwalk (right toe)> pdx mirage (right clipper).

As far as try to only show one trick once per video, I believe he means instead of showing different runs that showcase smear as the big move, for example, just pick the best run with a smear in it, and put that in the video, and leave the rest of them out.

Okay, I thought those were "repeats" or something of the sort, and mirror combos would be like pdx. torque>mobius>mobius>pdx. torque. so its the first half in reverse = the second half.

Wrong.
You are describing Rewind moves, which are moves where if you rewound them could either be the same move done flipside (i.e. ripwalk and ripwalk) or two totally different moves (i.e. legbeater and blur). Doing the two moves in combination equals a rewind combo.
Mirror moves are exactly that,"Mirror's". So stand in front of a mirror and do a right toe set pixie butterfly. If you were the guy in the mirror you would be doing a left toe set pixie butterfly. So being able to Mirror your moves is really being able to do them flipsided.

As for feed back on your vid BDF.
I know the Both Sides thing is the biggest critique, but it's also the most important. The video contained about 10 tricks done over and over again. Toe stalls, ATW, Smear, Mirage, Pixie (both sides which is good), clipper, legover, and pixie dragonfly. If you hit those all both sided it would increase the viewability of the vid and you'd have 10 more unique tricks under your belt.
A suggestion I would make is to work on your rythm. Seriously, turn on some music that has a good beat and practice toe to toe... just the stalls, no tricks. Work on a rythm where you actually have to delay the bag on a downward catch. Many of your delays are caught where your foot is on the way up or it's already as far down as it can go. I'm saying to start your delay with your foot higher off the ground and bring it down as if you were catching a pop-fly bare handed. This excercise will give you a fluid toe to toe motion that will make it easier to work your toe to toe combos.

Does this read in somewhere, like in footbag.org? I mean where are Rewind combos and mirror combos defined?

If mirror combos are what Splint says, I can't find any use for them... You can just say that you hit something bsos or with flipside...
OR if you mean that mirror moves looks exaclty the same. Like, no-one could say wich one is flipside, then I could undestand it...

Actually you're not disagreeing with me unless you think my definitions are wrong.
What you ARE saying is that based on my definitions you find no reason for the term "Mirror" to exist... and I agree with you on that.
I believe "Mirror" is a misnomer for people thinking about "Rewind" and Flipside is definitely better than Mirror.
