Hey all,

Don't you hate it when you are trying to get that latest 40mb video, but your download is stuck at a blazing 3k/s? Well, there is something really easy that you can do to help make downloads go faster. When you post a video, you should post a direct link to the file, but prefix it with http://freecache.org. So, say Jorden wants to post this video: http://www.footbag.org/media/203/GHGpt1.wmv

http://freecache.org/http://www.footbag ... GHGpt1.wmv in his initial post.

In the worst case scenario, you will get the same speed you would have had anyway. However, if the file is cached on a mirror near you, your speeds will be much faster.

I'm going to try to get these links automatically added at footbag.org.

Maybe post the codec you used too, so I don't spend hours downloading a video over a slow server only to get the audio.

This is as good as any place to post this, I guess...

Let's talk about file names.

1. Do not put spaces in your file names.
2. Do not use special characters in your file names.
3. Be descriptive in your file names ("shred.wmv" is not descriptive whereas "AllanSummer2004.mpg" is)
4. Use case to separate words i.e. victoriaSummerShredBytheSea.mov

As well, while I'm ranting, using your IFPA account to host your non-IFPA friends videos is simply bad form.



(edit: oh and the .org server slowness should be resolved at some point over the coming months as I am donating a whack load of bandwidth to the cause and will be starting to act as an official mirror for the galleries )

Allan, has an implementation of bittorrent been considered for .ORG? I know that pretty often its a single file being swamped that murders the bandwidth - ideal for torrents. I don't know how difficult it would be, but some file distribution sites have started using it (ie: www.filerush.com).
